Nuggets at Knicks recap: Nuggets are victorious. Extend Gallo now!

In a game that was both infuriating and thrilling, both frustrating and exciting the Denver Nuggets defeat the New York Knicks 119-114 in double overtime.

Oh, and about a certain Italian...

Star-divide

Here is a stat line for you. 37 points and 11 rebounds. Would that impress you? This person was also 18 of 20 from the free throw line and took 19 shots to get his points. This was the stat line of one Danilo Gallinari. Who also did a pretty good job defending Carmelo Anthony who finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds on 30 shots (more on that later) and gave the Nuggets a huge offensive lift when they had no legs at the start of the game.

I'm done messing around. Extend Gallo now. Done ... there should be no hesitating or fidgeting of thumbs. He is a special talent with a high ceiling and if anyone at the Pepsi Center is reading this now, do us a favor and just extend Gallo to a nice (but not extreme) contract and lock this boy up for a long time. Done and done.

Aside from Gallo, you could tell this Nuggets team was dead tired. The team had to spend three hours at Dulles Airport in Washington DC waiting for a plane to be de-iced. The team arrived in New York at close to four in the morning. Many times the Nuggets were late getting over on rotations, leaving the likes of Bill Walker wide open to take uncontested shots (Walker finished with 15 points in 11 minutes) and letting Iman Shumpert penetrate the lane with impunity. This was a tough slog that the Nuggets could have very easily lost and given up on. They didnt.

-Andre Miller looked like he was fond of being thrust into the starting lineup (in place of Arron Afflalo who has a strained groin, and Rudy Fernandez who re-aggravated his Achilles tendon) but he really didn't get going effectively until the fourth quarter and overtime(s). Including a miracle, prayer, hail mary, whatever-you-call-it shot from 31 feet to beat the shot clock and tie the game. Dre finished with 14 points and 12 assists. Nice stat line Dre!

-Al Harrington started off very slowly. As if his shot was left behind in Washington. Yet, after he got over his initial struggles Big Al - once again - brought the hammer down a couple times with timely three point buckets and some nifty inside moves. Al seems to be really finding his groove lately and it's nice to see him in such a good place on this Nuggets team. That contract that Mark Warkentein signed him to isn't looking so bad right now. At least for this season. Big Al had 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Aside from that, no one on the Nuggets played less than 25 minutes tonight due to George Karl keeping an unusually short bench. Neither Kosta Koufos and Chris Andersen played tonight, and Timofey Mozgov played the most he has all season (30 minutes). He rewarded that time with 16 points and 7 rebounds and what I would describe as aggressive/angry play that we haven't seen from him all year. Ty Lawson still seems to be struggling a bit. While he had 10 points and 7 assists, he seemed off all night and was routinely out run by both Shumpert and Toney Douglas. Hopefully we can chalk this up to just being tired in general. Nene chipped in 12 points and 13 rebounds. He also seemed sluggish at the beginning but gained strength as the game went on. Also, how can we forget those two CLUTCH free throws at the end of the first overtime (after starting 0-4 from the foul line)? Amazing big man, remember what you did there and DO IT ALL THE TIME.

As for Melo. I have to say you saw the bad and the good from Melo tonight, which makes him the frustrating star that he is. For most of the game he was pedestrian at best. Missing shots. Lackluster defense. But in the fourth quarter and the first overtime, he was the clutch Melo that we saw so often in Denver. Hitting big shot after big shot. It was a trip to watch to be honest. As I said in the preview, I don't wish Melo any ill will at all, but I'm glad we have the players we have now. Exciting times in Denver, Colorado as our Nuggets have won 4 road games in a row (and in a 4 games in 5 nights stretch).

Additionally I'd like to thank Nate Timmons, Andrew Feinstein and everyone who came out to Jakes Food and Spirits for Stiffs Night Out tonight. It was great fun, the place was PACKED and we had three lucky winners for the ticket giveaway. Thanks to everyone who came out and made the event such a success. Heck, even my dad came out to watch the Nuggets win in double OT. Lets make the next Stiffs Night Out even better (although this one will be definitely hard to top).

Go Nuggets!!

That game damn near gave me a heart attack!

Wild, frustrating, entertaining; the game was all of that.

Going in, I though Gallinari may not show up, with the hype of it being his return to NY, but man, what a performance that kid gave tonight. I’m with you; extend him now!

What a game!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching it at Jake’s with a whole bunch of my fellow Stiffs. I wish I could have met more of you, but the vibe of all of us being together was pretty amazing anyways. Props to Andrew, Nate, and Jeff for organizing it.

Also, ’DRE!!!! for Trey!

I think it does for sheer absurdity.

I mean the ball was headed out of bounds. Not only does he save a bad pass but make a 3 from well beyond the 3pt line as time is running out. Brilliant

Bit funny that shorty afterwords he “measured” a more normal tre and clanked it.

I actually thought

first that he hadn’t gotten it off in time when he released, and when i saw it go in I thought he had stepped out of bounds. TWO things that easily could’ve gone wrong and instead he nails it and makes a huge impact on the outcome of that game. Like you said, brilliant.

Not unlike Chauncey, Dre can lull the defender and then burst past. He still has some quickness in the old legs. Also he’s one of the toughest dudes you’ll ever see. Durable.

Andre Miller is the Michael Jordan of guys you play YMCA ball with.

tricky, clever, rule breaker, sneaky.. I mean did you guys see him lunge his body into 6’10 Josh Harrellson on the jump ball right back to tip it to a Denver player? That is what Miller does best.

Gutty win..

Has a Nugget team ever gone 4-0 in 5 nights on the road? Don’t think so. Ty definitely looked tired. The Knicks should be kicking themselves, they let the Nuggets hang around and the Nuggets stole da chedda.

The Nuggets definitely could of played better, but like I have said.. any road win is a good win! Get some rest men. yeah earned. Hope the injuries are minor. AAA was definitely missed tonight.

That was the greatest game I've ever been to regardless of the sport

Gallo is so much better in person, for those who have not seen. In addition melo was silent most of the game (gallo shut him down, most of his points came after gallo was switched off him) and had 6 TO’s, oh yeah and the garden crowd kept booing him at various points of the game (when he took and missed bad shots)

The one shot Melo made in overtime was defended by Gallo

but Gallo made it really hard for him, he destroyed him in the foot work, and then extended his arm on the Melo fadeaway and made it as difficult of a shot as he could have, and it went in, but most of the game he was destroying Melo in terms of defensive footwork, playing chess with him like a master. After rewatching their last scoring duel when Melo scored 50 Gallo was just a clumsy, passive defender and Melo was eating him up. I attribute a lot of his defense to George Karl.

by LongWindedHank on Jan 22, 2012 2:10 PM MST up reply actions

I'm a George Karl supporter

Do I think he is the best coach in the NBA? No, but I do know that his teams have always been great at high octane offense and defense that is efficient for the fast pace.

Also, if we fired him, there is no one who could be better than George Karl right now.. a few of the coaches in the NBA right now wouldn’t even be able to coach for a contender in the NIT tournament. Karl’s resume speaks for itself, his Sonic teams in the 90’s were really good, he just isn’t very good with adjustments. I honestly think that they could of won or at least made it seven games against the Chicago Bulls in that 90’s finals if he only had Gary Payton defend Michael Jordan from the start of the series, which he didn’t until the 4th game when they won two games in a row, but it was too late to mount a comeback in the series for them to make a comeback. George Karl’s practice and training is very solid though and his offense is the most efficient in the NBA, and most coaches will agree with me on that.

Warriors, Sonics, Bucks, Nuggets

I’ve watched George for a long time, too. I moved to Seattle in 1995, which was a mighty fun time to become a Sonics fan. I won’t go too deep here about the man’s coaching and its discontents. My comment was simply a sarcastic way of noting how rarely we see outright praise for the Nuggets coach here on this site.

I’ve become very critical of him, as well. This year’s play has left me wondering about George’s commitment to his half-court offense’s effectiveness. I cannot see how it makes much sense. Please help me out here from time to time as you see things you appreciate about this team’s offensive design and execution. I’m far from the most informed fan.

ridiculous?

He had to take 30 shots to score 25 points!

Yeah great wins in different ways. Fighting through shorthanded when a lot of guys didn’t have their A-games, vs. firing on all cylinders against a talented opponent that was also working. You’ve got to have both kinds of wins and a lot of blowouts to get a nice playoff seed. I’m not picky :)

Amar'e needs a good point guard for him to get his points

Felton was able to get him the ball a lot because Felton was a good distributor, he also got a lot of points playing with Nash. They have no point guard there though. I don’t know why they got Melo and didn’t wait for an all-star point guard to come on the market. Their GM and management is pretty bad.

Special mention in the Denver Post article: http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_19792360

Back in Denver, his old fans weren’t so happy to see him. At Jake’s Food & Spirits, where a couple Nuggets fan-bloggers held a watch party, Nate Timmons announced to the crowd before tipoff — “Go Nuggets! Boo Melo!” The packed house erupted in applause. But as the game entered the fourth quarter, Timmons texted a sentiment surely shared across the Front Range: “Melo is becoming an afterthought here. People want the win more.”

Agonizing game, tremendous win, great Jeff Morton recap!

Yes, lock the gate! Don’t let the Italian stallion out of the barn!

Seriously, it’s just plain fabulous to see that sweet Gallinari kid blow everybody away in his return to the Garden against the player he was traded for. Nice to see the Russian being a big part of the proceedings, as well. And Buckets showed his old crowd that he’s still not only a dangerous scorer, but also a critical piece of the successful team the Nuggets have built. This win has to be gratifying for all three of those fellows.

Ty Lawson isn’t exactly shining right now, but it’s good to remember how much pressure his quickness puts on the opposing defense every second he has the ball in his hands. The serious threat that is the Nuggets offense starts with Lawson.

How did the Nuggets pull off this tough road win—fourth win in five nights—with only seven players who had to be somewhat depleted?! Maybe George is throwing adversity their way to build some strength and character for the bigger battles to come. Who knows!

That alley oop to Brewer at the end of the first OT

Of course Dre was terrific in Philly, but I’ve noticed GK seems to prefer the ball in Dre’s hands at end of games. Still Lawson a multiple threat so he stays on the floor.

Gallo got a bit of a slow start on the season (like many) but seems to be hitting a nice stride.

Yes, KFH

Ty’s speed puts constant pressure on opponents. Apart from the physical task of keeping up with him, you have the mental stress of knowing you better have your engine on at all times.

Oh, and, Gallo rules

Ugh.

My dvr stopped recording with two minutes to go in the first OT. Boooo!!

I’m recording the replay and can’t wait to watch it tomorrow.

All I can add is that even if they had lost I saw a great effort from a gassed team. Some actual plays popped up! Especially in the first quarter. Nice movement.

Seems like they knew Ty was the key. He just couldn’t get going tonight. I have to give credit to the Knicks defense (never thought I’d type that). It was tough at times. Dre is a good alternative to Ty. I’m glad he’s here and hope he stays.

Good game. Moz was aggressive, which was good to see. He’s developing nicely. My only criticism of the team tonight is that there was too much dribbling. But again, we were down two players and exhausted, so I think we did great (especially now that I know we won).

Did the Garden crowd boo at the end?

by MattressKing on Jan 22, 2012 1:02 AM MST via iPhone app reply actions

Wait, where can you record the replay? NBATV replays this stuff?

I literally had the same thing happen to me tonight. My DVR recording fizzled out with 1:30 left and Denver was down 103-100, with things looking grim. It was, I believe, mere seconds before Andre Miller hit his miracle shot. I was stoked to see the result when I surrendered and went to the internet, but also a bit peeved since I clearly missed the high drama of how it unfolded.

Checking NBATV replay schedule to hopefully capture this…

Clarification

I meant Lawson. Not sure if it was all the defense or just Ty being off. Now that we’re a few games in I think teams realize that slowing Lawson down means they have a better chance of beating us. Andre doesn’t have the same push in his game. Again, I saw some crisp passing last night, so if we can continue to develop a half court offense we’ll be that much more dangerous.

by MattressKing on Jan 22, 2012 12:28 PM MST via iPhone app up reply actions

I remember at Jakes

there was a point after the referee’s called the ball out of bounds off the Nuggets when Carmelo clearly through it past both Gallo and Harrington’s outstretched arms.

I said it was the most frustrating game of the year.

About 10 minutes later, in the 2nd overtime when Gallinari hit the floating And-1 layup, I called it the most exciting game of the year.

I guess that sums up how up and down this game was – but can’t argue with results.

Is the broadcast staff. I remember them all being pretty harsh last year. But the truth hurts. If Melo truly wants to be an elite player he will have to humble himself and become more open to people trying to help him. The fact is that he’s not realizing his own potential, and in the end he will have nobody to blame but himself.

One fine day I'll come to Denver during NBA season

and will be at Jake’s for Stiffs night out. It IS a long way from Milan, Gallo’s hometown, but don’t count me out.

The Nuggets showed a lot of grit on this road trip, and that is what wins playoff games too. I am so impressed with Big Al’s enthusiasm – that is really an unexpected plus this year.

Groins and hamstrings scare the pants off me – I hope 3 days is enough for our wounded warriors to recover. Go Nuggets!!!

I couldn't agree more....

…..I bet Karl couldn’t agree less.

How can Karl justify a 7 person rotation when Lawson and Nene looked absolutely gassed? I bet Mozgov (even with his stone hands) last night, Anderson, Manimal, and Stone would have looked very fast and energetic in that game last night.

The seven man rotation by Karl last night was absolutely nuts. The team was dead on its feet at various points in the 4th and OT, and we can be thankful no one got hurt last night. Credit to the guys that played for sucking it up and winning the game. We keep hearing we are the deepest team in the NBA, well Weds game at Sacramento is the perfect opportunity to test that theory.

balance, balance balance

In last nights game Gallo, Dre, Big Al and Nene all had double doubles. While double doubles dont win games they do show how balanced Denver is and when you couple that with a desire to win, thats what makes it tough for everyone else.

Denver is now a collection of several very good players and I think that Denver might be a player or two away from being the Western Campions. I like it that we don’t have a superstar and hope that management can keep this group together for several years.

Interesting Stats

Nuggets leading scorers per 36 minutes played,
Al Harrington 21.9 pts/36min with .536% shooting
Corey Brewer 18.7 pts/36min with .514% shooting
Mr. Gallo 18.3 pts/36min with .462% shooting
Ty Lawson 16.3 pts/36min with .464% shooting
Nene 15.5 pts/36min with .500%

My takeaway is that Corey Brewer is currently as efficient on Offense as he is on D. What an amazing addition Brew is turning out to be. Also with 53% shooting al Harrington is seriously playing at an all-star level.

I don't think the players hold as much antipathy towards Melo as the fans do

Fans tend to always take things more personally than the players do (when it comes to trades and stuff…if your name isn’t Andre Miller)

Melo showed me alot by being the one to approach GK before the game. We all know Karl’s history with star players, and the exchange before the game shows some maturity on Melo’s part to talk to Karl. I will never wish ill on Melo. I want to beat him when the Nuggets play him, but considering what he did for the organization…I can’t be mad.

to a whole new level. It’s very interesting to see how that brings out the killer instinct in the Italian Stallion (official new nickname thanks to Al Harrington).

Forget Mad....Melo Saved the Nuggets

He was great for us. He was a great player who put butts in the seats, put us on the Map and made us competitive. He took us as far as he could. Then…by leaving at the Perfect Time, and taking his ego and ball stopping offense and 25 shots…all of which were strangling the team, and giving our genius FO the opportunity to turn our team into the Deep balanced force that it is today, with positive budding stars like Ty and Gallo.

I wish him success in NY

Seriously. When Melo got here we were a 10 win team, Melo turned us around. He was good to Denver until the last year. And by leaving he helped us. He’s a type A personality who puts incredible pressure on himself. NY is a hard road if you’re not winning. I wish him the best.

Great win

sorry i couldn’t make the Stiffs night out… i had family matters to attend to but still managed to catch the second half of the game. It was a great game at that. I completely agree with Jeff, extend Gallo now, he is slowly truning into a dominant SF force and i believe by 2014 he and KD may be running the West for years to come. Great win, keep it up! The Nuggets are the 2nd best team in the West right now but the deepest team in the West right now. This means one injury to OKC rather it be KD, Russel, Ibaka, Harden any of them. If any of those guys goes down that team isn’t the 12-3 team that the standings show. This is a brutal season and unfortunately for every team, a player will get injured. Luckily for the Nuggets they are built to avoid any setbacks of a semi-serious injury whereas other teams aren’t. I’m very pleased with this team right now and the only nice thing I have to say to Melo is thanks for wanting to leave, becuase you gave us a much better team… other than that I still think the guy is a d bag and an arrogant ass hole even with his comments to GK. Call it personal, call it what you want, but i just don’t like that guy. Didn’t really when he was here and still don’t like him. I will miss his closing ability but that’s about it. Other than that whenever I see a L in the NYK column I can’t help but smile becuase it is one examply of how trying to form a mega-team could be disasterous. Maybe that will stop this megateam with megamarket evolution that is taking place becuase that, when the 6 megateams all combine the league will never be the same. Anywho great game and keep it up.

Feb. will be tough

I just glanced at the schedule. Of the 15 games, only 8 look to be likely wins. All the more reason to win and win and win in January. Four games left. Denver should win them all, though that game at Memphis will be tough, the Grizz seem to be playing better after sputtering out of the gate.

And 8-game win streak would be nice going into a month that starts with a brutal back-to-back-to-back.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

as positive as i would like to be

it would not surprise me to have a sub .500 month of february. not being pessimistic, but we have a very hard schedule. that being said, the last two months of the schedule are much easier with much fewer b2b and no more b2b2b. gut it out through feb and then watch us get on a roll towards the playoffs

Ty is still young and will no doubt bounce back

One major difference though from the beginning of the season is that he looks like he has lost his confidence in his outside shot. Once he regains that confidence, his defenders will need to guard him even more aggressively, giving him an easier path to the hoop.

Go Ty!

Just want to hilite one play from game

It may have gone unnoticed. Early in 1st quarter, when Moz blocked a Melo drive, I believe, though cant prove, that it gave Melo reason to pause.

Melo loves to bum rush defenders but with a tall, smart Gallo, and that big Russky guarding the rear it became a no go until late 4th quarter when Team was exhausted and playing NFL style prevent defense.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
