Dear Coach George Karl,

Please, take a moment to look around. You recognize this place? It was your old stomping grounds for about five seasons at the turn of the century. A place where you coached the likes of Ray Allen and Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson. You remember how that ended, right? Screaming matches and the eventual trade of your star player and a rapid descent into mediocrity. You have changed for the better since then.

Your time in Denver has been more up than down. Four straight 50 win seasons is something that has not ever been seen in these parts, and that is something you should be proud of. While I'm sure you are breathing a large sigh of relief at the prospect of not coaching any "stars" with egos, there is a very minor problem brewing (at the moment.) I believe this issue should be corrected soon in order for this team model to continue. It is imperative that you fix your rotations - and do it fast - before the team gets run over by a league that understands you like small lineups.

I'm not against you George and I don't relish being critical of you. In fact, I've played it right down the middle. Certainly you deserve a lot of credit for the way the team was held together last season amidst the Carmelo Anthony trade drama. The way the team played down the stretch, post-trade, is also very much attributable to you. However, a penchant to play "mad scientist" (coupled with the "Evil" George Karl goatee) has shown an itchy trigger finger at times, as well as a perplexing desire to play small lineups when you have over 14-feet of center at your disposal.

For me, it started with Al Harrington (who has played great this season) playing routinely out of position. He's often left guarding players who are bigger, stronger, and quicker than he. The last game against the Utah Jazz (Jan. 15) we had Big Al and Danilo Gallinari both playing out of position against players who were stronger and quicker than they are (Al on Al Jefferson and Gallo on Paul Milsap). This worked for the Nuggets the first time against the Bucks as Harrington guarded Andrew Bogut successfully. Yet, each subsequent time the results have been less satisfactory.

Before you say it George, YES, I do understand the ebb and flow of games. You like to have consistent lineups. Yet, in the last game you had Gallo sitting for what amounted to be the entire third quarter while the Nuggets struggled offensively. And as the team missed free throw after free throw in that third period, there sat the person who draws the most fouls and who hits the highest free throw percentage ... it made no sense.

Yet, what really confuses me is the way Kosta Koufos and Timofey Mozgov have been used, sparingly, in lieu of small lineups that get slowed down and then out-rebounded. Not only that: you stuck with the small lineup for far longer than you should have, for what I can only assume is the sake of "rotation integrity" or something. I suppose that consistency is best in most situations; yet there seems to be an unwillingness to acknowledge the flow of the game and to exploit the Nuggets' depth. This will be essential going forward as these games get more compressed and the players grow more-and-more tired.

These are minor complaints and in the grand scheme of things I hope these issues iron themselves out. Coach, I'm rooting for you to figure this out. This new era of Nuggets basketball is unlike any we have seen in recent memory. Let's hope this continues with success with you as the coach. As fans and writers we long to see our team depth exploited at some point. I hope that time is about to come.

Let's get this resolved tonight, in Milwaukee.

Nuggets of Wisdom

-The Nuggets learned yesterday that Rudy Fernandez will be out for awhile after he re-aggravated his sore Achilles tendon. This will leave the Nuggets without one of their key bench playmakers. Hopefully this means more minutes for Corey Brewer.

-The Bucks are without Mike Dunleavy and are coming off a loss, on the road, to the Philadelphia 76ers last night (94-82), Jan. 16th. However, the Bucks are undefeated at home (4-0) and have the always dangerous chucker Stephen Jackson on the team, as well as Andrew Bogut - who is coming back after a concussion. Milwaukee is a solid team, and they are coached by one of my least favorite coaches in the world in Scott Skiles. However, much like the last game in Denver, expect a hard fought defensive battle.

-I hope that K2 get's some run, and maybe Chris Andersen will get off the schneid and start playing like he did circa 2009, otherwise Birdman is rapidly becoming an amnesty candidate next season. Gallo needs to improve his efficiency and his lay-up abillity, and Andre Miller needs to get over not starting. This is becoming a distraction with Miller and quite frankly it's hurting the team. Ty Lawson had a bad game against Utah, and the Nuggets couldn't afford to have Andre pout, which it seems he did.

Oh, and since I've made some glaring mistake in each of the last two previews on players and they resulted in Nuggets wins ... ummmmm, lets say that Andrew Bogut is a point guard? How about that?

Start of a five game road trip. Hopefully the Nuggets get off to a good start.

Jeff, I'm right there with you about these small lineups.

I would love to see what Mozgov and Koufos could do with 15-20 minutes a night each!

My ideal rotation:

Lawson 32 min / Miller 16 min
Afflalo 28 min / Fernandez and Brewer 20 minutes (whoever is hot)
Gallo 30 min / Harrington 15 min and Brewer 3 min (for some small ball stretch)
Nene 30 min / Harrington 10 min for small ball and Birdman 8 minutes
Mozgov 25 min / Koufos 18 min and Birdman 5 min for small ball stretch

by Nate Timmons on Jan 17, 2012 8:52 AM MST up reply actions

Yes, I realize I have Harrington playing primary backup at two positions … gives Karl some rotation options with Nene and Gallo on the floor with Big Al for small stretches. That way Harrington is still getting about 25 min a night or so.

by Nate Timmons on Jan 17, 2012 8:53 AM MST up reply actions

Yeah I caught that

I like that though. I think this is about the rotations that I’d like to see, but how does Andre only get 16 min?

You know GK is going to play them together for stretches. I just would propose similar minutes while accommodating another 4-8 min with Andre and Ty on the floor at the same time. Please not more than that…

by Missing Lynx on Jan 17, 2012 12:54 PM MST up reply actions

I could handle 20 minutes

Of them together. I’ve seen it work and it is fun to watch. But sometimes it stops working. The Nuggets start taking jump shots and stop moving the ball and when they get pushed into a halfcourt game with no rebounders, there is no use for the speed a small line-up offers.

Ugh. Not to mention a lot of fast-break points start with rebounds and blocked shots, something having big players in like K2 and Moz can give you.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 17, 2012 12:58 PM MST up reply actions

Too many minutes for AAA right now. Every time he touches the ball on a fast break, it results in either a turnover or a missed layup. I know he is a much better player than the way he is playing right now, but it is costing the team by having him on the court. He is solid on the defensive end, but he is struggling horribly on the break and when we’re not on the break, he just stands behind the three point line hoping to get a kick out for a 30% successful three point attempt.

I like these rotations

Pretty much how I see it.

And I’m on the AAA bandwagon. He’s been a bit lackluster, but I believe. He’s shown some flashes. He’ll get it done.

Really hoping Moz continues to get some more minutes like he did against the Heat. He really helped the Nuggets get back in it after a lackluster second quarter.

I do not want to see Miller on the court during closing time. Should be Ty, AAA, Gallo, Al and Nene. All of these guys can shoot and are reliable from the stripe. Nene will get it figured out.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 17, 2012 12:50 PM MST up reply actions

Yea, its not really AAA's fault

What I see is that the NBA rushed to put a season back together to make money this year. The end result? MOST teams have no chemistry. This has been some of the worst basketball from the NBA in many many years. Night in and night out, I see horrible basketball being played. Any team with new players trying to learn a system are struggling. What makes great teams great, is that they would have all 12 players buying into and playing according to a system.

This is all true

But if this is the case, wouldn’t the Nuggets, with their youth have some advantage? Isn’t that the conventional wisdom?

Keep in mind, all 5 of the Nuggets starters were here last year, as was the biggest piece off the bench in Harrington.

Is this team buying into the system? It sure looks like it at times. Again, while I’m all pissy about the Nuggets 2-2 homestand, I still think this has the makings of an elite team. I just can’t figure out the inconsistencies.

Is your love worth the nausea it could bring?

by Fly Agaric on Jan 17, 2012 1:13 PM MST up reply actions

I still don't get it

Kosta Koufos has never averaged in his carrier with three different coaches more than 12 MPG (in playoffs he has 3.4 record). What should have happened to him this summer, that George Karl would decide to add 33% more to his usual time on court? Hm, maybe a good reason for that Kosta and George finding themselves in a new season in a team with relatively weak big players? But instead, maybe because this bigs are so raw, George decides to keep centers with their usual game share and play without a center at all other times?
I say its plausible.

by Moskovite on Jan 17, 2012 2:12 PM MST up reply actions

And one of the few with the quickness to guard Ty.

could be a tough night for Lawson, dogged by Bogut on the perimenter with Jennings patrolling the paint behind him.

lol

Gotta watch out for Jennings, his quickness and elevation belie his frame, he is a monster shot blocker.

Playing catch up..

Losing two home games have the Nuggets playing catch up and all the Stiffs on edge. Get back to playing hard Nuggets. And make no mistake you are gonna have to play hard. The Bucks are just like the Hornets and Jazz, if you are caught sleeping you lose.

I am hoping the Nuggets have learned some lessons and are NOT counting wins before they play like us Stiffs are. Milwaukee only has one true big man, Bogut. Nuggets wear him down and they should romp inside.

Here’s hope that should is will.

George is probably gambling a bit.

maybe he thinks that the compressed schedule will get to teams, say after 30 games or so and that the nuggets can then hurt teams whith their depth and a bunch of rested players (nobody plays more than 33 minutes).

by MZG on Jan 17, 2012 8:56 AM MST reply actions

Except this goes against his history

He never reduced minutes for Kmart or Billups to help them get through a season. Karl looks at each game, never takes the long view.

Nuggets should win

but who knows, they are so unpredicatable right now. They need to establish a flow and some consistency. They have the ability to do so, they just aren’t right now. Hopefully they can establish this starting tonight in Milwaukee.

something I'm wondering about re. amnesty

Birdman is being mentioned a lot as a candidate for amnesty this summer, and I can’t argue with that desire. But how likely is it that the Nuggets are ever going to amnesty anybody? It means paying the player’s salary without having it count against the cap, right? Is Stan really going to be willing to pay a player’s salary and not have him on the roster?

Agree

there is no need to use the amnesty unless it allows the team to get another player. Same thing I said when people were calling for Harrington to be amnesty’d.

Bird is a likely amnesty candidate because he only has two more years after this season

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/denver.htm

which makes paying the player easier to swallow. That and he “only” makes 4 million a year which is three million less than Harrington.

Huh, so you think Stan would be willing to have Bird’s salary coming out of his pocket without having him in a Nugs uniform? That’s the part that I’m really wondering about. I’m sure Stan would be glad to avoid going into luxury tax, but I just keep thinking he’s most likely to say “If I’m paying a guy’s salary, then he’s on the team; if keeping Bird on the roster is putting us over the cap, we need to make some other moves to get back under.” Total speculation on my part, of course.

Thanks for the link

Salaries are randomly specific. $2,225,478.

I don’t think they’ll need to amnesty anyone for cap space. They only have $30 million under contract next year, depending on what they do with Koufus and Fernandez . They could sign a max free agent and still have plenty of money to extend Gallo.

Space is valuable. I expect the Nuggets to make a run at Fernandez and Koufos. I’m not sure either want to stay…but you never know. The Nuggets need to get rid of some of this “depth” and turn it in to a tight rotation since Karl has shown he prefers 8 to 9 man rotations.

Bird is rapidly becoming a waste of salary. Which is sad because he was such an exciting player in 09…

Luxury tax isn't going to be a factor

I'm thinking they wont be bumping against the cap ceiling next year

under any circumstances. They will wait till the ceiling goes up in 2013… Ty needs extending. Gallo Needs extending. Resign Rudy. Resign Kouf. Need back up point guard after Andre leaves (Stone isn’t ready) Possibly extend Mozgov and Brewer. All these guys are coming up in the next two seasons. You can’t re-sign all of them without amnestying someone.

Stan has a penchant for waiting till the last minute to extend, and that almost bit him in the ass this offseason with Nene and AAA.

I really do believe that the Nuggets will trade some of their “depth” either at the deadline or when FA hits.

Yes, but no way

do the Nugs amnesty Bird. At least I would be shocked. He probably has half his salary paid just because of his popularity. All the mohawk wigs and Andersen jerseys he sells. Just because he is not playing as good, doesn’t mean he still is not, in a sense, generating revenue for the team. He doesn’t have an albatross contract, and even though he is not playing like 2009, he still is a decent backup BIG man, though I think we have better options.

All about preparation

Things I do like about George Karl and his coaching is his teams always seem to be very good, smooth passers, if you look at teams like the Kings, they are always worried about holding onto the ball but Karl teams seem to pass flawlessly. He is good at making top 5 offenses and can get his defenses to be efficient enough for wins.

SAYING THAT however, his lineup changes have been baffling me lately and even I give him a leash and the benefit of the doubt. Also while I’m at it, he isn’t that good at getting his teams into the right mindsets. This is not a team full of egos so he can’t use that excuse this time. He ingrains a “swing through the motions” mindset. If he wants us to be the Atlanta Hawks of the West, then so be it.

Karl knows a lot about the game, more than I ever would dream to imagine, but he is the girlfriend you dated before you married the woman of your dreams.. she was nice, just not marriage worthy because while she might had seemed great, she missed the finer points of the relationship. Karl is less HOO-RAH! and more willing to throw players under the bus, they don’t even need an ego to be thrown under the bus.

He's got the players lined up, the bus is in gear.

Step 1) Call out your players by saying you need two or more of them to step up to have a good season.

Step 2) After a loss in which poor rotations played a role, give an interview saying the players got overconfident.

Yet to come:

If the team underperforms, Step 3) is to remind everyone of Step 1), with specific guys who failed to step up.

With Rudy down

Do you think we would activate Hamilton? Also, I don’t see Brewer taking up any more time than normal. I honestly believe that Karl is just going to play Dre more at the 2 guard while Rudy is down. If this injury benefits anyone, its going to be Stone because Karl will run his PG lineup more than normal resulting in faster fatigue.

dunks are soooo boring unless

in context of game, while being truly opposed.

Otherwise they are as exciting as the slams in slam dunk contest. Boring

Here’s what really jaw dropping. K Irving using his body to smoothly drive around 5 guys then hitting the sweetest jay you’ve seen, R Rubio being able to anticipate virtually every move team mates make while collecting assists, steals and rebounds, DWade jumping over teammates to block a shot by a 7 footer, Dirk making outside shots that are parabolic. Heck even a Tim Duncan 5 foot bank shot is as exciting as a dunk

"rotation integrity"

Jeff, that’s high-larious! I’m not sure you can use those two words in the same phrase where the Nuggets and George Karl are concerned. Mutually exclusive terms, aren’t they?

In all seriousness, the man is still trying to get things set after no camp or preseason, right? Yet I share the terrible frustrations most of us feel as that (charitably termed) rotation fails again and again. I hope Karl figures out what he’s doing. In the meantime, I’m as flummoxed as anyone.

true true

but I’m not quite sure he deserved either of those and its not like his teams ever won anything. While some of that can be contributed to D’Antoni’s disdain for defense on the whole, at the end of the day some of that falls on Nash being that he was the best player and leader of that team. Then again I’m just disproving my own choice because Gallo isn’t exactly going to be named to any all defense teams any time soon (but 1.8 spg!). I’m way too exited about that

of course defense is important but I frankly am tired of hearing good players criticized for “bad defense” Defense is really a team thing and very few players impact game defensively.

Remember some of THE greatest all time players and present greats were cited as bad on defense

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
