Kings vs. Nuggets recap: Koufos, Manimal dethrone Kings

The Nuggets went on the offensive against the Kings Wednesday (Jan. 4th) night winning a laugher 110-83. All 12 players in uniform played and all 12 players in uniform scored a minimum of 6 points each. With Nene sitting out for the second straight game, with a bruised left heel, Kosta Koufos stepped in again and recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. However, stealing the show was rookie Kenneth Faried aka Manimal - who electrified the remaining crowd with a couple powerful blocks, two free throws to ensure tacos, and a blow the roof off alley-oop from Rudy Fernandez.

Star-divide

What a dunk and what a pass from Rudy Fernandez. You all know the play that I'm talking about ... we'll get to it in a minute.

The Faried dunk didn't happen until the 8:40 mark of the fourth quarter. But the action before that was somewhat forgettable. The Nuggets came out and controlled the pace early and got out to a big lead. The Kings were playing their fourth game in five nights and just didn't have the legs or heart to stay with the Nuggets in this one.

Midway through the first quarter, Timofey Mozgov was finally rewarded for running the court when Andre Miller found Fernandez on a long lead pass and Rudy fed Mozgov for a nice jam, 19-14 Nuggets. Just moments later, the same play happened again as Miller found Fernandez on a leak out and Rudy fed Mozgov for another dunk, 23-14 Denver. The big Russian finished with 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in 20 minutes, but recorded some cheap fouls once again (3). I'd like to see Ty Lawson work the ball in to Moz in the post a bit, but it was great to see the big guy finally get rewarded for getting down the court in a hurry.

Koufos continued to show why he needs minutes. His height and nose for the ball were apparent once again as he collected 10 rebounds and his soft touch around the rim netted him 10 points in 24 minutes. It was great to see Karl recognize that the Ohioan-Greek was one rebound away from his first double-double as the coach re-inserted K2 into the game for Chris Andersen late in the fourth quarter to get that 10th board.

It's hard to remember what really happened in the first half as the Nuggets were on cruise control. Danilo Gallinari, Lawson, and Arron Afflalo all got plenty of rest as none of them played over 26 minutes in this one. Gallo finished with just 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in 25 minutes and he didn't attempt a single three-pointer. As a team, the Nuggets were just 3-9 from downtown. Their lowest total of attempted treys this season ... nice to see.

Andre Miller finished with 6 assists, which leaves him with 1,999 total assists as a member of the Denver Nuggets. Who will get his 2,000 assist in Denver? Miller must have been working with Andersen on the lob this week in practice. The two tried, unsuccessfully to connect on two lob passes in the first half. Finally as the third quarter was winding down, the two connect on a nice 'Dre to Birdman lob pass alley-oop to get Miller to 1,999 and it gave Denver a 85-64 lead.

At the 9:49 mark of the fourth quarter, the Pepsi Center crowd was treated to Faried checking into the game for Al Harrington. I can recall watching Clinton Portis as a rookie for the Broncos and just knowing that at some point he was going to break a long one and we'd finally get to see all that speed on display. Similar thing with Faried ... Nuggets Nation has been waiting for a jaw-dropping dunk, and tonight they were finally treated to one. But before that alley-oop that he must have climbed 245-feet in the air to get, Faried had a nice block on one end that led to a Birdman dunk on the other, 92-64 Nuggets. And later in the period, Travis Outlaw was on the baseline and started flying towards the rim for a dunk attempt, Faried met him in the air and just stuffed the attempt. Outlaw didn't get near the rim and the Rookie got to show off his skills, once again.

I'm not sure what we learned from this game. The Kings didn't have much of a shot, even before stepping on the floor - playing not only their fourth game in five nights, but the second of a back-to-back-to-back set as well. Mozgov, Koufos, and Faried got some nice experience and boosted their confidence. Now the trio must carry the lessons they learned forward and continue to become bigger parts of the Nuggets rotation.

Faried looked a lot more comfortable on the floor tonight. Right before his monster alley-oop he was actually playing nice post defense and his man had to throw the ball back out to Isaiah Thomas, which led to the turnover that led to the Fernandez to Faried play. We saw Manimal grab a couple nice rebounds, had a nice putback after an offensive board, block shots, and he was an active defender. Faried finished the night with 7 points (2-2 shooting, 3-4 from the foul line), 4 rebounds (1 offensive), 4 blocks, 1 foul, and 1 turnover in 9:49 of playing time. Having a nose for the ball can't be taught, but Faried will still need to prove himself to earn more playing time. Don't get your hopes up for seeing Manimal too much, as the list ahead of him is a long one, but this was a very encouraging game.

A nice win and an expected one for the Nuggets.

Enjoy:

Views you can use:

  • The Nuggets out-rebounded the Kings 50-36, but surrendered 15 offensive boards to the Kings.
  • Denver shot a blistering 46-76 from the field (60.5%), Harrington finished 7-10 (1-2 from deep) from the floor for 15 points.
  • The Nuggets tallied 31 team assists, 11 blocks, and out-scored the Kings in fast-break points 31-9. The perfect stats for a Step on the tired team's neck early game.

Fun game!

Loved all the people who stuck around to watch the scrubs.

That dunk for Faried have to be amongst the best debut points ever scored.

Nice to see Rudy have a solid game. Nice to see the offense clicking for the seven-footers. Nice to see Al continue to roll. There’s always a lot of room for improvement — 27 turnovers!? — but let’s just sit back and enjoy an easy win, hopefully one of many more.

Good win..

The Kings are a mess. The Nuggets had 26 TOs (26!!) and still a blowout.

I agree.. no questions were really answered. But a big warning, if you want to compete against the Nuggets on their home court you better play hard… really hard.

The shooting looked a little better. What little was needed. And I do like the defense, GK has everyone really busting their tail. Nuggets would have scored another 10 easy if they had a 3rd PG for garbage time. Rudy is funny at PG.

by djyoung71 on Jan 4, 2012 11:28 PM MST reply actions

To be fair, a lot of those turnovers probably came because the Nuggets were seriously throwing the ball around with no regard at points when they were already up 20. Seriously, all those downcourt lobs?

and I just want to credit our Gallo for that block on Thornton that I could only describe as sublime.

To avoid the body contact, then get the hand over Thornton’s head and flick away the ball like that, not as exciting as Manimal’s dunk but a real high level skill play.

I can see why the team struggles with Cousins

He is clearly talented but has no clue how to play on a team. He has to be the biggest ball stopper in the league. Sad to see really…at this rate, he will have a very short career unless he starts listening to his coaches and fellow players.

I have been talking down on Koufos

so want to give him his props for a very strong game. More of that son. And you can smile a bit in your postgame, I doubt GK is watching so he doesn’t need to hear you say “just happy for the win” 15 times, but then again has to be the first postgame interview ever for the guy so I shouldn’t be too tough.

The Dunk. Wow. That was fun to watch 25 times.

by Teekalong on Jan 5, 2012 12:38 AM MST reply actions

I was happy for his first interview

But I agree – it was kind of funny listening to him give the, “We’re just trying to win one game at a time. Good team win. Just happy for the win.” cliche speech. KK got a double double last night so no complaints here… just happy that he got to show more of what he can do.

by Avarra on Jan 5, 2012 10:31 AM MST up reply actions

I know Teek, me too

I still think that Moz has more upside but I’m starting to think that KK’s savvy should help earn him minutes probably at Birdman’s expense. Also, seeing him paired up with Moz is not a bad thing and that front court is awfully tall.

by sgiustra on Jan 5, 2012 11:56 AM MST up reply actions

Moz is really starting to look like a stiff to me.

I love when he runs the floor, but just about everything else looks poor aside from FTs. As long as we are winning, I’m all for getting him experience, but I’m not convinced he doesn’t hurt the Nuggets when he’s out there. I can’t say the same for K2. He plays well, gets rebounds, has a nice touch, is strong and athletic and can jump. He is a stiff as well, but he seems to add a little when he’s on the floor. Moz’s numbers are just atrocious.

Its been a while

been extremely busy and distracted with numerous caos during this lovely break. Anywho hope all the Stiffs out there are enjoying the hollidays and a happy New Year to all of you. While I have been busy I have watched 4 full games and parts of the other 3. I attended the Bucks game (found 4 club level tickets for $40 total… It blew my mind really). So far I am very impressed with this squad. With how they are built and the young and fresh legs mixed with the depth this team very well may do some serious damage. Fat Al Harrington used to be my second favorite Al Harrington behind the Mr. Al Harrington who owns the Wacky Wavy Arm flailing inflatable Tube Men store but Fat Al has just jumped to the top. I really hope he keeps this play up because he is lookin like the Harrington of old who could anchor a team however he is much wiser now. Gallo and AAA still need to step their game up but I have been impressed with Ty/Dre so far. Rudy is getting there and as soon as this team starts hitting tres consistantly then look out cuz they will be able to beat anyone. I am very excited to see how this season plays out and I can’t admit I peak at NY’s box scores from time to time and can’t help but chuckle at the fact that they lost to the Bobcats tonight with Melo scoring 32 and Amare adding a dbl dbl. As of now and for this season I will take the depth. =) Catch up with ya’ll on the flip side.

It's OK to admit you peak at the Knicks

We absolutely owe it to ourselves as fans. A. Because we have an invested interest in that team, and seeing how they progress through 2014 when we take their lottery pick. B. Because I’m sick of people calling the Nuggets fans “bitter” when we actually knew we’d be a better team without Melo.

And yes, the best part about seeing the Knicks lose is that Melo still scores 30+ points…Just shows he’ll get his at the cost of a W any night and every night.

rootytoot 8 assists which was nice to see

if you watched the game you saw that long lead passes from andre led to 3-4 of those assists. rootytoot has a very decent passing eye, and that lob to faried was almost beyond belief, as i thought no way in hell he gets up to it.

really made the earlier article on andre miller very timely, indeed!!

Yeah, Rudy is typical Euro

with team first mentality and a natural passer. If he hits some outside shots he’ll be more valuable to us than JR was last year.

by sgiustra on Jan 5, 2012 12:03 PM MST up reply actions

Even if he doesn't hit those shots

I suspect he will help us more than JR. I will miss him on the team and thought he got better every year but Rudy will still make two smart plays for every JR headcase move.

Why do poeple think Jamal Crawford is great and JR is headcase? JR does everything Crawford does but plays better defense, get more rebounds, and passes better. They both force tough shots and can score in bunches.

Seems like Faried should at least be in the rotation ahead of Brewer. Haven’t seem much from Brewer at all yet.

Also saw a blurb in the paper this morning about Hamilton and Stone playing in the D-League. I do wish GK gave more opportunities to rooks. But this team is pretty stacked, especially with Harrington playing so well.

Karl talked about this on the radio yesterday...

That while depth is a blessing, it’s near impossible to give everyone who can play regular minutes, and give everyone who is capable of closing a close game out that opportunity as well. It’s all about playing the hot hand and massaging hurt feelings afterwards.

his offense comes from either being wide open or in the paint

I’m thinking, put him on a small guard who is exploding on us, maybe a Westbrook. His height and jumping will bother ‘em and his speed and quickness will not allow them to take advantage of him. There’s a role for Brew somewhere at sometime

I’d rather have him in the rotation and Faried in for garbage time at least until further into the season. Faried is still too raw and looks lost on the court. Having your teammates set you up for highlights during garbage time is fun, though.

Can Jimmer's game adapt to the NBA?

All he wanted to do was hover around the three point line, wait until there was no other shot open and then chuck it from wherever he was standing.

If he's Steve Kerr

I know Kerr hit plenty of big shots, but if thats all that Jimmer is, then his NBA career will be a failure.

His shots aint going down but the criticism of him, “cant get shots off” “too slow” “too Whi” I mean “Not an NBA player” are simply wrong.

He gets good looks all the time and he could pass if the team is constructed to reward passing. But going to Kings was the worst possible thing that could have happened to Fredette. There are a dozen teams on which Jimmer would be an excellent instant fit.

Did you see the play last night where he dribbled the ball at the top of the key for 20 seconds, and when he passed it to a wing the shot clock buzzed off? That is a huge mental error to not recognize the shot clock like that.

BTW that pass you point to, I think I remember it, was actually a good pass designed to have the shooter take an available shot as the clock wound down. I think the shooter didnt have the clock sense on that one.

Also the over dribbling, it must be hard with the Kings to play with a team concept in mind. Imagine if Jimmer played with the NUgs, ball whipping around, everyone happy for everyone else. How different things might be.

Dont understand it because Manu is one of the 10 or so true basketball maestros. Even if you hate him, hate his success against us, please appreciate his amazing play.

the flopping is irritating

what about the shooting? Passing? defense? Rebounding? Unselfishness? Court sense? Blocked shots? Spectacular hilite plays?

IMO all those things that Manu does completely trumps a little flopping. Anyway even the flopping tells me he is trying to make some thing out of nothing. No fault there.

The most interesting part of #Nuggets F Al Harrington’s body transformation? He weighs the exact 265 lbs he did last season.

Which leads more credence to the idea that the plantar fasciatis was a HUGE problem for him.

Ok, OK Cat, so a lot of us went a little overboard on

Al’s lack of production last year. So shoot ’em, OK?

But seriously, Al 265(!), we know he is an outside shooter but at his height, a muscular 265officially makes him a beast, Thgats Lebron James territory.

Any wonder why Bogut couldnt budge him the other day?

Also, with all of the hope we pin on the performance of others for the playoffs, how much would it help us to have a 6’8" hulk who hits outside shots and is as unmoveable as an iron gate, and he’s coming off the bench.

Wonder what Jerry Sloan could do with the Kings....

Hopefully he’s not interested.

There's probably only one who can calm him down.

But he’s happily doing yoga in Montana.

Optimism, pessimism, F*CK THAT; we're gonna make it happen. As God as my bloody witness, I'm hell-bent on making it work.

Two wonderful men in the late twilight of their magnificent lives

Why on earth would they want to come back to the NBA and coach players who think Kim K is da bomb?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
