Golden Nuggets: So....who is the Nuggets' type?

In the weird fantasy world where there is no NBA lockout - and where unicorns and leprechauns frolic in  the open with the Loch Ness monster - lets talk about what the "Denver" type of player is.

Star-divide

Right at the time Carmelo Anthony was traded from the Denver Nuggets. Former Denver Broncos football player (and current radio talk show host) Alfred Williams went on record as saying that Denver needs players that want to play in Denver. There is a "type" of player who would willingly stay with the Nuggets and not seek greater branding and fame in a larger market.

Now...Williams went on to imply (in a roundabout way) that there was a slight racial undertone to what type of player the fans of Denver would cheer for (not including Chauncey Billups who is a hometown guy). Putting that aside, what is the type of player that would seek to stay and win championships in Denver? Do we have any clue?

Unfortunately the Nuggets don't have a long history of players "choosing" to stay in Denver in the free agency era. Alex English comes to mind. Dan Issel comes to mind as well. Outside of that the Nuggets have mirrored the city dynamics of Denver. Transient. Players have often used Denver as a either as a stepping stone (Melo), or left after being offered an insulting contract (Dikembe Mutumbo) or were traded (Antonio McDyess, CB...twice for both). English is the one star who stayed the longest.

So you must, as a team, find a star (because winning in the NBA requires stars) who want's to stay in Denver. People point to Kevin Durant in Oklahoma City, but I keep telling people that he signed almost the same exact contract extension that Melo did after his third year. In the NBA you get paid on your third contract. So it's yet to be actually seen if Durant will choose to stay in OKC when his extension is up. Is there a player out there that would willing spend the majority of their career's in Denver and build a contending team? If so, what kind of player would they be?

On a personal note: I've never felt comfortable with a so called "Franchise Tag". Players hate them, and I don't like the concept of identifying your team as a prison. We scoff at players who don't want to stay for a higher average one year salary, but lets face it...you want players who WANT to be here...not who are forced to when they have an opportunity to leave.

With that being said, is there any potential star on the Nuggets roster? I hope (and the Nuggets hope) it's Danilo Gallinari? But does Gallo have the desire to stay in Denver and build something? That remains to be seen. Who is it on this Nuggets team that want's to both stay in Denver and to lead this team for years to come? It's hard to say, and quite frankly these are the questions that have haunted this city for a long time. Are we doomed to be a transient NBA stop for budding superstars, OR, is there that special player - special DENVER player - who want's to take the mile high city on their backs.

So my fellow stiffs...who are the players on the roster you think will become stars? Will they stay in Denver? If not, does this mean we have to get "lucky" in the (infuriating to Jeff) NBA draft lottery?

The future is up in the air...when the NBA returns let's hope the future is a bright one for our Denver Nuggets.

I hope lawerence frank gets a jon back in the nba

he was actually a good coach when he didnt have to run plays through brook lopez and had a bunch of scrubs to work with, kiki V. Made the team far worse when he took over as “coach”.

Yup, I saw Frank up close in NY and

no doubt that that man could coach. I frankly had the same bias against Frank that I had against Van Gundy when the Knicks got him. They just didnt LOOK like coaches. Come to find out, it was just my bias and both are good coaches.

I also think Frank makes a GREAT assistant coach. We could use him.

If the Broncos can be a destination for players...

Why can’t the Nuggets?

The NFL doesn’t seem to have this problem. Why?

by Pusherman on Jul 22, 2011 10:57 AM MDT reply actions

great question pusherman

ESPN radio was just discussing this. I think that football is just different than basketball. Maybe, with the exception of QBs and diva receivers, NFLers are less starry eyed than NBAers that depends on instantly recognizable stars.

But I’d love to read an intelligent item on just this question

by sgiustra on Jul 22, 2011 11:01 AM MDT up reply actions

To further on your point

You have to consider the core differences between the sports. Football is a team sport, it takes about 25-30 guys doing their jobs and working together to be victorious. Basketball is a game that can be dominated by one player and thus can garner so much more attention then say a tight end or something like that

It really is hard to compare any of the major sports leagues to the NFL

It is such a juggernaut and not all of it has to do with the actual games. The NBA is star driven, and is marketed as such…so the problem with keeping players in Denver will continue until the Nuggets find that player who is both a star and is content where he is at.

The difference between the NFL and NBA is the schedule

NFL players get done with a game, it is the middle of Sunday afternoon and they are physically beat up and in need of some rest. If they do want to go out for some entertainment, their work day is over early enough to go to any entertainment options they want.

NBA players get done with a game, it usually after 11 p.m. and they are amped up and ready to go. There schedule is that they work late in the day, often travel through the night, and sleep most of the day. For an NBA player 11 PM to 6 AM is the equivalent of your 5 PM to 11 AM. So a big part of the appeal of a city is what is open and available for entertainment in the middle of the night. In Denver, not much. In NY, there are many more options.

I buy the star argument (kind of), but not the schedule argument

However, there are stars in the NFL too..RBs, QBs, receivers. I don’t see anyone demanding to go the the Giants…and LA doesn’t even have a team for God’s sake.

Baseball is pretty similar as well. There are stars and, really, the only destination team is the NY Yankees and (maybe) Boston because they open the pocket books…and NY has crazy tradition.

BUT, I get it, NBA is star driven…but it seems like the demands are out of whack.

by Pusherman on Jul 22, 2011 2:01 PM MDT up reply actions

I'd say it's parity...and star power (aka ego)

NFL the league is built on teams being able to swing to the top in an off-season or two.

Most that admired the NBA through the years realize you’ve got a very select group of champions on a regular basis. Similiar to college football you draw the players in selling that your program continues to win.

Once you get past those options…you go to where they can expand their star power (stroke the ego). More then any other sport the stars are hyped in to celebrity model. Other sports detract this behavior of being above the team. NBA embraces it.

Nuggets types, huh?

I agree with Gallo. Hopefully he’s not too citified to consider Denver long-term. It was obvious that he loved NYC. But, in the event he develops as we hope, I think he could bond with Denver and Denver will love him.

I also see Ty. AAA and Nene as possible long termers. I just get a sense that they dont share Melo’s delusions of grandeur, delusions that were fed by many in the media.

And of course I fervently hope that Faried realizes his potential. (BTW, Gallo is only a year older than Faried so be patient with Gallo. He should get at least 2 more years to show us.)

However, much as I really like him and appreciate his game, I dont believe that Chandler wants to be in Denver. I think Denver should send him back to NY for T Douglas (an OK player) and maybe draft considerations.

by sgiustra on Jul 22, 2011 10:58 AM MDT reply actions

I agree that Chandler has eyes for NY still. It would be difficult for him to get there

I know for a fact the Nuggets are banking heavily on Gallo becoming a star. I hope his development continues because attracting free agents to Denver has always been quite difficult.

But I agree that he’s not coming here. Orlando just can’t seem to find the perimeter scorer they desperately need. They’ve tried Richardson (two of em), Arenas, Turkoglu and Lewis. Nothing seems to click though. Could probably do with more of a facilitator at point guard as well

Hey now...

I would never imply he was forcing himself here. Once you look at the other options…we’re more appealing then a lot of the other teams/markets he can go to via free agency. Then again if there’s no 2011 season it gets a lot more convulded in the free agent market.

I think he’s more likely to resign with Orlando then to come to us…but you have to try and give your best hand. Otherwise I say stink it up again and hope for the lottery.

Then again with the Nuggets track record the lottery maybe the stoning kind.

Yes, and

the knicks weren’t the best option for Melo to win a title last year. And neither were the heat for Wade and James. Denver could have the best teammates, biggest contract, and best coach and free agents still wouldn’t want to come here.

Toney Douglas is not "an OK player"

His defense is suspect, his offense is 10 times more inconsistent than JR’s, and, as an undersized combo guard, he has no place on the Nuggets.

I havent noticed a lack of aggressiveness but

I’ll take your word on this . He does go in and out of games though.

My biggest plus for Ty is his speed but my biggest minus is his height. Look, 5’11 is 5’11 (that’s what he appears on TV) and in BB short is not good because you constantly have to compensate for it.

But Ty is just another intriguing ? for the Nugs. Can he be consistent when he takes the reins from preseason onward? We’ll see and cross our fingers.

The honeymoon is over

this team gets a honeymoon period after every big shakeup. They brought in Karl, and went on a big run that ended in the playoffs. They brought in AI and kept alive for the playoffs during the suspension. They dumped AI for Billups and the remnants from his prior coaching kept the honeymoon through the WCF’s. The honeymoon after the Melo trade lasted until about 10 to 15 games left in the regular season. Unless they make some major addition to bring on another honeymoon period, this looks like a 9th or 10 seed.

JBnuggs, you're right and

Thanks for bringing that game up because it’s a game I watched intently. Here’s what happened.

Gallo played well. Look it up.

Gallo scored only 2 pts, but he didnt screw up the game by missing a bunch of shots. He basically stood back on offense. Everyone else was scoring and G didnt need to get his.

Here’s what else he did. In only 19 minutes, he had 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 blocked shots. He was basically matched up against P Pierce, a very fine player, and Gallo gave him hell on Dee. PP shot 7 – 18, 1 FS, 1 assist. Gallo matches up against him very well. Gallo is bigger and, believe it or not, more athletic than PP.

Gallo had a positive effect without even scoring and that’s why I think he has very good potential.

but “Superstar” may be a bit out of reach for either player.

How about, “players that consistently outplay their opponents, occasionally play great, dont get attitudes, dont worry about their stats because they know personal stats dont win games, make clutch plays and dont try to pout selves out of Denver” Think Hedo when he was good, P Pierce in championship year, Ty Chandler not putting up line but helping team etc etc.

Think what we got right after the trade except in the playoffs we make foul shots, have Faried get rebs, Gallo settles in as initiator after Ty, have a healthy Mozgov (who helped neutralize Bynum in LA), a healthy AAA and I’m in. Would you settle for that?

Spot on Jeff

In that one, lone, solitary game vs Portland, Gallo showed what’s possible. I’m not saying probable. That kind of all around dominance is not really conceivable w/ AAA, Ty or Nene, much as I respect & love ’em

Gallo wasnt just on a lucky roll. Hell even I’ve been on rolls where midcourts werent out of the question.. But he showed that very possibly he could control a game, that at 6’10 he can run an offense and he’s a bit of a nervous Nelly with his shot, but he has an unbelievable shot. D’Antoni was stupid to pronounce him the greatest shooter he ever saw (put a bullseye on him) but I’m sure he saw something special.

I’m not unrealistic re Gallo. I see his deficiencies. But at 6’10, 220 – 240 lbs, has a handle, could shoot, is smart, for most of last year foul shooting neared 90% (had many long streaks), willing, motivated, unselfish – just a lot to like

I’ll add a stat that is astonishing. He scores 1.5 pts per shot. That’s incredible efficiency to get at 15 – 16 ppg. It’s a rate I havent seen matched by any other player. Melo was at 1.25 pp shot. Are you going to tell me that Gallo wouldnt tally 10 more ppg if he took 10 more shots a game? Do you honestly believe that his rate would go from 1.5 points per shot to < 1 point per shot over the additional 10 shots? No way!

But, BB is so mental. You have to be OK with being THE man, THE shooter. It takes physical and mental energy to be consistent. That’s the question with Gallo.

by sgiustra on Jul 22, 2011 8:08 PM MDT up reply actions

I like Ty and Gallo to be the stars going forward, but there is another...

Jordan Hamilton. Yes he did go 26th overall, but this was a major slip every draft board had him going in the lottery. The man was the top ranked sf coming out of high school 2 years ago. After an awful freshman season, he got his maturity together, and averaged 19 and 8 in Texas’ slow methodical system. I can only imagine what he can do in our up tempo offense. I think he can be very very good for us, especially if he improves his maturity and decision making.

its more about the management than the location

I think the same question could be asked of San Antonio which has been able to retain and build a quality core over time. Likewise, ideal locations like LA and NY have not created a successful franchise for the Clippers and the Knicks either. The issue is more about the quality of the coach and the esprit that the players have with the staff, management and owners moreso than the town that they are with. I’m not sure that Karl breeds an environment that leaves his team clamoring to sign on the dotted line.

Ehh, Kahn's not that stupid

He’s interviewing Don Nelson, and seems pretty impressed by what he’s done. Nelson would actually be decent with the Wolves, as he’d play Rubio and he’d play smallball, which they could use since their center rotation is Millicic-Pekovic-Tolliver… a Rubio-Johnson-Beas-Williams-Love starting lineup looks great on paper

what about jr

i think jr would love to be a lifetime nugget if the coach showed a little love. yes, he’s a knucklehead, but i think he’s been handled as badly by Karl as possible, so mostly it was about the coach and not the town, per se.

Then he will probably go to Dallas or Houston. But he has a good chance of winning in OKC

Ty Lawson is the best player on the Nuggets

Not Gallo, not Nene, not Afflalo — Ty. Period. If anybody is the future of the franchise, its undoubtedly Ty Lawson.

As for the “type of player” willing to stay in Denver for an extended period of time, I think its overblown because of the Melo situation. Melo wanted to be a celebrity just as much, if not more, as he did a good ball player and that’s why he bounced. I think plenty (around 80% or more) or dudes would be more than happy to play in Denver if they just have talent around them.

Agreed

We have been shackled with bad contracts for so long now that we think that quality free agents don’t want to come here to play. I just don’t think we had the money to impress anyone since pre-Kenyon Martin.

I’m excited to see who we can pull in.

I dont necessarily agree Ty is best Nug

and I’d rather the best Nug be 7’1" (Moz), 6’10"(Nene or Gallo), or 6’6"(AAA). Very few teams have done anything with 5’11 superstars.

But, if TY Was THE man, heck I love TY, and I’m only a couple inches taller, so that would be terrific.

But, I’m sorry, 5’11 is 5’11 and with little guys, unless you have Isaih’s amazing ability, Iverson’s and Rose’s freakish athleticism, Nash’s ungodly basketball creativity, not to mention all time shooting, it’s hard to have a star impact. My question? What does Ty have to be that special at that height?

Can he shoot lites out like that one game? Outrun the whole other team consistently?

by sgiustra on Jul 23, 2011 5:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Nobody said he's gonna be Rose

Or Nash, or Isiah, or Iverson. All I said was that he’s the best Nugget right now. But to your point, I think he does three things exceptionally well: pass, dribble and run. I think when he combines all those and improves his jump shot, he’ll be a deadly force. I think Ty is gonna surprise a LOT of people next year, especially people on this blog.

Hmmmm

OK, I was impressed with Ty. And I love what he brings.

The way you phrase it, “best nugget right now” – maybe. But my point is that for this team to make noise in the playoffs, IMO we need someone other than Ty to be the best Nug.

Maybe, that’s why we lost to OKC. Not that it was Ty’s fault but if he was our best I dont see us beating teams that feature Durant, Kobe, Dirk etc.

But, if I’m wrong, I’ll be happy to be so because I love that guy and root really hard for him as I root hard for Nene, Gallo, Will, JR, Moz, AAA – all personal faves.

by sgiustra on Jul 24, 2011 10:33 AM MDT up reply actions

You're correct

There’s no way were going to beat teams like the Thunder, Lakers and Mavs with Ty as our best player, but that’s George Karl’s fault as much as anyone’s. If we want to compete out West we must somehow obtain a superstar, but that’s kind of the problem. The way I see it the Nugs can’t really land that dude via the draft unless we make some kind or miraculous trade, and we much cap space as we have I still don’t see any Lebrons coming to Denver anytime soon. Who knows, maybe Ujiri will pull something off.

I don't see how that relates to being Karl's fault

Free agents are more likely to come to a Karl-coached team than, say, an Issel-coached team

Being a newly minted Nug fan, I have to ask

whata issa thisa “Issel” thada you keepa taking abowt?

by sgiustra on Jul 24, 2011 9:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Ever since I lost my sarcasm detector last week, I haven't been able to tell if people are being sarcastic

So I’ll assume that you’re not.

Dan Issel played with the Kentucky Colonels for a while back when the ABA existed, and he was definitely a top-5 player in that league. Then, he got sold to some other franchise before ending up with the Denver Rockets(ABA)/Nuggets(NBA). Even though he was starting to get up there in years during the later part of the tenure with the Nuggets, Issel was a very talented and consistent All-Star who helped guide the Denver Nuggets to relative success in our first years in the NBA.

Then, eight (seven?) years after Issel retired from the NBA, he got a job with the Nuggets as head coach, and… well, I wasn’t alive back then so I’m not sure if he was a good coach or not, but he did lead that 42-win Nuggets team in ‘93-’94 to a first-round upset of the George Karl-coached 63-win Seattle Supersonics. Issel resigned halfway through the next season for some reason.

In 1998, Issel returned to the team, but this time as President and GM. That was the year after that disastrous 1997 draft (Tony Battie with the 5th pick!) and subsequent horrendous season (11-71, second worst in NBA history). In 1999, Issel named himself the coach and *Kiki Vandeweghe the GM. He did a horrible job, but the Nuggets’ ownership situation was a complete mess at the time.

There was also that December 2001 incident that led to his resignation, but I won’t go into depth with that here.

Evidently, Issel is struggling with debt, and he’s looking towards getting an NBA job again.

If there’s anything wrong about my account, please feel free to correct me

*In case you didn't know, it was under Kiki Vandeweghe's tenure in Denver that the following happened:

2002 NBA draft: We had the 5th pick, and we traded with the Knicks for the 7th pick. With the 5th pick, we drafted NBA Superstar Nikoloz Tskitishvili ahead of scrubs like Amar’e Stoudemire, Caron Butler, Carlos Boozer, Luis Scola, Tayshaun Prince, and Melvin Ely. With the 7th pick, we picked the man who recently rejected a damn-good contract offer from us.

2004 offseason: We traded 3 first-round draft picks to trade for Kenyon Martin and his 7-year, $91-million contract.

OH, you wanna talk old, Jeff?

I was being a little facetious asking about Issel in my heavy Italian accent. Look, I’m 53 and I very well remember Issel.

I recall he was a great player and he was on a terrific team and the ABA was loaded with talent.

Still feel old, Jeff?:)

And Lack, thanks so much for your treatise on Issel. It was very well done but I didnt mean for anyone to do all that work (I’m smiling real hard as I write this). So, thank you.

And look, I bet there are plenty of readers who dont know who the hell Issel was to the ABA & Denver.

Well now they know, and they may know waaaay more than they ever wanted (I’m now laughing real hard, but in a respectful good-natured way) to know about Issel and .. oh, gotta catch my breath, I better just log out or the laughing is going to mess up my sleep.

Thanks again LACK, love your posts

OK, pretty funny & I dont see Moz as being our best player

My point is that it has to be big to medium-sized guys that take on the “star” roles.

Re: Moz, if – IF, he contributes, just contributes – he will be as valuable as almost any other player on Nugs. Last I looked, 7’1" is 7’1" I know his stats suck but I think we lost something when he went down.

Let’s hope he contributes because he’s big, he’s athletic, he can actually shoot, he’s cheap and I doubt he has a diva complex. His problem is frankly between his ears. Cross your fingers. “There’s no place like home.”

Star or no stars, some player(s) will distinguish self from others. I think that’s most likely to be either Nene, Gallo, and/or Ty with Will providing consistency & punch and AAA providing leadership and gonads.

Lights out

Lawson has great potential to develop those intangibles that Billups was known for and that cannot be measured by statistics. I guarantee you that in 3 years, Lawson will be a much better team player than Rose currently is or Iverson ever was.

I love Ty too. He and AAA are Denver types

I see him playing at near All-star level this season. He needs a reliable floater and a step-back lane jumper to keep opposing centers from just waiting flat-footed to block his layups, and he needs to shoot the pull-up 3 with confidence. 18 and 7 in 30 mpg.

I want Ty and AAA as co-captains. AAA may never be an All-star (perhaps unjustly), but he is and will continue to be a fine all-around player. With a couple more touches, he should be the most efficient 15+ppg guard in the NBA.

Gallo will be top scorer, and I agree with those above who say he is a a swell player who plays hard at both ends. 20ppg, 5 rpg, 3apg

OT: Rockies lose again, fall to 6 below .500

This is why I hope the lockout ends soon and NBA (L)action resumes as normal.

And that's in the MLB

Even though the MLB season is twice as long as the NBA season, the chance that a team is 6 or 7 under .500 is actually about the same in both leagues, possibly even less likely in the MLB compared to the NBA because of the relative parity and because of how baseball is played.

Translated into NBA record-language, the Rockies would sit at around 37-45 or 38-44. Of course, if we lose both Nene and Kenyon in FA, we could be looking at a 50-loss season

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
