The Nuggets five-game road trip comes to an end this evening in Sacramento. Yes, the four-game East Coast trip included a couple days off in Denver, but the team wont play in the friendly confines of the Pepsi Center again until they complete tonight's game at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento. This will be the first time the Nuggs face the Kings since they fired head coach Paul Westphal.
Game: 18
Records:
Denver: 12-5 (6-3 on the road)
Streak: Won 4
Sacramento: 6-12 (4-3 at home)
Streak: Lost 2
Injuries:
Denver: Rudy Fernandez (right Achilles strain) and Arron Afflalo (groin strain) are out. DeMarre Carroll (left hamstring strain) day-to-day, game-time decision.
Sacramento: Marcus Thornton (left thigh contusion) is day-to-day. Chuck Hayes (dislocated left shoulder) is out.Television: Altitude TV

Opposition's Take: SacTown Royalty
After the Nuggets defeated the Kings 110-83 on Jan. 4th, the powers that be in Sacramento finally fired coach Westphal. The reason I say finally is because in the NBA, it's a players league. It was no secret that DeMarcus Cousins, the 5th overall pick in the 2010 draft, was going to remain on the team over Westphal. Coaches come and go in the NBA, players with heavy investments stay.
The day after losing to the Nuggets, the Kings went out and defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 103-100. Cousins and Company showed fight in that game, fight that they hadn't shown since defeating the Los Angeles Lakers in their opener (100-91) and turning some heads along the way.
Cousins and Westphal had their differences, very public differences. Shortly after losing to the New York Knicks on December 31st, Cousins and Westphal had a dispute which led to Westphal releasing this statement:
"DeMarcus Cousins has demanded to be traded. In the best interest of our team as we go forward, he has been directed by me, with the support of management, to stay home from the New Orleans game tonight." Westphal said. -Full story here.
Well, Cousins was welcomed back after sitting out that Hornets game on Jan. 3, where he came off the bench against the Memphis Grizzlies instead of assuming his starting role. And then on Jan. 4th, Cousins again came off the bench against the Nuggets and put up 26 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes. The game wasn't close, yet Cousins remained on the floor during garbage time. Westphal was trying to send a message to his young big man. But the real message was delivered to Westphal after that game, in the form of a pink slip.
The fight the Kings showed against the Bucks the day Westphal was fired was apparent as they climbed back from a 21-point deficit to get the win for new head coach Keith Smart. After the win, Cousins showed a public display of joy for his new coach:
As the buzzer sounded and the home crowd roared, DeMarcus Cousins sought out Keith Smart and bear-hugged the new Sacramento Kings coach in a warm embrace.
"You just felt free out there," Cousins said. "You didn't feel like you had like 30-pound bags on your back. You just felt free. It felt good to be out there." -Full story here.
The lesson learned by Cousins? Continue to whine and cry and baby will get his bottle.
The 6'11'' and 270 pound Cousins is extremely talented. He can play with his back to the basket, can be a pest on the boards (when he feels like it), has the size to defend the biggest centers, and can hit jumpers out to 18-feet.
Since Smart took over as coach, he has re-inserted Cousins to the starting lineup where DeMarcus is averaging 15 points and 11.5 rebounds in 11 games (since that Nuggets game). He has recorded double-digit rebounds in nine of those 11 games, and two 19 rebound games, to boot.
But Cousins' improved play hasn't resulted in a major way in the win/loss column. Since Westphal was let go, the Kings have gone 4-7 under Smart.
Timofey Mozgov will have a big challenge on his hands. The Nuggets haven't seen a talented offensive big man since facing Al Jefferson and the Utah Jazz on January 15th. Cousins presents a unique challenge for the Denver defense and the Kings should be motivated at home.
The Nuggets have a shot to go 5-0 on this East/West Coast road-trip before they return home for a couple contests. Denver will again be without Arron Afflalo and Rudy Fernandez, so it'll be interesting to see if George Karl again used a seven-man rotation or what he will do with his minutes.
Can the Nuggets run the Kings out of their own building? We'll find out later this evening ...

- Consistency. That's what Mozgov needs to find. He has shown some scoring pop this season and now must learn how to become a consistent offensive threat. The Moz scored a season high 16 points against the Knicks, but it wasn't his career high. Mozgov put up a career-high 23 points (to go along with 14 rebounds) against the Detroit Pistons on Jan. 30th, 2011 when he was a member of the Knicks. Moz also put up 18 points as a member of the Knicks on February 9th, 2011. As a Nugget, his high is 16 points.
- On the four-game East Coast swing, Al Harrington averaged 20.2 points while shooting 50% from the field (30-60) including 48.3% from deep (15-31), oh and he averaged 7.7 rebounds too.
- On the four-game East Coast swing, Ty Lawson averaged 7.2 assists and Andre Miller 9.5 assists.

Sac’ers dont have a whole lot of wins but their talent level is high with Cousins, Evans (love that guy), Thornton. A good coach and maybe another good role player could make Kings a very tough team.
BTW, Jimmer is slow developing his confidence, does not really help Kings win any games but, concerns that he would not get shots off in the NBA, and will be torched on defense, are just plain wrong and Jimmer can develop into a lethal scorer – hopefully not starting tonight.

the Nugs have historically stunk it up pretty bad when playing in Sacto. I am bracing myself for a major buzzkill after that 4-0 streak last week.

..Hickson is creating that smaller role. Of all the guys hurt by Chuck Hayes being out, it’s Hickson. He really benefitted from Hayes’ defensive communication as well as the physical presence Hayes provided. It allowed Hickson to fly around a lot more.
The more minutes the Chuckwagon gets, the better Hickson will get IMO.

Gallo Extension
Hochman is reporting that Nugs are close to signing Gallinari to a 4 year extension worth around $40 million. I think that would be a great deal for the team as they would retain a lot of financial flexibility.

Not too bad.
A little rich for my tastes but considering it’s only a little worse than AAA’s deal and Gallo’s outperforming AAA by a wide margin, I can live with it.
The important thing is not hamstringing ourself for the future. Ty still needs to be extended and we need to have some flexibility in the event that we’re missing a mid-level type piece or something.

I am willing to bet dollars to donuts it’s not only going to be about Melo leaving but about the process of rebuilding a team after a big trade and how they do throughout the season. It might be a spin of how does a team do without a “superstar”.

I could watch Basketball Wives or KUWTK. I’m more interested in the on the court stuff at the moment. Maybe I’ll come back and watch it in the offseason but if I had to choose between the Sac game and “The Association”, the game wins everytime.

And for out of towners like me, this is especially great because unlike you Denverites, I never get to see the local coverage of Nugget performance and stories on players. All I get is nada about Denver from local media and close to nada from national media.

Told by Houston that their options would not be picked up. Possibly Jordan Hill as well.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind picking up Flynn to replace ‘Dre next season as Ty’s backup and Terrence Willams has always struck me as a J.R. Smith type player who just has attitude problems. Has the physical tools and basketball skills to really be a strong player, I’d take him over Brewer/Fernandez, as well as they’ve played this season.

absolutely has the potential to be an elite backup point-guard in the league. He could continue Felton and Miller’s legacy.
He might have a lot to work on in his shooting game, but he has a very high court vision, he isn’t too tall for a point guard either.

Karl hates rookies no matter how good they are unless they are from UNC
It took Linas a while to crack the rotation during a normal season. We only saw Kleiza’s emergence in his second year, and to no surprise he is declining in Toronto with a not so great coaching staff.
I think he played Forbes out of necessity, yet another smart pickup by scammaster Ujiri. I think Stone does have a ways to go, but he will be better than Flynn any day of the week.

I haven't advocated playing time for Faried all season
but this is the game where I could see him being used. I also wouldn’t mind seeing J. Stone play as well, as we have seen what he can do in productive minutes against scrubs. I also think we will see plenty of Kou Kou as well.
I also have a funny feeling that Karl is going to see if the deeper end of his rotation will win this game in return for some much needed rest for the more important pieces of our team, but knowing Karl, that might not happen.

Karl played 7 against the Knicks with two OTs.
A) what was with Bird not playing? Of course, I can guess…
B) really, 7 guys thru 58 minutes!!!!???
I know some of the first-off-the-bench guys were day-to-day, but COME ON!
Overcoming the Letdown Game..
Hope the emotional bump from the Gallo signing will impact the Nuggets in a good way. The last 3 games (at least) the Nuggets have been getting behind in the 1st half. Would like to see the team smack someone in the mouth first and not let the shooters get going.
Hope the rest got Ty’s battery recharged. Our PG advantage should be on display in the next 2 games. Sounds like AAA and Rudy will be a no go, but the Kings may be missing Thornton and Hayes. So the injuries should balance out.
5-0 road trip Nuggets sounds great. Get it.

its only 1.2 million in the red
the money we get from being under the tax will easily cover that. We are also in the top 5 in smallest debt percentage, all of which is tied up in Pepsi Center and its almost fully paid off. The value of the franchise has also gone up about 115 million since Kronke bought it.

good thing we’re 12-5 right now, eh? Obviously mentioning Melo in the first two episodes, then they can move on. I think Masai may lull other GM’s to sleep with his speaking style and gets them to give up whatever he wants while they are half dozed off ;) Ujiri is the man, and how can you not love the philosophy of Coach Karl from the basketball purist view, its the execution of that idea in this day and age that is the most difficult and with what he has the most issues. Also, if the biggest thing we have to worry about is about nagging injuries and whether the rookies are playing or not, I think we are in good shape.
So I doubt this will happen
but I’d like to see Brewer get the start at the 2. I just don’t think Ty or Dre can guard Evans effectively. He’s too fast for Dre and too big for Ty, and the last thing I wanna see is us losing this game because of 1 particular matchup. Evans can go off on any given night so let’s try to avoid tonight being one of them.

With AAA having nagging injuries. This is Exciting. Brewer is becoming one of my favorite Nuggets. He’s 2nd on the team in points per 36 minutes with 18.7/36 min. Gallo is 3rd with 18.3/36 min. Al is 1st with 21.9/36min.
Plus Brew is great on D. He’s a razor blade.

On fast breaks, but he should take the corner 3 and be like Bruce Bowen or Richard Jefferson.
He doesn’t need to dribble, we have enough kick out players to get him the ball wide open (Nene, Ty, and Gallo being the main ones).

I didn't like that first half
mainly because of Lawsons injury. I hope it is only day to day. Ankle sprains can go away in a day or two and sometimes they can linger for weeks.
