Breaking down a convoluted playoff picture and Thursday night’s games

NBA: Denver Nuggets at Washington Wizards Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The NBA Snapshot series was created as a daily check-in for Denver Nuggets fans. Every game matters as the season comes to a close, and the playoff bracket is altered constantly. These posts will help inform Nuggets fans of the day’s games, providing an update on the standings and which teams to root for from game to game.

Standings Update

  • Last night, a ton of action occurred with a number of teams losing games they were expected to win. The Rockets dropped a game against the Grizzlies on a SEGABABA. The Spurs lost. The Thunder lost. That changed Denver’s first round opponent to the Los Angeles Clippers, likely a dream scenario.
  • With Houston’s loss, Denver is five games ahead of Houston in the loss column. That means that the Nuggets have an opportunity to earn a 2 seed if they win their next several games. The magic number to grab the 2 seed is just 9, and if Denver wins their game on March 28th versus Houston, they will pick up three games on Houston based on Denver winning, Houston losing, and the tiebreaker swinging Denver’s way.
  • The road to the NBA Finals for Golden State could be made difficult in this configuration. They play Russell Westbrook, Paul George, Steven Adams’ hulking figure, and the rest of the Thunder in the first round. Then, they would probably play Utah’s stellar defense in the second round. If Denver somehow beat Houston in a playoff series, they would face a Golden State team in the West Finals that had to go through hell just to get there.

Games to watch Thursday night

Denver Nuggets vs Washington Wizards — 5:00 pm MST

Who to root for: The good guys. If Denver can make things difficult for Bradley Beal and not let anyone else go off, this should be a 20 point victory on the road.

Utah Jazz at Atlanta Hawks — 5:30 pm MST

Who to root for: Utah. Keep on winning games Utah. Make life atrociously difficult for the Rockets or Blazers in the first round of the playoffs.

Indiana Pacers vs Golden State Warriors — 8:30 pm MST

Who to root for: Indiana. If the Pacers were to win this one, the Nuggets (if they take care of business at Washington) would sit in first place by themselves at the end of the night. That would be an excellent feeling. I don’t expect this to happen, but it would be really fun to talk about.
