Feb. 21: Stiff List

Officials at the Nuggets vs. Timberwolves game: In a short time frame the Nuggets went from up 9 points, to trailing by 3 points largely due to strange and downright erroneous calls from officials. Included in their greatest hits? Corey Brewer getting blocked out into the first row and somehow getting a foul called on him. Andre Miller being ejected for arguing a call where he was pummeled by Martell Webster and drew an offensive foul. Also, Luke Ridnour falling on his face and somehow drawing a foul. Nice going refs.

George Karl's end of game coaching: In a very winnable game against the Thunder, your coach of the Nuggets decided to burn his two oldest players (Al Harrington and Andre Miller) from the 8 minute mark of the third quarter, through the end of the game. Leaving them dead legged for overtime. Also, not subbing in defensive rebounders for Durant's last couple shots of regulation was a bit of a blunder. Gotta get better coach!

Royce Young: Reading this article on CBSSports.com makes me wonder if good old Royce is secretly a Thunder fan ... oh wait. He also writes for Daily Thunder, the Oklahoma City Thunder's biggest blog. Go figure!! Listen Royce, dismissing that the Nuggets were down their two best players, and then using this game to prove a point about the Nuggets is a bit ... I dunno ... "salty". Don't you agree?

The "injured ankle leprechaun": What is the appropriate sacrifice we need to beseech this malevolent leprechaun who has cursed the Nuggets. Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo both injured their ankles on Monday night. In addition to Danilo Gallinari being out with a severe ankle sprain and Timofey Mozgov just coming back from one himself. Listen, if you need me to get a goat I will.

The month of February: Seriously? Can we be done with this month already? Time for March. Green beer and an incredibly easy Nuggets schedule. Can't get here soon enough.

one has to question the training staff

Are the nuggets in the best shape? they say that players get hurt when they are not in shape and yes you might say because of the type of off season its been but its seems in the past couple of years the injury bug has biten the nuggets more than other teams can you contribute that to us noting being in the best shape because of the teams work out programs???

by cfact on Feb 21, 2012 11:14 AM MST reply actions

i think it does because every injury but ty's last one where players just running around

i could see it if players where stepping on other players or ppl but there not they are just smiply running around and falling over for the most part

by cfact on Feb 21, 2012 11:35 AM MST up reply actions

Gallo did step on someone's foot, and Moz came down awkwardly from his layup.

Haven’t you ever rolled your ankle playing ball? It doesn’t necessarily happen just from coming down on someone’s foot, and it doesn’t have any correlation to fatigue. The only potentially fatigue-driven injury we’ve had is Rudy’s back.

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

But how does the Phoenix training staff do so well?

Training staff does affect whether a player works on ankle stability and balance. I do trust Steve Hess does this well, but still not a great job at it.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

I really have no idea what the training staff does.

What I do know is the ankle injuries are not a result of GK overplaying players. They are pretty standard injuries related to basketball.

This is true

I too wear the Adidas Superstar 2.0 and my ankles are always achy. But they were such a good price (45 bucks shipped on amazon) I don’t wanna upgrade by paying 3 times as much

My wife wanted to get me some basketball things for christmas including shoes and I told her to just get me a Nike store gift card.

I got Nike Fullcourt max 2. I used to wear RBK. They were very uncomfortable. These ones are perfect. Most Adidas basketBall shoes do not give proper ankle support. If I were to get Adidas they would be Howard’s series. Very high top.

The only thing I like better about RBK than Nike

is the insole. I have incredibly high arches, and RBK have much better arch support than Nike. Other than that, Nike outperform RBK in every way. Never had Adidas for basketball, but loved them for tennis

i think they amnesty perkins

his stats are down across the board and i’ve also heard that his defense is declining as well. wouldn’t be surprised to see okc draft or trade for a banger to replace him

by Kevin #3 on Feb 21, 2012 3:32 PM MST up reply actions

But how does that help them?

Amnestying Perkins gets him off the roster, but doesn’t help them with their budget. They have bird rights on both Harden and Ibaka, so the cap isn’t an issue. If they don’t have the money to pay Ibaka and Harden, they still won’t have the money if they Amnesty perkins.

Teams will only amnesty players who are either entirely useless like Eddie Curry, or when it frees up cap space to acquire another player, ala Chauncey Billups.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Feb 21, 2012 3:39 PM MST up reply actions

it clears enough cap space to sign ibaka and harden

to contracts that they will probably be offered by other teams. i think unless they amnesty perkins, they will lose one of them to free agency as someone will overpay for them whether that be as RFA or UFA.

by Kevin #3 on Feb 21, 2012 3:42 PM MST up reply actions

They don't need cap space to sign either of them

Cap space is irrelevant. They have bird rights.

Great list

I would argue teh officiating in the Memphis, OKC and Minny game. George Karls end of game coaching is always a nominee for the stiff list. Royce Young has no idea what hes talking about… ever… he s a biased opinionated and like you said “salty” individual when it comes to social media and voicing his opinion. For the ankles, maybe it has something to do with the teams equipment? I know certain players are sponsored by certain companies but i know not every NBA player has their own NBA shoe. So for the rest of the players who don’t have their custom shoe are they given shoes by the team? Do they buy them on their own? How does it work, because if every player is wearing teh same shoe, or same company then that could be a factor. February sucks in general. Its cold, there are midterms (3 this week =/) and a lot of teams are dealing with injuries. Can’t wait for March!

Good list, except in the ways it is wrong

by disagreeing with the list I posted yesterday!

On the Andre ejection, does anyone know what he did to get the second technical? I didn’t see it on Altitude.

I’m not a big fan of complaining about the ref’s. It is up to the players to adjust to the way the game is being ref’d. Maybe, just maybe, don’t body up the opposing pg fifty feet away from the basket. The proper thing to do with the refs is what the Lakers and Spurs do. Talk about them in the media, and talk to them in the games. Make sure your point is in their head when they are deciding to blow the whistle. If I was a coach, I’d game plan for the refs. Know their tendencies and make sure your players know what behavior to avoid. I would also have a point of emphasis about something illegal an opposing teams star player does, and I’d have a conversation about it with them just before the game starts. “Tim Duncan changes his pivot foot on every post up” or something like that, try to build in a few calls and get the refs looking at what I want them to look at. Complaining after the fact is useless.

Officiating last night was inexplicably horrible and mostly one-sided. One referee seemed to be embarrassed by it and gave us a few small make-up calls. But this wasn’t even against one of the league’s chosen ones. And we were at home. Honestly, I couldn’t help but wonder if the fix was on.

Stiff #7 - Lebron James
When he dines out at a fine steak house, LeBron James apparently likes apple martinis, his steak well done and he wants it cut up for him. Not my drink of choice but I can live with the apple martini. Getting your steak cut up for you is a little juvenile, but fine. However, the wannabe foodie in me must complain — to have a good piece of steak cooked until it is well done is a crime against nature and the animal that gave its life for your meal. Medium at most. AL was worn out last night, I think so was Andre in OT against OKC. Karl is too crazy in overusing his two veterans.
"I was tired (Monday night). I’m not going to lie," said Harrington, who turned 32 on Feb. 17. "I wanted to come out of the game a couple times. I’ve said it multiple times on the blog, but I’ll say it here: I hate the way OKC got a team. Hate it. During the whole process I was cringing. It’s like in Unfaithful where Diane Lane cheats on Richard Gere. The whole time you’re going, “No, no, no. Don’t do that. He’s a good guy!” but then Diane Lane’s clothes start flying off and you’re like, “Ok. I’ll watch.”

not a great film, but a very nice one. And yes, for those of you unlucky enough not to have been there, Tuscany really is full of places like that. Come over Cat, in Sept for the grape harvest, in Oct to seek wild mushroons and chestnuts or late Nov to taste the newly-pressed olive oil.

Paris and the Greek islands are like that for me.

I loved Rome, and especially all the history, but I don’t enjoy the food enough or the police officers with machine guns on every corner. Everyone always talks about the food in Paris, and you really don’t understand it until you have been. In the U.S. we’ll make a crepe and slather it in sugar and jelly, and it will taste like sugar and jelly. In Paris, they’ll make a crepe, simple as can be, and it is soooo much better. Just a plain crepe.

I dunno what's that supposed to prove

but what I do know is Young’s logic is, if a team losses to OKC the completely suck, and if they beat OKC they’re the greatest team in the world. He shouldn’t be giving his opinion of the nba, since he doesn’t have a professional opinion. It’s one sided to okc, and that’s all there is to it.

Pop does it against mid-upper level teams. I think he does it also for psychological reasons.

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

by Russscot on Feb 22, 2012 8:20 AM MST up reply actions

This year, several reasons

1) G.K. has never done that
2) Right now, they are playing anyone with a pulse due to injuries
3) They are 4-10 while the spurs have won something like 12 in a row.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Feb 22, 2012 8:47 AM MST up reply actions

One more reason...

Pop sat two players (TD and Parker) who have been in his system for years, know what is expected of them, and Pop knows what he’s going to get from them. Karl has a team that – outside of Nene, Bird, and to some extent ‘Dre – he’s still learning and they are still learning him.

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

by Russscot on Feb 22, 2012 8:52 AM MST up reply actions

Would really suck if the Spurs just giving up this particular game affects playoff seeding

Especially for the Nuggets. This is the NBA’s problem though with the schedule they set up, and we’ve seen enough teams intentionally sit big name starters, which is also unfair to fans who bought tickets to see those guys play. They need to do away with back to backs period beginning next year and play less games overall.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
