High fives all round for Ty Lawson and his contract-extension talk.
Lang Greene of HoopsWorld.com posted a recent interview with Ty Lawson, where the Denver guard was quoted as saying:
"We've already been negotiating and talking about it," Lawson told HOOPSWORLD about the status of contract talks at Las Vegas Summer League. "So my agent and the team will probably come to an agreement real soon."
Lawson of course referring to the Denver Nuggets in his quote. Could Lawson possibly sign an agreement before JaVale McGee does? This is good news for the Nuggets as locking up the 24 year-old (he'll be 25 in November) long-term is another step in the right direction for the Nuggets.
Lawson saw his stats balloon to 16.4 points per game, 6.6 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game last season, his first as the full-time starter. And his scoring stats rose in the playoffs against the Lakers to 20.2 points. When Lawson scored 20+ points in the playoffs (four times) the Nuggets went 2-2 and when Lawson scored 11 points or less (three times) the Nuggets went 1-2.
Many believe that Lawson is on the verge of a true breakout season and his future in Denver appears bright. While Lawson might put up great numbers next season, don't look for him to appear in an All-Star game as the competition out West will be gruesome with Steve Nash, Chris Paul, and unfortunately Jeremy Lin all remaining very popular -- hopefully Lawson can continue to change minds.
The biggest questions, just how much money will Denver pony up for Lawson? He is eligible for the rookie max-five-year extension. And just how much better can Lawson become?
Who will sign first ... JaVale McGee with a new deal or Ty Lawson with an extension?
