Nuggets at Clippers recap: Lineup blunders cost the Nuggets again

Al Harrington "tries" to play defense against Blake Griffin

In what is beginning to be a broken record from me, a perplexing, confusing, confounding lineup the last five minutes of the fourth quarter doom the Nuggets to a loss. A loss in a game they had every right to win short-handed.

Nuggets lose to the Clippers 103-95

Star-divide

3-13 shooting, 0-6 on three-point shots, 5-10 at the free throw line and 11 points. Came in with five minutes left in the third quarter ... and never came out.

This, ladies and gentleman is the stat line of one Al Harrington. Sigh. I don't know what to say about this - wait - yes I do. I'm going to be a succinct and to the point as I can, so no one can mistake what I'm saying. Are you ready for this? It may come as a shock to you...

George Karl has ridden Al Harrington so much that he has NOTHING left in the tank. George Karl has ridden Al Harrington so much that he can't even shoot free throws anymore. George Karl has ridden Al Harrington so much that he can no longer get an important rebound or get enough lift to shoot a wide-open three-point shot. It's George Karl who insists on a clearly gassed Al Harrington to guard Blake Griffin. For these reasons I cannot in good conscience blame this loss entirely on Big Al. Not this time.

It's becoming a sad refrain that our coaching staff cannot stay appropriately with a hot hand. Or even RECOGNIZE when someone is having a good night. Jordan Hamilton was having a good night (18 points 7 rebounds). He was hitting open three's, posterizing Reggie Evans, and playing the best basketball of his rookie career. And yet, with 6 minutes left in the fourth quarter, after hitting a nice go-ahead three ... Hamilton was pulled. He was not re-inserted until one minute left in the fourth quarter with the Nuggets down 7 points. Meanwhile Al was chucking up three point shots like he was a professional shot-put thrower. It was, in a word, infuriating.

The frustration is made even worse by the fact that the Nuggets, by and large, should have been blown out in this game. Three of the starting five were gone due to injury (Danilo Gallinari, Nene Hilario, Ty Lawson) plus a key bench player (Rudy Fernandez). Lets face it. The Clippers didn't exactly light the world on fire in the fourth quarter. It was almost like they were trying to hand the Nuggets the game with missed shot after missed shot. Chris Paul was dominant (36 points 9 assists) and Blake Griffin had his usual dunks and flops (27 points 12 rebounds). Meanwhile, because the Nuggets insisted on going small ... again ... DeAndre Jordan had himself a field day (10 points 16 rebounds and 3 blocks).

Yet - AND YET - the Nuggets could have and probably SHOULD have won this game. Another unforgivable sequence occurred when Kenneth Faried (who had 12 points and 9 rebounds) was quickly pulled while the Nuggets needed an important rebound on an attempted free throw by Blake Griffin with a minute left. Big Al and Corey Brewer knocked themselves off the ball and Jordan came in for the clean up slam. Putting the game essentially away.

What started out as a feel-good game ended up with the same frustration we've been having with the coaching staff, specifically George Karl, all year. No feel for the flow of the game. No ability to ride the hot hand. Most disturbing is the over-relying on aging veterans like Big Al and Andre Miller (who had a pedestrian 8 points and 8 assists) to the exclusion of younger players. It's becoming a very sad refrain in what may be shaping up to the worst stretch of coaching in George Karl's career.

Nuggets of Wisdom

If you are asking for a solution to this issue. I can honestly say I don't know. Coach Karl keeps making the same mistakes over and over and over again. What's funny is, if I wasn't so happy about the Nuggets putting forth a gutty and TREMENDOUS effort with so many injured players out, I probably could have seen the ending coming. That is the most disappointing aspect of this game. The players DESERVED to win this. After putting in a lineup that nine times out of ten will get outrebounded because of sheer size difference alone, Karl had the audacity in his post game press conference to say that "if we had rebounded better we could have run". That should insult the intelligence of every Nuggets fan out there.

Yes, Chris Paul ate them up, and Timofey Mozgov played one of his worst games in recent memory. Yes, these things are true ... BUT the game was there for the taking. The larger press corp in Denver can't see the frustration building because they often don't challenge Karl on his lineups. It's there folks. It's there and real. You feel bad for a team that worked it's butt off to win a game only to be let down by intransigence by the coaching staff. It is just frustrating.

I'm not in the "fire George Karl" crowd. I think, at heart he is a good coach. However, he has lost his way. It's time to start putting some real pressure on George to answer the question we have all been asking for the last month and a half...

"Why did you do that Coach?"

The lineup to end should have been

Hamilton
Faried
KK
Afflalo
Miller

I love Al as a person and as a leader and think he is valuable to the team, but much like the Birdman his value is a bell curve which peaks at 15-20 mins. Dont want to see the law of diminishing returns play out. The minnesota game was more of an anomaly. He is capable of big games, but when you realize he is taking bad shots and not making them, take him out. He doesn’t impact the game on the defensive or rebounding end.

by Bigdorph on Feb 23, 2012 12:36 AM MST up reply actions

agreed, good lineup

Al, who started off year as a consistent spark is now an erratic offensive player, something that really describes him over his career.

That wouldnt be that bad if he was an Afflalo type or Gallo type who can contribute in other aspects. He’s not.

Because, don't you know

that if you bench a vet in favor of a youngin you lose the locker room? Apparently in Karl’s head anyways. I have no problem with him finishing the game with Al, but pull him out early in the 4th and give the man some rest then for the stretch run. Don’t play him to the point of exhaustion. Goodness Karl. And why on earth would you pull Hamilton???

How active do you think we'll be at the trading deadline?

Sandy Clough was bringing up some interesting stuff about trading Nene.

by Larry Cunningham on Feb 23, 2012 12:27 AM MST reply actions

they all are assets, Chandler will be another one. If Hamilton and/or Faried turns into a stud

then you trade Nene and/or AA. Right now the guys I see that are expendable are Rudy, one of the bigs and Andre, also maybe Al

by Bigdorph on Feb 23, 2012 12:32 AM MST up reply actions

Where is the Nene talk coming from?

What big men 4.5/5’s in the league do you take over him? I am loving Faried and his development but he is a couple years from being a stud. I like Mozgov and Koufos but they are both “limited effectiveness” big men (like 8-12 points and 6-10 rebounds). There aren’t a lot of legitimately good 5s in the league and so I don’t see who we would give Nene for. I think it should only be a proven player – not potential – we have plenty of that to work with.

You do know that your description of limited effectiveness

just about describes Nene, 12+ ppg and 7rpg. We just get it a lot cheaper with Moz and KK and KK is young enough to have some real upside.

Trading Al and Bird makes sense

If Denver is unsure on being able to sign Chandler. Could have a decent amount of cap space available to bring in another piece.

by nugzin2040 on Feb 23, 2012 1:52 AM MST up reply actions

TOTALLY AGREE..NASH BABY!

Andre can not hit a 3 and Bird has lost his legs. Both their contracts equate to Steve Nash’s. I brought this up a few weeks ago and now I believe it will benefit all players involved. Attaining Nash will make Faried and the the other young guys mature greater just because of that aspect of having Steve. Not to mention some star power, so hopefully Kim Jong Stern can give the Nuggets some credit.

Thats right all up in your chest!!!!

by Viruth Cheng on Feb 23, 2012 10:43 AM MST up reply actions

i was thinking about Nash last week as well

and now with Ty latest injury, it doesn’t seem like his ankles are durable enough this year to be a full time starting PG. He’s played a full season considering his time overseas during the lockout, and the All-Star break coming up won’t be enough for him to be healthy down the stretch, plus he seems injury prone in the ankles anyway. this is moot point though unless Coach Karl would get away from playing Ty and Nash together and burn both of them out with only J. Stone available as a back up. We would need to bring in a 3rd PG anyway.

Nene holds serious value believe it or not

teams would line up for the guy. I mean Roy Hibbert is getting a max this summer. Javale McGee is getting paid too. Nene has value. We need to trade him for someone with a different mindset.

by Monkfish on Feb 23, 2012 12:34 AM MST up reply actions

The issue is if we trade Nene we have no low post threat,

which means we need to trade Nene for a low post threat which I doubt a team will trade a lowpost threat for a low post threat. Nene is frustrating because we see his talent. However you have to understand the guy can score down low, draw double teams, pass out of those double teams and play really solid underrated D. I dont think trading him is the answer.

Man the Spurs are gonna kill us tomorrow.

And GK will be thoroughly out coached by areal coach.
Pop went to school in Colorado…I keep dreaming we had him. We would have had a ship in ‘09 and may have won in 2010 too. Pop would have rested KMart instead of you know riding him till his knees burst at the seem.
At least ham had a good game. Looks like we have a future JR or better if I can admit that.
I would like to have Chandler, and hopefully he can take more of Harrington’s minutes and give the old man some rest which Karl won’t do in his right mind.
Seriously we need someone to pressure Karl on those lineups…..Andrew? Anyone

I’d just as soon see all the injured Nugs take another night off, give more time to Hamilton, Faried, etc.

Why you'd pull Faried

Who clearly frustrates Griffin and who is able to hang with him athletically and then have Harrington guard Griffin, only to give him and play unsound defense is beyond me.

Also, Karl is so focused on running that he fails to see the second most important factor correlated with winning – rebounding. He puts together these lineups that are good in theory, but can’t rebound at all. So we’ll play good defense and then give up 3 offensive boards.

but failed to see why that was the case. The Clips have one of the best rebounding teams, so why would you go centerless with Al at the PF?…then complain about rebounding. Look at the man in the mirror Karl, and then please ask him to change his ways…

GK needs to be a little quicker on reading the game

We had a great run in the 4th quarter where they missed like 7 straight shots. We were getting stops, we just weren’t scoring. Then we stayed with that same line-up and flipped it around and went on our own 0-10 type drought.

Yes, we need to keep the defense going and we had that, but if you are going to count on someone to finish the game then make sure they have their legs under them for that last 5 minutes.

I think he’s got a great future – he takes good shots, he’s aggressive and he’s a good 3 point shooter. The way to have a really good team is get a bunch of guys who do multiple things well and he’s he does more than one thing well (passes + rebounds).

Actually, me too

Its hard to judge defense because there are few good measures, the one extant arent always good ones, much of defense depnds on effort and team synchronicity

I still hear Gallo being slammed for his defense for no apparent reason (Sam Mitchell, NBA TV was latest culprit)

I would guess Rudy is headier than JHam but JHam has an awful lot of physical ability from what I saw. Could help on defense.

Mozgov

Finally, Mozgov just isn’t athletic enough to play solid minutes in the NBA. His teammates don’t trust him running the lane because he can barely catch the ball. He fumbles away so many shots that would be easy layups for most guys. His help defense is as bad as I’ve ever seen in my life.

There were so many times where he was late on help D, or in one sequence, where he went to help Big Al, but instead of using the sideline to help trap the guy, he came from the baseline, Al was expecting the D to come from the paint, and so they drove right past Al.

So. Stupid.

I'm having problems with Moz also,

I think KK bring just about everything Moz does with more energy and a willingness to mix it up a it more. If Moz ever developed a bit of K-Mart’s attitude and started knocking some guys out of the lane I would be OK with him playing 40 min.

by NugzD on Feb 23, 2012 7:39 AM MST up reply actions

I keep remembering back to his play in the last couple of games before

he sprained his ankle, and he looked completely different. Since he’s come back, he looks like he did at the beginning of the year – just as you described. I think the time away set him back a lot. Plus, I don’t think the ankle is fully healed. There were a couple of times last night, most notably on the tip-in oop, where he came down and grimaced in pain, and then limped slightly as he went up the floor. I don’t know for sure that he’s still hurting, but my subjective observations say that he is.

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

yes I recall too and have seen same

Moz looks like a totally different player once he gets some consistent minutes. Unfortunately, every time he suffers an injury, he seems to start from 0.

But I see a player that has a ceiling thats quite high. Contrast this to KK who often outplays Moz but IMO has hit his ceiling.

physically limited but pretty smart for having relatively little experience

With Moz, he has so many fixable problems that I think there is a lot of upside. Of course you have to believe that he’s fixable (dumb fouls, brick hands, etc)

Contrast that to KK who has way more polish than Moz so what exactly is KK to improve on. He’s serviceable today and will be so tomorrow.

He still is so tricky and smart, he can still play but he isn’t going to blaze up the court, also he is becoming a liability on defense. He loves to help but will be caught in the paint helping and leaving his man wide open. as he expects someone else to rotate over he is in no man’s land.

Dre's outside shot

This issue has plagued the Nuggets during Andre’s first stint with the Nuggets when Karl was hired. Teams know that Karl loves drives to the basket and then kick out. But when both your PG’s can’t hit an outside shot to save their lives. It defeats the purpose because teams are packing the paint again and double teaming post players. The spacing is AWFUL because of the lack of outside shooting. I think the Dre experiment is cool but he doesn’t want to be am off the bench player. Lets move Bird and Andre for Steve Nash..STAT

Thats right all up in your chest!!!!

Good writeup Jeff

Karl needs to be called out on this stuff. You cant run if you cant rebound. You cant rebound if you dont play any rebounders. Sending Faried out there alone vs Griffin and Jordan just isnt enough. Sending tired Harrington and Brewer to secure rebounds is just ignorant. Playing Harrington the whole fourth quarter should never happen. Not to mention half the third as well. So frustrating. So much to say, but most of it has already been said here. Other than this. We have the most stubborn, arrogant, frustrating coach in the league.

just watched my Tivo'd game

I think the most encouraging things take away from this game are

1:Hammer Time! – Jordan Hamilton showed why he was considered as high in the draft as top 15 or higher.

2. Faried! Once again jumped and scrounged for the ball, I love his energy and know he’ll keep it up.

3. Team Defense: its what kept us in the game and, up until we stopped scoring, allowed us to nearly steal this one.

On a side note I was loving Brewer / Miller connecting on lobs. The Boats Announcers said that Miller is THE BEST LOB PASSER OF ALL TIME! can’t say I disagree them.

Hope we can heal up soon.

It’s so damn frustrating to watch this Nuggets team be positioned late to win basketball games, only to have it pissed away by coaching decisions.

This site is becoming pretty bad

At this point there almost no good reporting or intelligent discussion.
It is just about blaming GK.

Did anyone notice that Nuggets were playing without 3 starters and still stayed competitive pretty much until the very end. Who takes credit for that? Or I see… That’s all because nuggets players are playing well in spite of GK. Oh hypocrisy…

Yes closing the games has been pretty sore point. But to win the games someone needs to score points, and who other then Al Harrington is currently available? I mean with the best defense in the world CP3 and Griffin are still going to get points or get to the line.

I still enjoy how Nuggets play and they should get better when starters return. I hope you guys do the same. Or let’s just rename this site to DenverWiners.com and be done with it.

Understand your points

But even with a healthy lineup, he went with Rudy over Gallo, or AAA over Gallo during Gallo’s “poor” shooting nights. That is absurd. Gallo needs to be on the floor regardless because he changes the defense and is our best scorer. Rudy was 0-4 the game he played instead of Gallo. It’s decisions like that, with a full roster, that makes me mad. I complain about GK because among other things, he is standing in the way of a real playoff run. We can trade for or draft other players, but we cannot change the coach (unless he’s fired). That’s why it’s so frustrating.

the idea that there are bigger reasons or our losses than injuries is just off target. Maybe Karl is doing some good things to keep team as competitive as it can be.

I agree.....

GK and staff deserves credit for developing these rooks with NO training camp and NO practice time on a team with playoff expectations and the pressure that every single game is WINNABLE.

We don’t lose every game because of GK. That is the easy way out. I sure hope the players aren’t using it, at least they seem to be buying in and putting forth a tremendous effort.

Closing games is where this team needs to improve. They know it, we know it. Everyone knows it. You can crush a coach for every close game if you want to. You can crush Al for this game.

I know a lot of you guys have soured on GK and the only way he will win back you respect is by winning a title.

But let the boys vent. Frustration has to be worked out somewhere :-)

As 24 years as a coach with great teams, yeah, that’s exactly what he needs to do. Perhaps the reason some of us are mad is because he gets way more adulation and respect than he deserves – that guy can’t win big games.

Everyone here is passionate fans and they can get riled up.

Everyone is aware that the team is decimated with injuries but there was some errors in lineup decisions. Al was having a bad night and in crunch time, 3 plays were called that ended up with Al bricking 3s badly. No one would have been angry if the nuggets lost the same way with GK subbing to find someone who could score and maybe getting a big in there for a rebound.

This is still pretty much a fan site and you have to take the good with the bad. Like people suggesting crazy trades or picking up any and all free agents. I remember a couple years ago everyone clamoring for Marc Gasol. Imagine him in a GK system? He would never get to one side of the court.

Brewer makes a layup on a 3 on 1 fast break and this is a whole different game. Maybe Karl is playing Al cause he’s the only real scoring threat the Nuggs have right now? I’d like to see half of these “desk jockeys” coach one minute in the NBA let alone a whole game.

On another note, glad we aren’t depending on Kmart any more.

Who are you referring to when you say “a bunch of desk jockeys talking tough behind a computer screen”? To Jeff and myself? We’ve met with Karl face-to-face. It’s not like Jeff is on here screaming to have the coach fired. Did you read his article? He’s simply being critical of the rotation patter from the game and voicing concern over rotation patterns. Jeff even says Karl is a good coach and that he’s not on the “fire” him train.

It’s 100% fair to question rotation patterns in a game. I’ll defend Jeff’s right to discuss that all day. I was frustrated with it as well.

We enjoy having your voice here. There’s a lot more going on with the site from the three writers than “bitch fests”. There is “actual material”, but if you choose not to notice it or read it, that’s okay too.

Come on Zach you know that's not fair

Coaches get shitcanned all the time, Mike Shanahan was one of the most celebrated coaches in the NFL and Denver fired him after a few year of mediocrity. Shanahan thought he was untouchable and comfortable resting on his laurels.

Masai has given his a team of his dreams, it’s a Ferrari and he’s driving it like a Honda Civic. He’s not maximizing the potential, sticking with AL and Dre when they’ve played so long when the younger more energenic rookies were kicking ass is just not excusable. Now we got an even more tired ass Al and Dre tonight to play against the Spurs. It’s lazy coaching and it’s sabotaging the team.

Zachm, I honestly get where you're coming from

The appeal to authority can be a valid argument. But with that perspective, you could never criticize any professional sports coach. And I’m sorry, but sometimes they fuck up, like anyone else.

No one is saying they would be a better basketball coach than Karl (although I really truly think that there are games where I could do a better job with rotations, because I think he has irrational biases that get in the way of his undeniable basketball knowledge). But that is not the standard we are judging GK by-that would be pointless. We are judging him by the standard that he gets paid millions of dollars to be better than most other coaches, and many of us think he is failing at that.

And I’m not 100% sure, but I really really doubt that I or much anybody else here would change their mind about last night’s coaching performance if we were privy to every practice. I think those of us that watch almost every game have a pretty good sense of who these guys are. I guess it’s just about having some trust in your own judgment. Trust me, I give appropriate consideration to Karl’s superior basketball knowledge when I criticize him, but you shouldn’t let that completely override what you’re thinking and seeing.

Too bad, Zachm219

There’s plenty of nonsense on a fan site, but so many of the complaints here about Karl’s coaching are 100% percent legit, based as they are on informed fans’ opinions, which have been formed over many years of serious study of the game. Many of the complaints are also quite modulated and moderate, as are Jeff’s in this very game recap.

If you want to take flight, that’s your prerogative. But your complaint is way off base.

by stiffy on Feb 23, 2012 8:44 AM MST reply actions

I cannot criticize Karl for last nights game

because the wind ruined my reception and I only saw bits and pieces of the game. At one point in the first half, I saw griffin laying on the floor, not sure what caused it. I saw the nuggets up 36-33 at one point, then down 46-36, so I think they allowed a 13-0 run. I saw the guy Miller was attempting to guard making a lot of threes. Griffin had a dunk where he jumped from about the three point line and Marlowe said they should have fouled him instead of giving up the dunk. I saw they were close throughout the game. Then at the end, Clippers pulled away.

Regarding the guy posting the porn and making new accounts to keep posting the porn, some of the other sites have a 24 hour waiting period to post. Might help with this type of stuff in the future. I didn’t see it though, and free porn is free porn.

Something the nuggets desperately need. We also need a shooter, and rebounding could improve if J-ham replaced rudy. Trade rudy+ bird to minny for ridnour and a 2nd. Then move andre in a separate deal ideally with a 1st rounder coming back.

some of you Coach Karl apologists act like you're on the Nuggets payroll or something

How can you not see that some of his decisions in losses this year are at least 25% of the reason for those losses? I have not advocated for his firing but, but his role as an in game coach should be diminished. His yes men assistants do much of the coaching in game unless its an end of qtr, half, or game situation when a play needs to be drawn up. Coach Karl rarely gets up and defend his players when bad ref calls occur, and leaves them out to dry to whine to the refs directly, his substitution patters are untimely and he seems slow to recognize when certain players are off their game or need rest, but pulls guys at the wrong time or in the wrong situation. Coach Karl can stay with he organization, run practices, be more involved in player development, but needs to step aside in the in game coaching role. Bring in a Flip Saunders or some veteran head coach, who would also appreciate someone like Coach Karl in an advisory role but not making crucial in game decisions.

Well, the most comforting thing to me...

Is that last night further reinforced my feeling that we are in extremely good hands with Masai and Josh at the helm. Every player that they have brought in have been very solid. I felt like Hamilton was the only question mark for me, and he showed that he can get hot and light it up. It can be hard to find true impact players after the first 20 picks in the draft, and it looks like they might have drafted 2. And signed a very solid undrafted rookie. Let alone getting two of our best bench players for virtually nothing. And not even mentioning the melo trade. I don’t see how Masai doesn’t win exec of the year. It’s pretty obvious that they both have a great I for talent.

Move Dre and Bird for Nash...

Dre doesn’t like coming off the bench and Bird wants playing time. Chandler can be added to sweeten the deal too to add more outside shooter like might I say Channing Frye…But Nash and Frye will help alleviate other teams packing the paint. Nuggets need better spacing and consistant outside shooting. C’mon Masai I know you can see this….

Thats right all up in your chest!!!!

I dont like Karl as coach but

I have to admit that he makes 100s of decisions every game and it is easy to harp on 3 or 4 that seem like bad ones.

Coaches are always easy targets.

By contrast, the praise he was getting after trade last year was also over the top positive. I guess he did some coaching but we had a complete, deep, talented team of motivated veteran players.

But what all that suggests to me is not that Karl is a bad coach, or a goood, coach but an average coach.

Average coaches are the easiest to alternately praise and deride because their worth is, well, not that obvious.

They showed an interview last night w/ Karl on Altitude

in which he basically stated that the team has done a great job but he doesn’t feel like he’s brought much to the table and only gave himself credit for maybe 3 or 4 wins.

That said, he is realizing that he’s not doing the best job coaching. And the assistants must be some pretty passive dudes to not have the courage to step up behind Karls ear and mention “hey, Al looks beat, maybe we should pull him” or something like that… Everyone in the world can see this, a coach DEFINITELY should be able to. I have gained tremendous respect for Al Harrington over the past month.

saw a clip of that

which makes me even more perplexed that the same night he’s in a tight situation and made the decisions he did. His assistants are young and seem to be yes men,

"1-2-3...HARD WORK!"

Oh, and JHam has to have a spot in the rotation

forget about the outside shooting efficiency, his form and athleticism can be banked on for a long time.

Same complaints as Jeff, and I had them during the game

I couldn’t believe my eyes during crunch time. I was yelling at my gal pal, “Harrington can’t hit a shot; he’s too tired to be out there; where the fuck is Hamilton? He’s had the hot hand!”

And then, “Oh my god, there’s nobody to get the rebound in the game!” Where was Koufos? Where was Faried?

So sad.

Nuggets defense was excellent early on in this game

Just in case people think we complainers can’t see the good things, I was blown away by the Nuggets’ crisp, effective defensive rotations in the first half.

And Harrington was hustling his ass off on defense too.

Say it again – I have a new-found level of respect for Big Al.

And he was doing what he could on Durant the other night, too,

slapping at the ball early in possessions, and trying like hell to otherwise disrupt the guy’s game. But these are extremely tough assignments, needless to say. Can’t blame Al for much of anything, as he has stepped up all aspects of his game this season. But he cannot be who he is not.

King George Karl

George Karl will be in Denver for as long as he wants because “Governer” Kronke and U.M. the GM are in awe of his greatness. Karl’s shadow is cast a heck of a lot longer than these two Admin newby’s. Karl has free reign to run this 9th place team into the ground even further with his short bench (which in turn tires them to no end) and rediculous rotation; the Nuggets are screwed.
He doesn’t want a “superstar” because not one he has ever coached can stand him. Who is the egomaniac? The “superstars” who dislike him, or Karl himself?

George karl is king of mediocrity

On one hand, he is not very bad… he keeps the team decent.. when we lose him, we are going to be very bad for a short term (unless the fired coach effect gives us one great year)…

but with George, I do not ever foresee us going deep in the playoff

dear masai,

I am sure you have better things to do, than watch these past few Nuggets games or read this blog. But as a lifelong Nuggets fan, I want you to know that i will never spend another dollar on tickets or merchandise related to the Nuggets for as long as Karl remains coach. Perhaps if you won’t listen to most people on here, you will start to understand the word, Boycott!!! Karl has lost it. He has no feel for the flow of games, continues to blame players for his piss poor line-ups, and is no longer relevant in the world of coaching. On behalf of the majority of fans on this site and in Nugget nation, FIRE KARL NOW!!!!!!!!!

coaching gaffs

it seems that as long as the Nuggets continue to make the playoffs then karl is safe! he seems untouchable because no hard questions are ever lobbed at him regarding his “going small” ball when we need rebounds. I am not nor have I ever been a big Karl fan—he can win many games but never the big one! He is getting out-coached by these younger coaches and refuses to make changes.
Continuing to do the same things hoping for a different outcome is the definition of insanity!

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
