Clippers vs. Nuggets: Lob City meets Team City (6pm MST)

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets, Jan 29, 2012 6:00 PM MST

The Los Angeles Clippers come to town as another "star" aligned team - a product of blockbuster trade of their own. This is another example of the "star" system versus the "team" concept represented by our Denver Nuggets...

...or is it?

Star-divide

Game: 20

Records:
Denver:
14-5 (7-2 at home)
Streak: Won 6
Los Angeles Clippers: 10-6 (1-4 on the road)
Streak: Won 1

Injuries:
Denver
: Ty Lawson (left ankle sprain) game time decision. DeMarre Carroll (left hamstring strain) is also day-to-day and a game-time decision.
Clippers: None

Television: Altitude TV

Season Series: 0-0

Opposition's Take: Clips Nation

It's amazing what some time to reflect about the stint Chauncey Billups had his second time with the Nuggets. The new "shooting guard" for the Clippers is our erstwhile point guard and team leader. Going to be strange watching CB in another uniform, and even stranger seeing him heave up those three point shots in transition as an an off guard. Yet, my thoughts drifted from Chauncey to another subject that has to do with the formation of "super teams".

I suppose the Clippers can fall in to that category with the recent acquisition of Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets. This trade has married professionally future star (and car-hood jumper) Blake Griffin and Denver Stiffs' favorite DeAndre Jordan with one of the most dynamic floppers ... I mean, point guards in the league. Does this qualify as a "super team" yet? Don't think they are as of yet. The Clippers roster, while talented needs some seasoning, and their early schedule has been sparse (they have played the least games in the league) and filled with home dates at the Staples Center. And yet, they are only 10-6. This is definitely a work-in-progress, but you can see the potential for quite a team there.

It's a curious thing, this concept of "team". I think the National media may be doing a disservice to several players on the Nuggets because of they can't seem to bring themselves to acknowledge the potential star quality of a couple Nuggets (more on that below). As for the Clippers, this could be a game that poses some interesting challenges for the Nuggets that they haven't really faced this season other than maybe against the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this season. That issue is a dynamic front court that can match the Nuggets in size and athleticism.

Both DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin are quick, athletic, and can rebound. The Jordan vs. Timofey Mozgov matchup will be an interesting one. Jordan has long arms and can dunk on just about anyone, and Moz can hold his ground and protect the paint (he has done serviceable jobs on Andrew Bynum in both Lakers matchups). Last year Jordan ate up Nene Hilario in a couple contests so it will be nice to see a different sort of take.

Griffin vs. Nene is interesting. Griffin wants to face you up and penetrate. Nene likes to get the ball on the left block and use his quickness to get to the rim. I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see these two face up. Last season Nene was left guarding Chris Kaman and Jordan one on one and Kenyon Martin took the Griffin responsibilities. I am curious to see how Nene steps up to the challenge.

That's what interests me the most. I have seen several Clippers games so far this season (when was the last time someone outside of LA could say that?) and I just want to see how these teams match up. Considering the Nuggets will be facing the Clippers again in LA a couple days later, this should make for an interesting game.

Nuggets of Wisdom

Ty Lawson may be back for tonight's contest. If there was anything that was painfully clear in the Nuggets victory of the Toronto Raptors on Friday, it was the pace of the game slowed considerably when Ty was out. They seem to need and thrive on that change of pace, and as much as I've grown to like Rudy Fernandez it's best that his ball handling and passing be utilized in more of a surprise role than a consistent back-up.

If Ty is able to go tonight, it would mark the first time the Nuggets have been completely healthy in quite awhile. It's good to see a full squad out there and I have a feeling the Nuggets will be needing it against a rested Clippers team (last game they played was on Thursday). Al Harrington will need to have a better game than he did against the Raptors, and Arron Afflalo needs to continue to get better on that groin and find a way to produce at a better rate. My disappointment so far in AAA is growing by the day. He needs to reaffirm why Nuggets fans love him

As for super teams and stars, remember, we WANT to have stars on our team. There is a very good reason Danilo Gallinari and Ty Lawson are featured on every Nuggets billboard in town. The team believes these two can become our next stars and take the team in to the future. So while preaching the virtues of "team", maybe the media and many Nuggets fans should look at our own players and understand they can and SHOULD be "stars". For those that doubt Gallo, I invite you to remember the last five minutes of the Raptors game on Friday. A clearly frustrated and ticked off Gallo took over the game on many different levels. Penetrating the lane with fury and drawing fouls. Tightening up defensive rotations, and collecting several rebounds with authority. Those are things a "star" does right? Lets preach the virtues of team, and lets also understand that we may have a couple stars on our team right now.

Mistake Tradition: Boy, that Mark Jackson sure is a great point guard for the Clippers.

Gonna be a good game..

Think both teams are going to be up for this one. If the Nuggets play hard they win. They are hard to beat at home. Biggest key is CP3. Nuggets can’t let him control the pace. If the game gets ugly and slow, Clippers have a good chance.

Bring it Nuggets, play hard and play fast. Clippers are NOT good defensively.

Lawson vs Paul

I hope Ty can go tonight. He frustrates Paul with his speed.

Also looking forward to seeing this athletic LA team against the Nuggets, a unique challenge vs a sure playoff team.

I want AAA and Ty to sit if they are not healthy, rather than risking re-injury

As for tactics, I would try to get Jordan into foul trouble early using Moz and K2 to challenge him on the low post. That would soften up the middle for Gallo and Ty (if he plays) to attack. I say Nuggets win in a good game tonight.

If Gallo keeps it up, he’ll be recognized as the star he is sooner or later. But he won’t score 25 ppg – this team doesn’t need it, and he cares about the team. More or less the same is true of Ty, so I still think we will make a deep run without a single player averaging 20ppg. I’ll take six guys averaging double figures any day.

AHHH YESSS

Big Blazer fan here, but the Nuggets are my second favorite team (makes no sense, I know). I always root for Denver, unless they play us.

That said, the Andre Miller/Blake Griffin video is one of my all-time favorites. Here’s hoping for a 20 point victory tonight.

I'm with you cubs0505

I was actually at that particular game and although I remember Griffin falling I missed the wind up (as did the refs) … I don’t usually condone that sort of behaviour but Dre was always calm and it was nice to see him get fired about something, plus every man has his breaking point and Griffin went well over that.

But Nuggets have become my second favorite team … even though I get flack because of the division rivals thing. They really play as a team and seem to be bunch of good guys that really know how to put the team first. I’m going to the game of February 4th because my 4 year old son is still bummed we don’t have Rudy anymore!

The guy who's been really deadly lately for the Clip

Has been Mo Williams. In last five games averaging 22 pts and 55% on 3s. Hopefully our perimeter defenders will put a damper on Mo.

I love the Lawson-Paul matchup. It’s a shame Ty is not Full Power. But Ty has shown an ability to do damage even when playing hurt.

This game is just full of poignancy with the return of Chauncey.

I would love to see these too playing together again. And as Sota won´t trade Ricky, do you think Denver will let Rudy fly?

the most interesting game of this season for the Nuggets. It was ormerly the game against the 6ers.

for what its worth

When Clips played Knicks at garden last year, both Jordan and Moz had lots of lob dunks. Neither played particularly good defense against each other.

I think Kmart goes to Lakers or Miami.

JR idk he is a wild card. He will sign with a contender right before the playoff eligibility deadline. If I could guess I would say either Lakers or Chicago. Both of these guys could be called upon depending on injury. If Richard Hamilton were to get hurt JR and D Rose would be a deadly backcourt.

by JR15 on Jan 29, 2012 4:12 PM MST up reply actions

Impossible!

The Bulls and the Heat have the last 2 MVPs so you know they’ll never miss 4 FTs in crunch time, no way that Rose will also choke on a last seconds field goal.

Cant happen to those teams with all their star power. NBA.com, ESPN says you must have stars at crunch time cause they will make those clutch shots….uh…until they dont.

What if a couple of Nuggets choked like James and Rose choked. What would be the headline?

Best, stats on star success in crunch time pegs success rates at between 40 – 33%, well below what you would get from playing team ball. Take that to the bank.

Why isn't it game time yet?!

Should be a good test of this Nuggets squad. Clippers haven’t played well on the road, but they’ll be up for this one for many reasons, not the least of which is Billups’s return. Can Nene stay out of foul trouble guarding Griffin? Will Butler be able to play effective lock-down defense on Gallo? Can Ty go? And if not, can Miller keep up with Paul and get some decent help? Is Afflalo ready for more minutes so he can shut down both Chauncey and the red-hot Mo Williams? Can Mozgov play Jordan to a draw? And will George Karl go with his bigs most of the game to keep Jordan from receiving the ball above the rim with ease? Who will shine off the bench for Denver?

Guess that’s why they play the game. GO NUGGETS!

Or do if you want. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

I have to travel to see the Nuggets. Portland is closest to where I live in Washington. Went to the game we lost on December 29. Blazers fans are among the best. An old man (older than even me) figured out pretty quickly that I was the enemy (I wasn’t flaunting it), and he was still fairly friendly. After we got way down and then came back strong in the second quarter, I turned to him and talked about how relentless the Nuggets offense was, and he took it in stride. He had the last laugh that night.

After the Sonics moved to OKC

I had a tough choice. I went with the Nuggets rather than the Blazers. Sometimes you don’t pick the team; the team picks you. That’s sort of what happened with the Nuggets. Plus, I’ve long followed Coach Karl.

Used to also wish the Thunder well until Westbrook proved to be a major PRICK. Perkins sealed the deal.

6 hour match nearly.

I kept falling asleep, and then I would hear the crowd go crazy and wake up. I finally woke up totally at like 4 am and watched the last 2 sets

So to quote Rober Flores

Does Wayne Brady have to Djokovic?

North Carolina was the first place in the U.S. that gold was discovered.
David Thompson then moved to Denver and played for the Nuggets.

I have no idea what that means

A play on a skit on The Chapelle Show when Wayne Brady was the host.

David Thompson then moved to Denver and played for the Nuggets.

Yes, no way they keep up with his speed.

They have Bledsoe but I think he is hurt

Cant remember if he is speedy or not

Bledsoe is one of the 3-4 guys who can keep up with Lawson

Not as talented, but he is quick.

I think we need to stay committed to our transition D

Our passing has been good, but we need to go inside some more to pull the defenders off our perimeter shooters.

Man this team would be so screwed without Miller

What a luxury it is to have a Top 12 PG fill in when Lawson can’t go. Miller went 5-9, 12 PTS, 4 Ast, 2 REB in 15:45 MIN. It was really 5-7 because of two last Q heaves. Man is smart and efficient. Did the Blazers ever get PAWNED on draft day

Henne is the greatest and the Dolphins will go 14-2 this year and win the SB

Nene was nice & efficient as well

5-7, 10 PTS, 6 REB, 19:51 MIN

It would be nice to see him get a double double tonight

I have a feeling Miller might resign

If the team is winning and he’s a big part of that. What Miller said earlier was just classic competative chip-on-his-shoulder speak. Glad he still has the fire to want to start. Winning cures a lot of ills though, and I think he might resign.

So is it 53-48 or 53-51?

Both ESPN and Yahoo (and Denver Stiffs) were/are showing conflicting box scores. ESPN was at 53-51 and changed it to 53-48. Not being local, I can’t confirm by actually watching the game.

It will be 48

Paul’s three was clearly after the buzzer

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
