Lawson injury means opportunity for Stone

Julyan Stone stood out while at UTEP and he's earned a spot to shine for the Nuggets.

Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson has joined the ranks of the walking wounded in Denver. As the team gets set to face the 6-13 Toronto Raptors tonight, Denver could be without two starters, one key bench member, and a reserve. What should George Karl do with his rotations?

Star-divide

Take a look at the Nuggets injury list:

ARRON AFLALO – Right groin strain. Day-to-day. Doubtful for tomorrow vs. TOR.

DeMARRE CARROLL – Left hamstring strain. Day-today. Game-time decision.

RUDY FERNANDEZ – Right Achilles tendon strain. Dayto-day. Game-time decision.

TY LAWSON – Left ankle sprain. Day-to-day. Doubtful for tomorrow vs. TOR.

Afflalo has missed the past two games,. Carroll hasn't seen game action for the past eight contests. Fernandez suffered his injury Jan. 15th against the Utah Jazz, missed the following two games, came back and played just 12 minutes against the Wizards on Jan. 20th, and has now missed two more games. And now Lawson looks to perhaps miss his second game of the season, after sitting out the Jan. 11th contest against the Nets.

Injuries can be a bad thing and if none are too serious, they can sometimes be a good thing too. The Nuggets need to get some of their reserves important minutes and some of their key players more minutes as well. These injuries will allow Karl to tinker even more with his lineups and hopefully find some combinations that can work at various times during this fast-paced season.

Against the Kings, the Nuggets emptied their bench and Karl played all three Nuggets rookies. It's sort of crazy to think that the Nuggets have three rookies on the young roster. Jordan Hamilton, Kenneth Faried, and Julyan Stone all saw a little action against the Kings.

Stone, who played 20 minutes in Sacramento, will benefit the most if Lawson sits out tonight. With Fernandez also out, Karl will have no choice other than to turn the backup point guard duties over to the rookie out of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Stone has appeared in three games this season. Back on Jan. 11th Karl had an opportunity to use Stone a bit as the backup point guard as Lawson sat out. The Rook only played 6 minutes as Karl leaned Andre Miller for 38 minutes and Fernandez for 28 minutes for his point guard minutes, in what turned out to be a closer than comfortable game against the now 6-13 squad from Jersey.

But tonight could be different. If Lawson is unable to go, we should get an extended look at the kid out of UTEP. Stone was an undrafted rookie and I've liked what we've seen out of him thus far. He gives tremendous effort on defense and has nice court vision for setting up his teammates.

I'm most interested to see what Stone will do with Miller on the bench. Against the Kings, he was passed the ball a of times right after he got it. But once the reserves all entered the game, Stone seemed more at ease and started running the show on the floor.

Who is Julyan Stone? Well, he's a former four-year collegiate player who broke Tim Hardaway's assist record with the Miners, he's not known for being much of a scorer but more of a passer, a hard working defender, and a long point guard who goes 6'6''-6'7'' and 200 pounds ... consider that Afflalo goes 6'5'' and 215 pounds.

I pulled this from his Wikipedia page:

As a senior, Stone finished the season averaging 8.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. In an article about the Legends Classic, a regular season tournament that UTEP participated in, Sports Illustrated writer Seth Davis commented that, "I also liked what I saw out of 6-7 senior point guard Julyan Stone, though I'm mystified as to why he has not developed more of an offensive game. If he did, he'd be a surefire pro." On February 5, 2011, in a conference game against the Rice Owls, Stone recorded a career-high 23 points, making 7-9 shots and 9-10 free throws. After the game, Rice head coach Ben Braun said that his team, "let Stone get to the rim and he made big plays." In his final career game at UTEP, Stone recorded one assist, which brought his career total to 714, the most in UTEP and Conference USA history by a single player. He was later named to the Conference USA All-Defensive team for a second straight season, as well as the Conference USA All-Conference second team.

I'm excited to see what this rookie can do with another opportunity tonight.

I've seen your references to your illness in prior threads...

What’s ailing you? In any event, get better.

As for the game, it’s going to be important for us to get our home mojo back tonight against a mediocre team, or being a worse home team than road team issue will get in our fragile little heads and might become a problem.

undrafted

so I don’t watch college hoops and i’m pretty clueless when it comes to the draft. why does someone like Stone not get picked up if he has the potential that apparently the Nuggets see?

No doubt....

a 6’7" point guard who sets a school record (said school with a decent basketball tradition) and is on all conference defensive teams, and he doesn’t get a sniff in the draft? He’s like the Nuggets version of Broncos CB Chris Harris.

Love Chris Harris! With only two rounds in the NBA draft, there is always an abundance of guys who go undrafted. But it really seems as though the Nuggets may have a diamond in the rough on their hands.

I just hope it works out better than Julius Hodge.

It’s just funny b/c Denver used a first-round pick on Hodge (an oversized point guard and a non-shooting shooting guard) and then let him basically walk. He put up nice numbers at NC State, but his game never translated to the League.

Our Australian contingency here talked about him playing down under and doing well though.

didn't we draft Jarrett Jack in that draft and trade him?

I would have had Jack than Hodge the way it turned out.

tall point guards are not ideal

Their height makes it take longer to dribble up and down and quicker point guards will never allow them to get a step on them making it hard to distribute the ball. The ideal size for a point guard nowadays is 6’1-6’3, any taller and they will be a step slow with the ball and too short and they’d have a hard time defending point guards a little taller. Lawson can get away with it because he is very athletic and fast and makes up for his mediocre man to man defense by being very good at playing the passing lanes and generating steals.

Lack of Scoring

Doesn’t like to score. Never really has. I grew up in the same county as he did and in high school he would get double doubles and triple doubles without points being there. He is someone who can grab 10 boards, dish 10 assists, and steal the ball a few times or get a few blocks, yet never attempt a shot. He has a decent 3 pt shot and can get to the rim, but thats about the extent of his scoring.

his college numbers weren’t that good against a not terribly tough schedule… he tended to defer a lot when NBA teams generally want to see prospects dominate especially against weak competition. The Nuggets like his distribution, but still, even guys like Jason Kidd or Rajon Rondo generally score a little bit in college. Stone’s college usage rate as a senior was 12.1, which is lower than Birdman’s. So the worry is no matter how well he can pass, teams won’t have to guard him.

i keep dancing on my own.

by atomiccafe on Jan 27, 2012 9:03 AM MST up reply actions

He was a senior

Averaging 8.5 pts and 5.3 dimes in a below average conference. NBA teams probably felt he reached his peak and those numbers aren’t very good for a guy with his size and athletic gifts. NBA draft is about potential and I doubt NBA teams much there.

Can’t teach size and speed though…so he is worth a flier. If Dre can teach him how to play the position, he could be good.

by Pusherman on Jan 27, 2012 9:04 AM MST up reply actions

worth a flyer is exactly right

the NBA as a whole (and probably other sports leagues) is way too reluctant to give chances to high performing undrafted FAs/D-League guys/good Euros who are trying to break in. How much worse can someone like Stone or whoever be than Mike Bibby? Or what does Bo McCalebb have to do to get a shot over someone like Steve Blake? And at least there’s upside with Stone, with Bibby not so much.

i keep dancing on my own.

by Pusherman on Jan 27, 2012 9:27 AM MST up reply actions

maybe Mike Bibby doesn't make mental mistakes

but he’s so slow and bad on defense that a young player would have to make quite a few mistakes to make him as bad an NBA player as Bibby. And again, with a younger guy you at least get the possibility of some potential.

Same with someone like Juwan Howard, who’s been outplayed by multiple D-League callups over the past two years (think Chris Johnson, Anthony Tolliver), and I think it’s just a massive oversight and overpreference for a known (crappy) quantity on the part of NBA front offices.

i keep dancing on my own.

The Stone kid intrigues me

Shades of, argh can’t remember, senior moment coming in …. one-two-three seconds…. what was the name of our guard during the 80s, super stopper from Alabama couldn’t shoot himself with a garden hose full of water…? ON the tip of my tongue. Help me Stiffs. Anyway, Stone can intimidate small point guards or switch to the 2 on D, pass, rebound, steal, and drive the hoop. We have lots of quality shooters. We don’t need another scorer. And in the NBA, scoring is the thing guys can develop later in their careers.

LHWYA

the definition you provide basically says that Julyan is a misspelling of Julian, as I said, and that it is very unpopular.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Jan 27, 2012 9:49 AM MST up reply actions

It doesn't say that at all.

If you look at the link above it says it’s one of 8 variant spellings. A variant spelling is not a misspelling. It may be uncommon and unpopular but it is still an accepted spelling of the name and not just something his parents made up.

picking an unusual variant is exactly the problem I was describing

Want to name your daughter Laura, spell it Laura. If you spell it Lhorah, everyone still thinks her name is Laura, except anytime anyone has to write it down, or the teacher has to attempt to pronounce it at the beginning of the year. Picking an uncommon variation to a common name is just as bad as making up a stupid name. It’s like that Vince Vaughn movie where they meet “Stanley with a C”.

Now you are coming around!

I just think parents need to think about what they are doing to their children when they name them. You aren’t doing your child any favors giving them a name that no one can spell or that will get them beaten up in school. If you name your kid Brock, you have to know that “Broccoli” is going to be next to “Crap” getting beat up on the playground.

The variation isn't as bad

it’s just stupid to claim that your child is somehow unique because they are “Khameron” instead of “Cameron” and now have to explain the spelling of their name the rest of their lives. Naming your child Sarah doesn’t make her name unique, no matter how many C’s you insert into it.

because it seems that

everyone I know is intentionally misspelling their children’s names to make them “unique”. Perhaps this isn’t why Stone’s parents chose to misspell his name. France passed a law in the early 1800s that prohibited all names except those on a preapproved list; the last of these laws was repealed in 1993. In Germany, the government still bans invented names and names that don’t clearly designate a child’s sex. Sweden and Denmark forbid names that officials think might subject a child to ridicule. Swedish authorities have rejected such names as Veranda, Ikea and Metallica.

You can try to go safe and name them Jennifer and then they might be mad at you because they have 12 other Jennifers her year when she gets to highschool. My GF's name is Katherine...

she went by Katie when she was little, but she never liked how common it was, and she thinks Katherine sounds too stuffy and European (she identifies pretty strongly with the Mexican side of her family) One of her high school friends decided to start calling her “Reenie” so there would be a nickname that was based off the second part of her name. And now that’s what she always goes by.

My daughter has about 43 classmates named Kylie or Kayla

My wife and I went old school with “Margaret” since everyone knows how to spell it, it has a million different nicknames associated with it so the best nickname that fits her personality can come to the fore, and there aren’t many Margaret’s anymore.

I’m with TIDBMTID on this debate. Our nieces are Kymberlei and Kristynna (pronounced Kimberly and Christina) and we just shook our heads when those names were announced (they are awfully cute though).

I really liked what I saw on Wednesday night.

He made a couple of passes where it looked like his teammates weren’t ready for the pass, else his assist line would have looked better. I really liked his defensive intensity, and ability – for the most part – to stay in front of a very quick guard in Isaiah Thomas.

Off-topic: GK rotations with injuries

Andre is an ironman and can play 35 minutes of PG. That leaves 13 for Stone.
Corey Brewer will play 25 minutes at SG. That leaves 10 for Stone and 8 for Hamilton.
Gallo can play all 48 minutes at small forward. But he’ll go for 35 and Al will play 13.
Nene will play 10 minutes at power forward and Al will play 20 and Bird and K2 will get about 10 each.
Moz will get 10 minutes at Center, Nene will get 25 and Bird and K2 will get about four each.

That’s how I’d do it. Really thin on the wing. And I’m joking about Moz only playing 10 minutes. I think hell get close to 20-25 now that he is emerging somewhat.

I just wish I could trust Aron

Who remembers how many times he re-injured that hammy last year?

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 27, 2012 11:13 AM MST up reply actions

Well he did it once

But it was annoying that he came back early. He said this time he is caring for his body more. He says the groin doesn’t hurt as much as the hammy and he took extra rest to be sure.
But you can take Friday off, we need AAA vs. the Clippers more.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

Damn it!!!!

Why does he have to do it against the Raptors, this is a game where people can rest.
Kinda funny getting mad over a player returning to a game…funny what these new Nuggets have done to me.

I don't think anybody will complain

if AAA takes extra time to make sure he’s healthy, especially when we’ve got the depth to cover him.

We saw what happened when he came back too soon last year. We might have beaten the Thunder with him.

limited minutes at 80%?

I wouldn’t mind AAA shaking off the rust a little tonight IF he can play scaled down a little with limited minutes. I would be more concerned if he came out cold against CP3 or Mo and went full out and re-injured himself that way.

Mmmm, cheesecake

My womanfriend often makes food for an old friend of ours who’s allergic to cow’s milk, and gluten intolerant, too. We’re fortunate to live close to someone with goats, so Melinda sometimes makes Wendy a cheesecake with goat cheese (chevre, like cream cheese) and a spelt crust. HOLY SHIT is it good, some of the best cheesecake ever!

But I love me some chocolate cake, especially if it’s made with heavy, truffle-like chocolate.

but you should try to make chocolate bean cake. its essentially like chocolate cake except you use black beans in it. i know it sounds really weird, but if made correctly, it is just as good as regular chocolate cake and is a hell of a lot healthier

UTEP fan here from MinerRush...

Hope Denver is taking good care of Julyan and I don’t think he could have landed in a better organization. Stone is really a class act and was absolutely vital to the resurgence of UTEP Basketball. Whenever we would go on the road to play and we’d have to listen to the opponents announcers, they’d usually say it was ‘Unfair for a 6’7 guy to play PG.’ He would absolutely shut down the opponents leading scorer. His game took a massive step forward when Floyd got here.

My only gripe about him, and he would even mention it, was his ugly, just ugly, jump shot.

Take it easy.

Ugly jump shot not a problem

In Denver, the plan is to keep passing until you find someone open under the hoop.

And we haven’t seen a lot of Stone yet, but it sure looks to me that the kid can pass.

Thanks for the word on Stone

Hoping for very good to great things from him with the Nuggets. His potential as an NBA PG is plain as day. Must say, however, that thus far I haven’t seen what others claim they see in his little court time this season. He looks really tentative and prone to mistakes, along with an apparent compulsion to defer that manifests in passing the ball the second it touches his hands.

But so what? He’s gotten so few opportunities to get the least bit comfortable. Here’s hoping tonight brings him some valuable minutes, mistakes or not.

No. More. Stickyball.

To cut him some slack, I don’t think he was trying to be fancy. I think he was initially going up for a dunk, then decided he was too far out and wasn’t going to make it, so had to switch to the layup. Did others see it that way, or did you think he was trying to hot dog it?

A couple of things strangely on-topic

My middle name is Scot, with one ‘t’ and not because my parents were pretentious. Rather, I was born abroad in an army hospital, and for some reason, it was recorded that way on the birth report. We [my family] didn’t even know it until I turned 16 and went to get my driver’s license.

I think Anderson with his colorful tattoos would actually look cool in a Clippers Jersey.

Honestly, I’m just trying to see if we can trade Bird for a 2nd round pick from the Clips.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/21 by Jeff Morton)

1. OFFICIALS AT THE NUGGETS VS T-WOLVES GAME
In a short time frame the Nuggets went from up 9 points, to trailing by 3 points largely due to strange and downright erroneous calls from officials. Included in their greatest hits? Corey Brewer getting blocked out into the first row and somehow getting a foul called on him. Andre Millerbeing ejected for arguing a call where he was pummeled by Martell Webster and drew an offensive foul. Also, Luke Ridnour falling on his face and somehow drawing a foul. Nice going refs.

2. GEORGE KARL'S END OF GAME COACHING
In a very winnable game against the Thunder, your coach of the Nuggets decided to burn his two oldest players (Al Harringtonand Andre Miller) from the 8 minute mark of the third quarter, through the end of the game. Leaving them dead legged for overtime. Also, not subbing in defensive rebounders for Durant's last couple shots of regulation was a bit of a blunder. Gotta get better coach!

3. ROYCE YOUNG
Reading this article on CBSSports.com makes me wonder if good old Royce is secretly a Thunder fan ... oh wait. He also writes for Daily Thunder, the Oklahoma City Thunder's biggest blog. Go figure!! Listen Royce, dismissing that the Nuggets were down their two best players, and then using this game to prove a point about the Nuggets is a bit ... I dunno ... "salty". Don't you agree?

4. THE "INJURED ANKLE LEPRECHAUN"
What is the appropriate sacrifice we need to beseech this malevolent leprechaun who has cursed the Nuggets. Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo both injured their ankles on Monday night. In addition to Danilo Gallinari being out with a severe ankle sprain and Timofey Mozgov just coming back from one himself. Listen, if you need me to get a goat I will.

5. FEBRUARY
Seriously? Can we be done with this month already? Time for March. Green beer and an incredibly easy Nuggets schedule. Can't get here soon enough.
