George Karl: New York Knicks will struggle to make it out of the first round
In an interview with ESPN radio, Nuggets coach George Karl said that the Knicks will struggle to make it out of the first round of the playoffs. Saying in-part that the Knicks lack of practice time due to the condensed season and the emergence of Jeremy Lin will be difficult. Also, they most likely won't finish out of the bottom half of the draw.
Context is important here, and the full interview would need to be heard to see if this was an honest critique or a thinly veiled shot at Carmelo Anthony. At this point I think George should be given benefit of the doubt until the full interview is heard.
What do you think Stiffs?

Why is he talking about the Knicks!

he should just concentrate on the Nuggets and end of game coaching…period…Knicks DO NOT matter…
Just answer correctly and say its great to see the Knicks do well with Lin, and that he is excited for them…done. or go with the no comment response

I think he likes listening to himself talk
Now I’m trying to remember, did he ever do a stint as a broadcaster in between coaching jobs?
Anyway, I’m in full agreement with the “For fuck’s sake, just shut up, George” sentiment.

just looked it up
GK was part of the NBA on ESPN crew in ‘03-’04, I guess that was just before becoming coach of the Nuggets. So he likes all the gabbing and whatnot. I guess.

This
The constant digs on Melo and the Knicks make him seem petty and childish. Not to mention a little crazy, like a jilted spouse or something.

I hate to say this
But the Knicks look a helluva lot better than the Nuggets in the potential department, and Carmelo and JR will probably see a level of success they weren’t able to see in Denver. Will alot of it be due to Lin? Sure, just like alot was due to Chauncey that one season. Let it go, Karl. We know you don’t like or respect these guys. I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

These seem like reasonable statements
"The thing I don’t like about the situation is all this stuff is happening with very little practice time,’ Karl said. ‘So you’re kind of meshing different personalities and different people on the court, and you’re going to have to do it on the job, in the game situation, and that’s how you’re going to have to do it. That’s not the easiest thing to do from a coaching standpoint. I don’t think they’re going to get out of the bottom half of the draw, so I think they’re going to draw one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference (in the playoffs). I’ll be honest with you, I think it’s going to be very difficult for them this year to put the pieces together to figure out how to beat one of those top three or four teams.’"

Karl is right
All of the top teams in the East are going to be tough for New York. I mean, they aren’t going to be beating the Pacers or the 76ers, let alone the Heat and the Bulls.
Still, he shouldn’t talk about New York, if for no other reason than people can read all sorts of shit into it.
Ugh.
Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?
I tend to agree that George needs to just say "no comment" or
compliment Jeremy Lin or something. When George talks about anything Melo related he’s starting to come across looking bitter and petty. Let it go George.

he probably wouldn't have said had they still had to play NY
So convenient for him to talk about it now. Coach Karl, please just concentrate on your team and what you and your staff need to do to get through this rash of injuries and back to some consistency in terms of rotations, and figure out how to run some plays in the halfcourt when the running game isn’t working. Some layup drills, FT’s and 15ft or less shooting practice would be nice too since your team has struggled in those areas all year. Concentrate on getting YOUR team in a decent playoff seed and past the first round, since you have a short history of leading teams there yourself. SHHHHH!

Good for Karl
Speaking your mind is something every American has the right to do… say whatever the hell you want GK! I’m glad he’s at least candid, as opposed to the stale canned waste of time interviews most players and coaches give.
canned
I wish thats how we could describe George Karl.

Quick disclaimer: I am always one of the first to criticize Karl for some of his mind-boggling coaching strategies
But I respect what GK said. If you read the quote, the way he is describing the Knicks this year (new personalities, learning on-the-go during the season) sounds like he is making the comparison to the Nuggets at the end of last year. He’s not saying they will never make out of the first round. He’s saying this year, because of the turmoil of trying to gain chemistry during the season, they will struggle. There’s nothing wrong with what he’s saying.
I DO wish he would spend some time setting up a half-court offense, but it’s not like that was being sacrificed while he had this interview. He spoke his mind actually had something substantial to say. I can’t knock that.
George is right
The Knicks aren’t likely to gain enough ground in 33 games to get home court and I don’t see them getting out of the first. They don’t play defense, their pg turns the ball over way too much. Too many shooters, only one ball. Melo can’t get out of the first round etc. etc. etc.

He is determined to keep talking until he gets himself in real trouble.
I am starting to think his mouth will get him fired before his coaching. This isn’t trouble, but why even comment?

yeah he can speak his mind if he wants
but it just makes him look like a salty baby.
i understand the relief of having melo-drama done with last season. i got no problems saying its a relief for the team to be able to move on now and now have to worry about that. but melo’s gone now, not even in our conference. no need to bad mouth him or whatever, esp when youre a coch.
hastings is kinda irritating too. hes such a nuthugger when it comes to nuggs, but the minute they leave hes trashtalking them.

He is not just a man on the street
Karl needs to remember who he is. He id the coach of the Denver Nuggets and therefore represents the team and the organization in an official role. I agree 100% with those who said he should have kept his opinion to himself and worried more about our team.
I would have like to see a statement like this “I won’t worry about them again this year unless we see them in the finals.”
