Bobcats at Nuggets recap: MOZGOV!!

Photo

We officially have a new nickname for a 40-point blowout: MOZGOV!

Star-divide

On top of the point guard controversy that's brewing in Denver, Nuggets head coach George Karl now has some serious answering to do as to why he hasn't played rookie center Timofey Mozgov. Because even though Mozgov had just six points and four rebounds in 10 garbage time minutes, he showcased why the Knicks were so excited to have him and so reluctant to let him go in the Carmelo Anthony trade. Mozgov has good basketball instincts, a soft touch and he's a giant. An absolute giant. Listed at 7'1", Mozgov is at least two inches taller than the supposed seven-foot Kosta Koufos, but he clearly has more game than the third year pro out of Ohio State.

So curious was the Pepsi Center crowd to watch Mozgov play that most of us stayed through the fourth quarter despite this game being over at halftime. And Mozgov didn't disappoint as he set some tough screens, cut to the basket and worked his way into the paint against the Bobcats' joke of a backup frontline.

Beyond the 10-minute Mozgov cameo, the best thing about the Nuggets victory over Charlotte was their balanced attack. Every player scored in this game and seven did so into double digits. And that's without Danilo Gallinari playing, arguably the Nuggets best scorer alongside Wilson Chandler and J.R. Smith. I think I'm in agreement with Nuggets fans everywhere when I say we're excited and anxious to see how Gallinari fits in with this team as it grows together.

Of course, any positive spin put on this game has to be done with a grain of salt thrown in. After all, we played a dreadful - and I mean dreadful - Bobcats team. How this squad was within earshot of the Eastern Conference playoffs even with Gerald Wallace is beyond me. It's more a testament to how pathetic that junior varsity conference continues to be than anything else.

But even though I should have been all smiles after watching the Nuggets post a 40-point victory on the board, I couldn't help but be a bit sad about the current state of the NBA. Seeing the Pepsi Center half empty (don't for a second believe the Nuggets' recorded attendance number of 14,255), I thought this might be a microcosm of what's to come as more and more "stars" collude to play in the league's biggest markets. With Wallace gone, there isn't one compelling reason to watch the Bobcats play. And scarily, I can say that about 10 teams right now.

I'll dwell on the negatives another day. For now, we in Nuggets Nation should be proud that our new-look Nuggets are 4-1 since Carmelo Anthony's departure and pro basketball in Denver is worth watching again.

The View From the Not-So-Cheap-Seats...

...the Nuggets seem to scrambling to bring back their season ticket holders. A season ticket holder brought out the game ball. Another was featured during one of the stupid timeout gimmicks hosted by "Big" Mark Randall. And the reminder that season tickets can be renewed by tomorrow was served up on the scoreboard repeatedly throughout the game. I wasn't swayed. It's not the Nuggets fault that NBA tickets across the board are way too expensive, but the Nuggets could help start a trend of bringing the prices back down from the price stratosphere.

...when the Nuggets had 20 points with five minutes still to go in the first quarter, you just knew they'd be putting up big offensive numbers tonight.

...when Arron Afflalo went down with a nasty twisted ankle in the first half, you could hear a pin drop inside Pepsi Center. If there's one player beloved by all, it's Afflalo. Fortunately, AAA was able to recover and play well in the second half...but that ankle's going to be sore on Thursday.

...D.J. Augustin is smaller than Ty Lawson, making it even more remarkable that Larry Brown and Michael Jordan saw fit to draft him over Brook Lopez a few years ago. At best, Augustin is a career NBA backup.

...when Gerald Henderson clobbered Afflalo on a layup attempt in the second half, I couldn't help but be reminded of this infamous moment in Henderson's Duke career. Maybe the guy is just a dirty player.

...I saw a number of replica Nuggets jerseys from the 1990s, like Jalen Rose, LaPhonso Ellis, Rodney Rogers, etc. Could it be that real basketball fans are back? If so, great! But how will they pay for these tickets?!

...the entire atmosphere felt like an ABA game: a sparse crowd, cheesy, poorly thought out in-game promotions, unrecognizable players on the opposing team, etc. The Nuggets - and the NBA - are going to have some serious work to do after the lockout to bring fans back to this great game.

...and yes, no one was happier than me to see Mozgov and Koufos on the floor together. Maybe Karl should try playing Lawson and Raymond Felton together plus Mozgov and Koufos, and throw Rocky in as the fifth?

Non-Stiff of the Night

-Too hard to choose. As we've seen for several days in a row now, the Nuggets are too balanced to pick one "player of the game". Kenyon Martin had another great game...as did Nene...as did Afflalo...as did Chandler...as did Lawson...as did Birdman...as did J.R....

Stiff of the Night

-Stephen Jackson: "Captain Jack" showed up just long enough to bitch at the refs, shoot 3-10, turn the ball over four times and finish with a Bobcat-high plus/minus of -22.

Parting Shot

Many will point to the Nuggets loss of a true superstar as a problem, but I'm loving watching the balanced contribution of this team...and so are the players. Seeing these guys play up-close, it's clear that they're all on the same page and want to win now. And hey, the four-seed is just a few games away...

Exactly GN

The more I hear from Karl the more I think he was trying to do the best baby-sitting job he could with Melo. Seriously, defense? We as fans have been talking about it for years but now the team is really doing it. All of a sudden Karl looks like a great coach, Nene, Kenyon and JR all look like good players and everyone in Denver has hope.

Here’s a hat tip to you Melo.

Thank you….
I haven’t enjoyed watching Nuggets basketball this much since our run to the WCF in 2008-09. We actually play fundamentally sound basketball. I’ll take a team who plays the right way all day over a me first superstar. I just hope that the Nuggets can come out of this month with 9+ wins. We’re gonna find out what this team is really made of during that 4 game stretch (NO, ATL, ORL, MIA).

A better recap title would have been “BITCH SLAP!” or possibly “DEFENSE, BITCH SLAP WITH RINGS ON!” but thats a little long.
this team is starting to remind of that Detroit ’04 team. That teamed played the best all around basketball ive seen in the past decade. keep it up nugs.

by NuggBuckets on Mar 3, 2011 8:28 AM MST up reply actions

Point guard controversy?!

Can there still be such a thing after tonight’s game?! Hand the ball to Lawson and watch ‘em go! Sure, he’ll need plenty of guidance, but it’s his time to shine. Doesn’t a player with that much talent, especially one who’s been waiting patiently and working his ass off to do everything asked of him, deserve the opportunity to develop the rest of the way? If he doesn’t get the job, he can’t do the job.

If Felton can’t handle coming off the bench, move him along. He did a tremendous job with Stoudemire and the Knicks, so who can blame him if he wants the chance to show he can make it work permanently as a starting PG for a contender?

by LongWindedHank on Mar 3, 2011 12:38 AM MST reply actions

Lawson after the Bobcats game:

"Were playing together and we’re winning right now. That’s fun for everybody. There’s no sticky hands out there. We’re passing the ball, getting everybody involved. It feels a lot better when everybody is happy. The bigs are happy. The wings are happy. Everybody is touching the ball, and that’s the way basketball should be played."

I was going to make the same point. The game before, Lawson had the flu. Last night, he’s healthy and puts up 10 assists. There is a dimension to his game that could be special. Felton doesn’t have it.

I agree with GN

As GN said tonight was "F*cking sweet. F*cking awesome. F*cking fantastic. I thought J.R. would get a little more loving for hitting the 6,000 mark! And seeing Birdman play well (10pts in 5 mins or something like that) always gets me pumped! I dont get why a lot of the Stiffs here are freaking out about this big guy Moz how many times have I heard “you cant teach height” cause the little action I saw from him tonight and in New York was far from spectacular don’t get me wrong he is good and has potential but dang you would think he was the best player on our team.

People are just excited to see him play. If Karl would play him more, he’d be just like any other guy. All the hype is created to force Karl to give him more minutes. In my mind it’s almost like peer pressures – in this case it would be more appropriate to call it “fan pressure”.

I should also mention that the fans want him to play more because. He’s a young 7 footer with potential who hasn’t been given much of a chance in the NBA – something we haven’t really had in Denver for a while.

I see nothing wrong with it at all, the guy might be a little overrated by now, but I think that it makes him feel more at home – something that a foreigner can really appreciate. And frankly, wouldn’t you want all the players on your team to succeed? I think that’s all this is about. That and the excitement about this new, young team!

Did you see how high the kid got on the failed alley-oop?

Sure, he missed the finish but he caught that ball damn near the top of the backboard. Even if it’s just 5 minutes a game we need him getting experience out there.

by NuggBuckets on Mar 3, 2011 8:33 AM MST up reply actions

Mozgov played better after that first few minutes

I think Karl knew that Mozgov would hurt the team in the first few minutes after his debut while getting into a rhythm, and that Karl needed a blowout where that first few minutes wouldn’t decide the game.

Mozgov started to get it going a little in the fourth, and now with those first few minutes out of the way, Karl can play him more.

I don’t know who here listened to the audio link of the postgame, but Karl just sounds giddy about Mozgov about the team youth and talent of the team in general, and about the way everyone is buying into playing team basketball.

When Gallo returns

In order for teams to beat Melo they have to have a perfect shooting night. If your top guy or “superstar” is having an off night well then you will have no chance against this incredibly deep Nuggets team. For instance tonight, Jackson was off, loss by 40. I don’t Think the Nuggets will lose to another losing team again. This team is just too deep. There are 6 guys this team can legitamately rely on to score: Gallo, Chandler, JR, Nene, Ty, Felton and the chances of every single one of them having an off night is just slim. Add in the defense and the team is just hard to beat. The teams that will gave the advantage are the vetran ran teams with a deep roster a la the Lakers and the Spurs. I am excited to see this team face off against a high seeded playoff team to really guage what these guys are capeable of. I love that we don’t have to worry about losing a 20 point lead late in the 3rd quarter anymore… Instead of relying on Melo to keep us ahead we get to watch 6 or 7 guys expand it. I love it. We’ll see how they do on their second test of the b2b’s with the new guys.

i had no feeling they were going to give up the lead whereas the old nuggets i would have to keep watching intently cause I knew at some point the 20 pt lead woulddrop down to 5pts real quick.

I found myself turning off the TV when the Nuggets were up big pre-trade

Because I couldn’t stand the idea of them losing such a big lead, and I didn’t enjoy the way they played when they were up.
I watched every second of last night’s game and loved it. I loved seeing the ball moving and how aggressive the Nuggs played on D even after being up big. It looked like, other than having new guys on the floor, that the Nuggets weren’t even concerned with the score. They were just having fun.

I used to get blasted to no end when I posted some things about Melo

I would talk about how they were way better when he scored 18-23 points than they were when he scored 35. I would post how I thought they should trade with Rockets for good roll players in Scola or Martin. All I got for that was post after post of calling me crazy. Look now everyone loves this team and they all have an I told you so attitude about Meelo. Human phsyche is weird.

by Gasus on Mar 3, 2011 9:35 AM MST up reply actions

It's easy to say you were rignt, when the team is winning

If the team starts losing does that make you wrong?

My point is that unless we see how this team plays over the long term, I’m not sure you can say it was about Melo leaving. Also, many thought we couldn’t survive without Chauncey either. So does this mean Chauncey was bad for the team? Clearly not. We also moved Shelden Williams, AC, and Balkman.

If Melo was the only player that left, and everything else stayed the same, then I think you would have a more compelling argument that Melo was the sole reason the team was struggling. (Even though we were winning more than we were losing).

Not starting an argument. But I’m seeing a lot of…look how much better the team is because we are winning. If the team were losing, missing shots etc.

Comparing Shelden Williams, AC and Balkman’s impact as apposed to Melo’s isn’t even valid. Last I checked Balkman, AC and Shelend weren’t holding the team hostage the entire year over trade demands. And everybone knows what Chauncey’s impact on the team was. If it wasn’t for him Melo probably never would have made it out of the first round.

It’s clear to anybody who knows anything about basketball that this team is better off without Melo and with the addition of the players from the Knicks.

I think

that prior to this season, Melo was playing hard and was much more an asset than he was this season. There is no doubt that the team is playing better now than the last games before the Melo trade. I think, however, that the ceiling of the team constructed prior to the Melo trade was higher than the current team, if Melo had been committed to the team. When you were saying that Melo was a problem for the team years ago, you were incorrect. This season, correct.

I'm with you Gasus.

I came here several times and said that the team looked better when Melo wasn’t on the floor. That he worked great for us in the past, but with the current players, he just wasn’t complimentary to the team.

And just like when you brought it up, people got all butthurt about it.

Now the same people who were butt hurt about it are the same ones that are chanting “who needs melo” or saying they knew it all along.

A little early yet to dig into my dish of Crow,

but I am putting my bib on. Only 4 games with the new cast, the only three wins coming at home. If they can get a road win on a back-to-back tonight, I’ll be even more impressed. I agree this team is fun to watch (120 points when the leading scorere has 16?? That’s what I call a balanced attack!), and record-wise we are not missing our “super star” at all, but I think the sample size is a little smal to start saying they are better without Melo.
I look forward to being proven wrong!

by groblix on Mar 3, 2011 11:12 AM MST up reply actions

What would our record be if Melo had signed the extension and stayed?

It would probably still be 4-1 since the all star break, with the difference being we would have lost by 20 to Portland instead of 1. This upcoming road trip will tell us if the team is indeed better now than before.

My girlfriend and I decided that we wouldn’t buy any tickets this year because of the uncertainty surrounding the team. Now I want to see at least 3 or 4 games before the playoffs. Good win last night. Guess the thing that stands out to me is that Birdman had his hands and concentration back. Think the comp from the new big guys is good for him.

Hope AAA is alright. He is a warrior, so I think he is gonna try and play. Need to win a tough road game. And Utah is going to be a tough road team. That team is all kinds of desperate.

Think the Nuggets need to run pick n rolls until they drop. Utah bigs are awful at guarding them. Nene and Al Jefferson is going to be a war.

Like to watch this team. Now it is time to win on the road.

Good write up Andrew

and was that a slight criticism of Karl I detected? At least we didn’t see the four guard lineup he deployed the other night.

That was a great game last night. When I told my wife the score, she asked why they had run it up at the end. Thinking about it, they weren’t running up it. It’s just that their depth is so good that there isn’t much dropoff when running in the 12th guy.

The issue of superstars has been mentioned by several people. The question is, what is the ceiling on this team? They are winning now, and it is fantastic. Can they win a playoff series? More than one playoff series? They are winning now because their second unit is a lot better than the other teams second unit. What happens in the playoffs when teams are only running a 7 or 8 man rotation? Can they wear them out and win at the end?

it’s going to come down to officiating during the playoffs. Sorry, but I think we all know that part of the reason there have been 7 teams winning championship is that those include the Celtics and the Lakers. I hold out little hope of seeing another team win in the finals when the commissioner makes comments like

“My ideal championship? The Lakers vs The Lakers ". Why didn’t he say “The Nuggets vs The Nuggets” and this was during the WCF…..pretty lame.

I think the commissioner wants superteams. And he doesn’t care about having parity

I got to see Mozgov's first points and boards as a Nugget!

Also, kid’s got some fire. He got a board late in the fourth and threw a ‘bow at Eddie when he swiped at him. He’s gotta remember that this ain’t Russia, though, and if he connects with one of those wrecking elbows he is gonna be suspended for a good long while.

Anyway, excellent win, though it was a bit disconcerting to see the emptiness of the Can overall. I would say no more than 10,000 people showed up for the game which was definitely disappointing, given that it was a BOGO 55+ (Golden Oldies) offer on tickets. I took my 64-year-old stepfather with my brothers and he loved it.

One thing we all took away from this win: it is almost unfair how the Nuggets can run you to death with Ty Lawson, then Raymond Felton, THEN bring in JR Smith to bomb 3s on your head. I have no idea how other teams are going to be able to handle a group of players who can all go off for 15+ on any given night.

Finally, HOW ABOUT THAT OOP TO TY LAWSON?! That was probably one of the greatest plays of the season. The crowd went nuts and was only louder for Birdman’s oop from JR.

My take

Went to my first new Nugs game last night. My take, same as Andrews:

- Charlotte is horrible;
- Nugs are deep and balanced;
- Moz = huge…he needs to play alongside Nene to see if there is real value there. He has pretty good foot work and looks solid…but it is really hard to tell against scrubs during garbage time.
- the Nugs third team could have beaten Charlotte’s first team.

While the rest of the NBA quickly turns into a Circus act,

The team basketball has returned to the Nuggets, and is a dangerous threat to the league.

The superstar factor is greatly overrated to the NBA, unless you feel like seeing your team on ESPN.

This team is now playing real basketball, not NBA basketball, and they are going to go on a huge run because of it.

Boykins may be my least favorite Nugget of all time. For every one time he shot us back into a game, he shot us out of one 10 times. Good god he was horrible.

And of course Josh and Masai….One more request please no more superstars, I’d rather we spread the mega-bucks out amongst 12 solid players.

Let’s say the Nuggets re-signed Melo. And the team stormed through the WC and into the Finals, would people still not want a superstar?

Playoff runs do a lot.

I agree with you, its tough, but look at what the Rockies have been able to do.

NBA is different, yes, but not all superstars in the league now were superstars when they were drafted.

I do believe this Nuggets team, with some national exposure in the playoffs, have the capability of becoming huge with fans with the way they play.

I think OKC is a little different.

That franchise already had a history from Seattle. They just relocated the team. And Durant was already on his way to being dubbed a superstar.

FIBA

Durant was on his way up the star ladder, but his role in FIBA took up a huge notch. He was the face of US Basketball pretty much, and there were no other major stars (sorry CB) to draw attention away from him.

Of course we want a superstar..

But one that plays hard every night, is committed to the team and doesn’t choke when it the going gets tough.

Melo got disenchanted and it poisoned the team and the fans. This isn’t the first time it has happened and it won’t be last.

True superstars are RARE.. Right now. you have Kobe, Duncan.. maybe D-Wade. The Celtics do it collectively….

Melo and Lebron need to prove they can overcome tough times in the playoffs.
Stars win games… Superstars win RINGS.

The beauty of all of this

Is that a team this deep constituted for a whole season would probably result in some players getting frustrated with lack of minutes or statistics. But since these guys were thrown together for a quarter of a season with a 32 win foundation, it’s much easier to buy into a short term sacrifice on personal stats and sprint to the finish line. I think everyone realizes how good everyone else on the team is and they’ve just decided to roll with it as long as the team is winning.

I've been thinking about this

It could certainly make for difficulty this offseason. Would J.R. or Chandler want to re-sign for backup minutes? Will Felton become disgruntled and demand a trade? Is Forbes going to be willing to resign for 80 dnp-cd’s?

So

offer J.R. and Chandler five years and $20 million? J.R. is making almost $7 million a year this season – can’t see him accepting that. Chandler, either, really. They are both likely to get higher offers on the open market.

KMart I think is gone next year (Freed from his horrific contract)

Felton will probably get traded for a pick and to get AL harrington off our books

i would have no doubt that Melo would attribute Denver’s win to mainly himself as he carried the team throughout the first 2/3rd’s of season, tirelessly enduring his self generated drama, and ending with a nice hats off to himself. Big Market vs. Small Market

Can we please stop with this crazy talk? The only reason we are talking about this is because there is a perfect storm of sorts going on i.e. the potential lockout, several fantastic draft classes reaching free agency years, and twitter and media saturation. We should be thankful that there are this many superstars in the league to watch. Remember when Kobe, Tmac, AI, and VC were the best the NBA could do? Dark days.

Furthermore, most superstars are always going to want to play in the biggest markets. They crave the spotlight, the nightlife, and the women. NY, LA and even Miami (though its not technically a big market) are flooded with beautiful-wannabe-actresses-models. If you don’t think the women and the nightlife factor into their decisions then you don’t know NBA players. The rare exceptions are when a small market team happens to draft quality individuals who are also great basketball players: Stockton/Malone (although malone is a certified a-hole) and Robinson/Duncan. Utah and SA are also very well run organizations with solid ownership and management.

Furtherfurthermoremore, most small market teams are very poorly run (see Memphis, Minny, Cle). Big market teams have the ability to throw cash at the best coaches and GMs and to go further over the luxury tax. Would you rather be the CEO of a small, poorly run organization or the CEO of a large, well established company with equal/greater pay and greater benefits?

I don’t think any change in the CBA will deter stars from wanting to play in the big markets and we shouldn’t force players to play where they don’t want to. I, personally, would not want a player on my team who didn’t want to be here, but is stuck due to some sort of franchise tag. If stars leaving a small market team completely ruins a franchise, it is more an indication of the quality of the franchise than the ego of the departed player.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
