Nuggets at Grizzlies recap: Nuggets locate their spine in loss

Although this game for most observers may go down as a miraculous put back from a Rudy Gay miss by the Grizzlies' Dante Cunningham. The Nuggets may have found something more important. Their collective spine.

Nuggets lose 103-102 in Memphis.

Star-divide

With about 10 minutes left in the third quarter the Nuggets were down by 23 points and were playing like they were dead men walking. A funny thing happened though. Corey Brewer , who hadn't scored the entire first half starting hitting three-point shots like he was was standing at the Pop-a-Shot at Dave & Busters, he finished with 26 points ... all in the second half. Three consecutive three's later and the Nuggets were suddenly within 14 points.

The rest was - well - almost history.

They key, along with Brewer was the lineup of Chris Andersen and Kenneth Faried in the Nuggets' front court. The energy they provided (going after every rebound, intimidating attempted lay-ups, getting inside) was contagious for the rest of the team. Ty Lawson was suddenly playing better. Andre Miller was suddenly playing with more fire. Even Rudy Fernandez, who had a bad game overall, was going for steals and pushing the Grizzlies back court.

Birdman, who most likely learned he was on the trading block today, came in and continued his recent good play. While his 7 points and 7 rebounds stat line doesn't leap out at you ... one can see if they watched the game that Bird was flying everywhere, attempting to block every lay-up and being the Birdman of old. While Marc Gasol did have a bit of his way with him, Gasol actually had far less points and assists with Bird guarding him than he did before. Gasol finished with 16 points, 10 of which were in the first half.

Manimal rewarded Coach George Karl and his sudden faith in him by scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He was everywhere. Going after every offensive rebound and looking to score. Which is a change from what we have seen in the past from him. This energy was felt by everyone and the Nuggets fed off that. With Faried and Bird in there the Nuggets cut a 10 fourth quarter deficit down and even took the lead a couple times. It was great to see.

Unfortunately, with the great news about Faried comes the bad news. Dante Cunningham was Faried's man ... and Manimal didn't adequately block him out on that final, ill-fated, shot attempt by Rudy Gay. Cunningham leaped in the air and tipped the ball in with 0.2 seconds remaining. Sealing the Nuggets' fate in this game. One hopes that Manimal will learn from this mistake, and take the positives from this game and hold his head high. He proved tonight he has a bright future in this league and his minutes tonight show this.

Ty Lawson also located his spine. He was driving the lane ... even when the lane was stacked and GASP, good things happened! Yay! THAT, my friends is the kind of Ty we need in every single game. PERIOD. No more cajoling, no more prodding, none of that. Every game Ty needs to play like he did all night with driving the lane and creating. Having a stat line of 18 points and 6 assists is not bad in any way. Keep it up Ty and I will stop riding you. Miller also had himself a good game. He finished with 13 points and 9 assists and looked interested again, as opposed to the last several games.

Timofey Mozgov is back. Well, he WAS back. After putting in some good minutes, Moz looked like he tweaked his left ankle again and had to leave the game. It looked like he was able to come back in (if needed), but I'm sure every Nuggets fan held their collective breath when they saw that re-injury. Moz played some good defense, but looked a little rusty on offense. That will only improve I believe.

Nuggets of Wisdom

Now THAT is more like it folks. A spirited effort all around by the Nuggets in the second half. While an entire game with that kind of energy would be nice, it seemed like the Nuggets quite figuratively flipped the switch and turned it in to hyper-drive. Starting with Brewers threes, and ending with an unfortunate tip-in. I'm less concerned about the final result than I am encouraged about the energy and the general vibe the team put out in the second half. It was SO much better. Like a giant weight had been lifted and the sunshine came through the clouds.

We all now know how important Danilo Gallinari is to this team. Yet, with spirited efforts like tonight, the Nuggets can make up for Gallo's absence by giving constant effort and energy. They need this. So while there are those who are waiting for Wilson Chandler to save the day ... maybe, just maybe, the spark the Nuggets needed was lit in the second half of tonight's game? I saw a change tonight. George Karl finally trusted a young player and didn't re insert Al Harrington (happy birthday Al but...wow you played terrible tonight) when the chips were down. These are the things that will help this team going forward more than anyone knows.

There's no such thing as a good loss, but damn this feels like one.

GO NUGGETS!!

Congrats!!!

Also, I was encouraged by the second half effort tonight. It was good to see our team not lay down like a tipped cow after they were down 23. With that being said, if we had played with the same heart, desire, and passion in the first half, the outcome most likely would have been different. I am hopeful that we’ll see a fiery, angry, hungry team against OKC on Sunday.

That's a loss I can handle.

Unlike the loss in Dallas.

It was inspiring to watch Brewer, Faried & Andersen in the second half, giving it their all and getting the Nuggets back into it. I’m ecstatic that GK rode it out with those guys, rather than bringing in Harrington or Koufos, like I was waiting for him to do.

What I love about Faried is his confidence

when asked prior to the game how he had performed this year he said “bad” because he hadn’t had a double-double. He took that ball to the rim time and time again in crunch time, he went after Memphis players verbally and so forth. That missed blockout will not shake his confidence, it will only make him stronger,

Nuggets set another low in scoring 15 in the first but go out and 87 in the next 3 quarters. They were one stop away from a win! One Stop!!!! At least we will not lose by 60 in OKC.

OKC could be without Westbrook and Perkins. Limit KD and keep Ibaka off the offensive glass (I know, not gonna happen), and we could pull one out.

I hope you are right and this is a turning point

Still, hard to get excited about a game that was a blowout when it mattered then the backups made a comeback when Memphis got overconfident and shut down too early. Like the nuggets used to do back when they won games. 3-9. I will be happy when they start winning again, not after blowouts.

Really TIDBM?

I admit that the first half was deplorable, but after what we saw in Dallas, how can you help but be encouraged by the heart, passion, and desire this team showed in the 2nd half? I was really expecting a repeat of the Dallas game, where we curled up in the fetal position and took it up the ass for the last two quarters. Instead, our team (yes, the entire team imo) stepped up and said, “we/re not gonna get punked like this again.”

For the most part… loved the energy that Brewer and Faried brought. Hope both can get regular minutes.

Al is NOT a confident player right now. Has not confidence he can hit an outside shot, and it’s hurting the rest of his offense. Until he gets it together, next to worthless for us.

Another disappointing close loss

but I was encouraged with the effort we brought in the second half. Brewer really helped us out in the 3rd quarter.

Very happy that Faried played meaningful minutes tonight. He had a great performance despite not boxing out on the putback. He’s a rookie, he will learn from the experience.

Also loved Bird’s energy. He played solid for us tonight and proved he should get more run than Kosta Doufas.

I have to give Miller his props, but it just baffles me how he looks so terrible in some games then in others the dude is fantastic.

Big Al looked terrible tonight and I was dissapointed with him. The dude’s old and the compacted schedule is obviously wearing him down. Maybe we should try to trade him.

Also, good to see Karl sticking with the lineup in crunch time that got us back in the game.

I’m going to say it again, I think we overpaid for AAA and Nene. AAA just looks lost and Nene can’t even get on the court on a consistant basis.

This was a heartbreaking loss for me, but at least this team showed me that they have heart.

I just think we overpaid for both of them. There’s no way AAA should have received a $50 million contract. We should have let Houston overpay for Nene

That was the biggest competition. If Denver offered him much lower, he likely would have just taken his chances with that. And been unrestricted the next year. In hindsight, that’s not looking that bad right now.

CMON!!!! Were not playing fantasy basketball!

Can’t you guys see there is more to a player then putting up good stats! If that’s the case maybe we should start Burger because he is averaging about 16…What you are not saying about Nene is, is that he plays real good Defense, forces turnovers, actually rotates and plays the pick and roll better. He gives us a bonafide post up threat, which can force doubles and give Ty room to manuever. He is a threat off of the pick and roll. He shoots a great percentage. Is he an All Star? Of course not, but he is a step down. Name how many PF’s are better than him. Didn’t you see the teams that had space all line up to try to get Nene. interesting to me that the same people that dog out Nene for underachieving think JR Smith is a God. Jr puts the under in achieving. It will be fun to watch a team of chuckers out there in NY…Lin, JR, Amare, Melo….haha…they all will be taking shots away from each other. Meanwhile they probably will have about 25 turnovers a game and shoot under 45%

by Bigdorph on Feb 18, 2012 1:16 AM MST up reply actions

Disagree

Jr’s game matured quite a bit last year. Far less knucklehead moments, and most were due to his terrible relationship with GK. Knicks fans are going to love him like Denver fans did – – he is really fun to watch. If he can get in synch with Dantoni (a big IF), he could find a really nice role in NY, much like John Starks did in the 80s/90’s (also an eccentric 2 Guard and very popular in NY).

There are probably more then just a few of us wondering if we signed the wrong 2 Guard to a big new contract.

It's like people on here are addicted to the idea of the bad contract

constantly searching for whose bad contract is to blame for whatever the current woes of the team are. The truth is, there are no bad contracts on this team. First it was Harrington, then he played okay so people shut up about that. Then it was bird, but guess what he doesn’t get paid much and is a backup. Now it is AAA for some reason. He got $38 million over 5 years, slightly above average.

Let me put that in perspective for you. Last year Kmart made almost $17 million dollars. The year that the nuggets traded for Iverson, between salary and luxury tax, Kmart cost them almost $25 million. That is a bad contract.

AAA will be fine, and any time an opportunity to improve arises, his contract is palatable enough that he can be traded.

Nene’s salary is right where the market value should be..sorry a big man that is solid is worth a lot of money…See Kwame Brown and Dalembert’s contract…they can’t play and got 7 mil…Chandler got more than Nene and has no offensive game. Lessons Confirmed Tonight

Much to be glad about tonight and important lessons learned re rotations.
Faried must be the permanent backup power forward, start when Nene is hurt and the first big off the bench. GK must let go of his fantasy that Al H can defend proven big men and trading him now may make sense.Sign Chandler to a multiyear contract if price is right, then Rudy becomes expendable because he is a me-first shooter and inconsistent defender. Brewer and Bird important energy guys in short spurts and Miller is essential until team matures and long term backup point is secured’
Let’s get off the back of Ty, Nene and AAA’ they have real limits but are solid contributors. .

If there is such a thing as moral victories, I am a witness!

Hated that we lost on an ORB, but great to see the Rook out there giving some energy and toughness. The key to our team is 2 things:

1)Learn how to play better D, figure out what the hell we are doing on the pick and roll. Will we really switch and allow Rudy Gay to shoot over Andre, will we double a shooter with 2 seconds on the shot clock to leave our man wide open, will we allow ourselves to be screened for an open shot? Faried will not allow himself to be screened like a little wuss.

2)Sit Al Harrington. Which will go along way in helping out #1. Yes it was great that Faried played the majority of the rest of the 2nd Half, However it took way too long for him to yank Harrington in the second and first half. He just can’t play D a lick…and if he can’t score. Park him on the bench. When Nene comes back I don’t want to see this guy….

Again…Key to the season is the man behind the wheel….The man with the ball in his hands. Ty Lawson. Will he find the best matchups. Will he penetrate more aggressively? Will he take more leadership? Will he score when we need him to? If he plays well, we will challenge for the Western Conference…end of story!

by Bigdorph on Feb 18, 2012 3:07 AM MST up reply actions

No lack of effort...

The Nuggets have to keep improving. During this rough stretch, Manimal, Birdman, Brewer have taken steps. But the losses have mounted because Nuggets are getting picked apart by offenses. The definitely need to step up their D. I still have faith that they will.

They may not become the champs that we all dream of this year (although I think they will have as good of a chance as anyone). But it won’t be for lack of effort. I still see a team that plays hard. If anything, it is a mental game for the Nuggets right now. Need a stretch of wins to get that confidence back.

If the FO office sticks to the plan and lets this group have a normal offseason (with a lockout) together, I think all this experience is going to pay of big. Great organizations don’t try to to change plans every year, they have a plan and stick to it. I like were the Nuggets are heading. Keep grinding…

And box out better!

by djyoung71 on Feb 18, 2012 7:49 AM MST reply actions

Much better without a lockout

But good post at the end of a hilarious thread – DStiffs really is one of the joys of my harried middle aged life.

Right on about the organization: ours is different now and we have to stick to the plan, ummm, whatever it is. My impression is that Ujiri’s PLAN was to put together a young, fast, deep team and let them grow together, with Gallo, Ty and AAA as leaders in scoring, energy and defense, respectively. In that case Dre, Bird and Al are not in the long-term plan, or even middle-term.

I cannot figure AAA out. The mental issue you mention seems to affect him more than anyone, which is odd because he looks like such a solid personality. Consistency is an important part of his presence, so it’s weird to see him playing so up and down. He should be an anchor, not an albatross, and he’s worth every penny when he’s on his game.

by slader on Feb 18, 2012 8:23 AM MST up reply actions

A loss is still a loss

If this game proved anything its that guys like Lawson and AAA are not self starters. They need someone else to get things revved up and then they can kick into action. This is especially true with Lawson and its a shame because even though I like him he’s not going to be the team leader we want/need.

The near comeback in the second half was great basketball but don’t pin the loss on Faried. Pin it on the guys in the first half who did next to nothing; Al, AAA, Lawson, I’m talking to you guys.

by georgekarl on Feb 18, 2012 8:22 AM MST reply actions

Too true, too true

You can’t play half a game and expect to win, just like you can’t win if you only play at one end of the court – half the time.

Lawson MUST be a self-starter, and jump-start the others as well. Ty usually does this, but when he doesn’t the whole team looks awful. Gotta bring that every night.

For AAA, energizing has ever been his main role, but when things bog down he really looks like he’s wading through Jell-o. I still think he will settle into a adapted form of his game from last year – please do so now, Arron! And start by getting back to what got you minutes – D, D and D!!

Championship team and Nene?

I’ve been in Denver for quite a while now, and like many cities, our fans love a championship. But I’ve found Denver fans also love teams that give all-out effort, while not necessarily winning every game. Denver appreciate over-achievers, and are generally savvy enough to appreciate the “little” guy who gets stuff done. The Nugs that beat Karl’s Sonics in ‘93(?) were a .500 team. But McNichols was ROCKIN every game. The crowd came out to see the over-achievers. We loved Bird when he was an over-achiever. We loved our bench tonight (including future starter Manimal) as they out played our “starters”. Although it was a split, many on here loved tonight’s effort – classic Denver fans. I think most of us would be beyond thrilled with our “no super-stars” getting deep into the playoffs.
So I can see why there is a lot of dissension on Nene – you look at what he is capable of doing with his speed and strength, and he never seems to reach his potential. You can see it in fantasy leagues as well as the real league – big man are a little scarce. Above, somebody was whining that Nene is only something like 16 pts and 7 boards per game. Well, realistically, that’s what you get at that price. But like a typical Denver fan, I want over-achieving, not under-achieving. I want Nene to put as much into hoops as he does “football”.
And in general, I want everyone on this team to achieve or over achieve, like the team that got out to the 15-6 start. And while it is good to see if for a half, that ain’t gonna cut in in the nba, nor is playing for just one half going to cut it with Denver fans.

Can't Minimize the Impact of Losing Your Entire Starting Front Line to Injury

That’s huge, and the Nuggs are going to suck for a while until they get back. Last night was encouraging because the team really fought in the 2nd Half and it started on the DEFENSIVE end. Great defense leads to fast breaks and better offense. The effort on defense has really sucked during the losing streak, and thus the offense was pathetic too. Last night, in the 2nd Half, they finally returned to aggressive, hustling DEFENSE, and it led to a lot a good offense. My breakdown:

Ty: Ty looked like Ty in 2nd Half. Where have you been Blurr??
Brewer – Played with passion and energy. Is he emerging as the heart of this team?
Manimal – Took a HUGE step last night. Though he blew the block-out at the end, he showed his team and himself how he can contribute this year – - energy, hustle, rebounding and DUNKS.
Dre – Dre looked like Dre again in the second half, with some great passing and nailing big shots. Maybe he has been hurting the last few games??
Bird – loved the hustle and effort he brought on defense. Looked a bit like the old Bird, and his effort was contagious. Made me a little sad that we may trade him. (But has to be done if we are going to sign Chandler for more than 1 year.
Moz – Good to see him back. I think he is more valuable to this team than we give him credit for. Having that big guy back in the lane allows the other guys to play tighter perimeter defense. (The Nuggs biggest weakness this year – - showing why signing Will is SO important).

On a down note -

AAA – took a step back. Played lackluster on both ends, and the Nuggs are going to need more from their starting 2 Guard with the big new contract. The OKC game is going to be big for AAA to show that the last couple of games were a fluke.

Obviously you are right

because there is no way a team like the spurs could win without their best player (Ginobli) or that Miami could win games if some of their big three are out. Dallas won the title last year after significant injuries. Orlando went to the finals after their starting PG went down for most of the year.

Every team deals with injuries. The upside of this team was supposed to be that they had a dozen rotation players. Even if you are missing three of them, you will have a 9 man rotation.

I knew you'd go there TIDBMTID

but we are not the Spurs or dallas if for no other reason than our coach doesnt begin to compare to their coaches.

You also unintentionally make my point IMO because you cite a player or so, we have our whole front line down, at the same time we even weathered absences to back ups for personal reasons, we tried to weather missing an important piece because of lockout.

We cannot win under those conditions. We won previously, we dont win now. Thats proof.

Each case you cite is a specific. LBJ could win with 11 clowns. Dallas was pretty healthy for playoff run. Orlando had one injury.

They are not commensurate with what we are experiencing.

After trade last year, gallo went down for 8 games. We won all 8. Why because we had way more depth then. Chandler just filled in for Gallo, we had KMart, JR

This year without Gallo and Moz, there are no really adequate stop gaps. Chandler is gone and KK, God love him, is a starter only for a lottery team.

I took away the eastern conference games

because they aren’t the real competition for the nuggets. Judged against their western conference opponents, the results have not be favorable, healthy or not. The writing was on the wall before the injuries for anyone who wanted to see it. I’ll be happy to be wrong and this team starts winning again, but I don’t see it absent substantial changes in strategy on offense and defense. I think that only happens with a coaching change. I have some issues with part of your assertion TIDBM

I will agree that the team was probably playing a bit above it’s head pre-injury bug, but what you seem to be discounting is the team was 7-7 against the western conference (not great, but not terrible) heading into the Lakers game – and the Moz injury. Four of those losses were on the road, and 3 came on the 2nd night of a back to back – including one of the home losses. It’s impossible to say how the games lost during this bad streak would have played out if we were healthy, but to say that there is a possibility of 2-3 more wins is, in my opinion, not unreasonable. If that happens, then our western conference record – while still not great – is not nearly as dire looking as you are asserting. Basically, if you credit the injuries as having any effect, then you cannot discount them in regards to our play against the Western conference.

PS: I know you don’t like Karl, but your blanket assertion that this team will not make the playoffs with him as coach beyond the all star break has no foundation in fact, but is based on your biased suppositions.

TIDBMTID

I think we played this poorly in early January last year when Chauncey heard his name in the trade rumor mill with Melo. The team sort of shut down after that point.

The Puffy-Mase era (and Puffy-Mase in general) ruined hip hop.

k, we'II make the pIayoffs, but at this point, i wouId rather just get a high pick and re buiId the right way.

and no they are not gonna make a deep pIayoff run, how do you figure that, not just because of karI but the pIayers havent shown they can perform in the pIayoffs either, other than gaIIo for one game where it was jr who Ied them anyways, and nene but he onIy shows up earIy in games.

I am talking about my belief.

I still believe that this team is much closer to the team we saw early in the year than to the one that is mired in an injury-riddled slump. Because of that, I believe that we can play with anyone in the league on any night, and would be able to win a series against the majority of teams in the west. Do I think we’re a championship team this year? Probably not. Do I think we’re on the right track for building a championship team? Absolutely.

I’m curious as to what you mean by the phrase “re-build the right way.” Are you wanting to use the superstar model? In other words, are you hoping that a high draft pick will turn into Wade, KD, etc.?

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

by Russscot on Feb 18, 2012 12:09 PM MST up reply actions

no I just want to cIean house, the roster was buiIt to karI's preferences.

i Iike gaIIo, nene, and maybe ty, but other pieces i see as repIaceabIe and if the oppurtunity is there to get a high draft pick or a great pIayer is there for them then they shouId trade them.

i wouId not use those earIy in the season games to assess this team, whiIe this team wouId improve a Iot with nene, gaIIo back, a Iot of teams earIy in the season didnt have their Iegs Iike we did and didnt find their game tiII Iater Iike j1zz and mavs, aIso scoutin reports are comin in and teams are more prepared to pIay against our styIe with karI, and as karI said if we dont run we dont win…

I think you might assigning George more influence

than he probably has, and making Ujiri seem a little less powerful than he is.

Can you explain more why you think George would have this much influence over Ujiri’s decision making?

I saw that.

My perception is that they talked about the personnel currently on the team. Not about pending moves.

I just want to add Russ

that IMO we wouldnt just have 2 – 3 more wins. I think we’d have closer to 6 and be seeded 2nd or 3rd.

7-7 is your best case scenario in the west?

Even at .500 that’s not a playoff contender. And they are going to have to make substantial improvements to get to .500 against the west.

What are the facts here? 7-14 against the western conference at this point. 3-9 in their last twelve games. Yes, it is my opinion that this is no longer a playoff team with Karl as the coach. I’d be happy to be proven wrong. It is my belief that the injuries and schedule are preventing the talent from overcoming poor schemes and poor in game management, which they have been able to do in prior seasons.

The point of my post was that

before the losing streak, we were 7-7 against the west, not that a 7-7 record was a best case scenario. Further, that if we had not been bit by the injury bug, our schedule in the last 12 games – which were predominantly against western conference teams – might not have been as dismal as it is. If we’re in agreement that the injuries have in some ways limited our ability to win games, then to assert that our record against the West proves our lack of ability to win in the playoffs seems to me to be imposing a double standard. I will, however, agree that the team should have a greater ability to overcome injuries, and that all teams have injuries which the truly great team overcome.

Just don't hold on to the damn basketball!!!

by Russscot on Feb 18, 2012 1:29 PM MST up reply actions

Russ I agree with what you post but still have to nitpick

If we werent injured, I am as sure as I am that dropped balls fall downwards, that we would without a doubt have had a much better record than we have had over past 3 weeks. What possible reason could anyone think otherwise?

Not all teams have significant, pervasive injuries that the Nuggets have had. A player or two, maybe, but not what we’ve dealt with.

No one has ever said, not you, not I, not anyone I’ve ever read on this sight, that we are a truly great team. Even healthy, I cant say we are a truly great team.

There is one such team (Miami) and 2 teams that nudge greatness (OKC, Chicago). Healthy, we can battle those teams but suffering crippling injuries we are closer to the bottom than the top.

Thats why we extended Gallo, thats why we signed Nene long term, thats why we are trying to get Wilson on board, that’s why Ujiri insisted that Moz be included in trade

If we, if Ujiri, thought we could just replace those players with any Tom, Dick, Harry, Koufas, Anderson, and pups like Faried, Stone and Hamilton, why work so hard on signing/extending certain players?

Fairly healthy, we are close to a .700 team. Drastically depleted, we are a .300 team, pretty much what the record shows.

ok so i don't mean to change the subject but i need help with some hardcore, oldschool, denver nuggets trivia circa '88-92

my sister just got me an autographed pennant of the nuggets roster from the late 80’s-early 90’s for $3 at a flea market. THREE FUCKING DOLLARS!

has all the greats from the post issel playing days, alex english, fat lever, calvin natt, wayne cooper, michael adams, t.r. dunn, danny shayes and some of the not so greats, ottis smith jay vincent, andre moore and my personal favorite, the big stiff himself, doug moe.

my question, that i can not seem to find an answer on the web for, so it will require the memory of a HARD CORE STIFF is this:

there is an autograph from long time nba player and current memphis grizzlies broadcaster hank mcdowell with the number 9. i don’t remember him ever playing with us so my suspicion is that whomever originally got these autographs must have done so in the pre-season before cuts. is there anyone who can verify this?

i have no intention of selling it. it is going in the pat cave till i can find a good place to donate it, but i’m trying to find out the history of it.

also if anyone knows of a good nuggets related charity, or an individual who deserves this pennant and would cherish it please let me know. 15 year old patrick would have cherished this, but 35 year old patrick doesn’t have the autograph joy that someone else might.

my e-mail is pat01010101@yahoo.com.

b.t.w. i've narrowed it down to being from the '87 season based on the fact...

that it was the only year jay vincent and otis smith were on the roster together

Yep

It was the 87-88 season. If I remember, the Nuggs extended Fat Lever through 1992 around the same time as well. Good times.

No problem.

And the soonest I’d get to Denver would be 5 years from now, when I’m in my late 20’s. If only Colorado was closer to Canada.

That’s quite an awesome find, though. Best of luck on your hunt to find somebody in Denver who will cherish it.

OKC Game

I just want to see the team play hard with energy and passion like it did in the second half against Memphis. If we do, we could sneak out a win. If we don’t, this could be another down by 30 in the second half. Hope Nuggs just scrap, and turn Manimal loose.

wow did anyone see kmart bIast karI on si.com

says what we have been tryin to say here. that karI got the team he wanted, but it’s not goin to the way they wanted, that jr, meIo and he arent the probIem, that they werent seIfsh or pIayers that teams cant win with them.

kmart doesnt Iike how karI makes it seem Iike the team has some how improved with out them, and takes a shot at karI’s ego because karI Iikes to make it seem Iike he’s a great coach, then meIo wouIdnt have wanted to Ieave. i agree in part that meIo may have not Ieft if the team was more abIe, aIthough he did want to go to NYK, if the team was more competitive and didnt go out in the 1st round, and the coach didnt bIame him and other pIayers and not take any responsibiIity himseIf, then the big market might seem Iess attrctive.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
