Denver Nuggets 2010 training camp preview...
In addition to the never-ending questions surrounding the Carmelo Anthony saga, the Nuggets began training camp with a slew of non-Melo related questions that head coach George Karl will attempt to answer in the weeks ahead.
Regardless of what you may think of George Karl's coaching, you have to feel for the guy. Four seasons ago he had to coach a roster littered with bad apples, big egos and bad gamesmanship. Three seasons ago he had to endure an asshole blogger trying to get him fired. Last season he was beset by his second bout with cancer and had to watch a once-great team crumble in his absence. And, now that he has bravely fought back from a brutal radiation program to eradicate his throat and neck cancer, Karl has to run a training camp with a roster loaded with distractions, injuries and unanswerable questions...without his top assistant coach, to boot. Oh, and I did I mention his contract is up at year's end?
It shouldn't have to be this way for a 59 year old, future Hall of Fame coach. But such is life in the modern NBA. And Karl, like the other top-tier coaches in the game, is one of the masters at dealing with bizarre scenarios. After all, this guy has coached Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Vin Baker, Glenn Robinson, Anthony Mason, Tim Thomas, Allen Iverson and J.R. Smith, just to name a few of the sordid characters that have waltzed into a George Karl training camp at some point in his 22-year NBA coaching career.
But even Karl hasn't had to face anything like what's going on with his 2010-11 Denver Nuggets. Even Kemp's contract dispute with the Supersonics and Karl's public run-ins with Ray Allen in Milwaukee pale in comparison to what our head coach is dealing with right now.
Among the Nuggets 12 players sure to be on the opening night roster, just four - the newly acquired Al Harrington, the injured Chris Andersen, second year dynamo Ty Lawson and Karl's doghouse denizen Renaldo Balkman - are guaranteed to be in a Nuggets uniform next season (unless they get traded beforehand, of course). This leaves the team's top talent - Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Nene, Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith and Arron Afflalo - in some form of contract limbo all year long. Hence one of the reasons why Anthony claims to want out of Denver. But it's a little chicken-and-egg as had Anthony just signed his damn extension already, the Nuggets could take care of his teammates and head coach and start planning for the future.
As Nate aptly wrote the other night, it appears as though Anthony and the Nuggets have indeed broken up but just haven't told anyone yet. (I mean, did you see that press conference? What a joke.) And most unfortunately for Karl and his coaching staff, this distraction will color everything that happens in camp. I don't even know how Karl game-plans without knowing whether or not his best player will even be in a Nuggets uniform on opening night.
Putting the Melo-drama aside for now, here are some other key questions that Karl and his staff will have to address during training camp...
Who's starting at power forward?
We already knew K-Mart and Birdman would be out for some time (they've both had surgeries to recover from torn patella tendons...not good), and thus Harrington was brought in ostensibly as the team's K-Mart "insurance policy" at power forward. But Karl has gone on record several times saying he wants Harrington to come off the bench. This sounds nice in theory, but who starts at power forward in K-Mart's absence if Harrington is the team's sixth man? Should Anthony stay in Denver (get used to that lead-in for a sentence, by the way) and remain as the team's starting small forward, does this mean newly acquired Shelden Williams gets the starting nod? He's not even the best basketball player in his own marriage. Or Balkman perhaps? I have the feeling Karl would prefer to start me at power forward over Balkman.
Karl may ultimately have no choice but to start Harrington at power forward alongside Anthony and get all his offensive production off the bench from J.R. Smith and Ty Lawson. The bottom line is the Nuggets had no size to begin with before K-Mart and Birdman went down, and now they're a Nene or Harrington injury away from forming the smallest lineup in the NBA.
The Nuggets power forward curse continues and it's frightening.
How many minutes for Chauncey?
Starting point guard Chauncey Billups played 34 minutes per game last season and was visibly tired down the stretch. His shoddy shooting throughout the last two months of the 2009-10 regular season has been documented many times here. Now on the wrong side of 34 years old and having just logged heavier-than-expected minutes with Team USA at the FIBA World Championships, Karl must find a way to get Billups' minutes into the lower 30 range. Remarkably, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash (Billups' contemporaries age-wise at the point guard position) logged 36 and 33 minutes per game last season, respectively. But for whatever reason, Billups wore down while Nash remained sprightly and Kidd, well, was never that sprightly to begin with.
Enter Ty Lawson. Lawson is undersized, even for a point guard, but he proved throughout stretches of games last season that he can handle more minutes and hopefully has earned Karl's trust by this point. Still in the mix is Anthony Carter, a great guy who gives a great effort. But there's a big difference between playing hard and playing right, and "AC" seems to do more of the former than the latter. It's time for Lawson to get more minutes so Billups is fresher come the post-season.
Who will be the 13th Denver Nugget?
NBA teams are required to carry a 13-man roster and the Nuggets have only committed to 12 players thus far for opening day. This leaves a five-man competition for the 13th and final roster spot and the training camp invitees are NBA veteran Melvin Ely (who has shockingly made over $12 million in his NBA career...$12 million for Melvin Ely!!...and the players say the system ain't broken), Eric Boateng, Shane Edwards, Gary Forbes and Courtney Sims. Denver Stiffs reader "runningdonut" has done an excellent job breaking down all five of these players and believes one of them will crack the roster. Runningdonut's preference is Forbes, but given the circumstances at power forward and the Nuggets overall lack of size, I foresee them playing it safe with a known quantity like Ely. Ely is a Stiff and will contribute to the 2010-11 Nuggets about as much as Malik Allen contributed to the 2009-10 squad.
What to do about J.R.?
J.R. Smith completed his 2009-10 season by sulking on the bench during the fourth quarter of a crucial elimination playoff game and then pulled an Isiah Thomas (or shall we say pulled a LeBron James?) by walking off the court without congratulating the opposition on their series victory. Smith followed up that show of class by (allegedly) beating the crap out of a practice player during a Pepsi Center shootaround a month or so ago. Other than that, I've heard he's been shooting all summer long and is ready for action.
If Karl is insistent on Harrington coming off the bench he may want to consider starting Smith for two reasons. One, Harrington should provide ample offensive firepower as a reserve whereas Smith could jump-start the Nuggets offense early rather than having to save it. And two, by starting/showcasing Smith, Karl could increase J.R.'s trade value making a deal for the mercurial shooting guard more likely...and thus making Karl much happier. Smith is in the final year of his contract at $6 million, a number that makes him very trade-able if he could just comport himself as a professional. A tall order.
Will Karl's coaching hierarchy change?
After seeing lead assistant coach Adrian Dantley's inability to get the Nuggets out of the playoffs first round last season, despite having home court advantage and playing a severely undermanned Jazz team, many Nuggets fans have been advocating for Denver to bring in a former head coach as the team's lead assistant should Karl miss any time for health reasons again. The matter is even more alarming with Karl's top assistant, Tim Grgurich, not coming back for reasons unknown to the media. The Nuggets smartly tried to bring former Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown on board, but Brown is taking a much-deserved year off from coaching. And no, the recently hired Melvin Hunt doesn't cut it as head coaching material for this Nuggets squad.
Whether we as fans like it or not, this is probably a "the devil you know vs. the devil you don't know" scenario and AD will be back in place as the team's lead assistant. Should Dantley be thrust into the head coaching seat again this season, let's hope the experience he gained last season carries over...and the players don't quit on him and behave insubordinantly this time.
How to cut down on the whining?
When I asked Karl about this a year ago he got pretty defensive, but I believe the Nuggets - notably Anthony, Billups, Nene, Martin and Smith - are the biggest collection of whiners in the NBA when it comes to officiating. Maybe I'm biased the wrong way because I watch them more than any other team, but there's a reason why NBA officials routinely do the Nuggets no favors: it's because they're a bunch of cry babies.
Not lost on the great readers of this site was the NBA's recent announcement that the referees will get much more latitude with issuing technical fouls. It's as if the new rules were written specifically for our Nuggets because the actions now deemed technical-worthy include:
• Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court.
• Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled.
• Running directly at an official to complain about a call.
• Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone.
In other words, we're totally screwed with the officials this season. I don't think Anthony, Billups, Nene, Martin or Smith will make it out of the first quarter if these rules are enforced. In fact, the only thing that will keep Martin out of technical foul trouble will be his rehabbed patella tendon.
If they accomplish nothing else in training camp this year, Karl and his staff must emphasize these new technical foul rules or they'll be playing four-on-five Hickory High Huskers-style during the second half on opening night.
I'm sure I missed some other questions that Denver Stiffs readers would like to see addressed, so please include them in your comments. And be sure to thank Carmelo Anthony for ruining what would otherwise be a semi-productive training camp.

I would still like to see Melo play a few minutes here or there at PF...
A Ty/Chauncey/J.R/Melo/Nene lineup would possibly be the most amazing Pick and Roll line-up in the league with Melo setting the screens.
Just my two cents though.
Great article, once again, Andrew!

1000 nba career victories for karl
that is how he will approch this season. my belief in why rex and wark were let go was because they did not back up the coaching staff. the best example was when smith walked off the court during a game. when larry brown coached the knicks to 59 losses it proves my point. a hall of fame coach that went twice in a row to the nba finals and winning it once. when the players will not listen and the front office does not back up the coach bad things will happen. george karl has beaten cancer twice. he is alive and a head coach in the nba. he will take it one practice and one game at a time. if the organization and players will not rally around coach karl that is as piss poor as it gets.

Great article Andrew... I'm going to take a stab at answering
Starting Power Forward
Melo. Why not? This isn’t about making him happy anymore. Every day that goes by the Nuggets leverage decreases. There is literally nothing to lose and he’s Denvers best option right now. We really can’t start Balkman and Shelden is the only other possibility.
How many minutes for Chauncey?
I don’t know. Ty should be getting 30 minutes a night. Just figure out how to make that happen and give Chauncey whatever he gets under that scenario
13th Nugget
Andrew already pointed it out, I’m partial to Forbes or Shane Edwards, both truly hungry young players with serious upside and potential NBA futures. I won’t hold it against Karl for picking Ely or anyone else. Like Andrew said Karl is going to need humble, hard working attitudes in the locker room and Andrew’s prediction Ely becoming the next Tacos is actually very likely. Not a bad choice, whoever this guy is likely won’t play or have a future with the Nuggets beyond a year
What to do with JR?
Right now, keep. Melo is almost sure to go and all attempts to trade JR for good value have failed. Denver’s tried so many times I think they’ve given up. If he ends up signing with another team in free agency, whatever. I don’t really care at this point

Change in coaching heirarchy?
None. Karl is too loyal to his guys and he won’t throw any of them under the bus no matter how bad they do. Jamahl Mosley probably left because he knew he wasn’t jumping above Dantley or Welch under George Karl. AD remians the number 2 guy, Welch number 3. AD will be better for his experience last year.

I got the impression that the split with Mosely was very amicable, that Karl was happy for him and that was what he was grooming Mosely for.

coach karl paid jamahl mosley out of his own pocket to coach his 1st year in the nba
george karl is committed to seeing young talented BLACK coaches get their rightful opportunity to becoming part of the nba. there is a huge gap between the number of black players and black coaches in the league. karl has put his own money where his mouth is on this subject. i compare AD with alvin gentry’s interim stint as the suns coach. he was d’antoni’s assistant. he was retained when the new coach was brought in. (pisses me off i cannot remember his name but he went to wisconsin white water university and played along side of clyde drexler in portland). he was fired after the allstar game. gentry was given the job when TERRY PORTER was dismissed. suns missed the playoffs when they had shaq on the team. the next season gentry had a full training camp AND THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE FRONT OFFICE. i cannot blame coach dantley for the situation he was put in. no way he could discipline the players and they knew it.

Good writeup Andrew
I think Karl would start one of the “invites” over Melo at PF or just move Nene back to Power Forward and keep Balkman as Melo’s backup (if Balkman has improved his practice skills)
The coaching thing needs to be figured out first though.

I think with the current roster
this is what they would do (a la Petro last year). The beefier Williams might be an upgrade defensively.
You might say “The Landlord” will be subletting the starting center position. heh, heh, groan…

That’s got to be grounds for a technical foul!
Did you start your original blog because you actually have a thing for George Karl?
Sure the question rings of immaturity, but this is ridiculous. “You have to feel for the guy?” Why? The guy didn’t even really start trying to coach until you put a fire under his ass.
It took a while for me to see it, but I will agree that you are an asshole blogger. Not because of anything personal ( I don’t know you personally) but because you have said plenty of times that Karl isn’t vocal enough to the officials, but now the team is “whiny” (as if you’ve forgotten that you’ve explained why they have to be). You’ve also said other ridiculous things, like Kanye West could actually sing, but let’s stay focused on the Nuggets.
Does this sound like a guy committed to the Nuggets organization:
“It doesn’t bother me. If I was coaching a bad team, I’d be a little more nervous,” Karl said. “I think I’m coaching a good team that’s going to win 45 to 55 games. That will probably get me another job if I don’t have one here.” (31 August 2010)
Don’t get dizzy spinning that one. Just don’t say it was the chemo/cancer talking, even though I’m sure you find a way to squeeze something about his battle in there. In all fairness, you’re not the only one who can’t metion GK without metioning his unfortunate situation. But it’s getting old. VERY OLD. VERY VERY OLD and it does nothing to help this team’s basketball situation. Be rational here instead of emotional. Karl has made millions. He’ll be fine. From a basketball standpoint his health is a legit reason to let go of him instead of hold him tighter. I’m not saying hold a press conference, hit him in the face with a pie and play “Hit the road, Jack”. He could hold a paid position in Denver, out of the limelight, while the players can trust that their coach will more than likely be with them, in full health, at the end of the season and through the playoffs.
NOW….
Can we just kill this enitre anit-Melo facade and get to the root of the issue? THE NUGGETS ARE A CRAPPY ORGANIZATION AS FAR AS THE FRONT OFFICE GOES. They were crappy, pre-Melo, they were crappy co-Melo (even w/ playoff appearances), and they’ll be crappy post-Melo. Historically crappy ownership leads to historcally crappy teams (think: Timberwolves and KG). They’ve put Melo on the trading-block no less than 3 times during his time in Denver and now he’s the villain because he won’t sign the “damn extension”? Really?
On one side you want a player dedicated to winning, but you fully back an organization that’s not…. HISTORICALLY. A billionaire owner who is married to a woman who is probably richer than him, is deftly afraid of luxury tax. Not to say that many owners are willing to do it, but many owners don’t pick up random sports franchises like Kroenke. The guy is about his financial bottom line at the end of the day and that’s how it’s always been with him. I have to respect this as a layman because I understand that there has to be a certain mentality to acheive the financial status the Kroenke has. But as a fan, I can’t justify it. He wants money, not championships. I’m not trying to bash the guy, just call it as I see it. Go ask Camby for his take.
Melo is doing the same as a lot of stars have done; waiting to see if the organization will make a significant move in the right direction before signing a extension. He also has a players option to stick around another year this season. But does anyone talk about that? Nope. Striaght trade-talk. And historically, who has brought up trades more? Carmelo or the Nuggets front office? Even you said you would like to trade Melo while putting the future on the shoulders of… Allen Iverson. Add that to you “asshole blogger tally” and have a great day.

Asshole blogger (twice)
Stop the GK-Cancer mambo
Called him out for wanting AI over Melo (actually a legit issue)
BUT, I actually did make some valid points in there. Why isn’t anyone discussing the fact the Melo has a player option and could potentiallyplay through 2011-12?
I’m not going to repeat my post, just look past the jokes look at the real content.
Hello
I’ll try to answer some of your question. I didn’t respond to your posts because of your personal attacks. Making a joke is one thing, but calling him an asshole, twice, isn’t generally well received around here. Especially from someone with no track record on this site. The no track record means perhaps you are merely trying to stir up trouble, or, since you seem to have read the site for a while, you are someone who got banned and is back under a new name.
Want to make valid points, the people on here will respond. Want to call people assholes, perhaps we’ll be less interested.

Maybe you should re-read Andrew's post: He called himself an "asshole blogger" first
And I was one of the more active members of firegeorgekarl.com, never got banned, and I read on here from time to time without posting. So really, I don’t need the lecture. I would have NEVER just come out and call him an asshole out of nowhere.
Not trying to stir up trouble either, just crack jokes.
I’ll even RETRACT THE “ASSHOLE BLOGGER” COMMENTS (even though Andrew said it about himself first)
In a way I’m proud of the way Andrew has developed a little following. But I really don’t like the way he’s throwing Melo under the bus (when Melo gave him reason to want to start “firegeorgekarl” in the first place) now that he seems to be on his way out of Denver.
I’m a rational guy with a harsh sense of humor… that’s all.
Ok?
Sorry fella - only room for one man-crush in my life
And that spot belongs to Noel Gallagher (know I’ll catch some shit for that, but there it is). But I’ll let you know if anything opens up.
You’re right that the Nuggets front office situation has been less than ideal for quite some time, but tell me – if Melo’s so concerned about being with a dysfunctional organization, why on god’s green earth would he want to go to the Knicks? That’s like moving from Colorado to Antarctica because you hate the cold winters.
As for Melo’s player option, no one’s talking about it because there’s zero indication he wants to be here right now, much less for another 2 years. And the reason the Nuggets have talked trading Melo more than vice versa is because league rules prohibit Melo from doing so while under contract. Even now, much as he wants out, he’s not allowed to come right out & say it without incurring serious financial penalties.
Don't look back in anger, CraftyB

Best. Song. Ever.
No one will ever convince me otherwise, even if it does rip the piano straight from “Imagine.”
Don't feel bad... mine is Prince. *shrugs*
Well here’s the thing about NY: I’ve never personally heard Melo say a thing about NY. BUT… It could be the potential financial aspect of it all. I mean if there is any place with a more of a “jump on the bandwagon first, ask questions last” it’s NY. Melo would make a killing in endorsements seeing that he was born in NY and gave Syracuse their only title.
Another thing I’ll add is that, even though I haven’t heard anything from Melo on NY, I HAVE heard from Chris Paul. Chris Paul and Amar’e would give anyone reason to at least give NY a look.
True, Melo has never indicated that he wants to stay, but look at the big-man situation over the past 7 years: K-Mart (injury-prone), Nene (injury-prone), Camby (injury-prone), Anderson (injury prone, though he had a hell of a comeback season), Petro (show heart, but is apparently garbage. neve saw him play long enough to tell), Balkman (supposedly a hustle guy with a nose for the ball, but can’t get PT). Then look at the shooters: JR Smith (Nuff said), Chauncey Billups (solid, but showing age), and…. Ok moving along. Basically, this organization has had plenty of time to make solid changes and put together a solid squad, and they didn’t. Just like Minnesota and Garnett. They lost in the first round for years and made it to one Conference Finals, just like Minn and Garnett. And now their star is about to walk, just like…
So why would Melo want to stay when the attitude is “sign this extension or we’ll trade you” after they’ve “coincidentally” become a guranteed playoff team since he’s arrived? I’m not going to pretend as if Melo has been an angel throughout his career, but he has grown a lot in my eyes. But remember when the Nuggets said something to the effect of “no one is untradable”? Well now Melo is calling their bluff.
And for good reason. Melo gets suspended for an admittedly idiotic punch, and do they remain patient for their star to return and let the remaining players gel and get more PT and experience for Melo to return to a gelled unit? Nope. They bring in the CAnswer. All for the gimmick. All for the ticket sales. All for the money. All for Kroenke. All for another first-round exit. But hey, at least someone drank the Kool-Aid.
They also passed up on Ron Artest knowing that the team lacked a collective defensive mindset. Excuse me, NBA Champ, Ron Artest.
Good post
On A.I, it didn’t work, but he was the trade piece to get Billups, so I’m okay with that deal.
The other problems you bring up, I think, go back to the KMart trade. In addtion to locking up a ton of salary cap space, they lost three first round picks. It also forced the team to give away Camby for nothing. I was not opposed to trading Camby, just wish they could have gotten an asset in return. The Kmart trade has hamstrung the team since the day it was made (full disclosure: I was very excited when the trade was made) and caused the other issues you bring up. If this one transaction never occurs, this team could very well have a title by now.

Melo
has to take some responsiblity for all the 1st round exits. I’m sorry, but this notion that he doesn’t have a team around him is BS. Billups, JR, AI, Nene, Andre Miller, Kmart, Camby…not like he’s played w/ all stiffs
Then there is Melo who gets DUI right before series, lets guys like trenton hassel completely handcuff him (can’t remember the clipper guy who did the same) and then proceeds to allow Mattews from utah score 25ppg when his season avg is around 10. You can just see it in the eyes of the guy he covers in the playoffs, they’re like ahh yeah no D melo is guarding me, time to make myself rich! We might not have even won the series we did if not for CB
Maybe he needs to be a 2nd option and not a 1st
Yeah
I bet Matthews doesn’t get the same kind of contract without Melo’s help. Matthews was allowed to push the momentum at crucial times in that series. Not the only thing that went wrong, but definitely a factor.
No shit
I couldn’t believe all the readers on this blog just took that shit. Melo’s selfish ass actually went to the media and said he needed help when it was him that was Junior High School basketball style hogging the ball. The more I think about Melo the more I really want a trade to happen.
+100000
Nugs have a very good team around Melo. One of the best supporting casts in the league in fact. Also, the Nugs pay deep into the luxury tax every year just about so people can forget calling the organization cheap. Ask Billups, he’ll tell you that the Nugs organization is one of the best in the league and that the team will be very competitive for the two seed with or without Meelo.
Easy to say we should have gotten Artest
But just because it worked for the Lakers (and really, he was MIA for most of the season until his astonishing Finals performance) doesn’t mean he would’ve worked here. Sure, it looks like a no-brainer now, but back then nobody knew what to expect from him. It would have been a serious roll of the dice to sign him, particularly in light of all the combustible personalities we already had.
Similarly, just because AI didn’t work out doesn’t mean it was a bad move. It was worth a shot, I was all for it at the time, and as ThrowItDown points out, it ultimately got us Chauncey, so even now I’m not sure you can say it was a mistake.
Bottom line is it was Artest for Kleiza.

But keep in mind that with the Lakers, Artest was pretty much the lone headcase – they had Kobe, Fisher & PJ to keep him in line I honestly don’t think our team, as it was then constructed, could have handled him.

not to mention that Carmelo wanted to sign an extension in the summer of 2009
and the FO balked. It’s their fault, not Melo’s
I meant to say
Melo has a player option to stick around another year AFTER this season
Let us Answer!
1. Who starts at PF?
This question obviously has major ties to whether or not Melo gets traded. Should Anthony stay in Denver, then Karl has to start Harrington at the pf. If however he insists on Harrington off the bench then I believe he will go with Balkman, mainly because he doesn’t have much else of a choice.
2. How many minutes for Chauncey?
The answer to this one is simple. 28. 28 for Chauncey and 20 for Lawson. As scary as it is, Lawson may well be the future of this team, and he needs to get major minutes.
3.Who Will be the 13th Nugget?
Totally agree, Nuggets will bring in Ely to serve the same role Malik Allen played.
4. What to do about JR Smith?
Went to the Avs preseason game on Sunday and if the decor was any indication, the Nuggets have every intention of trading JR. Not a single piece of JR merchandise was in the store, not a single decal of him is anywhere in the stadium and there is no mention of him what so ever. I thought that was pretty telling of Denver’s plans for our troubled 2 guard, too bad they are about 2 years too late. On a bright note the stadium and altitude authentics are still ripe with Melo gear.
5. Will Karl’s coaching hiearchy change?
Because of the loss of Grguric (It was because he didn’t agree with letting Warkentein go by the by) Dantley really is the only choice for lead assistant. We can only hope last season was a learning experience and he’s grown because of it.
6. How do we cut down on the whining?
Well we are either going to do something or we are going to have 5 players suspended by December. The problem is guys like K-mart, Melo and JR can’t be reached, this is how they have learned to play the NBA game and they are all veterans of at least 5 years, they aren’t going to stop bitching now, fortunately most of the whiners are not likely to be Nuggets past 2011-2012

no! trade him!
Who wants to cheer for him now!?….he doesn’t want to be here and if anything he will just make a bigger point of ball hogging the ball now to increase his own value. NOt to win, he doesn’t care about winning he cares about moving to the bigger market. The Melo Isolation offense ENDS NOW!!!! Trade him to NY and watch as Amare blows his knees out and Melo is stuck on his own with an absolute MISERABLE team. That’s a Knicks game that I’ll watch!
I think you're talking about Melo
I’m talking about JR. As far as Melo goes, you and I are in total agreement.
this whole situation angers me just about as much as Vick being allowed to play in the NFL again
Disgusts me
I'm no fan of Vick's, but he did his time
Hell, there are players in the league who’ve killed people that got off easier than he did. If you’re gonna ban Vick, there’s a long list of other guys you better go after.
what
barely did any time at all! Why are these types of players allowed back into professional sports?
19 months in Leavenworth is no joke
Donte Stallworth got 30 days in county lockup and 2 years probation for killing a human being. No one batted an eye when the league let him back in.
Not defending what Vick did, but he’s far from the worst offender & he paid for it more than most.
The points is
Why are these players allowed back in professional sports? These are Rolemodels haha….total joke
I agree, but it's gotta be consistent across the board
And let’s face it – a lot of fans could care less what players do off the field so long as they’re producing on it, and as long as that’s the case, you’ll never see a change. Not saying it’s right, but that’s the reality.
Have to admit though
None of that stopped me from going apeshit when he threw down that 360 alley-oop last year. We’re all complicit to one degree or another.

Agreed
That dunk had me going apeshit too. And the games his head is not up his ass, what does he do for us, He makes about 8 or 9 3pt shots. Problems off the court, of course, ability to change a game, yes. I say keep him and let him walk at the end of the year

He served his time.
I think it was disgusting and wrong what he did but he paid his debt to society

Good post, Andrew
I think the rule changes regarding technicals are going to be met with much whining. Who knows. RE: PF, the Nuggets are going to be stuck unless a training camp PF/C really stands out. I see a lot of Shelden Williams rotation alongside Nene in the future.
Everything else….who knows. I just want to watch my Nuggets again already.

technicals
I think you are right, the players are going to whine a lot about the technicals. It will be the whole new ball issue all over again. You might even see some big name players intentionally daring the officials to eject them early in games.
I like the idea of the rule, but in the end, my guess is the NBA will cave to the players like it did with the new ball.

I hate this rule change
It may be well-intentioned, but all it really means is greater influence on the outcomes of games by an officiating corps that’s already drunk on its own power & vanity.
Similar to what I posted on another page
I could easily see the Nuggets doing the same thing…sit back, “rent” melo for a year, try to sell him on his own city…if it doesn’t work, you have a ton of cap space to flood the market with bad Joe Johnsonesque offers….well, hopefully not the last part.
If you go get Iggy without much else, you better hope he is as good as his contract.
Interesting tweets from Chris Tomasson regarding Melo today

I guess
But he’s not exactly answering anything either. I get that he’s limited in terms of what he’s allowed to say, but everything here strikes me as pretty canned…
Maybe he is confused as well

Good interview by Hotch, thanks
I love how direct he is with Melo. It’s funny how Melo claims to be honest, yet skated around prety much every up-front question asked.

he seems honest when he says he really just wants to keep his options open
i can certainly understand that given the uncertainties with the nuggets. he wants to be a FA so he can make the final decision on where to go (which is likely NY). The new CBA is what is throwing a wrench into his plans and may force him to accept a trade prior to becoming a FA.
He seems content to give it one more year with the Nuggets and unless we get a good trade offer from the Knicks prior to the deadline, we might as keep him. It’ll free up a lot of cap space at the very least. He sounds like he won’t half-ass it this year, we’ll see.
exactly
it’s not like there won’t be chance for Denver to sign him in the off-season too… if Denver does good in the playoffs he might just take a pay cut so the team can improve
How have we gone from getting the most we can out of Melo, to this?
Within two days for that matter. If Melo hasn’t signed the extension by Feb. you trade him no matter what. If he truly does want to be a Nugget the signature will speak for him.

He would be in violation if he talked with Nets. Apparently Denver never gave permission. Story doesn't mean anything.
Melo is saying the right things, but he also said “I’m not a FA YET”. That doesn’t sound promising.
Nets are staying clear of the situation until after Melo rejects Coach Karl’s attempts to sign an extension.
Meanwhile the value of Nets players will be on the rise. The may even decide to take Favors out of the equation.
Harris is psyched to prove to everyone how good he is. He took last year off, in part due to injuries, in part due to not having a coach or decent teammates, and in part because he knew that the FO wanted to get the #1 pick – he complied.
If Nuggets are successful in dragging this on, we could be in December when a trade gets done, at a lower price.
Nets fans let it be known that we aren’t going to agree with trading Favors+Harris and instead of getting back a decent PG, having to accept Luxury tax garbage – we aren’t interested.
Personal opinion
Nuggets aren’t going to trade Melo this year….particularly if they start the season well. It’s getting too late to trade and many teams are annoyed with the Nuggets right now.

I think a lot depends on what kind of start various teams get off to
Particularly Chicago. If they start slow, I would not be at all surprised to see their unwillingness to include Noah in a trade melt quickly away.
Noah can't be traded by Chicago and Denver wouldn't accept him, if he continues to refuse to sign an extension.
Noah wants to remain in Chicago. He controls the situation. Perhaps he will get a “no trade clause” in his contract?
Therefore, Chicago is eliminated.
And don't underestimate the annual feeding frenzy that is the Feb trade deadline
Every team wants to believe they have the pieces at the beginning of the season and is reluctant to mortgage the future, but in Jan/Feb, there’ll be a half-dozen teams convinced they’re just a player away, and those teams will be tempted to make a play for Melo – even as a rental. Chance to win a title is worth the risk, they’ll tell themselves, and if we win it all, we can convince him to stay.
Three seasons ago he had to endure an asshole blogger trying to get him fired
I admit, I lol’d.
Did I here two Melvins in one post? Melvin just sounds like a Stiff name.
Anyways…
Great post as usual Feinstein. I couldn’t agree more about starting JR and emphasizing the new privlages the refs get with technicals this season. When I read “Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone,” I knew we were screwed.
I think by far the biggest, of the concerns you mentioned, has to be who’s starting at PF. Are we really going to consider starting Candace Parkers husband (honestly I can’t even remember his name off the top of my head)? This is where I am crucial of Karl. He needs to get over his stubbornness for the benifit of the team. He may not like Balkman, or the fact that he doesn’t practice hard (who does in the NBA?), but his production on the defensive end of the court is undenyable. Start Balkman at PF and JR at the two, to replace his lack of offense, and bring Harrington of the bench. It’s our best bet til K-Mart gets back.
One more thing. I think the new rules are going to be a good thing for the Nuggets because they’ll be forced to stop bitching and that means no more 4 on 5 in fastbreaks in favor of the other team.
