Golden Nuggets: Out west, you gotta go BIG...

Size rules in the Western Conference, so here's hoping Timofey Mozgov will be ready to anchor the center position. With or without Nene by his side.

The days of playing "small ball" in Nuggets Nation are over. Or at least they should be...

Star-divide

In a recent interview with the Denver Post's Benjamin Hochman, Nuggets head coach George Karl tipped his hand regarding the most likely 2011-12 lineup that Nuggets fans everywhere have been yearning for...

Hochman: If Nene returns, is your lineup Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and Nene?

Karl: I'm not going to write that in stone, but that's probably what we're looking at.

FINALLY!

Many - including me - have been fearing that Karl would stubbornly stick with Nene starting at center, the spot the 6'9" Brazillian has admirably anchored for several seasons now, even though he is playing out of position there. But now that Karl has come around to the inevitable starting five that best serves the Nuggets, it may be too late. After all, Nene's future in Denver is most uncertain at present and I'm not sure I like his chances of staying when I hear numbers north of $12 million being thrown around for his services.

The bottom line is that a Gallo / Nene / Moz front line absolutely will be able to compete with the Western Conference's elite front line trios, including the Lakers' potent Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, the Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki, Tyson Chandler (if he stays in Dallas) and Shawn Marion, the Grizzlies' Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol and Rudy Gay, the Thunder's Kevin Durant, Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins, the Spurs' Tim Duncan, Antonio McDyess and DeJuan Blair, the Trailblazers' LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum and Marcus Camby and the Jazz's up-and-coming big man foursome of Al Jefferson, Enes Kanter, Paul Millsap and Derrick Favors.

But even if Nene Hilario isn't re-signed and Karl is tempted to play small - as the coach himself routinely admits (and has shown) that he isn't afraid to do - the Nuggets should stick with their other bigs like Kosta Koufos, Kenneth Faried, Al Harrington and Chris Andersen and stand boldly tall. Because while the gimmickry of two point guards playing beside one another with Arron Afflalo at small forward may win you a few regular season games, it's not a long term solution nor a blueprint for postseason success. Lest we forget how ineffective the Ty Lawson / Raymond Felton duo was against Oklahoma City in last season's 4-1 loss to the Thunder in the playoffs (although to be somewhat fair, Afflalo was hurt for that series and Karl had little choice).

Simply put, with very few exceptions size has always mattered in the NBA. Sure, the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons were able to best the 7'1", 300-pound Shaquille O'Neal-led Lakers with the 6'9" Ben Wallace manning the center position. But that was the rarest of rare exceptions in a sea of evidence to the contrary. Last season's championship Mavericks were a big team. As were the 2008-2010 Lakers, the 2007-08 Celtics, the 2006-07 Spurs and so on.

Back to the do-we or don't-we re-sign Nene question, within the context of needing to play BIG out west...

I think all my fellow Stiffs are in agreement that we don't want the Nuggets to overpay for a 29-year-old previously oft-injured, overly sensitive (a $50-million, four-year contract is a sign of "disrespect"? Are you kidding me?!), and fourth-quarter fading power forward. But that doesn't change the fact that Nene had his best season ever in 2010-11, should be able to replicate, if not exceed, last season's production by moving to power forward and should be spelled more often with the development of Mozgov, Faried and Koufos plus a healthy Andersen and Harrington. Oh, and the top-tier Western Conference front lines aren't getting any smaller, especially when Dwight Howard gets traded from Orlando to Los Angeles for Bynum and Odom (you just know that's happening).

Throw in Nene's comfort level with Coach Karl and - in the absence of Kenyon Martin - his ascendancy as the veteran leader for the Nuggets' young big men, and you start piecing together just why re-signing Nene is of the utmost importance.

Just not with max dollars, of course.

I've come to believe that Nene getting pretty close to the Max

First, he is considered the #1 Big out there.
Second, there are teams willing to “overpay” because they need the cred. (like Denver with K-Mart) … of course where Nene wants to play is part of that.
Third, if you crave a Big, Nene’s a very good Big so if he’s worth $12 why isn’t he worth $14, $15, and pretty soon he’s a Max player.

by TakeFive on Dec 5, 2011 8:27 AM MST reply actions

Yes, as written earlier, it is Nene or bust for the Nuggets,

Without Nene the Nuggets will only have a mediocre season, with Nene there is a outside chance for a championship.

Here is plan B. If the Nuggets can’t sign Nene their is one more small chance. Go with a two year (second partially guaranteed) deal for Greg Oden for 13mil first year. If he improves to full health he singlehandedly gets the Nuggets into the postseason and beyond and future looks good. If he doesn’t get healthy the Nugs will hit the lottery. Either way I am happy.

by NugzD on Dec 5, 2011 8:33 AM MST reply actions

umm...

I’m a nuggets fan, I really am. But with Nene an outside chance at a championship? Really? I just don’t see that at all.
He’d give us a frontcourt to compete with, but not consistently beat teams. I love Ty and AAA but don’t see them going deep in the playoffs.
Big question: where do points come from?

With a healthy Afflalo/we can actually hit our free throws. But agree Championship team is a little over optimistic

You need a big who can score in this league.

And sometimes you just have to overpay for what you need.

I'm scared,

the next couple days are going to determine the future of the Nuggets franchise for years to come. So far I have been very impressed with Ujiri and hope he can keep it up.

It only takes one bad decision to ruin a team for the next seven years, see Martin, Kenyon.

I have gone from blase about basketball in general during the lockout to intense trepidation about the future of my favorite franchise. No middle ground. If Ujiri navigates this time well I’m gonna put him in my will, really, he gets my throwback jerseys and the condo.

by NugzD on Dec 5, 2011 8:52 AM MST reply actions

I do feel differently about Ujiri

I think he said he won’t do something just for the sake of doing it a la Kiki.
His action will speak louder than his words, but the fact that he thinks about long term outcomes makes me comfortable he is the GM.

If someone pays Nene Max money

and it sounds like someone will, probably the nets, they are making a huge mistake. Can’t pay 30% of your cap to a 14-7 guy. Recipe for 40 wins seasons right there. Too good to get a top pick, not good enough to compete in the playoffs.

Tyson Chandler is smoking something

Thinking he is worth max money for many years.
That guy was almost washed up when he was in Charlotte and that injury history hasn’t magically left him. Plus he has no offensive moves outside of putbacks and alley-oops.
What an overrated loser. I hope the Pacers overpayfor him just to show Larry Bird’s incompetencey as a GM.

Even if.....

We overpay for Nene, I don’t think it will be too crippling. He will be much more tradable than K-Mart ever was.

Not sure what the Nuggets will do. Heck not sure what any team in the NBA will do. Get ready for some crazy rumors. Friday is going to worse than after the NFL lockout.

Nuts that free agency and camps open the same day. Probably the best thing we have is GK coaching since he has seen everything and is used to winning in crazy circumstances..

Cause it be crazy…. OKC gets a HUGE advantage out of the gate since there team is set from the start.

This is good news

BUT, I find it interesting that Karl’s pitch to Nene is now…“hey, after years of jerking you around, you now get to play PF instead of C…and if you go anywhere else, you will have to play C.”

by TakeFive on Dec 5, 2011 9:26 AM MST reply actions

Even the Pistons...

Despite the fact that their center was only 6’9, they had Sheed (6’10), Okur (6’11), and Prince (6’9) in the frontcourt, and they led the NBA in blocks.

by mr. eggplant on Dec 5, 2011 9:49 AM MST reply actions

A good point:

In basketball, it is length, not height that is ultimate more important.

Granted, a lot of taller players have a corresponding wingspan, but Prince up there has fantastically long arms and leaping ability, allowing him to play much bigger. Something the Nuggets will see with the 6’8" but really 6’6" Faried, who has great rebounding instincts and long arms.

Why to basketball players always lie about their height? Or guys in general? Charles Barkley is 6’4" or so, but was always listed at 6’6". Michael Jordan, too wasn’t quite 6’6".

Sorry. Getting distracted. I just think the importance of being 7’ + in the NBA is overstated. And it seems like more teams would rather play a mobile, athletic 6’9" guy in the 5 rather than let some clunky, awkward 7-footer man the post.

Nene’s limitations at center had nothing to do with being a little undersized and everything to do with attitude. He just does not like playing physical and banging with other big guys.

And you guys can talk all the smack you like about K-Mart, but the man was an awesome on-the-ball defender and could hold his own against many bigger opponents. Overpaid? Sure. But I’m going to miss his attitude a ton.

The best thing about Moz

Is his shooting touch. Koufos, too.

And Moz is actually pretty athletic for a legit 7-footer. Of course, this makes me worried about his knees and ankles. But if he stays healthy and continues to progress, there’s no reason not to make him the starting center. I’m glad coach Karl is thinking this way.

It is all about wing-span. Look at Durant. His wingspan is ridiculous. His shots will never get blocked.

Nuggets Can Go to 14 Million

I believe 14 million is the absolute cap for Nene. Denver offers him the most options (other than title contention) including money, position (PF), a coach he likes, a community he is comfortable in, and a young talente team he can lead. If he rejects this, he never wanted to sign here and food riddance.

by ACEIII on Dec 5, 2011 10:48 AM MST via mobile reply actions

He's gone

Someone is going to offer him the max. He’s already moved on mentally. Once that happened, nothing Denver could offer would get him to stay. Denver might get a couple of scrubs thrown in with a sign and trade, nothing more.

Restricted SG for the Wizards. Averaged 19.8 points a game for the Wizards after the Arenas trade. Obvious bad team stat inflation, but a very interesting young guy if someone steals AAA. Wizards have plenty of cap room, so they would have to get creative to get him.

I think he’s worth around 8 personally. The only teams that can make a legit offer to him, are bad ones. The bulls will try but unless they amnesty someone I think the most they could offer would be 8.5. The nuggets would match that.

I like Young

…as a replacement for JR. The scorer off the bench. I think Wash made an offer of $3.7 million, which seems low. I think the Bulls are also after him, which makes for an interesting competition.

I ran into him and his family in the airport right after he was drafted…literally, like the day after. He may have been flying back to the west coast after draft night. It was really interesting to see him in a “normal” airport setting…sitting around waiting for the plane with the rest of the regular folks. He was definately jazzed though, passing out some hi-fives to people that were congratulating him on the draft.

Having a 6'9 center such as Nene

works when you are a fast court team. Nene is faster than most big men and when we ran a lot, Nene was at his most effective. However when you get into the playoffs, the better teams will force you into playing a half-court offense and that is where the lack of size shows. Teams hardly ever win it all with an undersized center, Ben Wallace with Detroit was an exception because he was an athletic freak and superior to Nene in rebounding and defense.

by CloudBurst on Dec 5, 2011 12:17 PM MST reply actions

I wonder why some people think Danilo Gallinari should play power forward?

Because he would be similar to Dirk?

Dirk= 7’0, 245 lbs

Danilo= 6’10, 225 lbs

big difference there.

by CloudBurst on Dec 5, 2011 12:43 PM MST reply actions

Gallo is a tweener

He’s a little too tall for small forwards to handle and a little too quick (dont laugh) for power forwards to follow all over the court.

But he’ll help us most at small forward because he’s a decent rebounder, defensive player for a small but not aggressive enough at power forward.

Gallo would also be best if there are big, strong guys around him and Gallo’s role becomes outside shooter and facilitator where his good shooting, good ballhandling skills and passing can be optimized.

If Gallo plays a lot of power forward, he’s either buffed up or we are in deep trouble in the power positions. Pray that doesnt happen.

unfortunately…. Would like to see AAA back, Young added and then possibly look at Landry as a replacement for Nene. Or just stick with Moz, Kouf, Bird, Faried…. Faried may come out the gates ready to play in the NBA and if that is the case save the money on a guy like Landry and save it for later. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Look, nene and Ty Chandler arent really max talents but they are very important – much more important than they are “great”

Nugs should match almost anything Nene is offered as long as it doesnt cripple our ability to keep/get our resources. That’s where the front office comes in and they have their work cut out for them.

If we’re going to sign guys that aren’t Nene, they need to be young guys with potential/upside. Who cares how many games we win, it’s about developing guys like Moz, Hamilton, Faried, Ty, AAA, etc. And guys like Thad and T-Will (as mentioned above, no actual rumors) and Nick Young, fit that perfectly. even if they think they have a good chance to resign Nene (which I don’t think they do), they have to do their ground work with other options. If they only have a plan A, with no B and C options, they would be incompetent.

Not to mention even if we re-sign Nene

I'm really starting to think

that the best option is to give AAA a front loaded deal, then not sign anyone else. Sit way under the cap, then use that cap space to facilitate the Howard and Paul trades that are coming. If they don’t end up at the minimum, all our players get bonuses at the end of the year.

But Thadd Young could be our starting SF, depending on whether he’s the real deal or not.

Would like to see Faried get a lot of time as well, but at that point it doesn’t really matter who our “starting lineup” is.

This!

He is tall, but he lacks the defense and presence to be a good 4.

But he’s got great size and feet to be an excellent 3. Gallo is not PF material, aside from sliding over there when coach Karl inevitably decides to go small.

I don't know if I agree

Obviously it’s hard to judge because neither player has really gotten big time minutes, but I just am not a big fan of Gallo. Neither am I (or was I) a fan of Chandler either, so that’s why I wanted us to draft Hamilton so badly (I’m sure some of you remember that draft night). xD

Hamilton

He definitely has the physical tools to become better than Gallo and Chandler…If Karl can coach the kid up he could become quite the player for us

by JBnuggs on Dec 5, 2011 5:24 PM MST up reply actions

ehh

i watched almost every game of Hamilton’s at Texas. He really struggled his freshman year. Mostly mental things like shot selection, attitude etc. But he made dramatic improvement his sophomore year and is able to do a lot of things well, like shoot, drive and rebound. Defense and effort is not a strength however. We’ll see if he continues to improve or if he struggles making this transition like he did coming into college.

The guy can certainly put it up, but he’s does not have the potential of Gallo. Gallo is 6’10" and can really shoot. He’s surprisingly agile and athletic, much more so than Hamilton. He’s plays out of control at times, but his ceiling is still higher than Hamilton’s. I’m not the biggest Gallo fan because he seems to really struggle with consistency and I’m not sure he’ll ever be the team leader. But he could potentially. I don’t think Hamilton will ever be that player, but we’ll see. I hope he gets some minutes this year, he’s like a less athletic JR so it should be entertaining.

by skithebert on Dec 5, 2011 5:45 PM MST up reply actions

Well all I've seen is highlights

so my opinion might be a little skewed, but I agree about the concern with Gallo’s consistency. Seems he rarely has more than 2 good games in a row

He will have the full reigns

And hopefully has fully recovered from that broken toe. I really think that made him look bad after that Portland game. So it will be a good opportunity this year to see what he is really made of.

In a lot of ways, the Hornets and Orlando Magic are in a race to make a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers for Paul and Howard. They’re running so many scenarios across the big boards in their offices, but make no mistake: Los Angeles is the port that can entice Paul and Howard to sign extensions, with the one player – young center Andrew Bynum – as a centerpiece that can justify the trade.

There are a lot of ways to present that message without making them feel disrespected. According to quotes from Nene, what made him feel disrespected was not the offer. but that it happened after the season was over, and just before the old CBA expired. Maybe this is not Masai’s fault, and was Stan’s influence that delayed any conversations. It just seems odd.

sources said those teams could be willing to agree to steep buyouts to let the players return to the NBA. The players would have to return all the salary they’ve made, plus agent fees and an additional $1 million to satisfy owners – but that still won’t assure them they could play in the NBA.
Smith was the league’s most recent Player of the Week after a 52-point, 22-rebound performance. Chandler is second in the league in scoring with 32 points per game, trailing American Lester Hudson(notes) (33.7), according to EuroBasket.com.

Personally, I’d only do it if we get Utah’s 2012 in return (which is actually Golden State’s which is Top 7 protected this year, or so I understand), and we’re not giving up much in return. Not sure what Utah’s looking for in return, however, and skeptical that they would make any deal like this with a division rival like us.

he’s basically Nene with better rebounding and WAY less D

You dont think the head butt is mean

That is what I will really miss about Nene. I kinda want to see him head butt Perkins in his ugly mug. Alas we probably wont see him do it in a Nugs uni

How about Kaman...$12.2 million/one year

He isn’t a free agent, but the Clippers will not wantto pay him and Jordan (I agree with Simmons).

Take a flyer, fill the cap, then have more relief next summer.

Kaman is good when healthy.

Not bad

He could probably play with Moz too, considering he has a bit of an outside game

Bout time IMO

They seem to have the most consistently easy schedule year in and year out….Didn’t they have the least amount of b2b’s last season?

by JBnuggs on Dec 5, 2011 5:40 PM MST up reply actions

i admit i don't know how hard it is to play a game

But how is this “bout time”? It’s still easy! I can’t be certain but I’d say a east-to-west b2b has to be harder than a b2b2b with all 3 games essentially at home.

by JBnuggs on Dec 5, 2011 6:00 PM MST up reply actions

I bet that is the Lakers only one because we know Stern wants the Lakers to undefinable advantage

That plus 2 other things
1. DH12 will be a Laker by March.
2. The Lakers will play the least amount of games at the end of the season (compared to other WC potential playoff teams) (OKC will probably have to play a b2b2b end the season)
Oh side note because of past scheduling I bet the nuggets are one of unfortunate teams to have to play 3 b2b2b.

Just thought of something else

Under a normal schedule we hated the 4 games in 5 night thing
I wonder if Stern will put the screws in teams that the Lakers would have problems with in the playoffs (thunder or mavs) by making them play 6 games in 7 or 8 nights toward the end of the season. I wouldn’t put it past Stern to try help the Lakers by screwing with the schedule that way.

Its just a dream by Broussard.

However, if Lakers get CP3, which is more realistic, then Howard might push to go to Nets, then Houston gets Chandler and Nene is forced to reconsider Nuggets!

by jerry25 on Dec 6, 2011 6:32 AM MST up reply actions

Deandre Jordan anyone?

According to Woj Clippers are going to offer a 5 year 40 million dollar deal. Most likely he will not accept and force the Clippers to match an offer so he can get more money. What would it take to pry him away from Clipperland? Should the Nuggets offer him a contract? I definitely would consider it if Nene leaves. He is young, athletic has a great presence on the court, is 7-foot and actually plays good D, as well as being able to run in an up tempo offense. Sounds like a perfect fit to me. Just needs to develop his offense an post work.

Last time I checked, that is $8 million a year

…which isn’t over the top for Jordan…and is way cheaper than Nene or Chandler. Perhaps the Nuggets should push the Clippers a bit on this deal. He really needs to develop a post game though….and his FT shooting is terrible, something like 40%.

by Pusherman on Dec 6, 2011 10:43 AM MST up reply actions

And just like other bad free throw shooters (Nene in the post-season) they will shy away from the ball in big moments, and you can’t have that out of a guy you spend big dough on.

He was a good prospect coming out of A&M, came out too early. Could have been a lotto pick if he would have stayed in school longer.

Jordan always reminds me of Birdman

Good help defense and athletic. But overall he’s got nothing but put backs and ugly iso defense.

Why I prefer to pass on a rehash. Only seen 5 or so clips games last year, so take it for what it’s worth. But I’d pass. Also have to overpay to get him away from the Clips.

Reminds me of Perk...a little

Works hard, big dude, good D, no O, poor FT shooting. Maybe I’m talking myself out of it. It’s not going to happen anyway.

by Pusherman on Dec 6, 2011 11:08 AM MST up reply actions

Nets will wait until answer from Orlando on Howard, then re-sign Kris Humphries, Amnesty Outlaw and then sign Nene.

Howard was in 4 hr. meeting with Otis yesterday.
If Paul goes to Lakers, Howard’s options are Clippers of Nets. Deron Williams assured public yesterday that Howard WOULD sign extension with Nets if traded.

Nets still have best rebuilding package for Orlando, because of cap relief to take back Turk, 2 1st round picks and the potential of BLopez becoming the 2nd best True Center in NBA (still age 23).

Remember Nets wouldn’t trade Lopez for Melo. There is a reason. Brook had Mono and arm injury (surgery in off season). Future is bright. Nuggets would have been better off to take Nets deal.

by jerry25 on Dec 6, 2011 5:19 AM MST reply actions

Orlando will have to decide quickly, because Nets cap space will be gone by end of next week:

Nets will settle for either Chandler or Nene, and will use Chandler to get Nene to sign for a little less (will certainly offer 15 million). Nene+Lopez +Hump trio would work. Nets probably couldn’t unload Petro in near future, but he has been the hardest worker in the off season, so maybe he stays too, as 2nd backup Center behind Nene (who would rotate with Hump at PF).

Nets would also try for discount on AK47, with Proky and Brooklyn/Russian connection.
Yesterday Deron Williams said that Marshon Brooks could be the next Jamaal Crawford (I agree) and that everyone point guard would love to have Anthony Morrow. Therefore, Nets are focused on Multiple Bigs and Billy King admitted that in his interview.

The only question I have, is whether there is any possibility for Denver to cooperate in a S&T for Nene, to get him the extra year? People can tweet directly to Billy King (@bkdefend) since he reads the little tweets he receives.

I don't think the Nuggets would have been "better off" with the Nets deal

Yes, more picks…but it’s pretty clear George Karl didn’t particularly care for Favors and he would have been either a wasted on the Nuggets or a bust, depending on your view of him.

I’m not seeing how the Nuggets would S&T with the Nets…they do’t seem to have much to offer right now considering their draft picks currently belong to Utah.

Agree with this

It’s yet to be seen how things pan out.

Favors has potential but I like Gallo’s over his currently. The lottery pick last year in a very meager class. the GS pick this year could have good value but we’d have to see where it lands.

Would take Chandler over Harris for talent wise.

We’ve gaiend space and ability to make moves. We’d have to see where those moves end before juding the trade as a whole. I also hold a slight amount of hope that that NYK pick in 2014 might be better then we think…Just like many others I don’t trust Amare’s knees. They’ll only have picks in every other draft and without a serious talent infusion could be meddling fairly quick.

What happened to the Tim Duncan superstar?

He decided to stay with the Spurs despite a tempting offer from Orlando.
He trusted his FO to get things done and he got 4 rings.
We need that kind of superstar who just knows they are good enough and not paying attention to what is going on around him.
I think that type of player is gone, but I always feel there will be one eventually and hopefully the Nuggets get him.
Btw I think Durant will flee when he gets the chance, he can talk all he wants now, but he hangs around LBJ way too much.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
