2009 Free Agent List
Free agency kicks off starting tonight at midnight! We've already seen a slew of activity around the league via trades and obviously with the draft last week (Ty Lawson! All right!!), but now we get into the real money being thrown around.
Some chips have already fallen as Carlos Boozer has opted to stay WITH the Jazz and Kobe Bryant also chose not to opt out of his contract prematurely.
So, the list of marquee free agents has dwindled just a bit - and the Jazz may now have a more difficult time re-signing young power forward and restricted free agent Paul Millsap (who is looking for a hefty raise) since Boozer and his $12 million deal are back on the Jazz's books.
Here is my short list of marquee unrestricted free agents heading into the free agency period: Hedo Turkoglu, Ben Gordan, Trevor Ariza, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, Shawn Marion, and Mike Bibby. Nothing terribly exciting there, but some pretty good role players will be searching for some new homes starting tonight!
Nuggets Free Agents:
And for the Nuggets ... Chris Andersen, Linas Kleiza (restructed), Dahntay Jones, Anthony Carter, Jason Hart, and Johan Petro should all be getting some calls from various teams around the league as well. The Nuggets have been saying all the right things regarding Andersen and it'll be interesting to see how quickly the two sides can hammer out a new deal.
The longer the Birdman remains on the market ... the more likely a team may come in and offer up a large deal. It'd be nice to lock him up and put any worry to rest that the Bird may be building a new nest away from Denver.
As for the Nuggets other free agents ... I think Denver can pretty much take a wait-and-see approach. L.K. should get some offers and might even have a team throw a big chunk of the MLE at him and it'll be very interesting to see how Denver counters any offers the Lithuanian gets.
Dahntay Jones has been rumored to be on the Celtics radar (click here for a link ... thanks Celtics Blog.)
Anthony Carter is a very interesting player to watch. Both Jeremy of Roundball Mining Company and Andrew of Denver Stiffs weigh the pros and cons of bringing A.C. back. And after reading Chris Sheridan's piece titled: Dead Money and cap ballast and realizing the Nuggets could be paying say ... Jamaal Tinsley $7.2 million, Marko Jaric $7.1 million, Antonio Daniels $6.6 million, or Marcus Banks $4.5 million (what were these GMs thinking?!) ... you see that Carter's minimum deals and production have been very underrated. If Denver can bring the veteran back for another one-year minimum deal at $1.3 million to help ease Ty Lawson's transition then I think it's a pretty good idea. If Lawson is as good as the Nuggets front office guys are thinking then A.C. will see his time dwindle next season anyway and the money he'll make will be very minimal as I pointed out with some of the hideous contracts in this paragraph. A.C. could get ballsy and try to play hardball with the Nuggets, but will a 34 year-old point guard get much interest outside of Denver for much more than the minimum anyway? I don't know, but I doubt it.
Jason Hart ... thanks for taking up a roster spot for us. If Carter cannot be re-signed and there are no other cheap options and Denver really trusts Lawson (unlikely) then Hart could be brought back on the cheap to help out at point guard when needed. Don't expect Hart back in Denver next season.
Johan Petro should get a look from a lot of NBA teams. The Nuggets did not offer Petro a qualifying at roughly $2.8 million and frankly Petro isn't worth that amount for the minutes he played (especially when you consider that Birdman may get a deal for $3 million to $6 million per season ... Petro isn't nearly as valuable as the Bird and shouldn't be in his ballpark money wise.)
Petro's best option would be to sign a cheap one or two-year deal with a team and play himself into a better contract offer down the road. Like we all know, young 7-footers with athleticism are pretty rare, but Petro shouldn't command big bucks ... unless some GM loses his mind. I'd like to see Petro back in Denver for the minimum and I'd really like to see the Nuggets go out and find a more reliable veteran big man to take his spot. I don't expect Petro to be back in Denver next season.

UPDATED: Just an initial list of guys I would love to see Denver talk to this offseason (in no particular order):
Unrestricted: Channing Frye (Blazeers/power forward), Zaza Pachulia (Hawks/center), Joe Smith (Cavs/power forward), Brandon Bass (Mavs/power forward), Sean Marks (Hornets/center), Chris Wilcox (Knicks/power forward), Grant Hill (Suns/small forward or shooting guard), and Shawn Marion (Raptors/small forward).
Restricted: Shannon Brown probably out of the question with Lawson in town (Lakers/point guard), Leon Powe (Celtics/power forward), Aaron Gray (Bulls/center), David Lee (Knicks/power forward), Marcin Gortat (Magic/center), and Paul Millsap (Jazz/power forward).
Some of these guys are definitely out of the Nuggets price range, but there are a few vets in here that could make a lot of sense. Like a Grant Hill who has been playing for peanuts ($1.9 million this season) in Phoenix in hopes of winning a title. Grant could be a nice scoring option off the bench in a Brent Barry or Michael Finley role for the Nuggets.
State your case for players you would like the Nuggets to talk with over the summer in the comments section.

Sean Marks, Shelden Williams
Yes they are not the greatest, but I could see as decent role players in the future
Anthony Parker I would be interested in as well, if he would sign cheaply.
Some of these seem like they are on their way out. Who in their right mind is going to want to pay Wally Szerbiak anything?

Yes, I don't see Wally having an easy time landing a job ... though he can still be the guy off the bench he can score occationally...
Maybe a minimum deal?

Leon Powe and Jarret Jack
We should bring them both in,. after all, we drafted them in the first place.

hahahaha...yes, we probably should have kept Powe, but I liked the LK for Jack deal.
Sort of wish we would have kept Jameer Nelson and got rid of Earl Boykins earlier.

Please
Anyone but Shawn Marion. I want to vomit on my own shoes every time I see that guys god awful jumpshot. Its bad enough we had to suffer through guys with unorthodox shooting styles like Camby, Juwan Howard, and KMart. But the Matrix has to have the fugliest shot in NBA history.

Althought it's ugly ... it's sort of pretty ugly to me.
I’ve always liked quirky shots and wondered how in the heck nobody ever got them to correct it.
Even Josh Childress has that crazy cocked-elbow when he shoots.
Makes you appreciate Ray Allen’s picture perfect stroke, that’s for sure.

Anthony Parker
This guy made $4.5 mil last season but he’s turning 34, and might be cheaper now. Say the Nuggets lose Dahntay to free agency and trade Kleiza. I think this guy could be good to bring in as a backup swingman. He may be on the decline, but he’s above average defender and shoots better than Dahntay or LK ever will.
He seems like one of those savvy vets that go unnoticed most of the season and prove to be a huge asset come playoff time.

Bass, I would love to see him in Denver, but I don't think they will have the cap space
Marion would be interesting, again I doubt we have the money, but if we deal Kleiza, I would like someone like Marion coming off the bench.

It feels like we have a solid core of players...
but we just need a couple of pieces to create an awesome team. Which position needs a boost the most? Some argue that CB7 aint getting younger and we need a young back up, others say we need more big guys, my personal belief is that we need a Lamar Odom type player; a freak athletic power forward that provides offense and rebounding off the bench to make up a bit for Kenyon’s decline in production. I like Milsap, but I doubt that Utah will let him leave. Zaza Pachulia played well for the hawks and his production would be great on the Nuggets to go along with Birdman.

I have to agree, I think if we could get a low post scoring threat off the bench, that would help tremendously
As much as I like the Birdman, he is very limited offensively, I think we need a legit scoring threat other than Nene in the post coming off the bench.

Scoring punch off the bench in the post would help out a great deal.
I really think Denver would have been a real threat if Antonio McDyess would have taken a minute to realize what a difference he could have made on this Nuggets team.

McDyess...could have been the missing piece...
he had his chance to make an impact, instead he acted like a baby and got his buy out. The management should not have caved into his demands and forced him to ride the pine or break the contract on his own.

Yes, but I believe the buyout was agreed to in order to complete the Billups trade.

Interesting
I think Boozer screwing the Jazz over means Millsap, Okur, or both are going to become available. I know us getting them is a pipe dream but I really like both Memo and Paul Millsap.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the Blazers are going to release Channing Frye and GK is going to take a look at him. I am against getting Frye because I think he is too soft to play behind our front line of Nene, Kmart and Bird. Getting the cold shoulder from Nate Mac in Portland tells me he didn’t play D, get rebounds, or make anyone else better when he was on the floor. Without following Frye too closely all I’ve seen him do is be tall and shoot jumpers. I think we need to get bigger AND tougher on the front line so although we need a scoring big man, getting a 7 footer who plays like a guard doesn’t make us better.

Memo decided to decline his option and is also returning to the Jazz.

And yes, the Blazers declined to tender a qualifying offer to Channing Frye ... making him unrestricted.

I don't have a problem with Frye
I think they let him go in Portland because they need cap space to try and sign Hedo. Also because they have a ton of depth at Center and PF

And he sucks
Nicest guy in the world….but he sucks at basketball (for an NBA player).
by Sabonis4Ever on Jul 2, 2009 3:41 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would not say he sucks
he is a role-player. he had a few good years in NY and then went to the blazers and did not pay as well. He is also young and some players take more time to develop.

A PF with a jumpshot that hits the board...
I’m not talking Dirk Nowitzki range, I’m reasonable. But we need someone that can come in and hit an 18 footer consistently to open things up a little more for Nene and Melo down low. I’m not saying he has to start over KMart either (who has really grown on me – hey it’s not his fault Kiki offered him a boat load of money and don’t act like you would’ve turned it down), just be there as an option. Players that come to mind are Marvin Williams (not the best rebounder), Villanueva (I think he’s out of our league), Hakim Warrick or Drew Gooden. Out of these options I think Warrick is the best option. The Griz have money, but they’re also getting younger and while Warrick is not old, he’s certainly not getting younger. He’s also got the syracus connection with Melo. Could Melo do some lobbying for us?!
by NugNugz on Jun 30, 2009 7:02 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Warrick is a restricted free agent though :(
also, the Nuggies have to resign Dahntay Jones – I love a player who gives a few hard shots a game. Use those fouls!

Rasheed Wallace
Low post scoring threat. He is a great defender. And with his attitude problems, he might be available on the cheap. Let’s get Billups on the phone with Sheed.

i’d be down for Sheed but supposedly he’s already going to boston

Villanueva
This guy would be a great pick up, even if we went into luxury tax territory. Villanueva is coming off his best year in points, minutes, and rebounding. His range is pretty good and he put up some monster numbers against the nuggets in a game. Im voting for this guy.
by distortedman on Jun 30, 2009 10:55 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Drew Gooden
I personally would rather have Drew Gooden than Chris Wilcox. He is better offensively and better rebounder and they would probably cost the same. I would love to see a backup front court of Bird and D-Good. That would be a colorful and fun frontcourt.
Two other guys I also like are Pops Mensah-Bonsu and James Singleton. They are both cheap and nice role players.

Channing Frye?
Apparently the Nuggies contacted him at midnight and I know they were after him a couple years ago when they almost traded K-Mart to NY for Penny Hardaway’s expiring. Apparently the reason the deal didn’t go through was because the Nuggets insisted that the Knicks throw in Frye and Isiah wouldn’t do it.
I’ve heard he’s soft though…on the other hand, he does have a nice jump shot. Thoughts? Definitely an upgrade from Petro.

I like Frye.
Denver has 3 tough front court guys with Nene, Bird, and KMart – but they are not the best outside threats aside from Nene who showed some good touch away from the hoop.
I think Frye would be a nice complimentary player with size and shooting touch for the roster.

you might have a point...
I do think Frye could really space the floor, but I need to know that he’s going to get some rebounds too. I thought we really struggled against the lakers in that area because they have 3 pretty good rebounders

Am I the only one here who realllly wants Trevor Ariza?
I think he’d be great off the bench. Would love to see him in a Nuggets uniform.

How much are you willing to pay him?
He’s getting at least the mid-level from the Lakers and probably the Cavs ($5.6 million) … I don’t think the Nuggets can afford that and he’s developing too much to get a lot of playing time with J.R. Smith and Carmelo eating up the minutes at the two and three.

Hmm I guess that's true.
Perhaps I’ll have to swallow my little dream. Haha. I wouldn’t give him anywhere in the 5 mil range to come off the bench and provide a bit of spark.
