Golden Nuggets: Qualifying offers and draft talk

Winding toward the NBA Draft this year we get some CBA talk, some qualifying offers made to some fan favorite Nuggets and some more draft talk.

Star-divide

The Nuggets made some news today by extending qualifying offers to three players. Two who are at the end of their rookie contracts (Wilson Chandler and Arron Afflalo) and one who is coming off a one year deal (Gary Forbes). Also, in a bit of great news for the Ty Lawson fans, the Nuggets went ahead and picked up his option for next year. You can look at the qualifying offers made to both AAA and Ill Will here on Hoopshype (QO's are in Yellow) as well as what Ty will be owed next season (thanks to my buddy Nate Timmons for the information and the heads up). Good move by the Nuggets. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the two restricted players will be back. While I anticipate that Arron Afflalo will make a good faith effort to stay with the club, in my own opinion the restricted free agent market may overpay Wilson Chandler. We shall see what the future holds.

Also, we are two days away from the draft and I've seen so many mock drafts that I no longer think in anything but team draft order and the number 22 is burned into my brain. You all know my position on the draft so we won't go over it here. I will say that I'm consistently amazed that there are so many mock drafts with every major sport (well, maybe not baseball ... at least to this extent). It's really amazing the type of hard work that people put in to these drafts. I tip my cap to you guys who know all this information because it would be extremely impressive to me if I wasn't so jaded.

Here are your Golden Nuggets. Pay particular attention to some tid bits I saw on twitter and from Wojnarowski about one Raymond Felton.

On with the Links!

Paige: Cheaper payroll could put Nuggets in good shape - Woody Paige, Denver Post
Woody Paige talks about the upcoming CBA and the Nuggets position to take advantage. However, what Woody doesn't say is ... if the projected "hard" cap were to come to fruition (as the owners want it, $45 million) the Nuggets would only come in $5 million under as currently constituted (without re-signing J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin) So the fabled "cat-bird seat" would be not as advantageous as Paige surmises unless player salaries were rolled back big time.

Nuggets make contract offers to three players; pick up option on Lawson - Benjamin Hochman, Denver Post
Ben Hochman from the Post talks about yesterday's qualifying offers as well ask the Nuggets picking up next year's option on Ty Lawson. All good moves, but the qualifying offers merely put both Afflalo and Chandler into restricted free agency. Was a bit surprised that there was a such thing on a league minimum salary (Forbes) that there would be a qualifying offer (again, thanks to Nate for the info).

Twitter is an interesting vehicle for information. While scanning my feed I saw this curious tid-bit from Eric Pincus

Eric Pincus
The Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings are two teams with interest in prying Raymond Felton(notes) from the Denver Nuggets, league sources said. The Nuggets believe strongly in Ty Lawson(notes) as their point guard, and Felton, with a $7.5 million expiring contract, is expendable
I'm sure there's an element of pre-draft gobbelygook being said, but it's interesting that people have picked up on this with the Lakers. Also, I'm not sure what the Kings would have to offer for Felton other than maybe Tyreke Evans. Doubt that would work though. Any ideas fellow Stiffs?

Place your draft speculation here in this column today. We will have fresh daily columns up going all the way through the draft.

Anyway, have a great morning everyone

How can the owners want a 45M hard cap?

Half the teams in the league would have to disband: 45m is less than half of the Magic’s current salary, and the same more or less goes for the Lakers and Mavs. The Heat’s Big 3 alone make 44.7M, leaving 300K for the rest of the squad.

The players need to come down some, but the real problem is the re-distribution of wildy varying local TV, ticket and merchandising income along with luxury tax revenues. The right combination of salary limits and revenue sharing would allow all teams to at least break even with a soft cap of 55 and lux tax from 56 to hard cap of 65M.

Even then the Mavs would all get a nice pay cut as reward from their ring.

by slader on Jun 21, 2011 8:33 AM MDT reply actions

45 million is an opening position

not where they expect to end up. Average payroll in the NBA is roughly 70 million per team. If they cut it by 10 million, then you have made up the $300 million dollar loss the NBA says they have now.

I would agree

the cap will have to be around 55 to 60 million in order for there to be “less” carnage.

Those QO's are a slap in the face.

I understand that they’re preliminary offers just to get it out there, but seriously, $3 million each. That’s an insult to both of them.

$5 million is probably a little more realistic to me.

Although if no one offered more than the $3 million for either of them the Nuggets would get a couple of steals.

It's not a slap in the face

that is the collectively bargained agreed to amount with the union. The players now have a choice. They can sign the offer, play for one year and be a free agent next season. They can solicit better offers from other teams now, with the chance Denver matches. Or they can negotiate a longer term deal with the nuggets that pays them more. It is up to the players what they want to do – take less now to be unrestricted next year, or sign up for a longer term deal to get more money now.

I'd say the Chandler would explore the RFA market to see who will match

there are teams out there who have cap space that “may” overpay.

Idk

If Chandler really doesn’t want to be here (rumored to be the case) then he’d be better off just taking the QO, playing out this season as the 6th man roll, then bouncing next year.

Jeff and I were discussing that possibility via the telephone last night. That would be his best option if he really wants to head back to the Knicks, but there are a couple teams that could go after him – like the Nets (not sure he’d be crazy enough to sign there).

All three of them should explore it the RFA market.

Might as well drive up their own value even if it means the Nuggets have to overpay for Afflalo (I think he’s the only one they will overpay to keep). That’s not the best thing for the Nuggets, but it would be a smart move for the players. There really isn’t any down side that I can think of for them to at least take a look.

If Felton is under contract and forced to play for us next year..

Why bother trading him now unless we get a great offer?

They'll trade him for what they can get

either now or by the trade deadline in order to:

1) avoid losing him for nothing
2) not have him poisoning the locker room because he is unhappy off the bench.

The only thing that bothers me about Odom is you are helping the Lakers improve their biggest area of need.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Jun 21, 2011 9:58 AM MDT up reply actions

But weakening their front court

Which is a major strength of theirs, but without Odom would actually potentially become a weakness, given the fragile nature of Bynum.

I like Felton… he’s a tough SOB. I wish he’d be ok splitting time w/ Ty and mentoring him.

by stiffy on Jun 21, 2011 10:01 AM MDT up reply actions

It may weaken their front court

but would greatly improve their back court. I think they’re looking to mix it up this year and adding a quick, young, reliable, non-Derrick Fisher point guard could be a good improvment even if it means giving up Odom.

I think it's fine trading him by the trade deadline

But I’d give it a chance to work before automatically trying to trade him.

1. You may have more leverage around the trade deadline
2. Losing a guy like Raymond Felton for nothing isn’t that catastrophic – it’s not like losing a LeBron James for nothing.

Agreed on improving the Lakers – PG was one of their biggest weaknesses, but some trades are mutually beneficial, and Odom would improve us way more than losing Felton while I’m not sure what it would do for the Lakers – Odom is actually a big part of that team.

what we need to do

is get Wilson Chandler signed for next year, wait until a month into the season when the clippers (whoever SF they draft) fails, and trade them Wilson Chandler for Minny’s unprotected 2012 first. they might bite, if they think they are competative next year except for the SF slot.

It says the NBA want's the NHL model

but in the NHL you can’t exceed the cap.

The worst thing in the world is if there is a “cap floor”. That is where the Colorado Avalanche are at now….

We shall see, but from what it seems, the hard/soft cap is very similar to what we have now.

Here is the Mock Draft I participated in for "Slam Dunk Central.com"
22. Denver Nuggets, GM Nate Timmons (Denver Stiffs, Denver Nuggets SB Nation) – Markieff Morris, PF, Kansas

The Nuggets "War Room" was all smiles and high fives spread like a Dirk Nowitzki cold as the Morris twin somehow fell to the Nuggets here. General manager Masai Ujiri finds a quick replacement for Kenyon Martin as the defensive minded, but offensively capable Morris provides the Nuggets with a very nice asset for the suddenly big, athletic, and young Denver front-court.

The Nuggets needed help at the shooting guard and small forward positions as the futures of J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler are also in doubt, but a talent like Markieff Morris cannot be passed up and he fills another need at the power forward position.

Pretty much wishful thinking … you can read it all here: http://www.slamdunkcentral.com/2011/06/21/slam-dunk-centrals-2011-nba-mock-draft-picks-19-24/

With Denver likely to lose JR, Chandler and Kmart plus need to do something with Felton (altho I think GK loves RayRay), the best move (and balanced) for Felton is to trade with Kings and ask for Casspi (takes Chandler’s place) or J Thompson (w/ Mozgov gives Denver great C rotation and helps keep Nene at PF – replacing K Mart) and their 2nd rd pick. Even tho both Mozgov and Thompson are slower centers, the half court O and defense would be better with the trees in there.

Then draft Selby at #22.

he’s an athletic combo guard that can penetrate. He’d be an instant spark plug coming off the bench (initially). He’d be a very solid player to develop. At #22 we aren’t getting many impact players right away anyway and with JR likely gone, he’d be able to play a little this year (granted not much). His ceiling is much higher than most available at #22. Oh yeah, and he’s tough.

not sure I see what’s not to like about him.

Can I beat a dead horse?

We need to trade Al Harrington. We have a young team and a good nucleus and need to maintain as much financial flexibility to resign those young pieces and attract free agents in the future when we are better able to determine what our needs are. We need to take a 2-3 year approach here, even if it means being a little worse in the long-haul. Additionally, with the new CBA coming up, and without really knowing what that would look like, the less useless contracts we have on our books, the better.

Harrington’s Salary:

2012: 6.2M
2013: 6.6M
2014: 7.1M
2015: 7.6M

We could upgrade this position with any number of younger options and have more money to spend elsewhere. Even if we end up paying someone else money, I’d rather have it go to a more needed position, or to a younger player or one of our own FA’s, than to a 30+ year old PF who plays 10 minutes a game.

Signatures are for wimps.

but

by JBnuggs on Jun 21, 2011 4:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Last two are 50% guaranteed

And we don’t need to be giving up assets in order to move Harrington. If an opportunity arises in which they need to move Harrington in order to clear cap space, they can do that then. Until then, no need to go through gymnastics to move him. He’s quality depth who is slightly overpaid. No big deal.

And we do have a pretty good idea what the new CBA is going to look like, based on the leaks of the last few days.

Unbelievable.
Would the Kings be willing to send the No. 7 pick to the Nuggets for Raymond Felton and the No. 22 pick? The Kings have had interest in Felton but it’s probably going to take them giving up the No. 7 pick to get him. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Nuggets grab Jonas Valanciunas or Bismack Biyombo if they could get up to No. 7.

Felton rumors heating up, apparently.

Luckily, we probably won’t be getting Jimmer with the 7th pick if we do get it, but I’m not sure we should be going after another young player than get a proven vet for Felton instead. Draft’s not strong enough imo.

Burks, Thompson, Biyombo, maybe even Walker or Leonard could all be available. The addition of any of those guys could propel us into conference finals contention again if they pan out the way people think.

eh what do i know

but i’m not too thrilled with any of them. the only guys i’ve seen play a lot are Burks and Thompson since I went to CU and now am at UT. As much as I liked watching them in college they both have serious faults. Burks really needs to develop his outside shot and Thompson can’t hit a shot that isn’t 2 feet from the basket. He’s undersized, lacks a refined post game, and is an awful, awful FT shooter. Both could certainly turn out well, but it’s likely not going to be for a few years.

Biyombo smells like a bust to me, Walker probably won’t be there at 7 but he might be a good choice for us. Still seems like the classic shoot-first PG with limited defensive skills.

I would be much more excited if we put together a Felton package that landed Josh Smith. I think there’s reasonable talent to be had throughout the first round and if you’re not trading up into the top 3, I’d rather they just stay where they are. Maybe jump up a few spots if they must to grab somebody they’ve targeted.

by skithebert on Jun 21, 2011 9:36 PM MDT up reply actions

If the talk is true

And Sac is looking to take on a veteran PG (I’ve read that there’s also been discussions for #7 to SA for Parker) then I would seriously, seriously consider some sort of Felton for #7 trade.

There’s a few reasons why I think the Nuggets make for a more attractive team than SA to trade with. First, Felton’s age and injury history vs. Parker’s, both of which favor Felton. Second, is the contract status. Parker is just now starting a 4 year/$50M extension, pricey. Felton only has a year left on his contract and any extension he’d get would be far south of what Parker is making, I’d guess 4/$30M with the new CBA would be about right. Third, Felton is a much better shooter than Parker, something the Kings need to space the floor with Evans. Fourth, the Nuggets are in a much better position to absorb some salary back in a trade. SA is already locked into $57M next year, even before Parker’s extension. The Nuggets are only at about ~$24M without Nene and Felton but with QA’s to Afflalo and Wilson. Sacramento doesn’t need to send anyone out to absorb a large salary, they’re far under the salary cap, but if they’re able to shed a little money I’m sure they’d be happy to.

I would do any of the following: Felton straight up for#7. Felton for #7 and Casspi if Sac wants to dump that salary. Felton and Harrington for #7 and Udrih. Udrih has a pretty substantial salary but moving Harrington offsets a good chunk of it and Udrih would be a great backup PG, allowing us to go big with both our picks.

At this point I’d rather not go after Josh Smith simply due to his salary. With a new CBA coming, I’m extremely hesitant of moving our best movable asset for a guy making big money on a contract that’s prior to the new CBA. While I like him as a player and think he can offer us something, I don’t think he’s a great fit for us due to Gallo. I think Gallo and Smith are best suited to play small ball 4 and time at 3. I don’t consider either a true PF on the defensive side which poses a problem with having both guys on the floor (which is what you’d expect as being two of our better players) at the same time.

If we have #7 and #22, we suddenly have A LOT of options. We can either wait and see if one of the bigs slides to #7: Kanter is said to be dropping a bit, Valanciunas is sliding due to buyout issue (I have no problem taking him at #7 and waiting a year for him), or Vesely could be a great guy to pair with Gallo at the 4 spot using his athleticism and hustle on the defensive end. Leonard could be Josh Smith 2.0 without the contract and a higher offensive ceiling, or we could go really safe and take Singleton who I believe is a near lock to be to a shutdown perimeter defender. Burks and Klay Thompson could fill our hole at 2 with different skillsets (I’d take Klay over Burks). Or if we really want to roll the dice, we can go with a very high upside guy like Tristan Thompson or Biyombo. This would then allow us to take the best available at #22 (stash in Europe if necessary, like Motiejunas or Mirotic) or a backup PG (depending if we take Udrih back). Or… we could try and package the picks for a higher pick, Minnesota at #2 might bite for #7, #22 and Mozgov. We could then trade #2 to Cleveland who really wants Derrick Williams for #4, #32 and JJ Hickson which would allow us to replace Mozgov for Kanter (a slam dunk in my opinion) while adding another decent pick and another 4. Or we might be able to move #7 and #22 straightup for #4 if the talk about Cleveland wanting Valanciunas and gaining a little value out of it. Regardless, moving Felton, someone I think we’ve all agreed is simply a tradable asset at this point with no long-term future in Denver, for the #7 would open up a TON of options for us and allow us to position ourselves however we wanted to for the future.

Nice Analysis

Could be the draft that we do six trades just to get an extra player this year and a 2012 first rounder

by rockridge on Jun 21, 2011 10:34 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree, this could be the year for us to be very active.

Everyone says this draft is weak and I understand their point. However, this just underscores the point that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I guarantee that at the in the #4-9 range, there’s at least 1 player that every team loves due to the variety of players and skillsets. There’s some very intriguing big men (mostly Euro) with different games and there’s some guys with elite skills but questionable secondary skills (Leonard, Singleton, Walker, Burks, Thompson, even Jimmer). I think if we’re able to liquidate the assets we want (Felton for sure, maybe Mozgov) and see if anyone gets desperate, we might be able to cash in this year and next year. We’re in a great position due to those assets and our salary cap situation to make a big splash to set ourselves up nicely this year, and next.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 10:47 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed

And I really think the goal is to get one ot two players they like and stockpile picks in 2012.

2012 Draft will be one for the ages

by rockridge on Jun 21, 2011 10:50 PM MDT up reply actions

If the 2012 draft is really our priority

I’d have absolutely zero problem with that. I agree, it will be a very strong draft, not sure if it’s gonna be a 2003 draft, too early to say if there’s that many legit superstar prospects, but I’d take the chance.

If that’s really our strategy, I’d move heaven and earth to get that unprotected #1 of Minnesota’s via LAC. And we make a great partner for them. They need a PG so Felton would be a perfect option for them. We could take some salary back to sweeten the deal, say Ryan Gomes. So I would say Felton for Gomes, #37 this year and Minnesota’s unprotected 1st in 2012. It’s a huge roll of the dice but I don’t see Minnesota’s pick being worse than #7 or 8 and in a stacked draft, that thing could be worth a goldmine.

by JBnuggs on Jun 21, 2011 10:36 PM MDT up reply actions

You must remember

Felton only has one year left on his contract, therefore, he could potentially walk after serving only on year in Sac Town. Parker on the other hand, just got a contract extension which guarantees he’ll be there for a while. It’s hard to imagine Sac Town giving up the No. 7 overall pick without a guarantee that Felton would be there for more than one year, plus I doubt they’d do it without the 22 pick as well.

And you’d take Klay over Burks? Come on now!

I actually think Felton's contract situation is a good thing for SAC

As they would own his bird rights (not they likely need it due to their salary cap situation) and no matter what, his next contract will be far less than Parker’s. If SAC is willing to move #7 for Parker, I think they’d have to consider Felton as well.

And yes, I’d take Klay over Burks for our team. Burks is a slasher, Klay is a shooter. I have a lot of faith in Ty’s penetration skills so I believe Klay’s skillset fits with our team better. However, I wouldn’t take either as I believe Afflalo is superior to both of them.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 11:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Burks is gonna be a beast

Totally underrated, and you heard it here first.

I think Bird Rights can only be obtained after three years of service with one team though, but again, they have to POS-I-TIVE that they can re-sign Felton or else they’re putting themselves in a very precarious situation.

Yes, Bird Rights go to the new team

So there’s absolutely some value there. How much is up for debate considering SAC’s current salary number who knows how aggressive they want to be with free agents.

One thing that I think should be considered as well is the Maloof’s current financial situation. To put it simply, it’s not good. I absolutely believe that money could be a big factor in any move. If we’re willing to take back some salary (like Udrih or Casspi as I stated above) they’ve be more amenable to moving the #7. Also, they may be shortsighted and not want the #22 due to the guaranteed contract so we may well be able to just purchase the pick for #3M. There’s a lot of variables here where I think it’s very feasible for us to walk away with #7 and #22 by moving Felton to the Kings.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 11:22 PM MDT up reply actions

I like Burks

But I think he has Corey Magette written all over him. Not a bad player by any means but his shooting, defense and intangibles are all fairly iffy at the moment. He certainly has the penetration skills and athleticism to be a very good SG, and shooting is certainly the easiest of all the core skills to improve, but maybe it’s due to my analytical nature, I always bet on the forecasted mean of a player rather than the far right tail. It’s just about playing the odds. If you get lucky and the guy turns out awesome, fantastic. But you can’t expect it.

If Washington is willing to do #6 and #18 for #4, that means we’d probably have to do #7, #22 and Mozgov for #4 straight up. So would I move Felton, #22 and Mozgov for Kanter and Casspi or Felton, Harrington, #22 for Kanter, Casspi and Udrih… probably.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 11:40 PM MDT up reply actions

I know that seems a lot to give up

But I’m with the mindset that we gave up Carmelo, our franchise player, to get a lot of these assets from NY. If we can’t turn them into a franchise player, we’ve lost the trade, by a wide margin. We traded a dollar for a bunch of quarters and dimes, we need to find a way to package that change into paper money again. I would rather us at least try to get that dollar back, despite the risks associated with a Euro big man who hasn’t played competitive ball in over a year, at the hardest position to fill, then to watch these quarters and dimes piss away over the years as we struggle to sign them to extensions or they lose value because they don’t live up to their potential (Gallo, Moz, WC being the main possibilities).

Roll the dice, take our chances. I can live with that.

doesn’t this rumor of tony parker for a high draft pick conflict with the spurs draft style?

by skithebert on Jun 21, 2011 9:59 PM MDT up reply actions

I think the Spurs see the writing on the wall

Their title window is closing and they’re now trying to retool as quickly as possible without a complete rebuild. Parker has the most value of any of their core: Duncan is locked in till death and Ginobili is tough with his injury history. SA also has some big salaries locked in with Duncan, Ginobili, and Richardson. The #7 pick could quickly add some much needed youth to their team that would at worst, slightly hurt their immediate future but set themselves up for the long-term, especially if they don’t have to take much salary back.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 10:27 PM MDT up reply actions

My guess would be Alec Burks

He’s definitely a Spurs type player…and he’s the only one except maybe Valanciunas who fits their mold.

I'm actually guessing Walker

He obviously goes against the grain of SA history but I think they’re in desperate need of a playmaker who can take pressure off Duncan and Ginobili. Walker has the pedigree any team would love with his drive and competitiveness and he has as high a ceiling as anyone in this draft. Perfect world? He turns into an Allen Iverson type player. The only other player that needs the ball in his hands on that team is Ginobili and he’s able to play off the ball so beautifully that i think Walker would be a great fit.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 10:50 PM MDT up reply actions

I think thats a good guess

Because they’re talking to Toronto and Sac Town, which are the two teams most interested in Walker in the top seven at this point. Plus, if you get rid of Paker, you kind of need a PG unless you think Hill is that guy.

I’m really interested in seeing how this one plays out. The Spurs don’t do stuff like this that often, almost seems as if they’re a bit desperate.

It also doesn't seem very like SA

To give up a guy who’s in the top 3rd of the league in terms of point guards to draft a rookie, unproven point guard who may or may not make it in the league.

Pop knows he can find guards later in the draft and the only reason why he’d trade Parker + try to move up is because there’s 1. a rare guy with size who would never fall past the lottery (Valaciunas), or 2. an exceptional talent whom they feel is undervalued – and the only guy who fits that mold is Burks – who was very efficient last season despite being CU’s only option – and even more efficient as a freshman with reduced usage.

Oh, did I mention..

He gets to the line often and hits a high percentage of his FTs and he rebounds at a very high rate for a shooting guard – way above average.

Also, if you look at the Spurs’ roster, they prefer shooting guards who are around 6-6 and long. Manu and Jefferson are getting up there in age.

I'd be really surprised if they went Walker

Pop would roll over in his grave before drafting an Iverson type player. I question Walker’s playmaking skills too – he was unable to generate any offense, unless wide open, against Butler’s smarter defense. He not only chucks up a lot of shots – he doesn’t make very many of them.

yea

and USA finally won in 08 after being ousted multiple times in a row by guess who?….. yep, a non US team

by JBnuggs on Jun 22, 2011 1:01 PM MDT up reply actions

I wonder how we do when we send our best players

US rules basketball

You take Dirk
I will take Kobe

by rockridge on Jun 22, 2011 1:10 PM MDT up reply actions

dude

we did send our best players… and still lost ….. Melo, D wade, Lebron, Duncan….

by JBnuggs on Jun 22, 2011 1:50 PM MDT up reply actions

That US team in '08

Almost lost to a team that was just guys from Spain, if you give me the whole world, I’m sure I could put a team together that beats the US handily

by free7694 on Jun 22, 2011 1:56 PM MDT up reply actions

seriously

an All World team (every other country but the US) would probably destroy team USA

by JBnuggs on Jun 22, 2011 4:04 PM MDT up reply actions

It's completely dependent on rules

Play FIBA rules, World probably eats USA alive. Play NBA rules, USA eats World alive. Even though it’s basketball, it’s not apples to apples.

by TChizza on Jun 22, 2011 6:21 PM MDT up reply actions

that's

actually a really good point

by JBnuggs on Jun 23, 2011 11:02 AM MDT up reply actions

Would you trade Felton

For the lakers four second round picks?

by rockridge on Jun 21, 2011 10:25 PM MDT reply actions

No

2nd round picks are very tough to hit on. If we even hit on 1 solid NBA player out of the 4, you’d have to be pretty happy given the draft’s history and I’d want much better odds than that for Felton. The Lakers 2nd rounders aren’t even that great, they’re basically lottery tickets at that point… but instead of a $1M prize, you’re looking at a $50,000 max prize. Not worth it in my opinion.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 10:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Probably agree.

I just realized how many second they have. Therevis always a great player that is still there in second round

by rockridge on Jun 21, 2011 10:32 PM MDT up reply actions

I think "great" is taking things a bit far

Nobody in the 2010 draft has shown much yet, Landry Fields is probably the best player so far. Dajuan Blair from 2009. Chalmers or Jordan from 2008. Marc Gasol from 2007. Paul Millsap in 2006. And etc. There’s usually 1, maybe 2 players in the 2nd rounder each year that pans out to be even above-average, much less great. Those are loooong odds. I’d also add that the first Lakers pick is #41. Of the above group, only Gasol and Millsap were picked after #41.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 10:39 PM MDT up reply actions

I doubt Sac would move their 2012 1st in addition to #7

And the Lakers pick is probably going to be in the late 20’s which really depresses its value. I mean if the Lakers would be willing to move their top 2 2nd rounders, 2012 1st and Steve Blake for Felton I’d at least consider it but it would definitely not be my first choice. I’d want a better chance at a higher impact player.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 10:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Not sure what else we have to offer at the moment to pry another a 2012 first from Sac

Unless we’re open to moving Gallo or Lawson (which would make no sense for Sac or us if they’re already taking Felton). All our other players can’t be traded at the moment. The only other option would be us willing to take several of their bad contracts: Udrih and Garcia mainly and that seems like a bad idea.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 11:00 PM MDT up reply actions

I would, definitely

But I think there are better options out there. Still, what if we landed Goudelock, Norris Cole, Tyler and Greg Smith with those picks? That’d be one hell of a second round.

It's just so hard to forecast

The first Lakers pick is #41. There’s at least a decent chance that Tyler and Cole are both gone by then which are the two of that foursome I’d really want. If I’m gonna be making multiple picks, I want guys with very high ceilings, even if the chance of them cashing in on that upside is <10%.

by TChizza on Jun 21, 2011 11:28 PM MDT up reply actions

flip felton for #7 pick

then send pick to Ny for Melo. How funny would that be?

Wait, just wondering.

Have any of you guys actually gone to Sactown Royalty (the Kings SBNation blog)? While half of us here think we’d be losing the trade if we sent the 22 with Felton, the Kings fans mostly don’t want the deal, even WITH the 22. Some of them even think Udrih is better than Felton.

Although they raise some good points, mainly that Felton means nothing for them long-term, considering he’s an expiring contract.

I was first, now I get to be 241st

I have the feeling something fun will happen Thursday, and as the 240 previous comments show, anything is possible.

However, in the name of consistency and sang- froid in the face of much speculation, I stick to the following guns:

1) beg borrow or steal a pick early in round 2
2) Bring home Charles Jenkins and Jeremy Tyler

I might be alone on this

but if/when Felton is gone, I would like to snatch Greivis Vasquez somehow to backup Lawson.

It should be noted

the backup pg free agent class this year isn’t exactly stocked.

Obviously it would be amazing to land JJ Barea, but Im pretty sure he’ll be back in Dallas.

So we’re left with the likes of Carlos Arroyo, Rodney Stuckey, Acie Law, TJ Ford, Earl Boykins and Sebastian Telfiar

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
