Nate's 2010-11 Denver Nuggets Preview: Under Construction

Taking part in Jeff Clark's season previews for CelticsBlog seemed like a wonderful idea at the time, but with the Carmelo Anthony situation still unresolved ... the Nuggets remain under construction. Let's take a weird look at where things are as training camp is underway.

Star-divide

Note: We will have plenty of more coverage on the Nuggets upcoming season as things shake out over the next several weeks, so stay in touch with Denver Stiffs as Andrew Feinstein, Jeff Morton, and I still have to debate among ourselves about how this season will look.

Team Name: Denver Nuggets
Last Year’s Record: 53-29, lost in first round of the playoffs to the Utah Jazz (4-2)
Key Losses: Linas Kleiza or L.K.'s NBA rights (Raptors), Joey Graham (Cavaliers), Johan Petro (Nets), Malik "Tacos" Allen (Magic).
Key Additions: Al Harrington (Knicks), Shelden Williams (Celtics)

1. What Significant Moves were made during the off-season?

On paper, Nuggets ownership transferred from Stan Kroenke, who purchased the St. Louis Rams of the NFL, to his son Josh Kroenke. In accordance with NFL policy, Stan had to relinquish ownership of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche in order to take over a now somewhat promising, thanks to Sam Bradford, NFL team.

The 30 year-old Josh Kroenke now finds himself in a much larger and more public role with the Nuggets and Avalanche. So, while my 28 year-old self is trying to figure out if I should have Special K or eggs for breakfast, Josh is trying to decide if trading his franchise player is the Nuggets' best decision.

Along with "new" ownership, the Nuggets cleaned house in the front office by not re-signing well-respected basketball minds Mark Warkentien (vice president of basketball operations) and Rex Chapman (vice president of player personnel). In their place is 39 year-old Masai Ujiri, who is the new vice president of basketball operations, leaving his role as Bryan Colangelo's assistant general manager with the Toronto Raptors after three years.

Closer to the court, assistant coach Jamahl Mosley joined the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching staff and coaching legend, and buffer between George Karl and J.R. Smith, Tim Grgurich also wont be back on the Nuggets bench. Karl has always bragged and cared for his assistants, so it'll be interesting to see who he picks to join him on the bench this season.

All the above people mentioned that wont be back with the team have all played major roles in the Nuggets success in the Melo Era. The younger approach in the front office intrigues me, but also with a lot of shake ups comes players wondering what direction the team is headed in.

The Nuggets surprised their fanbase when they used their mid-level exception. Yes, we were also very surprised that we used the MLE to sign Al Harrington, but the fact that Denver used the MLE at all was a pretty big shock for a fanbase that was beginning to think that cost-cutting moves were here to stay. The move was a curious one as Harrington can play small forward and power forward, while the team was still without a true center.

Currently, George Karl and Chauncey Billups have been speaking positively of Shelden Williams and the big man should have plenty of opportunities to play early as both Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen will start the season in street clothes thanks to some off season surgery. Is it a good thing that I'm talking myself into Williams magically transforming himself from bust-to-boom?

Oh and did I mention that there was a blockbuster trade discussed between the Nuggets, Jazz, Charlotte Bobcats, and New Jersey Nets the weekend before training camp started? Has anyone even heard of the rumored deal? I don't think it got a lot of coverage by any kind of medium. Well, the deal apparently involved Carmelo Anthony, Andrei Kirilenko, Derrick Favors, Boris Diaw, and some other moving parts. It hasn't been a distraction at all in Nuggets camp and I don't think anyone even brought it up to Melo at his first press conference, but I could be wrong.

2. What are the team’s biggest strengths?

As funny as it sounds, the Nuggets biggest strength has always been defense. When the Nuggets are flying around defensively and creating turnovers, clogging the lane and getting blocks, and rotating properly they become the most explosive team in the NBA and one that will run teams right out of the thin air at the Pepsi Center.

This season with K-Mart in no hurry to return to the lineup (he actually said this, check it out) and Birdman Andersen also on the shelf the Nuggets defense will be very shorthanded. Al Harrington maintains that he's going to be defensive minded, like he was with the Indiana Pacers back in the day, and Williams should help defensively, but they are both new and need to gel in a hurry.

With Melo on the team, the Nuggets have never had to worry too much about scoring points. But they do get into lulls where the team stands around too much instead of working the ball to the open man and that's when they get into trouble. With the addition of Harrington, I'd love to see what the team is capable of when healthy ... but I don't know if Denver fans will get that chance as the Melo trade hangs over the locker room.

3. What are the team’s biggest weaknesses?

Direction. What direction is this team heading in? The franchise player is in limbo along with a number of other players and even head coach George Karl who is in the last year of his deal. If things shook out just right for Denver after the season they could erase roughly $57.2 million from the roster by letting Melo walk, K-Mart walk, J.R. Smith walk, Arron Afflalo walk, tearing up Billups' team option season, and having Nene opt out of his player option season.

But the more likely scenario is probably tearing up Billups' contract and re-signing him, maybe re-signing K-Mart at a reduced price, having Nene take his player option season, trading J.R. Smith, re-signing Afflalo, and either re-signing Melo (not looking promising) or trading Melo for some type of package.

Oh ... on the court weaknesses! Sorry, when your team is facing so many questions it's hard to even think about what the mess could look like on the court.

The Nuggets have really struggled on defense over the years with player rotations. For some reason the team falls in love with double teaming, switching every screen in sight, and rotating about as well as your grandma with a hoola-hoop.

4. What are the goals for this team?

George Karl has talked in the past about some of his most difficult coaching challenges. Well, if Denver decides to hang onto Melo for a good portion of the season, which it's looking like they will, then Karl is going to have one heck of a time trying to keep this team together.

Who knows how happy Karl is working on a one-year deal ... he also has to worry about keeping K-Mart focused, keeping Melo focused, and somehow keeping J.R. Smith focused as all three-guys are in contract seasons. They say that winning cures everything, so if Denver is winning I could see the team maybe coming together and making things work. But if things start to fall apart because the team is losing ... we could see some disasters in planning the likes of which only Wile E. Coyote could sympathise with.

So, the goal ... KEEP IT TOGETHER! That's a weird thing to say for a team with a pretty stable nucleus that's coming off back-to-back-to-back 50+ win seasons.

5. Do I want to see Melo stay or Melo go?

An easy one to answer ... of course I want to see Melo stay in Denver. There has been some talk about Melo becoming the next John Elway in Colorado. The only difference ... Melo was drafted by his team here and Elway demanded a trade from the Baltimore Colts before ever suiting up for them. So, Melo could do something even more special.

The biggest concerns remain:

A.) Does Melo want to be a Nugget?
B.) Are the Nuggets going to show Melo the blueprint they will maintain for success?

The Nuggets still have a great nucleus around Melo with a nice mix of veterans and up-and-coming guys, but Melo needs a little more help and I'm not sure if Al Harrington is the guy the team was looking for ... but it is a nice start. Playing alongside Ty Lawson, Afflalo, and Nene gives Melo some great promising guys, but the Nuggets could use a dominating center/power forward in the Pau Gasol or cheaper Marc Gasol mold. Melo seems to be wanting to play either in a bigger market or with more impact players and the Nuggets need to make some moves to either accommodate his desire to leave or bowl him over with an opportunity he can't pass up.

It's going to be a long season for Nuggets fans.

Predicted 2010-11 Record:

With the injuries to start the season the banking on Melo staying in Denver all season I'm going to say the Nuggets go: 47-35 next season.

If Melo leaves ... 47 wins will be a tall order.

Good predictions...

… but I think if Melo stays the whole season 55 wins is realistic. I think the team will come together because of all the drama going on, not fall apart. Coach Karl is coaching for a contract, several players playing for contract. The fact that the players playing for contract will help us is because people aren’t worried about J.R putting up numbers, they want to see if he can get his act together plus play D. They want to see Melo be proffesional and lead his team. They want to see K-Mart play his usual game at a high level. This will make us play better ball!

The team is as deep as any team (unless we get too many more injuries) and this will be as good a team the Nuggets have had for a while. Maybe I’m biased but I would love to see what this team can do with one more run, worst come to worst get to WCF and if Melo still want to leave, sign and trade for draftpicks hopefully and rebuild next year when all the contract are gone. I love D. Favors potential but there’ll be plenty more of him in future drafts as well. We might as well enjoy one more winning season before we fall into a 5 yr rebuild!

One big reason why I’m concerned about the win total is because overcoming the losses to K-Mart and Bird could be tricky at the beginning of the season. But if Denver starts hot then I think they go break 50 again …

Good call

I didn’t even consider the injuries at the beginning, guess I’m overly optimistic. I do however think that it would be worth giving this team one last go!

I'm sure we'll be fine without Birdman

All he does it block shots and rebound. He usually passes up his shots, which can explain why he’s not “offensive minded” and he’s not a terrific defender. In fact, he kinda sucks.
Not having Martin out there will be the main challenge. The anchor man of the Defense. We struggled badly without him, and I mean BADLY! The guy does everything for us. Can we really trust Nene do be Kenyon Martin?

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

We need the intimidation factor. Unless we start playing no contact floppetball Euro style.

Not so sure . . .

I’m concerned about K-mart and Birdman being injured. Given the recent history of these two guys, you pretty much have to expect at a minimum a month of down time for each of them anyway. We are probably looking at a little more than a month, but it’s better to get it out of the way at the beginning of the season when the coaching staff can plan for it . . .

unfortunately with the uncertainty surrounding Melo, planning is going to be tough.

You'll be kicking yourself in the face for saying that

Five years down the road when we’re consistantly winning 22 games each season. If Melo doesn’t sign by Feb. I don’t care how good we’re playing, we trade his ass for Favors and picks striaght up. Insert Al into the SF spot, move Nene to C and Favors to PF and you still got a playoff team so all you near-sighted guys can party on.

nuggstradamus is callin for 47 wins?

thats sounds about right to me. I doubt we crack 50, but we should be able to stay in the upper 40’s. im going to pull a price-is-right on nate and put my prediction at 48.

On the edge...

Can’t fault the Nuggets for drama this year. It is going to be BOOM or bust. Either the guys are going to have an us against the world mentality (i.e. actually play hard every night) or implode (i.e the ghost of AD coaching).

Figure the nationwide media on the implosion angle. I think it will apparent early on what Nuggets team is going to show up. A play hard team + Melo should win 50+ easy. A play hard team, no Melo might scratch the playoffs.

An imploding team…….. well the Nuggets will be in the news with a lot of trades. That is for sure.

Right on

Couldnt agree more. I hope and think the first will happen, a lot of it is on Melo though. If he plays hard, to win or if he wants to lose so he can force trade

Good post though overall. I actually think 47 wins is being pessimistic and I’m usually the pessimistic one around here. I think even if Melo gets traded in Feb. you’re still looking at a 50 win season minimum. I’d say 52 wins is my prediction.

I’ve never really been as concerned about finding a center as some. I think Nene does work at the 5-spot and gives the Nuggets a nice change of pace type of team versus having some lumbering Stiff at the 5 spot. But would I take Marc Gasol and slide Nene to power forward … yep.

I think your prediction is about spot on Nate

47-35 sounds about right for this team. We may sneak in as a 7 or 8 seed but with our starting frontcourt as injured as it is, if ANY injury happens to Nene or Shelden we’re definitely not going to make the playoffs.

The Melo question will be resolved by the trade deadline and he will be playing his ass off.

I’d really like to see some sort of movement towards picking up another backup big but I don’t see who the Nuggets target at this point. I like that Gary Forbes is playing so well in camp, but the Nuggets need another C as they have for the past X years and are going to continue to struggle without one.

While I wouldn't EXACTLY say that our biggest strength is our defense,

I would agree that the team is at its best when they’re playing their best defense. Honestly though, that concept probably applies to most teams. Unfortunately, although the Nugs have been able to regularly produce several big/exciting plays on the defensive end (huge blocks, steals that lead to wide open fastbreaks, etc.), we rarely can consistently play lock-down D.

So, in other words, our D can be our greatest strength, or our greatest weakness.

I'm saying Denver wins 51 games... that's if both Bird and Kenyon can comeback by the end of January...

I think with them, the team has A LOT of depth… pretty much last year and the year we went to the WCF but adding a player like Harrington, AAA and Ty’s development… this team is gonna surprise everyone

Well,

My guess is that Bird will be back by late December/early January. We have no idea when Martin will be back, Hell, we don’t even know if he’ll even be a Nugget by then.
Until they come back, we’re down to Nene, Harrington, and Williams. One guy who’s inconsistent, one guy who’s not known for defense, and another who never plays.

I want to say we’ll win 51 games this year, but I’m going to wait on judgment until I see the Nuggets play.

transition defense has become denver's biggest weakness

every team in the nba knows the nuggets lead the league in snitching to the referees. teams will look to run early and often. billups cannot keep up with any point guard now and will see more time at shooting guard. hope arron afflalo leaned a great deal in las vegas this summer at tim grgurich’s point guard camp. one player can make a huge difference as chauncey proved in the allen iverson trade. nuggets get off to a bad start look for them to clean house before the all star game.

If the Nugs decide to blow it up, and make the Melo trade

This is a trade idea for Kenyon. We sell Orlando on the idea that a healthy Kenyon is the best LeBron-stopper in the league (he is the best suited to guard him). Then offer the trade of Kenyon and one of the draft picks from NJ for Gortat and filler. I think ORL does that for a chance to frustrate/slow LeBron and Den ends up with a great big man core of Gortat, Nene and Favors.

NE Pats trade Moss

Not that this has anything to do with basketball, but it does show how a well run front office deals with controversy. NE is a team first outfit. You buy in or your gone (immediately). There is a reason that organization wins, year in year out. Of course, it also helps when you have one of the best QBs ever to play the game as your leader. If Melo were to take on that roll with the Nuggets, the sky is the limit for the Nuggets. Just sayin’.

I don't know where else to put this but

in an “article” in the DP about the Nuggets this morning, I noted this tidbit. I don’t recall seeing this discussed here and it came as a surprise. I don’t remember this happening. What do you all think?

And Anthony acknowledged last weekend that there is a possibility he could be traded before opening night.

But on this night, he was a Nuggets forward, and 2,904 fans caught a fleeting glimpse of the NBA all-star.

GM's Pick us 4th?

NBA.com survey says only 3.7% GM’s believe we can win the NW Division – maybe I didn’t read that right:

1 – Oklahoma City
2 – Portland
3 – Utah
4 – Denver

by jjbugs on Oct 7, 2010 2:11 PM MDT reply actions

I can understand why

OKC, Portland have young cores that keep improving. Utah beat us last year in the playoffs, despite whatever reasons we might throw out, they did beat us. We have the whole Melo “situation” and two of our three main big men from last year are out indefinitely. Of course the Nuggets have the upside to be #1 in the division, just like any team in the division. However, the other teams don’t have the injury issues Denver have at the moment and their superstars are all content.

Let’s not forget, the Nuggets didn’t have any of these issues going into last year and we won 53 games. Utah did as well, while Portland and OKC won 50. So it’s not like 3 cellar dwellers are being picked over us. All four teams in the division could be legitimate #2’s in the WC. I probably would have picked the standings the same way with possibly Utah jumping Portland. Coin flip tho.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/21 by Jeff Morton)

1. OFFICIALS AT THE NUGGETS VS T-WOLVES GAME
In a short time frame the Nuggets went from up 9 points, to trailing by 3 points largely due to strange and downright erroneous calls from officials. Included in their greatest hits? Corey Brewer getting blocked out into the first row and somehow getting a foul called on him. Andre Millerbeing ejected for arguing a call where he was pummeled by Martell Webster and drew an offensive foul. Also, Luke Ridnour falling on his face and somehow drawing a foul. Nice going refs.

2. GEORGE KARL'S END OF GAME COACHING
In a very winnable game against the Thunder, your coach of the Nuggets decided to burn his two oldest players (Al Harringtonand Andre Miller) from the 8 minute mark of the third quarter, through the end of the game. Leaving them dead legged for overtime. Also, not subbing in defensive rebounders for Durant's last couple shots of regulation was a bit of a blunder. Gotta get better coach!

3. ROYCE YOUNG
Reading this article on CBSSports.com makes me wonder if good old Royce is secretly a Thunder fan ... oh wait. He also writes for Daily Thunder, the Oklahoma City Thunder's biggest blog. Go figure!! Listen Royce, dismissing that the Nuggets were down their two best players, and then using this game to prove a point about the Nuggets is a bit ... I dunno ... "salty". Don't you agree?

4. THE "INJURED ANKLE LEPRECHAUN"
What is the appropriate sacrifice we need to beseech this malevolent leprechaun who has cursed the Nuggets. Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo both injured their ankles on Monday night. In addition to Danilo Gallinari being out with a severe ankle sprain and Timofey Mozgov just coming back from one himself. Listen, if you need me to get a goat I will.

5. FEBRUARY
Seriously? Can we be done with this month already? Time for March. Green beer and an incredibly easy Nuggets schedule. Can't get here soon enough.
