The Denver Stiffs 2011-12 NBA Preview: Western Conference...

Unlike their counterparts in the Eastern Conference, the NBA's Western Conference boasts at least five teams that could contend for the NBA Championship making this perennially stronger conference as interesting as ever. And, of course, these are the teams that our Nuggets get to play against the most.

Star-divide

DENVER STIFFS WESTERN CONFERENCE PREVIEW

1. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

Outlook: In a post-lockout NBA, the Thunder should be the biggest beneficiaries. Not only did they make it to the Western Conference Finals last season, but they are returning their entire roster which was young, deep and dynamic in the first place. Oh, and Kevin Durant may just be the best player in the NBA on top of all that.

So while most NBA teams suffer from a condensed training camp and crammed-in 66-game schedule with multiple back-to-backs, the Thunder are best suited to survive all this and will finish first in the Western Conference as a result.

Oklahoma City Stiff: No one in Denver likes these guys, but the most unlikable Thunder player has to be Kendrick Perkins who all but tried to kill a Nuggets fan after Game 4 of their contentious playoff series against Denver last season.

2. DALLAS MAVERICKS

Outlook: Losing Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea will hurt, but the Mavericks reloaded by bringing in Lamar Odom, Vince Carter and Delonte West. IF center Brendan Haywood can stay healthy, the Mavericks have a great shot at repeating as NBA Champions even though the lockout-shortened season could have some ill-affects on this aging team. Don't be surprised if the Mavericks have a soft regular season performance followed up by a great post-season showing.

Dallas Stiff: Brian Cardinal is a true "Stiff" in a way that would make Doug Moe proud. Big, white, doughy and bald, Cardinal provided much hustle and toughness for the Mavericks last season and will probably do it again this year.

3. MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

Outlook: I don't know if the Grizzlies have the discipline to turn in a great regular season. But as a relatively young team with plenty of talent and a superb playoff outing now on their resume, I see the Grizzlies building off of their 2010-11 performance and giving aging teams fits throughout 2011-12. And lest we forget, the Grizzlies went on their magical ride without Rudy Gay last season. With Gay back, the Grizzlies could become title contenders.

Memphis Stiff: This spot used to be permanently reserved for Zach Randolph, but Z-Bo has turned his game around and become one of the toughest SOBs to deal with on the low post. So the "Stiff" Award here has to go to Hamed Haddadi, a big, bumbling Iranian that can't seem to get one minute of playing time on the court.

4. LOS ANGELES LAKERS

Outlook: Everyone is writing off the Lakers thanks to the Odom trade, the Mike Brown hiring, Kobe Bryant's age and the non-acquisition of Chris Paul. And while, granted, the Lakers imploded at Dallas last season in the playoffs' second round and Andrew Bynum will be suspended for the first five games of the 2011-12 season, this team still won 57 games last year and the prolonged lockout - combined with the early playoff exit - probably helped Bryant get healthy, which makes the Lakers dangerous. The Dwight Howard trade talk will prove to be an ongoing distraction, but the under-the-radar signings of Josh McRoberts, Jason Kapono and Troy Murphy will keep the Lakers very competitive (and very white, too!).

Los Angeles Stiff: Jim Buss - son of Lakers owner Jerry - is supposedly running the show and has already made a number of missteps, like not consulting Bryant on the Brown hiring, approving an Odom giveaway for nothing and coming across as an idiot when holding the Larry O'Brien Trophy after the 2010 NBA Finals. Could the younger Buss become the West Coast version of James Dolan?

5. SAN ANTONIO SPURS

Outlook: In 2010-11, the 61-win Spurs looked all set to win another one of their "odd year" NBA Championships (they won in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007) until the Grizzlies tanked games to face the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs and took San Antonio out in six games, becoming just the fourth eighth-seed in NBA history to beat a one-seed. Now this aging team gets to slog through a tight schedule while the Thunder, Grizzlies and Mavericks appear as formidable as ever. I don't like the Spurs chances at a successful 2011-12 campaign.

San Antonio Stiff: Father time. Five of the Spurs' key contributors are north of 30 years old.

6. DENVER NUGGETS

Outlook: The Nuggets have a lot of good things going for this roster, notably size, youth and depth. All of which will make the Nuggets a tough opponent on any given night and could land them as high as third in the regular season Western Conference standings as smaller, older and less deep teams fall by the wayside due to the grind of the lockout-shortened schedule. In fact, I don't foresee the Nuggets finishing lower than sixth.

That said, the Nuggets don't have a single All-Star on their roster whereas every team above and just below them here has one, if not two. Thanks to their depth and style of play, the Nuggets can probably win a bunch of regular season games without a single All-Star. But as we saw in the playoffs last year, having a few All-Stars might be necessary come playoff time.

Denver Stiff(s): It's going to be fun watching ex-Nuggets J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin and Wilson Chandler try to squirm their way out of their binding Chinese contracts over the next few months. But here's hoping that Chandler comes back to Denver for a playoff run.

7. LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Outlook: I'm not sold on the Clippers bandwagon yet, nor should anyone be. Yes, the Chris Paul + Blake Griffin duo should be getting NBA fans everywhere excited ... very excited ... but this team has a logjam at point guard, no depth up front, Vinny Del Negro as head coach and, well, they're still the Clippers. A tough team to predict, the Clippers could finish anywhere from eighth to third in the Western Conference this season, depending on how much Paul changes the culture in Staples Center's other NBA locker room.

Los Angeles Stiff: The Clippers' point guard situation. Paul, Mo Williams, Chauncey Billups, Randy Foye and Eric Bledsoe is two - and perhaps three - point guards too many.

8. PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS

Outlook: This jinxed franchise remains just that in the wake of Brandon Roy's sad early retirement and the continued uncertainty surrounding Greg Oden and now LaMarcus Aldridge's health. But with Aldridge back, a roster that includes Gerald Wallace, Jamal Crawford, Marcus Camby, Raymond Felton, Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews is good enough to steer this team back into the playoffs, especially with Nate McMillan as head coach.

Portland Stiff: Health. I've never seen a team succumb to more disastrous injuries time after time.

9. PHOENIX SUNS

Outlook: As we saw last season, the Suns will flirt with the playoffs but fall out of the top-eight when all is said and done. Of all the seasons to have your two best players - Steve Nash and Grant Hill - be 37 and 39 years old, respectively, this isn't it. Surrounding Nash and Hill is an assortment of swing players plus the center trio of Marcin Gortat, Robin Lopez and Channing Frye is intriguing, but they'll need a collapse from one of the teams above to make the playoffs.

Phoenix Stiff: I'm not sure how team president Lon Babby sleeps at night. He inherited a team that made it to the Western Conference Finals two years ago and is now wasting Nash's last good seasons with a roster stuck in no-man's land.

10. UTAH JAZZ

Outlook: I'm not sure what to make of the Jazz's 2011-12 roster other than to say they won't be an easy out thanks to the size they're amassing in Salt Lake City. Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap and Mehmet Okur (if healthy) have serious game and youngsters Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors will be interesting to watch develop. The back court is a little patchy with Devin Harris at point guard playing beside rookie Alec Burks and second year man Gordon Hayward at shooting guard. But the Jazz have just enough overall talent and youthful depth to beat anyone on any given night, especially at home.

Salt Lake City Stiff: It's too early to call Favors a bust or not, but the Nets sure were anxious to trade this third overall pick to Denver for Carmelo Anthony last year and the Jazz must not have been enamored with Favors enough to not draft Kanter this year.

11. GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

Outlook: One of the most fun teams to watch in the NBA, the Warriors aren't going anywhere until they resolve the Stephen Curry / Monta Ellis back court situation. Curry and Ellis are both too undersized and both need the ball too much to play together, but they are talented enough to give opponents fits if they maintain their up-tempo style play. I'm also expecting a better season out of David Lee now that he's acclimated to the Bay Area.

Oakland Stiff: The Warriors didn't really pay Kwame Brown $7 million for one season, did they? Did they?!

12. NEW ORLEANS HORNETS

Outlook: The Hornets surprised a lot of people by making the playoffs last season but such a surprise won't be replicated this season. Despite losing Chris Paul to the Clippers this year, they took back enough in the trade (Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman and Al-Farouq Aminu) to not be the worst team in the Western Conference ... but they'll be close. The loss of David West hurts, too.

New Orleans Stiff: Team "owner" David Stern. While the Hornets ultimately did better with the Paul-to-the-Clippers trade than they would have done with the Paul-to-the-Lakers trade - and while owners do have the right to veto trades - the Lakers trade was fine by any objective measure and Stern crossed a line as owner/commissioner that should never have been crossed.

13. MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

Outlook: After many cold NBA winters in Minneapolis in the wake of Kevin Garnett's departure, things are getting exciting for Timberwolves fans. Kevin Love. Ricky Rubio. Michael Beasley. Derrick Williams. Rick Adelman as coach. The Wolves could finally climb out of the Western Conference cellar this season and should be one of the more fun, young teams to watch in the NBA.

Minneapolis Stiff: After presumably being bounced out of the NBA for good, the attitude-heavy Bonzi Wells is attempting an NBA comeback at age 35. Had he just been a nice guy in the first place, he wouldn't be having to do this right now.

14. HOUSTON ROCKETS

Outlook: Rocket-ed (pardon the pun) by the non-Pau Gasol trade that should have happened two weeks ago, the Rockets have one of the less appealing rosters in the NBA and will struggle to stay relevant in the Western Conference. I still like Luis Scola, Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin but new head coach Kevin McHale is going to be wishing he stayed at TNT come mid-season. Simply put, the Rockets have never recovered from the injuries that took down the Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady Era.

Houston Stiff: Rockets' GM Daryl Morey has been lauded for years as the Billy Bean of the NBA. Exactly how do those advanced analytics used to build an NBA team look right about now?

15. SACRAMENTO KINGS

Outlook: Don't look now, but the Kings suddenly have some exciting young players on this team - Tyreke Evans, DeMarcus Cousins, J.J. Hickson, Jimmer Fredette, Marcus Thornton, Jason Thompson and solid veterans like John Salmons and Travis Outlaw. As an Eastern Conference team, they'd be ninth or 10th. But even the bad teams in the Western Conference are good enough to keep the Kings in the basement.

Sacramento Stiff(s): Owners Joe and Gavin Maloof attempted to hijack the Kings to Anaheim and (purposely?) failed thinking there would be no 2011-12 NBA season, thus giving them enough time to pretend to want to stay in Sacramento while ultimately sending the team to Anaheim in 2012. Um, a funny thing happened on the way to no NBA season in 2011-12...

My predictions

1. Oklahoma City Thunder Durant is a beast, Westbrook is still an a-hole but they will sadly get the top seed.

2. Dallas Mavericks Strong if not just a little stronger than last year, if they face the Thunder in the playoffs again, they’ll win again.

3.Los Angeles Clippers Young and two great players…. CP3 and Griff will be very funny to watch.

4*Los Angeles Lakers* Still plenty of talent, but it will be a off year as I expect their players to be disinterested in playing at this point.

5. Memphis Grizzlies They are going to go through slumps this year but they have the potential to make the finals this year in the right streak*

6. Denver Nuggets I can see us struggling in January, but overall I believe we will finish the season strong and make noise in the playoffs.

7. San Antonio Spurs Old, shell-shocked and won’t favor from a 66 game season.

8. Portland Trailblazers They have talent, that is for sure but I don’t see them contending until they open up their offense a little.

9. Golden State Warriors I think they’ll have streaks of brilliance but they won’t make the playoffs.

10. Phoenix Suns Steve Nash is still good, but their front court and bench is weak.

11. Minnesota Timberwolves They’ll be fun this year and they have too much talent that is young to regress.

12. New Orleans Hornets The West version of the Pistons, mediocre players, not enough youth and they should never of got rid of Collison.

13. Utah Jazz Fall from grace since losing Jerry Sloan, I still think they’ll tank this year for the draft.

14. Sacramento Kings A very good core to build on, but they still won’t be good for awhile.

15. Houston Rockets Strike one, Strike two, and strike three this team will stink.

Your Dallas, LAL, and Memphis ratings are too high

Seriously, Memphis is the GSW of 2007, they will not be as strong as they were in the playoffs. I don’t see where they get all the love. ZBo is pretty lazy during the season. Just watch it!
LAC is a wildcats team, they have talent on paper, so I will slot them at 2.
But I think the Nuggets size can steamroll most teams (we are the new Lakers), sans Kobe, but we still have plenty of scoring.
Don’t underestimate our depth either, I say Nuggets at 3rd spot is pretty realistic. Maybe 2 if the LAC experiment doesn’t work out.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

Look at that Roster!

Tony Allen the defensive specialist who can score, Mike Conley, a solid point guard, Marc Gasol, a top 5 center, Mayo! They still have him and Zach Randolph.

Oh I forgot to mention their best scorer, Rudy Gay who can light things up.

by CloudBurst on Dec 19, 2011 11:10 PM MST up reply actions

They are still a playoff team

But a lower seed is all. ZBo is their main go to guy and I say he starts failing. Also I think Gay has an Ewing theory effect on the team. How did they get so much better when he was injured?
Plus the loss of Battier is understated for the Grizz as he was a great veteran presence.
I think we may miss that with KMart, but I don’t know if we will miss it as badly if Nene dominates the PF spot like he should.

I have no idea what is going to happen

The league had figured out this team by the end of last season. But this is team has so many changes from the one last year. Plus the weird regular season. I think they are a playoff team, but wouldn’t be shocked to see them in any position 1-8. This could be a phenomenal regular season team that has the best record overall and gets killed in the playoffs.

by amlmart1 on Dec 20, 2011 10:57 AM MST up reply actions

I´ve seen that.

The Blazers are no a young team anymore. People who don´t follow the Blazers will be surprised by their new offense. Do you know to which team´s offense it will like to? Yep, the Nugs. Without Brandon they Blazers are made to run and attack the rim. Raymond Felton, Wesley Matthews, Jamal Crawford, LaMarcus Aldridge, Nicolas Batum, Gerald Wallace and Marcus Camby make a team you have to take seriously. They won´t get far in the playoffs but they will be very competitive during regular season, as always has happened with McMillan´s teams.

GET ON BOARD PEEPS!

Hollinger has picked us #2 in the West….the guy is right.

Sick of all the “hero” worship in the NBA when it comes to a superstar. Sure its better to have a superstar than not at a position but it means something to have a “team” and one who fits well together. I can’t believe after we posted a 19-6 post trade regular season record people are so skeptical.Yes we lost to OKC, a damn good team, most all games were close, we were a team that didnt go through training camp together and just experienced adversity for the first time together. AAA was hurt, Chandler and Gallo were playing hurt. What did we see last year from our team, post trade? Great defense, transition offense, shooting and passing. We lost because we couldn’t find a go-to offensive threat against a good defensive team and because Ty and Nene didnt assert themselves. Also because GK didnt play Gallo enough. Why we will be awesome and even better this year?

1) Improvement from Gallo and Ty. These guys wont be superstars but they will be stars and the begginings will be seen this year.

2)Mosgov-doesnt have to score alot but needs to give us post D and rebounding. A frontcourt of him, Nene and Gallo is big and lenghtly and will allow Nene to be guarded by a PF that is smaller than him instead of a C who may be bigger. Nene will blow up on offense. Plus he can will kill opposing PF on D.

3)No JR baggage. This crap hurt us in the playoffs. No more.

4)The top teams sans OKC are down, Lakers do not scare me at all, Mavs got lucky last year and the loss of Chandler and Barea will really hurt, especially on D, SA is getting old but dont sleep on them. Memphis and OKC will be tough, but we are in there with them.

5)Flexibility to get better. We have a trade exception, Miller’s expiring contract, young assets, Chandler sign and trade to use to trade for a piece that could propel us to the next level.

TIME TO GET EXCITED WE ARE GOING TO BE GOOD, FUN AND WE WILL BE CONTENDERS.

WE WILL PLAY OKC IN THE CONF FINALS…BOOK IT AND GO TO VEGAS WITH IT…

Somebody has to be the contrarian...... Come on Down

This season, not unsurprisingly, will be weird.

  • Team most likely to surprise… Sacramento – Think Cousins
  • Team most likely to fall from grace…. San Antonio – see CloudBurst comment
  • Overnight Success…. Clippers – They now have more maturity, stars, excitement
  • Team most hurt by Weirdness…. Your Denver Nuggets
  • Best CloudBurst pick…. Houston – dunno about last but they’ll be bad
  • Finally some life here…. Timberwolves
  • Biggest surprise to make playoffs…. In this season of weirdness there will be one, perhaps GS
  • Most solid…. Portland – with all their bad luck they’ll compete night in, night out

I see the Nuggets being hurt by “holdouts” and front court defense/rebounding. They’ll frustrate from questionable chemistry. Good enough to make the playoffs? Barely, hopefully.

by TakeFive on Dec 20, 2011 10:49 AM MST reply actions

Why barely?

We BARELY lost to the Thunder. WIthout that crazy no-call for goaltending, we had a real shot at the series. Yes, OKC was a better team, but we weren’t too far behind. We have so much room to get better. I know OKC has Durant and that makes them a contender from here on out, but why is everyone so certain their growth will outgrow our’s? In those playoffs we had Felton’s and Chandler’s ridiculously inefficient play and an injured Afflalo. There are many unknowns, but we showed our floor last year: a first round exit.

Except for Bird, most of the Nuggets "weirdness" is gone.

Take five...gotta disagree.

Not sure what these “holdouts” are but I agree rebounding will be a key. We were a weak rebounding team before the trade and after the trade a pretty good one. I think that being bigger will help us, plus we can enter the Manimal in place of Cheeseburger to infuse some boards. We will scare teams in this compressed scheduling with our depth and running. Also we have no egos sans JR. These are all good guys who want to win, Rudy just wants to play and he will be fine. Here are my predictions:

1)OKC
2)Nugs
3)Memphis
4)Clippers
5)Lakers
6)Spurs
7)Mavericks
8)Blazers

Grizz

With Darrell Arthur out, I fear we (Memphis) are now going to let down most of your predictions as a 2-5 seed. We were already thin in the front court after Gasol/Zbo. Brian Skinner and Hamed Haddadi arent going to cut it. Look for Memphis to make a trade or FA signing soon. We are loaded at shooting guard, so look for Mayo/Sam Young/draft picks to go if we make a trade.

That was a tough blow and I agree with your comments.
The good news is that many teams a stacked with Bigs so a trade is very doable. As you point out you don’t need stars, just more depth up front.

Memphis may be my second fave team (will I be drawn and quartered for saying that here?), and I love me some Darrell Arthur off the bench. I was disappointed, to say the least, when I saw the news of his injury.

By the way, Haddadi has indeed gotten more than a few minutes of playing time and, while he ain’t exactly Wilt Chamberlain, I’ve liked what I’ve seen: good effort, some decent skills and plenty of that unteachable thang, too.

Gotta get my pessimistic $0.02 in

I think Jeremy over at RMC mentioned something recently about a chip-on-the-shoulder factor that the Nugs had going for them last season after the trade, and what a big boost that gave them. That factor will not be present this season.

It’s going to be a very weird season, with all the back-to-back-to-backs and so on, so who knows what will really happen. But I’ll be pretty surprised if the Nugs are any higher than 6 or 7, and won’t be shocked if they miss the playoffs.

But as always, I will be rooting for them every game, and hope that those of you who are more optimistic turn out to be right.

Has the chip left?

Most people still have us penciled in for not making the playoffs. Outside of the more astute observers (Hollinger, and Simmons), we are a crappy team.
I am still worried about the playoffs, but way too much can happen between now and then to know how the Nuggets will do. I do know we can be a damn good regular season team.
I believe in Batman to assess our position come March and use Chandler as a trade chip for whatever need we have in March.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

The trade deadline is March 15, for now

the chip

was a result of the Nuggets left behind feeling like Melo had told them “You’re not good enough for me,” and from the arriving former Knicks feeling like they were being told “The whole lot of you are not as good to us as one Carmelo.”

So yes, that chip is gone. I can’t see similar motivation coming from pessimistic preseason predictions.

But what about the fact that they put together that late season push without having played AT ALL with each other. They’ve got that experience under their belt, albeit not enough expereince, but far more than they had before.

What are our weaknesses?

To me we have post scoring with Nene, should be better this year,3 pt shooting with AAA, Gallo, Rudy and AL, slashing with Ty, Gallo and Brewer, distributors in Ty and Andre, Defenders in AAA, Brewer, Nene, shotblockers in Bird and Mosgov, speed, size, athleticism, depth, coaching and no headcases. We are a good passing team and should be able to rebound effectively and if we can watch out…

8-Griz
9-Rockets
10-Wolves
11-Jazz
12-GS
13-Sac
14-Phx
14-NO

Here is what he says about the Nugs:
I know, I know, you think I’m insane. But before you have me committed, hear me out.

If I had to bet on a long-shot team to win the title, Denver would absolutely, positively be the one. Not only are the Nuggets better than people realize, they have more potential for in-season improvement than any other team because of all their trade assets. More importantly, the regular-season format favors them more than any other team in the league.

Remember Portland in 1999, a team with no stars that won big in the lockout season because they threw waves of depth at their weary opponents? This team is the second coming of that squad, minus the technical fouls and incarcerations. The Nuggets go 12 deep, and George Karl, more than perhaps any other coach in basketball, will absolutely use all 12. I’m convinced it’s his dream to become the first coach in history to have 12 players average exactly 20.0 minutes and 8.8 points a game, and he may come close to that goal this season.

Think about this: Andre Miller, Rudy Fernandez, Corey Brewer, Al Harrington and Chris Andersen are Denver’s second five. (The starters are projected to be Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and Nene.) Behind them are two rookie first-round draft picks, Jordan Hamilton and Kenneth Faried, both of whom should contribute immediately. Somewhere in there, beginning around midseason or sooner, is Wilson Chandler too.

Throw in two other factors and I really like Denver this season. First, they’re good: They went gangbusters after the Melo trade last season, going 19-6 with a scoring margin greater than 10 points a game before playing the JV in the finale against Utah. They struggled in the playoffs when they had to depend more on starters-versus-starters matchups and suffered injuries in the backcourt. They’ll likely struggle in the postseason again this season unless they procure another quality big.

But in the regular season? Forget it. The second reason to expect Denver to excel is that the combination of altitude and pace is going to wreak havoc on opponents. With Lawson and Miller pushing the tempo, waves of fresh players checking in — nearly all of whom can run — and exhausted teams sucking wind in the Mile High altitude, I expect the Nuggets to have a ridiculous home record on the order of 28-5 or so. If they achieve that, they need to be only a 15-18 road team to fulfill my prediction. (My projection, by the way, includes a small dose of Wilson Chandler at season’s end, but no Kenyon Martin or J.R. Smith.)

That prediction is based on the roster staying as is. But remember, too, the upshot of Denver’s stealth robbery of the Knicks in the Carmelo Anthony trade. The Nuggets have as many trade assets as any other team in the league. They have a $12 million trade exception from the Anthony deal, lots of young, talented players that other teams want, and a $7.8 million expiring contract belonging to Miller.

If the Nuggets can swing that into another quality big man, their playoff ceiling goes much higher. Barring that, they’ll have a great regular season and another early playoff exit.

But in the big picture, everybody is sleeping on this team. With overwhelming depth, two potential breakout players in Lawson and Gallinari, and tons of trade assets, the Nuggets are in fantastic shape.

Good article

Yes, the rotation part cracked me up, as Karl won’t play 12 deep, but everything else Hollinger talked about was spot on. We are set up well for the future AND the present.

As far as the getting another BIG talk, I believe that must stem from the fact that we looked undersized last year against Perk and Ibaka and Collison. They outplayed us down low. However, I think several things were in play. One, Karl did not play Mozgov or Koufos, allowing Nene to slide to PF. That is a huge factor. Plus, now we have Faried in the mix for energy that can match or outproduce that by Ibaka. So I don’t believe it is necessary to get another BIG. I think you roll with what we have and see how these guys develop. You have to see what you have in Mozgov and Koufos.

Could be for all we know....

I love the style that Faried brings to the game. He’s a great addition.
Still, he’s a rookie so give him a year or two.
The Nuggets still lack the length and athleticism and interior presence of an Ibaka. Faried isn’t that style of player either.

Mozgov has more size and similar athleticism

He can develop faster than Faired too. Karl likes what he sees with Moz.
I know I am in the minority, but Moz will make some noise and Koufus will be a solid backup

You underestimate

Desire. Size is a bit overrated in my opinion. When a guy like Chuck Hayes at 6’6" is able to play Center for the Rockets, and do so admirably, and sometimes very effectively, it tells you all you need to know about size.

True, Ibaka has better measurements, and I really like the kids motor. But Faried I believe will surprise in the same ways, and then it just comes down to desire.

Chuck Hayes was not signed

Oklahoma City Stiff: No one in Denver likes these guys, but the most unlikable Thunder player has to be Kendrick Perkins who all but tried to kill a Nuggets fan after Game 4 of their contentious playoff series against Denver last season.

Most Nuggets fans did indeed hate Westbrook and Karl for ruining that playoff series with his rotations.
That is my biggest fear, we have the talent, but Karl has to use the depth n the playoffs or we will be doomed again.

The problem is the offense is too reliant on fast breaks

which works in the regular season, but not the post season. Even an older team like the spurs can effectively shut down the fast break when they focus on it in the playoffs. They have to make sure they have a legitimate half court offense by the time the playoffs roll around.

We have the right personell for a good half court offense

But will Karl allow it? That is what gives me shivers about this team. Can Karl get over is ego and actually implement a good system? That is my biggest question mark.

I'm calling it now

OKC is overrated. They haven’t added anyone. Durant is a pure shooter. He showed he can’t miss an open shot, but is still relatively sluggish when driving to the rim. He’ll have the same awesome numbers as last year, fine. Kendrick Perkins is a good interior defender; he’ll be no better, no worse. James Harden is really the only one with room to grow, but “point guards” who are reallyjust shooting guards in a 1-guard’s body have a way of stunting growth for those around them. Russel Westbrook had a fantastic year last year, but don’t see him surpassing them this year. They’re a great, young team, but I’m hesitant to get on their bandwagon unless I see reason for their growth.

by RoxWS2014 on Dec 20, 2011 12:01 PM MST reply actions

Have you seen Perkin's new "body?"

Won’t make him into a superstar but OKC 1st or 2nd is a no-brainer.

by TakeFive on Dec 20, 2011 12:17 PM MST up reply actions

OKC is good

But I am sensing KD is not much of a leader and neither is Westbrick or even Scott Brooks.
Their talent will take them far, but when they hit real adversity (like a 4th quarter collapse to Dallas) they don’t respond well. Time will tell if they can adjust, but that is a major weakness for them.

by JR15 on Dec 20, 2011 12:23 PM MST up reply actions

But do they get better or regress?

Nuggets had plenty of playoff experience, Melo didn’t seem to learn anything and I am saying KD could got that route too. I dont know, but as you are saying the Nuggets will suck, I say the Thunder may not be able to develop the right way.

they seemed confused on when and who should have the ball or take the shot when it matters.

by jd80229 on Dec 20, 2011 12:52 PM MST via Android app up reply actions

I disagree

1) Durant is arguably the best player in the league now
2) Even if he’s sluggish driving, he’ll get easy foul calls as a superstar and he’s a lights out FT shooter
3) I noticed him being more of a vocal leader last season and I only see that growing. He’s the leader of that team.
4) Westbrook will likely mature, which has been his biggest weakness
5) That squad gained a ton of experience with their playoff run

I don’t like OKC, but I can’t agree with your assessment. Unless they take themselves too serious and start mailing in games, they’re a lock for the top spot in the West IMHO.

Here in US, you watch NBA; in Soviet Russia, NBA watch you! - LACKov Smirnoff

by Artimus Mangilord on Dec 20, 2011 1:46 PM MST up reply actions

Understand your reasoning

However,
1. KD has nowhere near the athleticism of a Lebron or a Rose, and is too one-dimensional to be considered the best player. Arguably, sure, you can argue it. But ultimately he just isn’t. I went to Texas, am a huge KD fan, but not sold on his ability to put a team on his back (especially when Westbrook thinks that’s his job).

2. Great point on this one. My question is why he doesn’t drive and get to the line when it matters. He rarely drove on us in the playoffs, and it was a huge favor. You can’t teach aggressiveness. Not sure he’ll ever take full advantage of the calls he could get. But I’ll give you that as somewhere he can grow his game.

3. We’ll see if he’s become a leader. Once again, it goes back to Westbrook allowing that to happen.

4. A lot of speculation on whether a player like Westbrook matures. Melo never did. It’s speculation both ways, but the playoffs showed Westbrook’s true colors. Even so, Westbrook is not exactly a superb (or willing) passer, limiting his ability to improve others.

5. Experience only takes you so far…Nuggets made it past the 1st round 1 time after a ton of playoff experience.

Their talent will take them far. But I say they’ll stay right around where they did this past year. If they do well, it will be because the older teams are falling off.

Few teams I don't like...

Dallas got a lot worse defensively and they’re not that deep. Loss of Barrea hurts. They’re relying on Beaubois to stay healthy and Kidd to not be… ya know old. They barely got the #3 seed last year. Liked the Lakers adding Mcroberts but they still had questionable depth before and losing Shannon Brown with no other real gains would be a red flag to me.

Add in Kode age and Gasol’s mental fragileness they’re easily out of the top 4. I see them in the 6 range.

I’m one that thought that Denver would move to the top 4 seeds with health. Depth at all positions and like the mix of players. I worry a bit of mental focus. Hoping Miller and Afflalo can be the ring leaders there.

San Antonio would need the Hill trade to payoff to stay in top 3 seed with this current schedule makeup. Popovich would bench his guys on b2b nights. What does he do for b2b2 mixed in there?

Mine would be as follows

OKC
DEN
DAL
LAC
LAL
SA
MEM
POR

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
