Game 9 Preview & Thread: Nuggets at Bucks (6pm MDT)
Denver Nuggets at Milwaukee Bucks, Nov 11, 2009 6:00 PM MST
MILWAUKEE, WI - While spending the day here in Milwaukee with my grandmother (a lifelong Bucks fan), I've been able to get some insight into the team we're facing tonight.
I did this last season, as well, when my grandmother helped me preview the Nuggets/Bucks game on February 22nd (a Nuggets loss after losing to the Bulls the night before). This season's Bucks team is quite different from last season's: they're younger (read: cheaper), hungrier, play hard and have already surprised some people by starting out 3-2. But don't let me attempt to scout the Bucks properly, let's ask the real expert, my 97-year-old grandmother...
On Michael Redd being injured...
"Redd's on his way out. He lost a lot of weight in the offseason, which is a good thing, but he's not as intense as he once was. But he's getting older and that happens when you get older. The problem is that Charlie Bell, while I like him, can't replace Redd."
On Dan Gadzuric...
"I can't stand Gadgy. He's a nincompoop. He hasn't made a free throw all season."
On departed players...
"I'm sorry we lost Via Via (my grandmother's nickname for ex-Buck Charlie Villanueva). He tried to beat us the other night but couldn't. I also liked Ramon Sessions. I liked Richard Jefferson, but he never really did his part. He never played up to par."
On Brandon Jennings...
"He's fantastic. He's a good shot in the arm for us."
On head coach Scott Skiles...
"He's a good coach and the players like him."
On current GM John Hammond...
"He's sure as hell trying to get rid of some baggage and he's better than the last guy (Larry Harris) who made some mistakes and just lived off his father's name."
On Andrew Bogut...
"I love Andy Bogut. And how could I not? His name is Andy like my grandson!"
In other words, tonight's Non-Stiffs are Brandon Jennings and Andrew Bogut and the Stiffs are Dan Gadzuric and Charlie Bell. You heard it from an expert.

First in Defensive Efficiency
The Bucks can slow down the offense if the Nugs come out sluggish and play selfishly as they did in the 4th quarter last night. Denver still matches up well with the Bucks minus possibly Brandon Jennings. As long as they play with energy and use depth I like us, but we did play last night and travel, I think the Bucks were off yesterday
We win, end of story
No way we are losing to the Bucks tonight. I am really excited to see Jennings play though.
They have an upset on mind

Impressive
I hope I’m still as with it as your Grandmother at 97. My Grandmother is 92, but her short term memory is gone. We can talk about World War 2 all night, but there is no way she could discuss last nights basketball game. I hope your Grandmother stays in good health.
97 is an absolutely incredible age to still be paying attention to the NBA
Did Andrew fake it, or did he really ask his grandma? I’m sure we’ll see.

Brandon Jennings
Jennings was interviewed on ESPN2 last night. They complimented his speed and asked if there was anybody who could keep up with him. While they pressed him for more names, the only NBA player he said could match him was Denver’s own Ty Lawson.
These two Oak Hill alums should be fund to watch tonight.
Here is the link for the opponent's website, which was not posted when I post this comment:

Is she a hip-hop granny? LOL. First thought that popped into my head was your grandma doing a Lil Jon “Bia Bia” routine.
Nice though… good times. She’s pretty spot on too.
And B Jennings owns. I stole him in fantasy hoops.
Hey Frank,
That’s how it went last night … expect to be the same tonight.

Yeah
Arron Afflalo started last game, the first after JR Smith’s return
Anthony Carter and Joey Graham started as SG previously, but with JR back I expect the rotation at SG to be Afflalo with a good bit of Smith off the bench

As cool as Afflalo is starting, I'd really like to see Earl Start
I like the chemistry between Afflalo and Lawson
If J.R. keeps playing like he's playing and Afflalo keeps playing like he's playing
then I think GK gives J.R. the start since Afflalo can also bring some fire off the bench.

Nothing personal, guys...
Bogut bought a bunch of season tickets and gives them away to hardcores (there are a few of us) who then stand the whole game in one section and chant and stuff. They’ve been doing the “oy oy oy” thing every time Bogut scores as well. Good times.

Mindless panicing isn't the same as realistic concern
We have lots of season left, but if you’ve watching the effort put forth this is genuinely a team that cannot beat LA or any of the other elites until they come into games and play start to stop 100%. You can’t blame all of this on road trips or back to backs. Nuggets are falling into the trap of counting out teams before they play them and taking nights off.
Bleed Blue and Gold
by MileHighMonsters on Nov 11, 2009 9:00 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
One thing
The team has improved in the last 2 games. They are a little better than Miami/ATL, but there’s no consistency and they are making a ton of mental errors at crucial times. The rest will help, and LA will be without Gasol which gives us hope for beating the Lakers
What everyone needs to take from this is:
1. The longest road trip of the year.
2. A game that hardly anyone expected us to win @ Portland.
3. Three sets of back to back games. 19 more to go!
4. A 3-3 outcome.
Going .500 on the road is EXACTLY what the Nuggets needed to do and they did it. Am I disappointed they couldn’t pull out a 4-2 or even a 5-1? Of course. But they are doing fine, and some home rest is going to do them good.
Swats.
Hey guess what? Karl is not gonna get fired after leading the team to the first WCF in 25 years.
So deal with it. He’s the coach for now, and for the next 73 games this season.
Swats.
And how do you know he's going to be there for the next seventy three game
has he gotten an extension. Maybe the fact that he hasn’t is the writing on the wall
I'm glad the longest road trip is over
But the Nugs needed some momentum coming home to fight the Lakers. I know the Bucks are good but they looked much much tougher than the Nuggets tonight. The Portland loss is cancelled out by GK throwing the Miami game
by runningdonut on Nov 11, 2009 9:02 PM MST up reply actions
The shittiest pill to swallow of this entire road trip
is knowing that we lost to three teams that couldn’t even fill their arenas. They might as well have been home games with how silent they were until the end.

thoughts....
GK’s rotation down the stretch was absolutely killing me! Afflalo did a decent job on B Jennings in the 1st half, and either him or Lawson needed to be guarding the rook instead of CB in the 4th. At this point in his career, especially coming on a back to back night, Chauncey just can’t keep up with the young fella. And do you guys know how to defend the pick and roll???
And I am SOOO sick of Nene and his weak finger rolls! Go to the basket hard and dunk the damn thing! And while your at it knock somebody around once in a while. The guy could be a beast if he just had a mean streak and a little heart. Lets face it Bogut owned him tonight.
Final point…..Refs can really ruin a basketball contest!
Wait, one more thing. Is it clear now after 9 games how bad the nugs needed to use that trade exception to pick up another quality big?? Way to drop the ball front office!

And no way you can put the majority of that loss on GK.
The players are supposed to play and the fact is that they got outhustled tonight. They’re professionals. They know how to win games. This has little to do with the coaches gameplan.

If it has nothing to do with the coaches gameplan.
then why do we need a coach?
Read it again.
I said it has “little to do with the coaches game plan.” There’s only so much you can gameplan. At some point, the players have to perform. Tonight, they didn’t.

Finally
Some sense. Here’s a question – if you’re going to replace GK like so many of you are wont to do, who in the hell are you going to get that would be a better fit for the team?
Avery Johnson?
Swats.

AD is part of the same coaching staff
that you all are criticizing. That whole bench of coaches isn’t just for decoration. They’re part of it. A rookie HC is not the answer. This isn’t the NFL. There aren’t many Josh McDaniels in the NBA.

That's like saying you would make the same decision that your father would make.
He’s not GK and he is a Hall of Famer

A lot of missed open 3's in the fourth . .
I saw Melo line up two wide open, feet threes in the fourth. Billups and Earl both missed wide open looks as well . . .hard to look good offensively when you miss the easy opportunities for the shooters you want taking the shots.
Look
We are just saying GK needs to get it together. MileHigh said it best we have been going in the wrong direction since the Memphis game, the rotations are a mess and the confidence and team-based play are falling apart. There was never any excuse for starting AC or using a 3 guard lineup in any circumstance.
I would have preferred if we lost a few games early, shook up the lineups and gave everyone a role they can understand. That’s what all the good teams do, figure it out early and get rolling, look at the way Boston and Phoenix are playing. Afflalo starts and then he barely gets into the game past the first quarter. Come on man, don’t like GK doesn’t deserve a lick of criticism. The problems were easy to see and he’s been too slow to change anything
Simple Reason for Loss: Assists
Im sorry, but 17 assists is not going to get it done for the Nuggs. The Nuggs are practically unbeatable when they get 25 assists or more. The troubling issue with this road trip appears to be the collapse of their team offense. Way too much standing and watching Melo go one-on-one, quick shots, poor shots, and a lack of motion. It’s not just Melo either – - Chauncey has gotten into a bad habit of forcing shots, Kenyon tends to stand and watch, and Nene takes possessions off. This team can be great, but only if they share the ball, move on offense, and set solid picks. The offense over the last several games is pretty bad, and won’t get it done against the Lake Show, San Antonio or Portland. I agree that Karl doesn;t seem to be demanding more accountabiiity on offense. When it turns into the melo one on one show, the players and coaches seem to get deflated….
Yes, and they had 9 assists through three quarters.
So, 8 assists in the 4th Quarter and they almost pulled it off … hmm. Passing = wins.
