Nuggets draft recap: Biggest winner tonight is Masai Ujiri

After pulling off a great deal mid-season with the New York Knicks, Nuggets Nation was abuzz about what he would do for an encore. Well, after tonight's draft Denver fans should be very pleased with the direction the team is heading. The Nuggets traded Raymond Felton to the Portland Trail Blazers and in return received Andre Miller (for his second tour here) and the draft rights to Jordan Hamilton via the Dallas Mavericks. In addition to getting good value for Felton, the Nuggets landed a guy they wanted at No. 22 in power forward, and rebounding machine, Kenneth Faried. Well done Mr. Ujiri - well done.

Star-divide

As I'm sitting here typing this - right next to me - Chris Tomasson is on the phone with the newest Nugget Jordan Hamilton. I wanted to grab the phone and tell Hamilton that I'm happy he's going to be a Nugget.

The folks in the media room at the Pepsi Center calmly watched the first-round unfold, but a funny thing happened along the way - the Portland Trail Blazers drafted Duke guard Nolan Smith with pick No. 21 and the room suddenly erupted with trade talk. Shortly after Nolan was selected we learned that the Nuggets had indeed swapped Raymond Felton to Portland. But for what players?

Andrew and I were immediately concerned that the draft picks involved (No. 21 for Portland and No. 22 for Denver) were going to be swapped and that Smith was coming to Denver and perhaps Faried (whom the Nuggets literally just picked) was going to Portland. Our fears were quickly put at ease as we learned that the draft picks would be staying put and Faried would indeed be coming to Denver.

Trade breakdown:

Denver receives:
PG Andre Miller
SF/PF Jordan Hamilton (No. 26 pick)
Future 2nd Round Pick (from Portland)

Portland receives:
Raymond Felton

Dallas receives:
Rudy Fernandez

As ESPN delayed announcing the deal, Marc Stein posted it on Twitter, and confirmation floated around the room at the Pepsi Center. Finally ESPN announced the deal, but they had Hamilton staying in Portland - this error was later corrected and the draft day coup by Ujiri and Company was complete.

Before Morehead State played Louisville, I was actually walking around outside the Pepsi Center, looking for quotes on the NBA playoffs. I walked right by the Morehead State bus as it was pulling up. Faried walked right in front of me and I had no idea who he was, but noticed his can't miss dreadlocks right away. Faried says he likes to whip his hair around to annoy his opponent and that hair is something that Nugget fans will get to know well.

As the first-round was unfolding Feinstein, Tomasson, Jeremy from Roundball Mining Company, and I were taking note that certain players were slipping and that the Nuggets might have their pick of Faried and Hamilton, but never did I think they'd be able to land both.

I figured somebody would snag Faried earlier than No. 22 as his motor, work ethic, and rebounding will translate to the NBA game and he will be able to help the Nuggets right away. Some say he could be the next Dennis Rodman, people in Nuggets Nation may fear him because of the minor resemblance to Renaldo Balkman, but hopefully, if his offensive game can improve, he can be a different type of player than either of those two.

The pick of Faried likely spells doom for Kenyon Martin, as the Nuggets appear poised to move in a different direction.

The direction Hamilton moved is not something he was probably happy about. The former Texas forward was looking like a lock to be selected in the teens and as he slipped down the draft board his value rose. The Nuggets are taking a chance on Hamilton. Take Tomasson's Tweet for instance after getting off the phone with him:

 Chris Tomasson

I like the fact that the scoring forward, who said he is a better rebounder because he played center on teams as a youngster, will be heading to Denver with a large chip on his shoulder. Whether his shot selection or coach bad mouthing him caused him to drop, the fact that he'll be hungry to prove doubters wrong bodes well for George Karl and the rest of the staff.

Karl got a present on draft night as well. It's a well-known fact that Karl is a big fan of Andre Miller and his re-addition to the team will be comforting to the coach and Miller can probably teach Lawson a thing or two before his time in Denver is up. I expect the Nuggets to keep Miller and they will likely pick up his team option of $7.8 million for the upcoming season (if the Blazers haven't already picked that up).

The big question is: will Miller be asked to come off the bench or will he be given the chance to start? It's hard for me to imagine the Nuggets putting Lawson back on the bench, but Miller warrants at least the opportunity to do what he does best - start. Should be an interesting training camp.

Ujiri and the rest of the Denver front office has given the team some nice ingredients. The Nuggets and Ujiri were big winners tonight.

Andrew Feinstein's take on the night's events:

For the first time since 2002 - when the Nuggets astutely traded Antonio McDyess and the 25th overall pick (Frank Williams) to the New York Knicks for the seventh overall pick (Nene) and Marcus Camby - the Nuggets were proactively engaged in an NBA Draft. And based on the initial reaction among the fans and those in the local media who cover the team, the Nuggets immediately bettered themselves while protecting their backside should Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith and/or Wilson Chandler not re-sign in Denver.

Even though he gave a hard-fought, yeoman's effort nightly in a Nuggets' uniform, Raymond Felton had to be traded. Maybe not tonight, maybe not tomorrow, but eventually there was no future for Felton as long as Masai Ujiri, Josh Kroenke and George Karl are enamored with having Ty Lawson start at point guard (an affection for Lawson I don't share, but understand). For the most part upon arriving in Denver from New York last season, Felton kept his mouth shut about not being a starting point guard in Denver. But on multiple occasions his real thoughts became known, and were confirmed tonight byFox 31's Josina Anderson who caught up with Felton during draft night and got the point guard on record saying: "They [the Nuggets] knew how I felt through my agent."

But while I assumed Felton would be traded, I never envisioned him being dealt for Andre Miller; the former Nugget and a favorite of head coach George Karl. Miller is 36 years old - ancient for an NBA point guard not named Steve Nash, Jason Kidd or John Stockton - but with just one year left on his contract the Nuggets should get one good season out of Miller, especially with Lawson able to log heavy minutes. And normally I'd be concerned about an older player being adversely affected by a prolonged lockout, but Miller never conditions in the offseason anyway so it shouldn't matter.

The most intriguing part of the 2011 NBA Draft for Denver, of course, are the acquisitions of Kenneth Faried (22nd overall pick) and Jordan Hamilton (26th). With Faried and Hamilton, not only do the Nuggets get an injection of new blood and energy on the defensive and offensive side of the basketball, respectively, but they are hedging themselves should Martin (likely), Smith (likely) and Chandler (50/50) not return. Like many fans, I'm much higher on Faried than I am on Hamilton. As FM102.3 The Ticket's Chad Andrus said to me in the Nuggets media lounge tonight, Faried is one of the few players in the 2011 NBA Draft that can step into an NBA game and perform on Day One because of his tenacious rebounding and defense. I couldn't agree more.

Hamilton, on the other hand, comes with more question marks. How was this guy projected to be drafted in the teens and yet end up getting drafted 26th? What spooked other general managers and not Ujiri? Is he perhaps "uncoachable," as Chris Tomasson reported Texas head coach Rick Barnes to be saying about his own player? I suppose these questions will be answered if/when the NBA season gets started and if/when Hamilton finds playing time in Karl's lineup...a lineup not typically favorable for rookies who didn't play at North Carolina.

Regardless of how things eventually wind up for Denver with Miller coming back and Faried and Hamilton coming on board, Ujiri and the Nuggets should be applauded for being aggressive, solving the Felton problem and putting the Nuggets in position to remain deep at point guard while improving their rebounding dramatically. If it weren't for that goddamn lockout that appears to be inevitable, I'd be a lot more excited tonight.

Conference call with Kenneth Faried:

He's happy to be a Denver Nugget and thought he might end up in Denver. And when asked if he can come in and play right away Faried said, "I think I can make an immediate impact. ...(with his) hustle and toughness."

When asked about what number he plans to wear for the Nuggets Faried said, "I'm going to stay with 35." He has worn 35 since high school and expects it to be retired at Morehead State as it has already been retired at his high school.

When he was asked if the biggest month of his life was happening now - as he recently graduated and got drafted within the past month - he declined. He said the biggest month in his young life was when daughter was born. A very classy response and shows he's not thinking of himself.

When asked if his rebounding skills would translate to the NBA game and why it would continue to be a strength of his game Faried said, "(Because) I'm not scared. ...I have a never quit attitude."

The young man is very well spoken and sounds very excited to be starting his professional career in Denver. The Newark, NJ native was cheered loudly at the draft (in Newark) when his name was called and I think he'll receive an even more vocal welcome in Denver when he makes his Nuggets debut.

Late addition to the team:

Towards the end of the Josh Kroenke and Masai Ujiri press conference at Pepsi Center last night, the two got word that another trade had become official. The Nuggets sent a future 2nd round pick to the Los Angeles Lakers for power forward prospect Chukwudiebere Maduabum, who Masai referred to as "Chu Chu" to the media on hand. He's a 6'9'' and 210 lb. prospect from Nigeria. He's just 20 years old and actually shares my March 19th birthday (has to be good news!). Ujiri likes Chu Chu's athleticism and I think the Nuggets will likely store him overseas or in the D-League to get some seasoning.

Your newest Nuggets:

Andre Miller - coming over from Portland to re-join the Nuggets.

Kenneth Faried - the No. 22 pick in this year's draft.

Jordan Hamilton - the No. 26 pick in this year's draft, comes to the Nuggets via the Dallas Mavericks.

Chu Chu Maduabum - the No. 56 pick in this year's draft.

Just curious did we make that trade with the lakers for that 2nd round pick?

Ujiri is the Man!

First NY and now Portland!

JR sign somewhere else, so we can get a guy who is not so Bi-polar.
Trade Chandler and Felton for another shooter.

I like the "Chu Chu" pick

Even though I have no idea who he is. I like it simply for the fact that Ujiri was a scout in Africa if I’m not mistaken (for the Raptors) and I’d be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he might know a thing or two about this kid that perhaps some other teams might not… could he be a steal? I’m optimistic!

I like any draft when we get a Chu Chu in the second round

Love it!

I didn't say he hated us

It was just what I’d assume if he did hate Denver. He was my favorite player when he played here, I play just like him on the court, and yes I dribble for a long time and can’t shoot 3 pointers.

He doesn't like getting traded. Period.

He often lights up Philadelphia as well, although that may be more attributed to their subpar PG defense than anything else

I don't like how tipping has become expected

It’s supposed to be a littl eextra for going above and beyond, not for just doing your job. Thats what a wage is for.

I spent a long time working in restaurants and managing a pizza shop so I know how it goes, but I would never expect a tip from someone simply for doing what I’m paid for

The problem is because the wages have been so supressed

tipping is part of the salary in those fields now. I know I tip more than I probably should but my level of tipping does vary based on service.

I know servers make less

The tip credit in the states is $3.02. Think about it though. All that does is cheapen the prices on the menu. Restaurant owners can make the prices lower on their food and beverages because thier labor cost is lower, so really you’re not tipping at all, just making up the labor difference and allowing for better marketing on the menu

Also, his contract:

We could always not pick up the contract (unlikely), Or, if we pick it up, it becomes a 7.5 M expiring, which could be lucrative tradebait to any teams who are trying to reduce salary because of the new CBA, which is likely to be unfavorable to teams with high payroll.

Basically, look for the Nuggets, who could be pretty far under, to fleece some rich teams of some talent in exchange for salary come mid-season next year, assuming of course there is a season.

Signatures are for wimps.

I'm not sure what point you are making

But the big difference between Miller and Felton is that Felton has indicated that he could not be cool coming off the bench. Miller said it’s all good.

So. All things being equal, I’d take a happy locker room over pouting, etc.

Just being facetious (although I guess semi-serious)

A lot of talk recently has been that it would be stupid to pay your back-up PG that much money, so we trade him for one who will get more.
Even if he is happy to play off the bench, it still has to be stupid.

It's a good point

About the money. But PG is probably the most important position and Miller is a known talent with Karl and the rest of the organization. He’s a great passer and pushes the pace and is pretty good about not looking for his own shot, but he can have his moments.

I’m one with it. But if we lose some of our RFAs, I might be more on board with your quibble about the money.

I'll agree with you

I was thinking the same thing. Everybody was worried about paying a 28 year old that much to come off the bench but now everybody is estatic about paying a 36 year old to do the same. What happened to some sort of deal for Felton For a lottery pick? And why didn’t somebody take Al’s salary or something? Hahaha dreaming I know

Ujiri said the Nuggets were “very aggressive” in trying to trade into the lottery, but that they couldn’t control the other side (meaning teams turning down deals).

It’s obvious that this is Lawson’s team for the future and Miller will serve as a trusted veteran guy who the team can lean on for awhile when need be. I think it was a very smart trade by the Nuggets and if Jordan Hamilton pans out the way the Nuggets hope – it might be a great trade. Remember, Hamilton possesses lottery type talent, so while the Nuggets didn’t get into the lotto they got a lotto talented guy.

I’d like to have him. Let Faried season a bit as a rookie and bring him along.

I dunno. I know K-Mart’s last contract sucked from a money POV, but I think he is (was?) the soul of this squad.

Haven’t been paying attention. He may be on the outs. I dunno.

I actually like Kmart quite a bit. If you get to know him in person he so much different from his on court persona.

That being said….I’m not sure he would take what the Nuggets would offer at this point. I think he’d take less to be on a championship contending team…but one that’s mid-rebuild? Not so sure.

I told you something special was gonna happen

Remember when I said, I have a feeling? I knew it. Masai is the type of GM that works the draft. Plan on this becoming a regular exercise every June.

I think Hamilton dropped because of a mix of shot selection, other risers, athleticism and rumors of him being uncoachable, but there’s no way he should have dropped to us.

We should pick up Andre’s option. He’d be a great mentor of Ty and would be perfect for the illogical two point guard lineup Karl obsesses over. K-Mart and J.R. should be gone.

Overall, the best draft I’ve ever been a part of in any sport. It was a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. I will always remember this day, and I know that years down the road all Nuggets fans will too. Faried is gonna be a beast and Hamilton will be as solid 6th man as any.

Congrats to Masai !!

Luck and and skill have come together. Faried is a solid pick and the kind of player GK loves.
Never expected Hamilton to drop to 26, and just think of all the dots Masai had to connect to improvise that variation on the Felton trade. Really heads up work, although Hamilton may be the kind of player GK loves to bench.

GN will recall that I was hoping for Tyler and Jenkins. Well it happened, but In Golden State! And they may end up looking very smart after getting those guys at 39 and 44 respectively. Not ideal for Jenkins behind Ellis, Curry, Williams and now Klay Thompson, but Tyler should play.

I don't see other coaches on more succesful teams giving him anymore room for error

I’d actually wager that JR will have a shorter leash on these teams that have developed discipline. margabelle is right, it’s a two sided issue with Karl and JR, both have some right and both have some wrong. JR was too hyped based off athletic talent but in the NBA there is so much more than atheltic talent, you need to acquire fundamental skills. JR should have went to college for a few years and developed those. I’m fine with the player he is and would like to re-sign him but don’t expect him to become an all-star after so many years in the league(and the Nuggets have shown the most faith in him btw).

mil?(just dropped a penny on Sjax),
nola? (wld they want him back?, can they even spend money, when are they moving to KC?, … now im depressed),
orl (dont think they have money, but they need an athletic slasher, i guess that’s supposed to be arenas),
pho (think they prefer character guys),
was (if young goes in rfa, jrs a better than young, and can shoot from distance which they need),
sac (they seem to like unnecessary 2 guards, haha)
LAC (gordan, but can he stay healthy, and who is the 6th man)
re-sign den (makes a lot of sense, but denver has choices to make $ wise and Jr isnt first priority)

out of those, i see Was as a very very strong contendor for Jr. (wall, big city, good role, but real young and he prob wants to win)
Then probably Den (he wants to win, has a place, home, etc. )
Cle (they cld use a guy like him, wld he want to be part of a bare cupboards rebuild?)
Atl (if Jamal goes, Jr wld make a ton of sense)

if they could find a way to sign him. I think JR would do best to go to a team with a proven track record in their coach and veterans. A team he knows won’t put up with his crap and if he goes by their mantra then he will have a good chance at being part of something special

Kenneth Faried- Undersized Power Forward that dominated rebounding in the Ohio Valley
Jordan Hamilton- Jump shooting chucker with some character concerns but also with potential
Andre Miller- 36 Year old Journeyman point guard who once scored 52 in a game, good player but again he is 36

Lost
Raymond Felton- Player who was having one of his best seasons as of last year

Remind me again why this is one of the best drafts ever? I guess I am not trying to be the Negative Nancy around here, but I don’t exactly see why everybody is so pumped. I like Faried, but again he is 6’8". I have no doubt he can rebound in the NBA, but the dude couldn’t score against guys his own height in the Ohio Valley, let alone when hes going up against Bynum and Gasol. Hes like a more agressive Sheldon Williams.

I think so much of it has to do with us being accustomed to the Nuggets trading away their picks. For so many years our roster was virtually the same minus a small insignificant trade. But with Melo gone, and Kmart and JR likely gone, it gives us a chance to think about new players coming in and shaking things up. I think that explains the overall excitement.

According to this article there are an average of 8 non-lottery picks per draft that end up panning out. Faried will have a longer career and more of an immediate impact than 10 guys drafted in front of him.

The Felton trade wasn’t about basketball, it was about people. We couldn’t have Felton screwing up the locker room with his bitching about playing time and not starting, so we shipped him to Portland for Andre Miller who both knows our system and is at a point in his career where he’s willing to sacrifice minutes to win games. We also picked up Jordan Hamilton in that deal, who has talent 10-15 picks better than where he was taken.

Fantastic draft.

Farried alone is excellent. Hamilton is a gamble worth taking. Gamble based on whether he’s coachable or not.

KMart is gone. He should go to Miami.
JR should be gone. I know a lot of people love him, but he’s not a guy that can have one season without causing turmoil. I think he’s gone.
Chandler is likely gone too.

The new CBA will impact more than anyone can imagine. Nene will get a bulk of the available cash.

Lawson/Miller
AA/Forbes
Gallo/Hamilton
Nene/Faried/Anderson
Mozgov/Koufas

That’s the team we should expect whenever they play again.

Always remember Goliath was a 40 point favorite over David.

If the Nuggets lose K-Mart, Chandler and J.R. that’ll be a big blow to the team. Kenyon and J.R. were a big part of the team and the identity of the WCFs team will be pretty much gone. I would like to see Denver turn Chandler and/or J.R. into some assets if they can – losing them for nothing in return would be hard to swallow.

Chad Ford's draft grade for the Nuggets: B

From Ford’s piece:

Analysis: The Nuggets had a busy night. Not only did they trade Raymond Felton for Andre Miller, but they ended up with three draft picks.
“I won’t factor the Felton/Miller trade into their draft grade. (I’ll let John Hollinger pick that one apart.) But I love Kenneth Faried. He’s got great energy and can really rebound the basketball. Faried probably won’t be a star — he may not even be a starter. But given his relentless enthusiasm for playing defense, it’s hard to see how he doesn’t stick in the league.

Jordan Hamilton is a bit harder to fathom. I like the value. But on a team with Danilo Gallinari and most likely Wilson Chandler, a restricted free agent this summer, I’m not sure how he ever gets into the game. As for Chukwudiebere Maduabum … he’s a big-time project."

Somebody has to play 2-guard

and it might just be Wilson Chandler (our smallest of three small forwards) who ends up playing the two behind Afflalo if JR Smith takes off. It seems like Ujiri & Kroenke are just working to give themselves and George Karl as many options as possible going into the New NBA next (or next, next) season.

They’ve done exactly that, and are supremely positioned to pick up a bargain shooting guard via free agency while everybody else struggles to find cap space for their existing team. And I don’t see them picking up the team option for Andre Miller’s $7.5 million 2011-2012 salary by July 30th. They may sign him to a lesser deal, but I can’t imagine Miller is exactly stoked to play for the team that dumped him in favor of Allen Iverson’s worthless ass even if it is under new management.

Wow, ya I know what you mean.

I liked having Felton as a backup. He made it known he would rather start, but I didnt see it becoming a distraction last year for the team. Honestly, Felton’s numbers pre trade were better than CB’s, and he was our starter. I would have been fine keeping Felton, and I’m actually a little shocked at the hate that he’s getting on this site. He played hard, had a good attitude on and off the court, and seemed like a competive individual in interviews- which is probably why he wants to start. I dont blame him for that and I wish him luck in Portland (except against the Nuggets). If he was willing to play backup, I would have kept him. But the Nuggets also got some good value for him, I think it was a win-win for everyone involved.

Dre Miller--Staying around?

I really have a problem with his complete inability from 3 point range. But he does everything else very well, such as setting up Oops and driving. Average defender. Has he lost a step at 35? To his credit, one of the most durable players in NBA history.
Jason Kidd, earns his pay in his late 30s as a 3 point clutch shooter who can still pass well. I don’t think Dre will ever learn the 3, with his funky shot.

I am so tired of "Cheap Kroenke"

Once again, we’ve got Kroenke cheaping out on the nuggets. Trading Felton who makes $7 million for Andre Miller who makes $7.8 million next year. Cheap. Could have had Lamar Odom at $8.2 but Kroenke went cheap, as usual.

And drafting two first round picks with guaranteed contracts? Cheap again. They could have packaged those two picks for someone like Rip Hamilton.

And why hasn’t he used that trade exemption from the Anthony trade yet? I’m sure we could get Rashard Lewis or Gilbert Arenas with that. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

I did some reading...and essentially it's the same as the NHL system

which has a “percentage/revenue based team by team cap with few exceptions to exceed” and a hard cap over that. 62 million was the number thrown out there.

The players called the “concession” of guaranteed contracts faux negotiating because they already had guaranteed contracts and it they said you cant get back what you never gave up.

Love This Draft!!!

Faried is going to be a beast on the glass and D.. and I for one am higher on Hamilton than most others.. he’s got a major chip on his shoulder after falling the way he did. I watched quite a few of their games last year, kid can flat out play… now I just gotta hope GK actually uses him.

pretty unclassy of Rick Barnes to dog Hamilton

If the rumors are true. He is only 20 years old and was rated much higher than his pick #, what is the point of his college coach trying to affect his future other than sour grapes? Barnes is supposed to be the adult in this situation, and if he had anything to say he could have waited until after the draft. I hate this NCAA double standard where coaches can do and say as they please, get out of commitments and contracts when they see fit, and think they are bigger that they game. Barnes was messing with Hamilton’s livelihood, and stuff like that is why many players don’t stick around more than 2 years.

So he could fall to us ;) it did cost the kid some $$, but hopefully it does indeed provide him the extra motivation to work hard and be more of a team player to prove the naysayers wrong, if Coach gives him a chance to play like he did with Forbes.

I missed some of the smaller homework-type assignments, but I participated in class, did will on the tests and demonstrated I knew the material, so he gave me an A.

Exactly. Coach Barnes job is to make Hamilton a rich NBA player

Unless Hamilton slept with his wife, I think any badmouthing the coach did is unconscionable.

pick 10 1.92 mil
pick 26 0.92 mil.

cost him about a mil or less per year,

if he plays well he’ll make that back in no time in his 2nd contract.

sucks for him but great for Nuggets

They handed out player bios on Chu Chu last night, sounds like he’s a total prospect with good athletic ability. Not sure he’ll ever make the roster with the Nuggets though.

some insight on hamilton

and I can confirm, his demeanor and attitude changed significantly from Fr to Soph year. Much improvement all around (thanks to Artest?!)

http://www.foxsportshouston.com/02/24/11/Jordan-Hamilton-a-man-of-mystery/landing.html?blockID=417118

“I think my main changes have just been maturity and growth,” Hamilton said. “This year, I’ve really been listening to Coach (Rick Barnes), and what he’s been teaching me.”

The healing process from last year’s results began immediately after the season. Following a freshman year where Hamilton admits that he played selfishly often jacking up bad shots coming off the bench made a full apology to the team.

“He wanted us to know that he wasn’t like that,” said senior forward Gary Johnson.

“The last year, the way that things went, the outcome just wasn’t good at all,” Hamilton said. “I thought if I came in with a new attitude, and a new demeanor about myself that our team could be a lot better.”

In another classically mysterious Hamilton move, he spent the summer hanging out with NBA bad boy Ron Artest and says with a straight face that the experience helped him mature, both as a person and as a player.

“He really helped me out,” Hamilton said. “He’s a great dude. He told me to be patient.”

He also told Hamilton to take one or two dribbles to get his shot, if need be, and to turn up the defensive volume.

“Those are some of the things that I’ve been doing,” Hamilton said. “And so far, it’s worked out great.”

by skithebert on Jun 24, 2011 12:50 PM MDT reply actions

I think Artest kind of gets a bad rap.

Because of his previous outbursts. Dude is all kinds of weird but I think he’s probably not as bad a person IRL as he comes across. He does a lot of good in the word charities and such. And really BEST postgame interview EVER

I love the Dre/Felton trade

After Felton bombed it in the playoffs, I don’t think I will miss Felton too much (as all the Portland fans are missing Dre as we speak). Felton was good on the pick and roll (but was horrible at FTs even though he shot 90% in NY), but I really preferred it when we had a change of pace with Billups/Lawson. We are pretty much bringing that back with a PG who can post up. Honestly, I miss a PG who can post up and Miller/Billups were the best at doing it.
Miller ages well, his jumpshot does not rely on a jump and he can still control the pace well. The fact that we also got a potential Paul Pierce out of the deal makes me really excited. Lamar Odom would not have helped us much and he is more of a distraction with that Kardashian show anyway. If the Odom deal went down, we still would need a PG and we would pretty much keep Cheeseburger Harrington’s ass parked on the bench. At least use the man and don’t keep him out of shape more than necessary.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

The only thing I didn't like about the Felton trade

Was that we weren’t able to include Harrington and get his salary off the books. If Ujiri can get rid of Harrington even if we have to give a future draft pick as well, I will be pleased with it.

by nsink on Jun 24, 2011 1:20 PM MDT up reply actions

I need to put myself into the "waive/trade Dre Miller" camp.

Simply put, he costs too much money. I admit, the guy has still got some game. After watching J-Kidd this past playoffs, you won’t find me being the one to discount the aging PGs of this league. However, there are a lot of better ways we can find to spend that money.

Just of the free agents this year, we could probably pick up guys like Carlos Arroyo or Sebastian Telfair for a FRACTION of the price, or look at unrestricted free agents like J.J. Barea, Aaron Brooks, Goran Dragic, who may be a little more expensive, but also a little more worth the price.

I just can’t find myself a reason to keep Dre at such a high price. If he’d be willing to let us waive him and re-work his contract for 2 years and 4-6 mil, then I’d be alright with it. But 7mil is a LOT of cap space, especially with the new CBA we have coming up. Plus, an unguaranteed contract is so valuable in the NBA, which I bet the FO considered when trading for him. I have a feeling Ujiri has something more up his sleeve for Dre.

GK loves older, savy PGs that can take the pressure off of him with good decisions

That is Miller in a nutshell. He is smart, a vet and a very good passer. Win, win for GK. Plus, he comes at half the price of Chauncey…which is good for Stan the Man. Andre is staying in DV.

I don’t like Andre as a starting PG, but I do like him as a 20-25 minute back-up at this point.

by Pusherman on Jun 24, 2011 2:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I like the deal

more so for Hamilton, I’m keen on the point that neither Felton or Miller are long term Nuggets and in the short term I see the two as a wash, but now we have a potential steal. Plus Ray doesn’t want to be here so avoid drama now. And if we dump Miller who do we go for as back up PG?….AC????

I truly believe Hamilton has the potential to be better than anyone we currently have on our roster.

The attitude problems and available minutes are the only thing that concerns me, but if we can get past that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up an star a few years down the line.

Just hope he becomes that star while he’s on the Nuggets, not after we give up on him and let him walk or trade him away.

The good and bad about Miller

First the BAD:
Dre CAN NOT SHOOT A 3 TO SAVE HIS LIFE, therefore as many of you remember teams take 2 steps inside the line, which is why the line got clogged with him here.

Now the Good: He can throw a lob pass better then anyone I have ever seen. Plays good defense, averages around 9 assists a game, and his midrange bank shot is money. Pairing him as Lawson’s backup is smart it’s just the reverse of what Dallas does.

Oh by the way I HATED MILLER WHEN HE WAS HERE BEFORE!!!!!!! But I thinkhe’d be a perfect fit off the bench now.

Miller will push the pace and ball up court

He just does it differently than TY, who will try to out run and outquick everyone, whereas Miller will pass the ball far downcourt after a defensive rebound outlet quicker and as accurate as anyone. If you have Faried in there with his only job is to patrol the paint for rebounds (which we haven’t had in a while) in a better defensive system (Stop Switchin’) they should be able to have more fastbreaks like the pre AI Nuggets.

Masai! Masai! Masai! Masai! Masai! Masai!

Now I’m a believer.

MU knows what he’s doing. This draft went as well as could be hoped for.

1) Addition by addition. Getting Faried is a major coup. He guards against losing Chandler. He also does something that we lacked in playoffs against the Thunder – he’ll go get the rock. You cant do anything if you dont have the ball.

Getting Miller is perfect for this young team. Miller is smart, a wily veteran of 134 seasons, or close to it. Ty just has to be Ty and Miller will help him flower.

2) Addition by subtraction. Felton had to go. He’s got talent but his attitude was cancerous. He thought, and thinks, about himself all the time. I never believed anything positive he said because he would undo it in his next breath. Other than that, he was great!

We have some real prospects here and could go about the business of ridding ourselves of chaff or at least deep benching them. Think, Harrington. And, I love JR, but if he comes back, fine, if not, fine. Too polarizing for my comfort level.

I’m tired of polarizing. I think that Dallas won title because everyone was on the same page. It matters.

We go forward with a very viable core. The core should include Nene, Gallo, Ty, AAA. I also think that Moz, yes Moz, will become our core center. I like the trimmings too → Will (?), Miller, Faried, Koufas, Birdman (?)

Our roster provides us with size, speed, shooting, youth and a bit of moxy. Karl has the difficult task of melding this roster. We’ll see.

He needs some more experience on his coaching bench, even better if they have head coaching experience. Kurt Rambis should be available here shortly, a blue collar guy as a player who could teach the bigs a thing or two

sgiustra

1. Faried does not guard against losing Chandler. They play completely different positions, have completely different skillsets, but I agree that he will rebound.

Dre is good, but I think you’re overreacting a little bit on what he’ll be able to bring.

2. Felton didn’t want to be here, but his attitude was nowhere near cancerous. We’ve seen cancerous, in the form of MElo, but Felton obviously made it a point to be classy about not wanting to be here. If you think he was cancerous, you may want to take another look around the league to see what a real cancer looks like.

I feel almost certain at this point that Chandler’s not coming back. I will say this, you better care about Hamilton, because he’ll be our backup SF going into next year. IMO, our core is Nene, Gallo, Ty, AAA, Moz, Hamilton, and if we can afford to keep him a couple years down the line, Faried.

Hey Agaliarept

Good points. But we’re not that far apart.

I exaggerated with Ray. I could have said he was like a tummy ache. Is that cool? Cancerous is too strong and yes, I did believe that Melo was cancerous an,d no, I will never take that back!

Yeah, Faried and Chandler are different but they could compete or complement with respect to minutes. They are about the same size.

I hope that we keep Will because I really dont get such positive vibes about Hamilton. Then Will could be backup small forward who can also slide to big guard or power forward in a pinch.

But I do believe that if hamilton is a bust, we have enough depth to cover for him. In that case, Hamilton is a luxury.

Hey, ultimately, I hope that Ham is good enough to become part of our core.

So we better hope Al comes back strong. We really need that stretch 4 in our lineup.

Andre Miller cried about coming off the bench in Portland until Nate McMillan made the switch. Imagine what’s going to happen with GK jerking him around. Miller has started 93.5% of the games he’s played in his career, coming off the bench is going to be a difficult adjustment for him just like it was in Portland.

Jordan Hamilton is a slow SF without elite athleticism. I suppose if everything goes right he can end up similar to Wesley Matthews Jr. with an inferiority complex. There’s a reason he tumbled down draft boards.

Kenneth Faried is a one trick pony who will do well to have a career like Reggie Evans has had. Not a bad player at his draft range, but far from an upside selection.

I thought Denver would be able to do a lot more with Raymond Felton. They got much older and less versatile at the position. Andre Miller has 33K+ minutes on those knees, and he’s never been out of the first round of the playoffs. Denver couldn’t get a lottery pick or a swingman to replace JR Smith at least with Felton?

I don’t think Denver necessarily did anything wrong with their picks, Masai did the best he could with what he had in this cruddy draft. But their future still hinges upon their ability to re-sign Nene and field a semblance of the high octane, energetic team that closed the season out so well. Trading Felton for Miller takes two steps back, IMO.

NBA Draft corollary #4

“If your team should draft an offensively challenged forward who is skilled at rebounding, he must be compared to Dennis Rodman”.

Kenneth Faried might be Dennis Rodman minus the crazy; but also minus the once in a generation athletcism, elite defense, and (I’m going out on a limb, here) five rings.

by joov on Jun 25, 2011 11:56 AM MDT up reply actions

kinda hard to have 5 rings before you play a single game

once in a generation athleticism too, was Jordan not athletic? what about Kobe? Shaq? Barkley? Funny how all those played within a few years of each other.

Dennis Rodman was as singular an athlete as you can find in NBA history, just like Barkley or Shaq. Jordan was not a singular athlete as there were reasonable facsimiles before (Thompson) and since (Kobe, Wade). Rodman was one of the most well conditioned athletes ever to play in the league, one of the best leapers (quickest leapers) and a destructive force defensively against a wide array of opponents.

People seem to forget these things and young fans especially regard his career as ‘the guy who rebounded a lot and wore a dress’. So any good rebounding forward who can’t toss a ball into the ocean = Dennis Rodman. Let’s see Kenneth Faried defend SG’s and C’s in the same game. LOL!

by joov on Jun 25, 2011 2:40 PM MDT up reply actions

yea like you knew dennis rodman was gonna be a hall of famer when he was drafted.

just admit you have no idea how any of these guys’ careers will turn out and neither do we. stop coming on here acting like you know what’s in store for these guys. you don’t.

by skithebert on Jun 25, 2011 4:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Of course we have an idea how these guys will do in the NBA. If we didn’t know, why even have a draft? Why not just assign players randomly? Scouting isn’t a flawless process but most of the time if you pay attention to precedent and know what to look for – you can form an intelligent opinion on a player’s development and future.

I’m fairly certain that Kenneth Faried will not be “Dennis Rodman without the crazy”. Maybe Reggie Evans without the nut grabbing.

was

rodman really that singular of an athlete, he wasnt a lebron coming out, or a shaq if tested as athletic as them he wldnt have come out late in the 2nd

by nsink on Jun 25, 2011 5:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Rodman was drafted low because he played at a NAIA school.

And, yes, he was that singular of an athlete. He’s one of the very few players in NBA history who could capably defend the best at every position. He defended Jordan, Malone, ‘Nique, Kemp, even some centers later in his career. He never got tired, he was one of the fastest players up and down the court, and had the best second jump I’ve ever seen personally.

by joov on Jun 25, 2011 6:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Just because a player was drafted low doesn’t mean your team’s low draft pick will be successful. Yes, there are non-lottery draftees that go on to have fine careers – hall of fame careers in some cases. Newsflash!

Scouting is what we’re talking about, and the fact that Faried is nothing like Dennis Rodman athletically.

by joov on Jun 25, 2011 11:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Faried had more rebounds in college than Duncan.

He seems to have athleticism and passion from the highlights I’ve seen. I expect him to excel on defense and the glass. What he has shown so far will translate to the NBA.

The draft

Was great fun for once.

This whole trade with melo and moves is dependant on Gallo becoming a consistent 22 ppg scorer, imo. We have a good TEAM, but in the playoffs in the nba, you gotta have that guy.

Faried is nice, Hamilton won’t see much time unless Chandler leaves. We gotta resign nene and hope koufos or moz develops. Still a lot to do this off season, including playing basketball next year.

This draft wasn't supposed to take us over the top

What it did do was hedge for the losses of KMart and JR. We did become deeper and I still hope we can somehow re-sign everybody, but the reality is we hedged well for our future.
And yes, Gallo can be a 20 ppg scorer that we want him to be, that was his first playoffs ever and he started heating up as the series went on.

Great draft

The nuggets didn’t get better compared to last year, but when half the team isn’t under contract, I wouldn’t really expect them to. However, they are set up for success in the future.

JR and Kenyon are gone. I want JR to stay, but with GK here it just won’t work. They can’t coexist. Kenyon is old and extremely injury prone. Faried is twice the rebounder Kenyon is and i am guessing less likely to be injured.

Hamilton will be a pretty good Jr replacement IMO. Hamilton is the same size as Joe Johnson, just a wee bit bigger than Jr. Better rebounder than Jr, but slower cause he is more of a sf.

Hamilton, faried and miller>>>JR, Kenyon and Felton. Hamilton and faried are going to make 1/4 of what Jr and Martin would. Miller is as good as Felton, worse than Ty. Miller is okay with letting Lawson have the keys. He provides a completely different look for the 2nd unit. He will need to be replaced soon, but that’s better than Felton walking for nothing this offseason.

If you watch Faried Highlights

despite his lack of height, he can dunk the ball just as fast as anyone in the league, his jumping ability suggests he can really get up to the basket in a hurry, I think that will translate as well to the NBA. Also I think he has the ability to be more than a Reggie Evans type of player because he has a big frame unlike Evans, he can also become a great one on one defender, or a good help defense player with his leaping ability, he might be able to contribute to every aspect of the game over time, offensively I could see him maybe averaging 9-11 points, if he did that then he would be an offensive liability.

I’m not sure I agree that Faried has a larger frame than Evans. Evans, at the time he was drafted, was measured 1.5" taller than Faried and 25 pounds heavier – with a 2" advantage in wingspan. Their standing reach is about equal. Physically, Faried is a better athlete. He’s quicker in space and has better leaping ability. But Evans had better lower body strength and was bigger.

by joov on Jun 25, 2011 11:06 PM MDT reply actions

I admit he might not be the next Rodman

but if he even does turn into the next Reggie Evans without the nut grab, Evans still averages 12.8 rebounds PER 36, and who is to say Faried won’t develop his game in other areas, just because he is a hustle guy now does not mean he can’t develop an offensive game, he might even turn into a very good defender.

Denver vs. Portland

Denver killed Portland in the draft. I was a huge Blazer fan and the grade Portland’s trade received from the fans was somewhere around a C. Congratulations you got a great point guard that will flourish in this coaching environment. I quit the Blazers because the Blazer owner and Gm, Brandon Roy, was just getting out of control. I am now following the Nuggets to see if this organization can go the distance without a mercurial superstar. Good luck Denver, I am with you.

Isn't anyone bothered by the fact

That Andre Miller is no better at shooting the 3 than……say……Nene.
He’s The most durable player in the NBA, he’s a great passer, he is solid all around. But….
Look at how aging guards like Jason Terry and Jason Kidd, show there worth in the playoffs. By winning games with dagger 3 point shots, that nail the coffin. Also, Chauncey won the finals MVP with the 3.
The importance of the 3 pointer in the playoffs is underestimated. A team that drains the 3 over 40%, like the old Spurs can ride that to the finals.
Andre Miller is so bad from 3 that he won’t even try unless it’s a shot clock issue. This could hurt us in crunch time.

by Nuggburg on Jun 26, 2011 10:06 AM MDT via mobile reply actions

by JR15 on Jun 26, 2011 10:47 AM MDT via mobile up reply actions

i'd say that's better

at least he’s aware he can’t shoot it and doesn’t. that’s better than having a chucker on your team that makes <30% but shoots 3’s constantly (gilbert arenas/). i would hope that GK doesn’t play the 2pg lineup in crunch time but if he does, Lawson will have to play as more a shooting guard. He has shown he’s capable of hitting 3’s.

Miller is better at breaking down defenses and getting in the lane than any of the old PGs except maybe Steve Nash. I wish we traded Felton for Nash instead, but oh well. Maybe come the trade deadline we could flip Miller and somebody else for Nash.

do u think he going to be taking crucial shots in the 4th?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
