Sources: Orlando's hiring Denver executive Pete D'Alessandro as an assistant GM. Moves D'Alessandro back to basketball side from business.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojVerticalNBA) June 10, 2017
As Woj’s tweet indicates, this move brings D’Alessandro back to the basketball side of operations. From 2010-2012 D’Alessandro served as the Advisor to the Executive VP of Basketball Operations and from 2012-2013 as the VP of Basketball Operations for the Nuggets under Masai Ujiri. In 2013, he was then hired as General Manager for the Sacramento Kings before returning to Denver as a senior vice president of business and team operations in 2015. Though his time in Sacramento was ultimately marred by questionable decision making and dysfunctional teams, D’Alessandro is well known around the league for his strong analytical skills and his expertise of the NBA salary cap. D’Alessandro was an integral part of the Nuggets front office during both of his tenures in Denver.
Pete will be joining a Magic organization in the middle of a front office rebuild, which started with the recent hiring of former Buck’s general manager John Hammond a few weeks ago.
D’Alessandro is now the second Nuggets executive to be targeted this offseason, as Arturas Karnisovas is currently a candidate to take the recently vacated general manager position for the Milwaukee Bucks. As D’Alessandro wasn’t involved in basketball operations for Denver this time around, his absence doesn’t necessarily leave a void in Tim Connelly’s staff.
Best of luck to Pete in his future endeavors.
