Nuggets at Mavericks recap: It all works for Denver in first win

George Karl tinkered with his lineups tonight and everything seemed to work. In the first game of "his team," Nuggets starting point guard Ty Lawson led the way with 27 points and the Nuggets never looked back with a 115-93 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

Star-divide

It's always important to get off to a quick start against a team playing the second night of a back-to-back. The first offensive play of the season for Denver was Timofey Mozgov winning the tipoff, Ty Lawson bringing the ball across halfcourt, passing to Nene at the three point line, a back-cut down the baseline by Danilo Gallinari, a perfect bounce pass from Nene, and a two handed slam by Gallo over Dirk Nowitzki ... 2-0 Nuggets. That play just summed up what we saw with the Nuggets last season and what it looks like we'll get this season as well - unselfish and pretty team basketball. The Nuggets not only started hot, but they continued to pound the Mavs all night. One of the finest first halves in Nuggets recent history.

At the break the Nuggets were 24-47 from the field, 57.4%, had 12 fast-break points, out-rebounded the Mavs 26-15 (Denver had 6 offensive boards to 1 for Dallas), were 7-13 from downtown, 8-8 from the free throw line, 12 assists, 7 steals, 3 blocks, just 4 turnovers, and caused 9 Dallas turnovers. Those stats added up to a 69-42 halftime lead and essentially meant game over for the Mavs.

As expected, Denver started Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Gallo, Nene, and Mozgov. The first guy off the bench for the Nuggets was Andre Miller, who checked into the game with 5:47 left in the first quarter. Al Harrington checked in at the 4:20 mark for Mozgov and we saw Nene play plenty of the five-spot in the first half. Miller, 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, looks like the same Miller we knew and loved during his first tour in Denver. He's gritty, he's nearly automatic around the paint, and he has extremely good court vision. Add to that 'Dre was 2-2 on the night from downtown! His three-point shot was one of the ugliest shots in the league during his first stint in Denver, and it actually looks like he's been working on it over the years ... not too shabby.

Harrington, 18 points and 5 rebounds, looked pretty good coming off the bench. He's trimmed up, moving well, and shot lights out against Dallas ... well, he started very hot hitting four of his first five shots (2-2 from deep) before finishing 7-13 on the night (2-5 from deep). This is the Harrington I thought the Nuggets were getting last season. Perhaps his injuries played more of a role that anyone thought. If this is the Big Al we see this season, look out.

Teams will need to look out for Denver's depth as well. The Mavs looked lost, slow, and like a team that has lost what once made them special. Lamar Odom was a threat with the Lakers because they had such a nice inside game that his ability to stretch the floor was a unique weapon in Los Angeles. On a Mavs team that is again strictly a perimeter team, Odom's talents seem wasted and their change of pace man J.J. Barea is no longer around to carve teams up inside, what will the champs do? The Heat and Nuggets exposed Dallas' age and inability to play at a break neck pace.

Lawson did whatever he wanted tonight. His long-range shot was working, 3-6 from downtown. He could get inside whenever he needed to and his mid-range game looked new and improved. He finished the night 10-15 from the floor to go along with 4 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Chris Marlowe mentioned during the opening quarter that Miller has been pushing Lawson in practice and I dare say that the Nuggets again have one of the best point guard combinations in the league.

The depth of this Nuggets squad is just unreal. Mozgov, Afflalo, and Nene failed to score in the first quarter, yet the team was up 32-23. Gallo looked good when he was going to the rim and he has his lift back. The Italian finished the game just 4-10 from the field (1-5 from deep, 6-6 from the charity stripe) for 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. His unselfish play was very apparent after a Harrington steal where Gallo was all alone for an easy dunk, but passed the ball back to Big Al for the easy slam. It's good to see those rewarding plays and shows this team is enjoying playing together.

It's hard to even try to keep up with all the players on this squad. Also coming off the bench for Denver was Chris Andersen and as I will call him from now on "Dirty-Bird" with his new trucker look, Rudy Fernandez, and Corey Brewer. The trio combined for 17 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 steals. Fernandez played a sneaky 30 minutes. I guess it did feel like he was on the floor a lot and it would appear that Karl enjoys using his new Spanish weapon.

Speaking of foreign players, how about Mozgov's 14 minutes? Seems to me that Moz is the new Dahntay Jones - meaning that Moz may be starting the first and third, but he's not playing much in the second or fourth quarters. Moz hustles and finished 0-1 from the floor (1-2 from the foul line) with 3 rebounds and just 1 foul. I was hoping we'd see more of Mozgov and he wasn't in foul trouble, but I think we all know that Karl likes to play smaller lineups with more speed. As Moz earns the trust of his coach, he'll see his playing time rise.

There just wasn't much that went wrong for Denver tonight. They finished the half on a 22-1 run and never were in trouble of losing the lead. It was a very impressive road win and one that should not be discredited because Dallas was on the second of a back-to-back. In these next 65 games we will see some wild stuff and these games are going to keep coming and coming. Teams will have to learn how to find the energy to play night after night and it looks like the Nuggets are deep enough to do some major damage this season.

Stiff of the Night: Lamar Odom. He played 33 minutes and shot just 1-10 from the field, including 0-5 from downtown. The former 6th Man of the Year has been ejected from one game and stunk up the other. Maybe the Lakers got out at the right time?

Non-Stiff of the Night: Ty Lawson. A great performance from Lawson. His 27 point effort is something we could be seeing a lot this season as Lawson is poised for a breakout year.

Views you can use:

  • Denver was 10-20 from downtown before finished the night 10-27 from three-point land.
  • Nene finished the night 4-8 from the field (8 points) with 7 rebounds. Sort of a rough night for the newly inked power forward slash center, but it was great to see such a towering Nuggets lineup of Gallo, 6'10'', Nene, 6'10'', and Moz, 7'1''.
  • Karl just couldn't help himself by sitting his height in favor of this lineup in the fourth quarter: Lawson, 5'10'', Afflalo, 6'5'', Fernandez, 6'6'', Brewer, 6'9'' (188 pounds), and Dirty Birdman, 6'11''.
  • Kosta Koufos saw just 3 garbage time minutes, while DeMarre Carroll and Kenneth Faried both recorded DNP-Coach's Decisions.

IF we are looking for negatives, I thought Brewer had a bad game

Several forced shots and a few turnovers. Karl likes him, but I am not sure he is the long-term answer at back-up SF. Adding Chandler at 20 minutes a night would be an upgrade, IMO.

by ACEIII on Dec 26, 2011 10:22 PM MST reply actions

Brew only played 13 minutes and it was with a large lead.

I agree though, Wilson much better than Brewer. Tough to find minutes for Chandler though…

Chandler will get more than 20 minutes because

he will spell from 2 – 4. Also his defense would be esepcially valuable.

My Theory on Karl and Faried

Faried really should have played the final 7 minutes of the game. Up 25 with a compressed schedule, Karl needs to clear his bench in games like this. I suspect Karl sees that Manimal is becoming a fan favorite, and any minutes he gives him is only going to fuel the fire of the fans. Karl doesn;t want to let the Manimal out of the bottle, so to speak.

The Kmart Sighting

I have to admit, I felt oddly sentimental seeing Kmart watch his old team from the stands. I know it is time for the Nuggs to move on from the Kmart/JR era, but it seemed like Kmart and the players kind of felt awkward with his appearance at the game. It was nice to see Nene and Big Al give him a big hug during a timeout near the end the game. He looks like he is in top shape. Kmart was a warrior, and you have to only wish him well in his next stop. I hope he lands with Miami and gets a championship. I suspect Melo talks him into joining the Knicks. Cuban may be thinking about adding him after tonight’s debacle for the Mavs.

miller came into a tight game in the first quarter

while he was on the court the team seemed to gel, ball was getting distributed very well. its obviously a small sample, but it seems he is going to get harrington and others some incredible open looks.

when lawson checked back in to pair with miller it lights out for a few minutes. looks like lawson very comfortable playing the 2 to miller’s 1 on offense, and then letting miller guard the bigger opposing guard.

Hey takefive

I thought you said we would be lucky to win a game in December? Is winning by 22 against the defending champs luck?
I already mentioned they were on a b2b and you still said we would lose. Can you say we will lose the rest of our games please?

Yeah the regular season will be ugly for a lot of teams

Its like preseason on crack. So you are going to see tired legs and rusty players. I think we will have a good December because of our depth, but we won’t know what we really look like until late January.

Don't make bets, don't predict individual games.

But I do think it will be tough to win on the Left Coast.

I think we will win both games

Portland tough one, but Felton will get burned by Lawson and LA will be easier. If we lose at LA we will beat them at home anyway.

My reference was more general to all Left Coast teams

For December, we could split. That would be a definite plus.
GS is looking much better, Sac still young but will compete.

Portland will be waiting for Denver's B2B

Lakers will have Bynam back and hungry for wins after starting 0-2
That will be a tough mini trip. Real tough.
Nuggets could easily have to settle for winning half their Dec. games.

by TakeFive on Dec 27, 2011 12:06 AM MST up reply actions

Portland slightly overated IMO

Camby is a liability and they really don’t have a bench. LMA is their only player and they struggled mightily against a young Philly team. Our depth will help us on b2bs. Plus LMA will not put up good stats with Felton vs. Milelr.
On the West coast I am only worried about the Clippers if there is any team to worry about.
Ty is the answer to the Lakers as Fisher will get smoked like a Christmas ham.
I wont call the Warriors a defensive team until they actually play defense.
But keep doubting the Nuggets takefive, just keep doing it please

No disrespect........ But

You obviously didn’t see the GS/Bulls game. It was interesting to watch Thibodeau go to small ball in attempting to come back. Great game though.

Guess we’ll see. I still say the Nuggets will have a tough time on the Left Coast.

by TakeFive on Dec 27, 2011 12:42 AM MST up reply actions

Watched the game

GSW almost coughed it up. They got lucky with 3s and Monte really just charges in with no regard for what he is doing. Works against a tired/emotionally depleted Bulls team, but not against a disciplined rested team.
Also Curry sprained his ankle again and may have a lot of injury problems in this shortened season.
Will take time for Jackson to implement his system. In the meantime, will be a fun team to watch, but nothing to worry about if you are a serious team in February (after teams have warmed up)

I'll admit

I skipped this Nuggets game tonight in favor of watching my Saints play on MNF, but I did jump on a couple times and read some tweets online and whatnot, and here are the impressions I got:

- Guys like Carroll and Faried were sat in favor of the established players like Brewer, Fernandez, Bird, etc. when we had a 20+ point lead. Unacceptable.
- From what I gathered, the 2-PG line-up was used quite often, but any negatives it might have had were hidden by the Mavs awful offensive game, Ty’s amazing game, and Dre playing well as well as knocking down 3s (which almost never happens).
- Hoping this game by Ty was a sign of him taking that “next step”, but will hold off for now.
- Live by the 3, die by the 3. 27 3s attempted is a LOT, but we do have a lot of established 3-point shooters and it’s clear that the 3-ball will be a huge part of our arsenal this season.
- Bird guarding Dirk? Heard that didn’t go very well.

All in all I can’t wait to catch the next Nuggets game, but this is a good sign. This was a game we were supposed to win against a team on the 2nd night of a back-to-back, but we’ve all seen the Nuggets having problems against the teams we’re supposed to beat. Hopefully this is a sign of what’s yet to come.

Looking forward to watching this season. I’m not a big basketball fan, but I do love to see the Nuggets doing well. I cut my teeth when my dad used to drive me and my brothers down to Big Mac to watch Dikembe and the boys play.

Now, I live alone and I’m a single teacher in a small town, so I have nothing better to do at night than to watch TV. A good friend of mine is a new basketball coach at my school, so I’m sure I’ll be getting plenty of Nuggets watching in.

So basically, go Nuggets!

Perfect Start!

Could not have asked for a better game and start to the season. I could go on and on but I want to point out the things thy I really took out of game 1.

Andre has such an old-school type game and I LOVE IT! The way he goes about everything is so thought out and precise, just amazing. Ty will win most improved player of the year award if he does why he did tonight on a consistent basis, he really attacked and looked for his offense. Gallo showed just how good he could be early on when he blew by a number of defenders on different occasions for dunks. Afflalo looked good towards the end of the game and I’m positive he will make a major impact on this team and be one of the leaders. Al “Buckets” Harrington looks fit and rejuvenated and has seemed to emerge as a real leader on this team. He just looks like a completely different player this season, and could come to be our x-factor during the season. The only down part was that there was no sighting of the Manimal, I really thought he coil have got 7 or 8 minutes in at the end.

Ty was incredible, and Harrington’s instant offense off the bench was surprising. Hopefully Al can stay consistent and do exactly what he did tonight for the duration of the season.

Having Dre is great for Ty, and the production from Dre isn’t too shabby, either.

Really looking forward to watching the home opener on Wednesday.

What is not to like?

We could nitpick about the who played, shots and the like but…

1. The effort and pace where great. Stay healthy Ty and you could be breaking out to the NBA nation as a star.

2. The Nuggets played hard defense. Not always good.. but the effort was there. That is key. Made Dallas look tired and slow.

3. Nene and AAA had quiet nights and still won big. Good, good sign.

4. Killer instinct. The Nuggets never let up. Another good sign.

5. Any ROAD win is a good win for the Nuggets.

I know people want to see the Rooks get some burn, but if the vets keep playing well. Time is hard to earn. Competition is not a bad thing.

Bring on the Jazz.

I do think it would be nice to have Chandler this season off the bench at 3. There are going to be injuries. Worst case scenario – - if Gallo went down, would we really want Cory Brewer starting? Chandler could fill in and the Nuggs would keep rolling…

by ACEIII on Dec 27, 2011 3:19 AM MST up reply actions

Nuggs are a tad light in depth at the 2-3

Can’t afford injuries to Gallo or Rudy. Adding Chandler for this season would be nice insurance at the 2-3. Looking at this team, we have a real chance to make a playoff run – - let’s maximize that opportunity.

Good things to look at

1. Gallo looked like he had an extra step this year, he had a few nice finishes at the rim and showed his leaping ability on a few fast breaks, and I will tell you right now that even though he might now have Melo’s layup prowling ability yet, he still showcased that he can dunk better than Melo. He passed a good amount of times and knew when to pass, despite being 1-5 from 3 point land, he will normally make 35-40% of those shots, so when those are falling he will be a 20 point scorer.

2. Ty Lawson looked like a sharper player this year, it is as if he is ready to play at an all-star level. The knock on the guy has never been his ability, his shooting, passing, or his ability to play the game but that is a few inches shorter than todays pro-to-typical all-star guard. He showcased his scoring ability, and the one thing I feel will make up for his size (he isn’t Earl Boykins small people, he is only an inch shorter than Chris Paul.) on the defensive side is his stealing which he had three tonight. He looked like he knew the chemistry of the team better than anyone on the court, he knew when to give it to each player at the right time, including giving it to Miller so he could facilitate the game. Overall Lawson had the best basketball I.Q out there.

3. Overall I like to say that even though I don’t think we will have a top 10 defense this year, if we can manage to create turnovers and make the other team pay on the fast break or just get more possessions overall than the other team due to turnovers, we will win 9-10 times. You can always when with a great offense and mediocre defense if you create turnovers to make up for your lack of defense. One example of this being the steals in this game. Rudy had 3, Lawson had 3, Miller had 3, and Afflalo had 2. The rest of the team had 4 steals and overall the blocking was nice as well, particularly Nene who isn’t known for being a shot blocker. If we create turnovers and exploit the other team with our super-charged offense we will do very well this season. The Suns in the mid 2000’s were not great at creating turnovers, thus the games were a high scoring affair on both ends.

The things that need improved?

The 5 position
- Rebounding was not a concern for us this game as we finished with 10 more rebounds than the Mavs, but the one thing that concerns me is the center position. Mozgov looked like just a giant body out there as he finished with 3 rebounds. He did have a few good box-outs I noticed and the balls didn’t come to him so I feel that as long as Mozgov is boxing his man out, I don’t care how many rebounds he gets because we prevent offensive rebounds with a team that actually boxes out, we had 10 offensive rebounds to double what Dallas had at 5 offensive rebounds. I still think that Dallas is a poor rebounding team without Chandler so we will need to improve against Utah who has a pretty decent front-court, hopefully Mozgov has a better showing in that game.

The only two players with – stats and not + stats – This being Brewer and Chris Anderson.. both finishing with -8 and -7 on the -/+ line. Brewer can have streaks of good offense but it isn’t needed on this team. He played well defensively but he looked incompetent, almost lost on offense. I know it is a small negative and I think he will be key for us this year.. I mainly want to see how well he does against Durant because I think we got him for just that purpose. Anderson just looked a little out of shape out there.. he didn’t play that well except his rebounding game, which was pretty decent. Overall I hope he gets into better shape as the year goes along.

stop the whining about who didn't play

First real game people, and they aren’t playing tonight. The main rotation and bench needs as much time as they can as they are still getting used to one another, not the time to develop rookies. If they were playing on a back to back (to back also) and were in this kind of blowout then it would be different. The important part is they didn’t play their best yet were in no danger of losing the game, could be more the Mavs problem but it shows how deep and versatile the Nuggets are as well. A fast start could set the table for the rest of the season, let the rooks watch and learn for a week if need be.

I’m not sure how many games are in the season 60-something.

Can we just amnesty Bird, when is his contract up? I’m tired of reading the same commentary. He’s not going to improve on those areas and if the Hamburgler keeps playing pretty well he’s at least pretty good and his contract isn’t horrendous. Maybe straight up for D12?

3 guard lineup?

I’m sure it was referenced above but who was GK running out there? I didn’t watch the game as the FIL had the remote. Lawson, Miller and?

We’ve got size and big guys who are athletic but we’ll see if he uses them that way. I think we should just use everyone and try to run everyone out of the gym every night, especially at home with the altitude.

I don’t think I can start up my fire GK talk just yet but as always it’s both day to day (aren’t we all) and on the back burner.

by ruralnugs on Dec 27, 2011 9:35 AM MST up reply actions

AAA was the other guard

Gallo and Nene were the other bigs.

I think that was the line-up.

You know, I tend to complain about the small line-ups. But sometimes they do the trick. Sometimes.

When the Nuggs start getting beat inside and losing the rebounding battle, it’s time to go big. But if the shots are falling and the speed of small is working, I’m going to be OK with it.

I swear, Rudy had lighter, more auburn hair when he was with Portland. Now his hair is all dark and he looks like a shorter Danilo.

I liked the rebounding, too. Moz didn’t pull down a lot, but he “assisted” on several rebounds by other Nugs with his blocking out. Liked seeing that.

He’s still the big question mark. Hope he can become a solid 20 minutes per night guy.

Most satisfying

to WAIL on the defending champs on our opening day!

All credit to our Nuggs for their hustle, ball movement and the ease with which they are integrating several new rotation players. We have all been predicting that Ty and Gallo would step up (except Andrew, who has his doubts about Ty), and if this game in any indication, we are heading in the right direction.

That said, Dallas just looked AWFUL ! They will have to change their style in order to exploit Odom and Carter, and those two don’t compensate for Chandler, Barea and Butler anyway. Also, I never quite realized how dreadful Haywood is – honestly, I would almost rather have Koufos.

I know superstar bias is a given, but the media is in mid-season form already

Nuggets and Heat beat the Mavs in similar fashion, but this is said about the Heat:

So what can we make out of one measly game?. . .[T]his felt like a grand opening of sorts. As children around the world were anxiously unwrapping presents on Christmas, the Heat were unveiling their own little gift for the rest of the NBA: a freight train piloted by LeBron and Dwyane Wade. They flashed their athletic brilliance last season, but not for the majority of the 48 minutes. For long stretches in Sunday’s game, the Heat looked unstoppable

And this is said about the Nuggets win:

Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets opened their season with a performance that sent a clear message to the rest of the NBA. Not about them. About the Dallas Mavericks. The reigning champions have quickly become a team everyone wants to play. There’s no telling which is worse right now, their offense or defense, their conditioning or chemistry

Why did the Heat win?

Of course, losing Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and DeShawn Stevenson will do that, but Spoelstra’s new groove had as much effect on the final score as Chandler’s absence did. There’s no doubt that the Mavericks deeply miss Chandler, but it’s not like he alone could pull the emergency break on the Heat’s fast-paced attack.

Why did the Nuggets win?

Dallas has been behind by at least 23 points in every game since being crowned champs. There are plenty of reasons to choose from: an overhaul of their rotation, the shortened training camp and other teams being motivated to take them down.

Heat scored points against the Mavs:

Miami went on a 12-0 run late in the first quarter, a 15-1 spurt in the second quarter, then the 14-0 binge in the third period.

Nuggets didn’t score points, Mavs gave points up:

Dallas gave up 20 straight points in the second quarter and had a stretch of 14 straight missed shots during a 9:52 drought between baskets. It was so bad that their player of the game, Sean Williams, threw up when he left the court.

Heat unselfish play is part of their brilliance:

James and Wade led a series of scoring waves that put Miami ahead by 35 points midway through the third quarter, the lead peaking when James soared to the rim and tipped an alley-oop pass to Wade so he could have the dunk instead.

Nuggets unselfish play shows how bad the Mavs are:

The Nuggets had enjoyed so many easy baskets at that point that they didn’t even bother doing anything fancy, with Gallinari softly tossing the ball to Harrington for a routine dunk that made it 65-41.

Ha ha

I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Too much is made over media bias. But there is an inherent east coast bias simply because so many sports analysts live in the eastern time zone and miss so many games after they go to bed.

I do think Denver is every bit as good as Miami, though. Which is to say Dallas isn’t that bad.

I agree with the above comments tho – Nuggs flying under the radar is great for us. Let the press praise all of the other teams. It gives our guys mucho motivation, other teams can continue to underestimate us and we’ll quietly continue to win game after game.

by Avarra on Dec 27, 2011 10:58 AM MST up reply actions

More fun than most Monday nights

Good start. Sean Williams puking about summed up the Mavs’ effort. They’re more hung over than CloudBurst. Early season observations:

Ty Lawson: If a guy that short can be dominant, he was. Speed kills. Good 3 point shooting.
Trip(A): Rusty.
Danilo: Not in game shape but this kid proving all comments about possible break-out player. Not fair to compare to Melo, who is a 2 playing 3. Unique.
Nene: Should be embarrassed to take that money but he played better in 2nd half. Defacto starting center.
Moz: Can’t see Slew Foot playing much. A lot of human mass form and he did clog the middle a bit. Like to see him play and learn some kind of positioning and better footwork. Needs to learn to use his size. John Wooden recruited on the basis of foot speed and quickness. You can see George favoring those types of players.
Bench:
Dre: He’s better than ever. Just schooled the Mavs. George’s favorite player. 2 point guard offense will get figured out by other teams later in the year when they iso and post our guards.
Big Al: He played well and is not injured. I’m still not a fan. Plays like a shooting guard. Who jumps higher, Scott Hastings or Big Al?
Bird: God he is awful. Ditto all the posts on this site about his terrible footwork, positioning and tendency to go for every head fake in the world. I think Dan Issel could go for 30 on him, at his current age.
Corey Brewer: He was out of it on offense but he will help this team. See speed comment.
Rudy: Can see his talent but plays too far from the basket to be effective. Another Euro whiner and flopper. Shut up and play.
Kosta: I like this guy. Better feet and quicker than Moz.
Kenneth Faried: Perhaps he would have been better served by working on his defense and offense than hiring handlers and coming up with self-promotional nicknames. We don’t see what George sees in practice and I have to trust his judgment, no matter how much we all admire the kid’s hustle and want to.

Conclusion: If you are a betting man you might consider Denver against the spread during first half of season until the East coast odds makers catch up. Like I said, their depth and “every man contributes” is key to this weird truncated season.

I'm not worried

I think the de facto third PG would be Rudy in a pinch, but the excellent passing rookie out of UTEP could be activated if there is an injury and potentially see some burn.

Not worried because while Ty pushes with his speed and brings the offense up with him, Miller pushes with lead passes and lobs. He can chill in the back court after tossing a perfect pass for Rudy to dunk.

Oh man!

I have got a good feeling about this season (of coarse i say that for every season season). But here is why I am delighted to begin this season:

1. We are presenting the largest front court I can remember.
2. We are playing unselfishly!
3. We have the deepest team in the league. The reason that will be important is to properly gauge our output on back to back to back games. And also to constantly barage our opponents.
4. We have flexibility if for some reason we NEED to make a move.
5. Nene back at PF will prove to be the best move of the season.
6. Moz is a really good fit, (he does not need to score, he just needs to be a presence)
7. We have deceptive speed! Not only with Lawson, but with Gallo and Fernandez.
8. Andre Miller

I can keep going on and on but for now…Three cheers for the best opening day game for our Nuggets. Hip Hip….

Those guys are rusty. Give them a couple games and their games will pick up.

I think the biggest challenge this year will be keeping everyone happy. I’m not really that concerned about who will be the “go to” guy. A team is more dangerous if the defense doesn’t know who to key on. I think AAA, Gallo or Lawson all have the right make up for being the big shot guy.

Regarding Dallas

I’m surprised how highly people have been rating them coming into the season. I just don’t see that team of aging superstars being the threat that last year’s team was.

I agree comPletely

Dallas will struggle badly this season. 2 of the 3 Texas team will get injuries due to scheduling

Harrington, Mozgov, bird

I’m not surprised about Al H’s performance. He had previous season averging 20 ppg and 18 ppg. I’ve had plantar Fasc. and i know you can’t move and it takes Forever to heal.

Why the stiffs? Mosgov and KK will keep Nene out of foul trouble: Nene plays much more aggressively late with low a foul count. Also, Dano won’t have to battle PF’s in the paint and wear out.

Why does GK like Bird: Because he HUSTLES! You see him sky on the headfake because he’s usually in position to! And then the other bigs have time to get over.

Why the small team.? You know, GK loves it. Playing with such size is new to him.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
