Mavericks vs. Nuggets: A home win is much needed (7pm MST)

Dallas Mavericks at Denver Nuggets, Feb 8, 2012 7:00 PM MST

Don't look now, look now - your Denver Nuggets have lost three straight games and three straight home games, as well! Who would have thought that at this point in the season, with 12 home games, that Denver would have just one more home win than Minnesota, Golden State, and Sacramento? Things don't get easier as the Dallas Mavericks, who have had three full days off, are in town and looking for revenge after losing to the Nuggets 115-93 on Dec. 26th.

Star-divide

Game: 26

Records:
Denver:
15-10 (7-5 at home)
Streak: Lost 3
Dallas: 14-11 (5-6 on the road)
Streak: Lost 3

Injuries:
Denver
: Arron Afflalo (left ankle sprain/big toe sprain) and Rudy Fernandez (lower back strain) are both probable. Nene (left heel strain) is a game-time decision. Timofey Mozgov (left ankle sprain) and Danilo Gallinari (left ankle sprain) are both out. Corey Brewer (personal reasons) is doubtful tonight.
Dallas: Jason Kidd (right calf strain) is day-to-day. Sean Williams (sent to D-League) is not with the team.

Television: Altitude

Season Series: 1-0, Nuggets.

Opposition's Take: Mavs Moneyball

Things are looking a little grim for the Nuggets as the grueling February schedule stops for no man. And the Nuggets are close to having no men available for this game, well ... not really. Something is going on with the left legs of your Denver Nuggets.

Nene, Afflalo, Mozgov, and Gallo all have issues with their left legs. Is there a way to correct this wrong with a right? Anyway, it looks like Afflalo will be back tonight and Nene could be as well. This bodes well for Denver, who was forced to start rookies Julyan Stone and Kenneth Faried against the Houston Rockets Monday night (Feb. 6th).

It may not be a bad thing to get the young players some much needed on-court experience, but the Nuggets are a completely different team when they are without their key guys. Finding a way to win without Gallo is going to be a difficult process for the Nuggets.

Gallo leads the way for Denver with 17.0 points per game and with him out the Nuggets must find a way to make up not only for his scoring, but for his defense and rebounding (5.2 rebounds per game), as well. In a short time the Italian Stallion has proved to be a key member for the Nuggets. About the only good thing going George Karl, with Gallo's 3-4 week absence, is that he has been forced to sit the talented forward a couple times late in games due to his cold shooting nights.

The Nuggets still don't have that "go-to" scorer down the stretch, as the team is the emphasis and without Gallo the Nuggets might find themselves in a lot more games that come down to the wire. We all know who Dallas likes to use to close games, Dirk Nowitzki.

The big German has missed four games this season due to injury and is averaging just 17.2 points per game, his lowest scoring total since his second season in the league back in the 1999-2000 season. In fact, Nowitzki hasn't averaged under 23 ppg since the 2003-04 season.

The Mavericks have struggled to score the ball this season as a whole. As a team, the Mavs average just 93.8 ppg - that's good for just 10th place out West. But the Dallas defense has been a good one as they are virtually tied with the Lakers for allowing the least amount of points out West with 91.1 ppg.

Denver didn't have any issues in their season opener in the Big-D scoring points with 115, but this is a gimpy Nuggets squad that needs some sort of spark to get back to their early season winning ways. The Nuggets always play well versus Dallas and hopefully tonight they will get back in the win column.

Afterall, just one game separates the fourth place Nuggets and the eighth place Mavericks ...

Views you can use:

  • Back on Dec. 26th, Ty Lawson scored a team-high 27 points in Denver's win in Dallas. The Nuggets will need another strong performance from their starting point guard.
  • In the first match-up of the season, Al Harrington and Andre Miller combined to score 36 points for the Nuggets against the Mavs. Denver's bench will need to come up big tonight ... just like they have been doing all season.
  • Stiffs reader U.N. Fab Five informed me that the Nuggets haven't lost four-straight games since the 2007-08 season, the only NBA team not to do so. Have to keep that streak alive!

The Desperation Game...

So both teams needs this win badly. Dallas is still old no matter what, so come on Nuggets! Run ’em out of the gym. Even more important to run without Gallo. He was turning into the best option when the shot clock was winding down. Ty is the one that needs to step it up. It is his time to shine and wreak havoc on the Association.

Hope the shooting touch returns for the Nuggets. If they have a clank fest like they did against Houston, it will another night of yelling at the TV.

about Kenneth Faried as I was last game? C’mon kid, rock em.

"When I played, this is how I liked to play," Karl said. "It’s a combination of North Carolina, Phoenix Suns, Doug Moe. There is a commitment to running all the time."
Smith's mistakes throughout the series have bothered Karl. "And then, of course the one with eight seconds to go, from 50 feet," Karl said. "I just love the dignity of the game being insulted right in front of me."

Guangsha (Chandlers Chinese team) wins

By 1 point. Chandler had 16 pts, 9 boards in the win. This puts them in the 8th spot for the postseason. JR’s team loses and so they fall to 9th.

Big game between the two teams in a couple days. Pretty much an elimination game for Jr’s team, as they’d fall back 1.5 games with a loss, and would lose any tiebreaker with Guangsha.

indeed

I think Marlowe or Hastings gave some stat during the Rockets game that Houston was averaging about 30% on 3-pointers for the season… they came into the Pepsi Center and went 10/19. THIS SHOULDN’T KEEP HAPPENING.

If the Nuggets want to not give up the rim while still protecting the 3

They should try the version of zone I call “Rover out of his house”. Here how I discribe it. Starts with a simple box zone. Hi and low posts. The “Rover” covers the ball. As the offense passes the ball around, the “Rover” rotates in and out of the box. It may sound confusing but I’ve seen it executed in person and it works if done right.

Dont think its a box and one

In a box and 1 defense. The four defenders form a box as described above. The one marks the best scorer man to man. Sounds like the rover defense he is describing rotates the fifth man in and out of the box.

by gonugs on Feb 8, 2012 2:29 PM MST up reply actions

It is a version of Box plus 1.

I’m surprised more nba “zones” are not set up like this(with the defensive 3 second rule). It’s a tough zone to beat. it can’t hurt to change it up for a 5 minute span to throw off a team and it gives the chance for steals and easy fast breaks.

Not trying to predict what Karl will do.
He should start Ty, AAA, Hamilton, Nene and Koufos. Then have Dre, Rudy, Al, Bird and Faried come off the bench.
I agree with you though. It makes too much sense for Karl.

by gonugs on Feb 8, 2012 2:40 PM MST up reply actions

I know what you mean

They are saying stone will get the start at the 3. I would much prefer if Harrington or hamilton got the start instead of him

not sure how that works...

maybe you can provide me some insight. why exactly is a backup point guard starting at small forward? stone may be big for a guard, but he’s not THAT big, nor is he much of a scorer.

by DeezNuggs on Feb 8, 2012 2:48 PM MST up reply actions

Dante Jones roll..

Just wants him to play D for the first 5 minutes. Then it is going to be Rudy or AAA or maybe even J-Ham at 3 spot.

Karl

It’s George Karl. The dude makes weird decisions. That’s why Stone is starting at the 3

I think

The rooks should get an opportunity these next couple weeks. We should see if they will contribute to us at all. If they don’t then I think we should make a move. That’s just my opinion

Nuggets All Day Everyday

by TheMozgovCocktail on Feb 8, 2012 2:43 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I didnt mention Stone

Starting Stone at the 3 is ridiculous in my opinion. Karl would paly 5 point guards at once if he could. Can we please have a shooter on the court to spread the floor and get these defenses to stop clogging the lane?

by gonugs on Feb 8, 2012 2:50 PM MST up reply actions

EG!

Would love Gordon here…. although there’s no way we’d have any shot at him. The League doesn’t want NOH to be locked into long term deals, and the only players we have of value have big contracts…. unless you count Ty, which makes no sense for either team.

by UKnowULovedVanQwik on Feb 8, 2012 2:56 PM MST up reply actions

Fair point

All I know is that Gordon doesn’t want to be in New Orleans. he even rejected a long term extension from them

I am looking at the matchup.

Julyan stone vs. Shawn Marion. They are both 6-7. Marion could take advantage, but Marion isn’t your typical SF.

by Btbuff67 on Feb 8, 2012 5:48 PM MST up reply actions

He seems to be able to score

and with Gallo out and AAA struggling we might as well see if SOMEONE can hit a damn 3. I’m willing to give him a shot, if he misses 2 in a row sit him down, if he gets hot keep him in…..obviously makes too much sense though

by JBnuggs on Feb 8, 2012 2:50 PM MST up reply actions

I would really like to see him come back to the Nuggets but it will never happen as long as we have Karl. I was reading on the web and an interesting destination where JR could land is Minnesota

Nuggets All Day Everyday

by TheMozgovCocktail on Feb 8, 2012 3:02 PM MST reply actions

As much hate/flak JR gets from everybody

for poor defense, erratic shooting, poor decisions, low basketball IQ……I think he might always be my favorite Nugget. Sure he could ruin a game with terrible shot selection, or selfishness, or lack of defense. But there is literally nothing better than watching JR Smith dominate a game (8+ three pointers, sensational dunks, etc). When Im at Nuggets games, JR is the ultimate crowd pleaser, and no matter how much you despise him that means something. He is a showman and is always looking to please the crowd…..which I absolutely love about him.

by blitzzburgh on Feb 8, 2012 6:57 PM MST up reply actions

I so loved JR

and wanted badly for him to get his game and his head together. He could turn the game into a delight. And so often did. Sad for me and so many others not to have him in Denver contributing to things.

Chandler seems to have interest from Toronto, any chance Denver does a sign and trade with them and maybe get that 1st round pick from them? Lord knows it wont be anything out of the top 8….

Chandler situation..

http://www.roundballminingcompany.com/2012/02/08/nene-afflalo-to-return-against-mavericks-wilson-chandler-calrification/

One of the other blogs breaks down the Chandler situation in detail.. and no way Toronto would give up a 1st rd pick for Chandler (even if that could happen).

by djyoung71 on Feb 8, 2012 3:42 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed

A first round pick is a lot to give up for him, unless it had heavy protection behind it/wasn’t owed for 4-5 years.

But there are a lot of teams that are in more win now mode, then they are about developing young talent. Could definitely get a pick in the middle of the draft for him imo.

Hope we can retain him if the price is right honestly.

by nugzin2040 on Feb 8, 2012 3:47 PM MST up reply actions

Ahhh thanks

for the clarification, that being said, I think if Denver signs him back, they should start him at the two and Gallo at the 3, I hope I’m wrong but 40 million for Afflalo is looking like a mistake…

by maahalo on Feb 8, 2012 3:47 PM MST up reply actions

Excellent piece

The quick and dirty:

1) All sign and trades prohibited in season. So not an option with Chandler.
2) RFA can only sign offer sheets prior to March 1. If Chandler were to sign one prior to March 1, Denver could match or let him walk.
3) After March 1, Chandler can only sign with Denver.
4) If Chandler fails to sign with Denver for this season, he goes back into RFA this summer.

if Chandler wants to play in the NBA again, Denver gets first pick at him. That’s really going to bum out Clipper and Laker fans who believe every good player is entitled to them….

Sorry to getcha going like that

I thought it was so over the top as to be a joke on its face. And yes, the Marbury era was really sad for the Knicks. I’m the type of fan that wants to see other franchises thrive (most of the time, anyway), so I cringed at much of what went down with Marbury. And I continue to cringe for that sad franchise. Wonder if Dolan will ever sell…

While I’m at it, it’s nice to see them getting some good guard play from Jeremy Lin. He’s a decent fit for D’Antoni’s style, and I always liked what I saw of him when he got tiny bits of time off the bench at Golden State. Hope he continues to contribute and becomes a viable PG in the league.

time for him to start putting up 20+ a game. Nene needs to step up (as long as he is healthy) and earn that big contract as well. STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
