Mavericks vs. Nuggets recap: Lifeless Nuggets fall to Mavericks

The Mavericks were looking for some revenge tonight and they got it with a 105-95 win over the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets couldn't get out of their own way in this one with too many turnovers and too many missed opportunities ...

Star-divide

First Quarter:

  • Nuggets going with Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Julyan Stone, Nene, and Chris Andersen to start. Stone and Birdman total surprises to replace Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov and/or Kosta Koufos. Mavericks starting a cast that could double as the cast from Tales from the Crypt.
  • Birdman decides that since he's starting that he should also be taking 16 foot jumpers ... starts 0-1 from the field. 8:13 mark, Bird uses a ball fake to blow by Dirk Nowitzki out by the three point line and gets himself to the foul line ... 0-2 from the free throw line. Following play, Dirk buries a jumper in Birdman's face. 12-5 Dallas.
  • First substitutes for the Nuggets at the 6:15 mark ... Andre Miller for Stone and Rudy Fernandez for Afflalo who has two quick fouls. Lawson dishes one to Bird for an easy dunk ... it's 19-12 Dallas. Denver really struggling to get the offense going.
  • Lawson owns Dallas, he could easily go for big numbers tonight ... he has 7 points and 2 assists so far and it's 21-14 Dallas ... as I was typing, Birdman bricks a layup ... he's pulled with 2 points on 1-3 shooting and 0 rebounds in 7 minutes ... not really the spark George Karl was looking for.
  • 2:38 to go in the first and it's 27-20 Dallas ... let's see how this one finishes, not looking good for Denver's defense as Mavs only average 93 points per game. Dallas finishes on a 6-5 bucket trading run, up 33-25.
First quarter recap: Mavs lead 33-25. The Nuggets defense looks pretty terrible. Dallas getting wide open threes and wide open layups. Nuggets have to defend one or the other ... can't give up both. On offense, the Nuggets are still without a consistent shooter and the whole team seems to get contagious on hot and cold streaks, so damn bizarre. Nuggets 2-6 from deep and Mavs open 3-7 and score a season high 33 in one quarter ... ouch.

Second Quarter:
  • Rodrigue Beaubois opens the second by draining a three on a step over move off the pick-and-roll, 36-25 Mavs. Would have been a good idea to start Fernandez or Kenneth Faried at small forward and use Stone off the bench to bother Beaubois.
  • 9:40 mark ... Dirk jogs funny.
  • 8:55 mark ... Denver gives up about 46 second chance opportunities to the Mavs, Dirk nails a jumper to give Dallas a 41-31 lead. The Nuggets need rebounders on the floor, like I don't know KENNETH FARIED or I don't know ... I may go stuff my face with cotton balls. To answer the rebounding woes Karl takes Koufos, all 7-feet of him, out for Nene and leaves Al Harrington in at power forward. Don't expect good things. Turnovers galore for the Nuggs as well ... three straight possessions now. Nuggs have 7 turnovers ... I remember when they used to have 10-15 a game.
  • 5:27 mark ... 51-37 Dallas. Let's see how Denver responds to close the half.
  • 3:16 Afflalo picks up his third foul. What is wrong with AAA? He's 1-4 tonight and 0-2 from downtown ... what a slump this is turning out to be for him.
  • From the 5:27 mark the scoring battle ends with Denver on a 16-13 run, it's 64-53 Dallas at the half. Brutal half for the Nuggets as Dallas scores their highest point total of the season after two quarters. Ouch.
Second quarter recap: 64-53 Dallas. Effort and energy can go a long way in the NBA. Teams do not come to play every night, so the team that does has a huge advantage. The Nuggets look like they're playing game 78 of 82 and have no shot of making the playoffs. The Nuggets are going through the motions and the Mavs are making them pay ... a little bit. Dallas goes 3-10 from deep in the quarter while the Nuggets go 1-5 ... bleh! Let's see what the second half holds as Lawson hurt his left shoulder breaking up a fastbreak to end the first half.

Third Quarter:
  • Birdman is back after playing the opening 7 minutes ... Mozgov role. Harrington starts in place of Stone ... Mavs come out on a 4-0 run ... 4-3 as Big Al buries a three in the corner.
  • 7:28 go to ... Dallas up 75-61. The Nuggets can't get out of their own way tonight ... once again. Turnovers, not guarding anyone, letting miss-matches occur off bad switches ... might go lay in the snow for awhile. Denver can't seem to get the lead under 10 points, a big run would change this whole game. Captain Obvious enters the building!
  • Next uncontested three (81-64 Dallas and two straight made threes) and I'm jumping off my deck. If I break my arms then Andy and Jeff will have to cover these awful games or I can learn how to type with my nose by bashing my face into the keyboard.
  • 2:49 left in the quarter and it's 83-72 Mavs ... Nuggets need to get it under 10 points to start the fourth ...
  • It's 87-78 Mavs as the quarter closes with Nuggets going on mini 6-4 run, Denver had a chance to get it much closer ... bad rebounding and a charge by Big Al got in the way. But it's a 9-point Mavs lead.
Third quarter recap: Dallas up 87-78. Mavs go 3-8 from deep in the period and are 9-25 in the game (36%). The Nuggets show flashes of getting right back in this one, but just can't seem to get over the hump. Will be an interesting fourth ... too little too late or some Mile High Magic?

Fourth Quarter aka Winning Time:
  • Afflalo opens the quarter making a layup and somehow has 12 points ... AAA passes up a three and gets stuffed as he goes for the layup instead of the dunk. Afflalo has his third straight scoring chance of the quarter and gets fouled before getting the shot up ... Rudy swatted on layup and loses the ball on the way up ... AAA bricks a three. 87-80 Mavs.
  • 8:55 AAA another brick. Nuggets down 91-80 as Denver cannot capitalize on ANYTHING in this game. So many opportunities, no execution by the Nuggs.
  • 7:45 mark and Dallas hits their season point average of 93 ... bad defense tonight from the Nuggets. Dallas up 93-81. Kosta Koufos gets screwed by the refs on offensive clear out with left arm, bullshit call. Rudy hits a layup, but Nuggets still trading baskets ... 95-83. Afflalo with another brick ... as usual.
  • 5:27 to go and it's 95-83 Dallas ... need a minor miracle.
  • 3:26 to go and the Nuggets are once again getting run at home ... 101-87 Dallas. Barf.
Fourth quarter recap: Dallas wins 105-95. This Nuggets team has a lot of problems right now. The biggest issues are defense (which includes rebounding), turnovers, and bad shot selection. When you can't make long distance shots you should stop taking them. The Nuggets ran out of gas and somehow never really ever put the peddle down.

Game Recap: Dallas wins 105-95. Only thing that could piss me off more about this game is probably the fact that I just lost about six paragraphs of this recap by fat-fingering my keyboard ... stupid save draft button. Dammit! Dammit Dammit!!

The Nuggets looked terrible tonight. Arron Afflalo tried to get himself going and had 12 points, but he was just 4-12 shooting and a miserable 2-8 from downtown. If you can't get your outside shot going ... why not stop and do something else? Well, Afflalo's shake-and-bake dribble drives remind me of a Knowshon Moreno run ... lots of footwork and show, but just a 1-yard run. Afflalo finished with a team low -21 in the +/- department and is making the off-season contract look like a mistake this season. AAA could still bounce back, but might the Nuggets make him expendable if the right trade comes along?

Speaking of trades ... George Karl hasn't really used Chris Andersen since January 27th and after six games he suddenly plays 19 minutes off the bench one night and 14 minutes tonight (seven in the first half and seven in the second half) after being a starter. It would seem to me the Nuggets have been trying to showcase Birdman a little bit, and the injury bug happened to help them out in that department. We were told before the game on Altitude that Bird was starting because the coaches believe he has played well with Nene in the past, well that isn't the case anymore. While I appreciate what Andersen has done with his time in Denver, he is no longer the same player and the team must turn to other options.

The Nuggets need to get back to using their defense to set up their offense, taking care of the ball, and running teams off the floor. It might be too much to ask a team to run, run, run for 66 condensed games, but the Nuggets have some young blood on their team that should allow them to try some different things. Rough go of it right now, but this is the ebb-and-flow of the season ...

Views you can use or throw up at:
  • The Nuggets were just 9-26 from downtown and the Mavs were even worse at 9-28 from deep.
  • Lawson finished the game 5-16, including 2-7 from deep, from the field for 16 points ... not a great offensive night for The Blur. Lawson did record 10 of Denver's 25 assists though.
  • The Mavs grabbed 11 of 41 rebounds in the Nuggets zone ... that's 26% of the available second chance opportunities. Going with small ball makes my head hurt.

Losers of six out of seven

They will need a trade soon to refresh the team. Otherwise Karl won’t finish the season.

...Karl won't finish the season.

Mr. Hastings started to talk about the nugs being in a funk, then never finished his thought, probably on purpose. But the players are in a funk and not giving energy nor executing, resulting in 6 of 7. I don’t know when Karl’s time will be up, but the FO has assembled a plethora of above-average talent, and not seeing results.
I just want to know when the offense is going to run a play… maybe I’ll catch that on dvr and loop it.

You guys are crazy if you think

Masai will fire George. He loves George. And so does Stan. No way does Karl get fired. Not saying I agree with it, but it is reality folks.

Now is the time.. to stick together..

It is a major rough patch. 6 games in 9 nights. tomorrow with be 10 in 7 nights. This is the worst part of the condensed schedule for the Nuggets. And it is his hitting them like a ton of bricks. I actually thought they played hard physically tonight, but definitely looked tired and frustrated mentally. Lots of bad turnovers and sloppy play.

I am cheering for them to break out of the funk. I like this team. Don’t want to see it broken up. But it is up to them.. not me.

Go Nuggets.

¿REALLY?

who writes this shit? birdman is an energy guy and not great at starting; showcase for a trade…really…so much hate…AAA has been struggling too so whats your solution…(tradehim?) and Gallo has an off night…(tradehim?) and Faried doesn’t play so…(tradehim?)

as far as his ability..yeah he as lost a step. But he’s gained weight (muscle) and developed a nice midrange shot (yeah he makes them, do you watch other games??) He is a good role player who should be used when needed. As for Kouf, we need to keep developing him.
I believe andersen will take a pay cut to end his career the same place he turned his life around. Let’s respect the bird.

by orangeNblue52 on Feb 8, 2012 10:32 PM MST reply actions

kufous is alot better than bird right now... hes our only real shot blocker

Lets face it birdman is only trade bait right now, sitting out 6 games straight or whatever it was pretty much is writing on the wall for him, it’d be nice for him to finish his career here but hes only taking up salary that we need to sign other players (lawson, chandler)

by 5baker5 on Feb 8, 2012 10:37 PM MST up reply actions

Just so you know, NBA players cannot take pay cuts to current contracts, it’s against the CBA. Are you saying Birdman has developed a nice mid-range game? I agree he has a decent shot at times, but he’s not a consistent shooter.

I believe the Nuggets, with a lot of assets, will be active at the trade deadline and guys that are not fitting in could possibly be on the block. I love Afflalo’s game and have been rooting for him to turn it around, but if you have a chance to improve the team by dealing him … why not pull the trigger? Why keep him?

And as far as putting words in my mouth … I’ll just let that go as I don’t see you around here much.

by Nate Timmons on Feb 8, 2012 10:43 PM MST up reply actions

and another thing...

Will we look back in three years and say ‘damn, we should have traded him when people thought he could still turn it around.’

Yeah, that’s a logical question to ask right now, in my opinion.

Yeah, just ranting

I basically just made an account to rant because of that terrible game. Good points, you obviously know much more about the business side of things then I do, so I will leave you to do the analyzing and me to do the screaming at the t.v. No hard feelings?

by orangeNblue52 on Feb 8, 2012 11:06 PM MST up reply actions

I never have hard feelings man and I don’t want to see AAA get traded, but I think he’s leaving himself open to that possibility. I love what Birdman has done for the team, but with Koufos, Mozgov and Faried waiting in the wings along with Harrington, Gallo, and possibly Chandler being in the mix, Bird makes to much to sit on the bench …

'he is a good role player'

This is the phrase people use for players they like but who also are pretty untalented.

If I was in the NBA I would hate being called a ‘good role player’ because it is the same thing as saying ‘nice guy but can’t buy a shot’.

Yeah neither of my teams had any luck with Texas tonight

Although Portland didn’t have one of their leading players out with an injury and Kyle Lowery got injured in the third quarter (didn’t look too good) and weren’t starting a rookie so not sure what our excuse was …

by somanluna1 on Feb 8, 2012 10:50 PM MST up reply actions

I'm afraid there's going to be a lot of analysis

on “whats wrong with the Nuggets”

The media has to do it, the coaches have to pretend that they dont know and still insist on high standards

Fans will have to respond as if they, we, dont know.

Whats the analysis for? This simply is not the personnel we hoped would be on the court for us. From most of this year, on, injuries have turned our line up into a 2nd rate squad and its getting worse.

It was nice for Houston and Dallas that they beat us, but who’s “us” exactly. Lets get real, they beat our B team and there is no real reason for us to expect our scrubs to beat competitive Western teams.

We need a minor miracle to be in the hunt for playoffs after February or an incredible March & April. So start praying for one or the other.

I have personally tempered my expectations

As someone stated above, it is a completely different squad than what we started with, and quite frankly, still expect to end with. We’re missing our BEST player and center. When everyone’s healthy we can and do hang with the best teams in the league.

By no means does that mean I am satisfied with the roster we have, even when it’s healthy, so I must say I would be thrilled to see the Nuggets package some players to make this team better. It’s too bad AAA is struggling, because he has shitty value right now. But even if he was tearing up (by his standards that means hitting 6-8open shots a game), I would still insist on trading him. He is the weak link in the starting rotation. Mozzy’s not much yet, but he clearly has upside. What’s AAA’s upside? I thought it was the fact that he didn’t have a downside, but that’s clearly not the case.

Like I said, I’m not too shaken up that we lost. That’s expected. I want our team to make a trade because I think we’re very close being an elite team when our roster is healthy.

by RoxWS2014 on Feb 8, 2012 11:04 PM MST reply actions

I like that,

“What’s AAA’s upside? I thought it was the fact that he didn’t have a downside.”
… well said.

by Nate Timmons on Feb 8, 2012 11:07 PM MST up reply actions

have also tempered my expectations, for those reasons & more

I saw something on RMC today that caught my eye. I’m a Denver expatriate, moved away in ‘98, so I don’t get to see/hear much local coverage of the team. Jeremy mentioned in a post (from this morning, I think) that both Josh & Masai are on record as having said, at the beginning of the season, that they know the current squad, even when healthy, is not actually a championship contender. They both said “We’re one player away,” although there’s apparently no info available as to who that player might be & how/when they’ll land him.

Anyway, they have a long view and a plan that they’re building towards. This year, barring some miracle, is not going to be the Nuggets’ year. But a couple of smart and committed guys are working towards that.

I hope to see this awful losing streak stop and for guys to get healthy and for the team to become fun to watch again. I still want them to make the playoffs this year and win a series somehow, that’s my big hope. But more importantly than how they finish this season, I want to see them keep building. I’m more interested in seeing young guys develop this year than anything else.

Let’s see how long I can stick with that attitude. It made tonight’s loss a little easier to take, at least.

"There's no way I would've ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team' ... I was trying to beat those guys." -Michael Jordan

See then George Karl's coaching is retarded

8 man rotations on multiple games in a compacted season is a recipe for injury. Injuries beget more injuries; ask Greg Oden. So if we are truly building towards something, having a coach that is running our youngsters into the ground and keeping the rooks on the bench isn’t the best way about doing it.

Something better be cooking.

My expectations weren't that high in the first place

I knew we’d have an exciting team with plenty of ups and downs. Those growing pains were inevitable due to youth and new faces. Yet just as when Presti was hired in Seattle (former Sonics fan here) and made all those ostensibly wild moves, it was plain as day that the Nuggets front office had a very clear medium-term plan to build a contender around Gallinari, Nene and Lawson.

It was also obvious that part of that plan was team development this year, and maybe one or two more years: no one involved with the Nuggets could have believed they would go very deep in this year’s postseason. Rather, they would work very hard on getting at least ten players as many minutes as possible, along with establishing a system and a culture that could win in the relative near-term. The pieces were in place, with maybe one more move to be made.

It turns out my reasonable and limited expectations were absurdly high. If the first 26 games are any indication—and what other indication would there be?—there is no chance of coherence for the Denver Nuggets under George Karl. I’ve lost all faith in his approach to the game, especially his in-game coaching, if that is even an applicable term in his case.

Does the front office agree? Let’s hope so. If not, we’ll continue to have a very entertaining team that, when healthy, can compete with the league’s best. On some nights. On plenty of others, we’ll be left wondering what might have been.

No. More. Stickyball.

I just can't understand why J-Ham and Faried aren't logging consistent minutes

Teams are benefitting from their 1st and 2nd year players. The Knicks very well may turn their whole season around. T-wolves have become relevant again. And who would have thought Kyrie would be this good?

Meanwhile, in Denver, GK coaches with his thumb up his ass.

the problem wasn't the energy the problem was leadership

When I mean leadership I am speaking of two specific areas. The COACHING staff and the STARTING PG. First with GK. Whoever thought it was a great idea to switch every pick and roll is an idiot. We got caught on the switch. Dallas would post up the mismatch we would double and then Bird or Al didn’t rotate quick enough…Splash…3 ball. Too many times we get caught on a pick and get rubbed so that we can’t defend the three…Where are the adjustments? Where are the hedges? Don’t like the defense that I am seeing called from the sideline and don’t like the fact that adjustments aren’t taking place.

Next…TY LAWSON. I love Ty’s game, but let’s face it he has to be more aggressive. Stop picking up your dribble and take it to the whole and dish more effectively. Also please notice the mismatches when you have Nene being guarded by Dirk or Brandon Wright and Koufus being defended by Wright and Mahimi. The problem with our offense is that we are doing the opposite of how we are getting burned on D. We are not forcing the defense to double. We need find the mismatch post it up and then dish out when the double team comes. I guarantee then our three ball will start falling. Ty needs to take ownership of the offense and make sure these things happen . Why is it on him? Well we know George doesn’t call any plays and leaves it up to his players…well then….Ty,,handle it, and George since you don’t call offensive plays, coach up some defense that makes sense and works. See the Bulls if you need some help.

Nothing is wrong with the talent level on this team.

by Bigdorph on Feb 9, 2012 12:30 AM MST reply actions   1 recs

...right now the blueprint is out on how you beat this team

expose the mismatches from our constant switching the pick and rolls, aggressively pick the defender pass to the open man and hit the 3. On defense, pack the defense in and make us shooot….Ty will get frustrated and not drive, Nene will get frustrated and fade away. Can’t run when they keep pulling the ball out of the basket…..

So…anyone think the coaching staff can help the team out???? Isn’t that their job to come with a better plan. We all know what the definition of insanity is….

George Karl implosion

I know we have a lot of injuries right now and that the schedule is brutal. Dallas came in with 3 days rest and we are tired. But Karl is an emotional coach and when things go bad for him they tend to spiral out of control. There are a lot of these implosions on his resume. It feels like another one.

by gonugs on Feb 9, 2012 12:59 AM MST via Android app reply actions

One more time: It's not the losses, it's the inexplicable manner in which we're losing

There’s no apparent rhyme or reason to the Nuggets’ play. The defensive lapses can’t even be called lapses anymore, since there seems to be no decent scheme. It’s tough to pin the lack of offensive execution on the players, since there’s no pattern to the rotation and no apparent in-game adjustments made to attack the effective defenses teams are mounting. Not to mention little play-calling.

How can players get comfortable? Stone starts the game wildly out of position and then disappears on the bench after a few minutes, never to return. Koufos doesn’t start after starting all the games since Mozgov went down, and then his minutes don’t even make any sense. KK has been pretty effective when he’s on the floor; imagine what he might do if he got regular time in a more traditional rotation, one in which roles are fairly well defined.

Injuries make stability difficult to maintain, to be sure. And we missed Brewer’s energy and quickness on defense tonight. But none of that has to translate to the appearance—and brutal reality—of a team in total disarray, which is what the Nuggets are.

No. More. Stickyball.

by LongWindedHank on Feb 9, 2012 2:27 AM MST reply actions

I agree wholeheartedly

regarding the rotations. In a game like last night, when we were getting mismatch after mismatch because of switching, Karl needed to make an adjustment. Either stop switching or get more size in there. The small ball lineup was not working. I personally think that if Al is in the game, you need KK in the game. I also don’t understand Karl’s use of Stone. Stone can flat out defend, one thing we were lacking big time last night especially when AAA kept getting exposed by Carter. Karl should roll the dice once in a while and try a different matchup. The team needs a spark, and something doing that is just the spark needed. And Faried, goodness…where do I start. I know offensively he is not very polished but he does so many other intangible things, like REBOUND! When you can’t get a rebound to save your life, gee…maybe through in the guy that set the all time rebound record in college history!

Karl is frustrating at times for sure.

didnt watch last night

have to stay away from awhile.

but same problem all season, cant defend high PnR. just run that all game and we’re doomed.

and now teams figured out how to stop our offense. pack the paint and force us to shoot jumpers. minimize your turnovers and we cant get on the break. will GK adjust? i doubt it, but we’ll see.

also a possibility that all that running early in the season could have actually wore our team out. scary to think, we might have peaked in the first month of the season lol.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
