Nuggets at Grizzlies: Second half thread

Despite Danilo Gallinari's horrific 0-7 (0-4) performance (6-6 on free throws for 6 points) in tonight's first half, the Nuggets are still up 49-37 on the offensive woeful Memphis Grizzlies (no Grizz player is in double figures yet). Nene is leading the way for Denver with 11 points on 5-7 shooting and 5 rebounds, but he also has 3 fouls. Post your second half comments here ...

That's the thing with Gallo

He’s not super consistent. He has a bad night for every three good ones. But he always seems to come back with a great game the next night.

I don’t expect to see Gallo take any more shots. When it wasn’t falling for him in Philly, he just passed the ball to the hot hand, which was Andre Miller.

Nothing to be concerned about.

Yes, I would like to see him start driving the lane. He's settling.

He had Gasol on him on the perimeter and opted for the easy fadeaway … gotta keep on the hustle to the paint!

So you will punish a guy for having a bad game?

Not taking bad shots, not forcing, playing within the offense, helping the team in other ways just not hitting shots. Isn’t the rule that shooters shoot? This loss can be attributed to not being able to play physical with the Grizz

they pushed us around and since the refs weren’t calling it on either end, we should have realized it and stepped up. Instead, we let them. Settled for jump shots, didn’t box out strong, and didn’t respond on defense.

I agree in principle,

but the main “culprit” for the Griz was not a big, but rather a 2 guard. Namely, Tony Allen. He’s the one who boxed out Nene, blocked Al, and harrassed both AAA and Dre into to’s.

that’s what that is. Embarrassing. And Karl left him out there. I don’t think Karl is as much to blame tonight, but AAA needed to be parked on the bench. Why he sticks with players playing like ABSOLUTE shit like AAA tonight and Harrington last game is beyond my comprehension.

So this is a bit of a mystery.

But AAA does those little things. Like staying in basketball shape, hitting free throws, and not defending like prior years.

I still think the need for a "closer" is mostly a myth

I think you just need to run your offense and get good shots. Problem is, we don’t have an offense, so combined with the lack of a go-to man late nobody knows what the fuck to do, and when a couple things go wrong everyone shits their pants and we have a game like this.

by Rainbow skyline on Jan 31, 2012 9:03 PM MST reply actions

Exactly, Superstars and Closer are indeed overrated

A team like this can be very successful (and the Spurs come to mind), but it must be WELL coached. A 3 guard line-up, with a soft Big man (Nene) in the closing seconds will not win games. Got have right line-ups/ formulas at the right time.

Karl Still Coaching Like This is a 82 Game Schedule

His tight rotations are running down this team and it shows when we have very little energy to end tight games. Supposedly, we are incredibly deep, but Karl sticks to his tight rotations no matter what. This would have been the perfect game to give Faried and Stone some run. The players seem really tired, banged up, and Karl sticks to his 7-8 man rotations. Really short-sighted if you ask me. We are going to need Chandler because our first 7 may not make it to the end of the season…

Those are valid points based on common sense, so you know George Karl isn’t going to do any of that. He’ll stick to his tight rotations and small ball philosophy even if it gets the Nuggets completely out of the playoffs. And then he’ll blame the players because nothing is ever Karl’s fault in his world.

by zeusmith on Jan 31, 2012 9:11 PM MST up reply actions

The MANIMAL is the answer

The team is missing Kenyon Martin. It was better with Nene at C and Martin at PF. Once Manimal is ready for minutes, he’ll give the team the rebounding, energy, and toughness it needs to win games like these. Karl probably just thinks he’s too raw at this point, but you have to give him minutes in the blowouts to develop him because they are going to need him (or someone like him). Mozgov is not good enough (yet?). Wilson Chandler might be of some help also.

More about managing players and egos. Something Karl is good at.

Sloan can handle the reality of the NBA, which is a player’s league. Coaches have such a small impact. This isn’t football, where it is about plays and execution. This is about teamwork and chemistry and egos. And Karl is better than Sloan in that department.

I’m sure you think that with him out, AAA would slide to be a tall 2, but that’s not the way any coach in the NBA would play it

I'm beginning to lean this way myself.

My resistance to his coming back has to do with his pouting about coming off the bench. But that’s not a problem if he starts.

JR is NEVER COMING BACK HERE.

by mtnmagic22 on Jan 31, 2012 9:21 PM MST up reply actions

Chandler

I am a Knicks fan (and Denver fan). I know Wilson’s game well. He’s better than he played for you guys last year, but he has poor shot selection at times and can shoot you right out of a game with bad 3s etc… I was looking at his China stats the other day and even though he’s scoring etc.. he’s terrible from beyond the arc (something like mid 20%). So that part of his game has not improved since last year.

by Wayne Crimi on Jan 31, 2012 9:39 PM MST up reply actions

GK: he's being real snarky in his interview

by mtnmagic22 on Jan 31, 2012 9:18 PM MST reply actions

Ha ha

Good point. I like small ball more than most stiffs. I can do the math and see the advantages speed brings. But it also kills when shots aren’t going in and you need rebounding. It’s just a matter of making adjustments.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 31, 2012 9:21 PM MST up reply actions

ya, but it also kills on the defensive boards

And in OT, you can’t give up any second shots with the limited clock – so small ball is like suicide unless the other team is playing 3 guards too – which the Griz were NOT. Man, we should have won this game – EASILY too.

by mtnmagic22 on Jan 31, 2012 9:23 PM MST up reply actions

Of course

Small ball is good for building leads.

But there comes a time when you need to protect leads. And here GK and small ball fail.

Lawson has more of a scorers mentality and you have 2 creators in the back court. Its was our front line that got mauled and shit kicked in the endgame. Well...

hopefully someone takes something away from this. For the players- show some pride. Don’t go out there, lose your aggression, back down when someone else starts showing some menace on the other team. For the coach- we have lots of players, use them. i don’t mind him going small (no, really), but leaving in the same lineup for most of the 4th quarter, especially when parts of it are not performing, just doesn’t make sense. And some of the lineups have been Don Nelsonian. Mix it up, we have the parts. The free throw shooting- well, that happens. But the rest of these can be fixed. And they have to really.

What this team does in LA on Thursday will be telling about the heart and toughness of this team early in the season. Not saying they have to win, but they have to play aggressive and give full effort and toughness for 48 minutes. They better bring it, even if they don’t come out on top.

especially because our bigs are not that great. But I will give you that Karl has not adjusted at times this year, and a mix of small ball with big and small would likely be better.

that is simply not true the majority of the time, and we are talking about the fact that he employs small ball personnel the majority of the time

it works agains BAD teams with bad, slow footed guards. NEVER is it the better option than playing nene along with kk, timo, manimal who ARE good. i haven’t seen them make the mistakes that most of the little guys have and there is the added bonus that THEY ARE PLAYING THEIR NATURAL FUCKING POSITION and thus have at the very least a rebounding draw instead of a complete deficit.

by Patrick KB. Nugget on Jan 31, 2012 9:37 PM MST up reply actions

I've seen it work a lot of time

including tonight. If there was always one of the bigs out there it would probably be even more disastrous because neither is all that good yet. Somewhere around 25-30 minutes for the two would be fine for me, but it needs to be spread out well. I remember seeing the leaders in +/- being almost all guards for the Nugs so it does work quite a bit.

I’m not talking about solely tonight, I am saying small ball works often enough.

and those plus minus stats are ridiculous

we are a good team that plays small ball 75% of the game. obviously the guards will have a higher +- through minutes alone.

by Patrick KB. Nugget on Jan 31, 2012 9:43 PM MST up reply actions

It all depends on the situation

You are blind if you can’t see the advantages of a small-ball line-up.

But I’m not so stupid to suggest that they work all the time. Cos they don’t.

One is good for building a lead, and one is good for protecting a lead.

I like Karl, but the criticisms are apt: he is wrong not to put taller rebounders in in many situations.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 31, 2012 9:34 PM MST up reply actions

you have to admit though

it’s frustrating to see Karl continue to seem confused as to why we give up a lot of offensive rebounds sometimes. The small ball lineup certainly has gotten us leads, built on leads, and helped us be successful in many situations. But when the other team puts in a bully like Tony Allen, you have to get tougher. Which I’m sure you agree with.

by El Scorcho! on Jan 31, 2012 9:36 PM MST up reply actions

I think a lot of this has to do with GK's lack of trust in the bigs

which in some ways is warranted but would be good if he had more trust, a better big would be the best solution.

ADVANTAGES OF SMALL BALL LINEUP?

CAN YOU SAY OK CITY? EARLY EXIT WHEN WE SHOULD HAVE BEAT THEM? NO, I DON’T SEE THE ADVANTAGES OF SMALL BALL.

by mtnmagic22 on Jan 31, 2012 9:37 PM MST up reply actions

WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING AT ME?

I am just making a point.

It isn’t an opinion. Look at the line-up stats. A two PG lineup has killed for Denver this year.

But rebounding has hurt Denver in crucial situations. I stand by my point that playing small is a smart tactical move at times. You can build a big lead playing small and fast.

of course, the knife cuts both ways. I get it. Karl, it seems, doesn’t.

Not true.

Nuggets running and going small has built leads in almost every single game. Problem is, other coaches are smart enough to make adjustments: move ball on perimeter, hit threes or miss and get second-hand points since Denver has no one to rebound.

It is a good play some times but Denver needs rebounders to protect a lead.

true, but there are thre under utilized options for his off nights.

No, it has to do with matchups – slow footed guards match up one on one with our guards. It’s the 3rd guard that creates the mismatch at the 3 and 4 spots and thus, they get posted up, shot over and rebounded over.

by mtnmagic22 on Jan 31, 2012 9:45 PM MST up reply actions

Uh... I think I've been saying that for 20 posts - and this WAS all on GK

Every time the Nugs would start to get momentum or go up 6, 8 or 10 points, here would come some CRAZY substitution and back down the margin would go – The Nugs played well – but it was like a yo-yo….

by mtnmagic22 on Jan 31, 2012 9:35 PM MST up reply actions

I agree, keep Mosgov or Koufos in the game to rebound at least

if you want to jerk around, jerk around with the 3 and 4. And for all that is good in the world, set up a decent play for late game situations. Did we not learn from the playoffs?

All I can say about this game

Is glad its not a playoff game. I don’t know how to explain missed FTs that would have sealed the W.
This team is still young and we forget that. Ty was not great either tonight, still not back from that ankle injury.
I should get really pissed, but what can you do we are a young team and gave the Grizz a chance when we shouldnt have.
Time to just chill I guess.

Let me get something straight

Gallo was off tonight; Rudy was 0-3 and barely played. Why in the world did he get that last shot?

by RoxWS2014 on Jan 31, 2012 9:52 PM MST reply actions

I would admittedly like to know that;

my first choice for that shot would have been Ty, and my second Buckets

by Chrysicat on Jan 31, 2012 9:54 PM MST up reply actions

i didn't watch any replays

but i doubt Rudy was the first option. i’m guessing Buckets was the plan, but he couldn’t get open. If not buckets, then who else for the 3? AAA, Corey (who did actually make one), Rudy, or Dre. The 3 was not good for Denver tonight outside of Al.

Coaches can draw up the play however they want

In the end you only have so many seconds to throw the ball in and find someone open.

I don’t care who you are, you got to try for a shot if it is in your hands with the clock running down.

That play was not drawn up for Rudy.

I’ve come to the reazation that Karl will always use small ball in cruch time. I can sit here at bitch all I want, but the man is stubborn as hell. He might have over a thousand wins, but how many titles does he have? 0!!!!!

there are many coaches w/ 0 titles

and yes, i agree, he will always use small ball. I think just as much as he wants a title, he wants to prove to the NBA that small ball can succeed.

by nugz4rollz on Jan 31, 2012 9:59 PM MST up reply actions

It will work

But we have to ride while its working and adjust when it isnt. We cant just stick with it bc GK has something to prove

by eddiebuckets on Jan 31, 2012 10:01 PM MST up reply actions

He needs to adjust

There are times small ball can work, but when the other team is consistently getting to the basket time and time again, because the team doesn’t have any shot blockers in—there is something terribly, terribly wrong.

Fair point

I just don’t think small ball can work in the playoffs. I hope he can prove me wrong, but I highly doubt it.

You can't go entirely small I agree

Need to have a shot blocking, rebounding, defensive presence. We don’t currently have that. Biggest flaw of the team. Even bigger then the lack of a go to scorer, which can be compensated imo… masked, with the depth of the team.

Sometimes I think...

The Nuggets are just trolling their fanbase. Like they have a minimum quota of double digit second half leads that they must have each season…

If they're going to fly under the radar

Can they just lose by 20, instead of these heartbreaking losses? I’m more afraid that we’re a team that will be caught in good team mode.

I love Mozgov hence my screen name but Karl will never play him. Maybe we need to look for a center in the trade market perhaps?

Ummm...

…this is perhaps the stupidest night to say that all year.

Moz didn’t sit this game because he was violating some unwritten rule GK wouldn’t ever let anyone including him know about—he sat this game because he picked up 3 fouls in 6 minutes in the first half, then another 3 in 4 minutes in the second.

What did you want him to do, go back in for 30 seconds in crunch-time, during which he picked up #6?

by Chrysicat on Jan 31, 2012 10:04 PM MST up reply actions

The rest of the season

I don’t like the term stupid getting thrown around. I was trying to say that Moz doesn’t even get 30 minutes of playing time in any game. I’m talking about going forward. Moz has had some nice games and GK just pulls him out. Maybe if we get an established center, GK will play that center instead of going small

Marc Gasol PLAYED 50 MINUTES TONIGHT!

MOZGOV = 10 min.
KOUFOS = 12 min.
NENE = 33 min.
Harrington = 38 min.

Think it’s time to go ahead and admit that Nene was no more a Power Forward on this team tonight than Harrington is a Power Forward in real life.

These lineups are fucking retarded. I’d rather lose playing with a traditional lineup using our Centers as Centers and Nene at powerforward than win with goofy all guard lineups in the reg. season and live in perpetual playoff hell.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
