With or without Afflalo, Nuggets will be just fine...

With many Western Conference teams in a state of flux and confusion, the Nuggets will field a 2011-12 roster featuring many holdovers from last season plus new faces in place of some big egos. Get ready for a ninth-consecutive playoff appearance.

Star-divide

Arron Afflalo must be dying to get himself into Denver Nuggets training camp right now.

Thanks to the re-signing of Nene Hilario, the Nuggets now possess one of the Western Conference's most formidable front lines with the 6'11" Nene slotted to start at power forward alongside the 6'10" Danilo Gallinari at small forward and the 7'1" Timofey Mozgov at center. Backed up by Al Harrington, Chris Andersen, Kosta Koufos, Kenneth Faried and (possibly) DeMarre Carroll, this is probably the biggest Nuggets team in franchise history.

And with Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer joining Ty Lawson and Andre Miller in the Nuggets' back court, the Nuggets added much needed speed and length at shooting guard to compensate for Lawson's diminutive size and Miller's slowness at point guard. A third point guard might still be needed, and it's likely rookie Jordan Hamilton will spend some time in the D-League with the Nuggets' roster filling out quickly.

Longtime Denver Stiffs readers know I've always been a fan of Fernandez. He's an athletic gunslinger who's not afraid to take a big shot. Fernandez's exceptional performance against the "Redeem Team" in the 2008 Summer Olympics is how I'll always think of Rudy. 22 points on 7-13 shooting, 5-9 from three-point range and no fear going up against Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Unfortunately, his NBA career numbers have been nothing to cheer about, notably his field goal and three-point shooting that plummeted to 37% and 32.1% last season, respectively. Questions have also surfaced in the past about Fernandez's attitude, but he's a competitor who wants to win and be on the floor in clutch situations. Kind of like J.R. Smith, oddly, who the Spaniard is essentially replacing.

Conversely, I've never liked Brewer's game. A lanky 6'8" guard/small forward, Brewer doesn't seem to have one discernible skill to cling to and for the 7th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft (two slots ahead of his Florida teammate Joakim Noah), he has essentially been a bust. Brewer's game reminds me of DerMarr Johnson's, another lanky guard/small forward drafted too high (6th overall in 2000) and just never panned out. But for a backup-to-a-backup small forward/shooting guard, having Brewer on the roster doesn't hurt.

In regards to re-signing Nene for what could-be upwards of $67 million over five years, I'm thrilled from a basketball perspective and skeptical from a business perspective. Should Nene stay healthy and thrive at power forward, this will look like a good deal until the fourth and fifth seasons when my fellow Stiffs are griping about how we're grossly overpaying a 34 and then 35 year-old player. But committing $13ish million per season to Nene, plus another $8 or $9 million per season to Afflalo (which could very likely happen) will hamstring the Nuggets' ability to bring in big free agents next summer.

But with this recent spate of moves it's a fair question to ask whether or not the Nuggets really need Afflalo back. I say "yes" (for the right price, as always) as you can't trust Fernandez and his shaky shooting to start at two-guard, Brewer has no business starting, Hamilton isn't ready and I cringe to think of a Miller/Lawson two point guard back court. For all those reasons, we need Afflalo back but his return isn't essential for a postseason return.

Surveying the rest of the Western Conference, I foresee the Oklahoma City Thunder, Memphis Grizzlies and Dallas Mavericks - as presently constructed - being the class of the conference with the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs just behind them. The Lakers in particular appear to be on the verge of total disarray with a new coach having to deal with Kobe's disgust over the Lamar Odom loss, Pau Gasol's (you know they're coming) emotional issues, Ron Artest's nuttiness, Derek Fisher's age and never-ending Dwight Howard talk. I almost feel bad for Mike Brown already, but I'm sure he knows what he signed up for.

Those remaining three Western Conference playoff spots (in no particular order) will go to our Nuggets, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Clippers, who just acquired Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets. For the Nuggets to vault themselves into the Western Conference's upper tier, Gallo, Moz and Lawson must become substantially better players this season.

(As an aside, what a joke this Paul deal is for the NBA. I'm still recovering from the shock of the NBA screwing the Lakers on trying to obtain Paul last week and now Paul gets to join Mo Williams, Chauncey Billups, Eric Bledsoe and Randy Foye on a point guard-jammed Clippers team. Although a starting five of Paul, Billups, Blake Griffin, Caron Butler and DeAndre Jordan should find itself into the postseason.)

The Nuggets did themselves good by re-signing Nene and pulling a heist job by snaring Fernandez and Brewer for a second round draft pick (and trade exemption). Let's see if they can swing an Afflalo re-signing next to round out a very exciting 2011-12 roster.

Still smiling about Nene...

But I think getting Arron is crucial. Nugs need a good, consistent 2 guard, and he could be that guy for a while. He’s basically nothing but upside at this point in his career.

Yeah R.I.P. City is correct

Blazers fans have wanted to rebuild since acquiring Miller and they finally get their chance. That team is in shambles. Roy and Oden are broken and the unfortunate news about Aldridge’s health makes an already thin roster look wafer thin. Depending on what happens with Aldridge I wouldn’t be surprised to see Portland on the bottom of the division. The front office is obviously willing to throw in the towel if the Gerald Wallace for picks rumor was true. It’s a two team race in the Northwest Division, bring on OKC!

Blazers lineup:

PG: Ray Felton / Patty Mills
SG: Wes Matthews / Jamal Crawford
SF: Gerald Wallace / Nic Batum / Luke Babbitt
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge / (?)
C: Marcus Camby / Greg Oden, eventually

A little thin, but that team should be able to get into the playoff hunt out West.

Apparently we are high on Nolan Smith.

I don´t know what to think about that. Last year the Blazers were high on Armon Johson and Nate had to bench him almost the whole season. I would not be surprised if the Blazers play Jamal Crawford at point.

Afflalo's market getting soft?

I think all the silence on Afflalo is because Nuggets don’t want to bid against themselves and competition is dropping out. The only Afflalo rumors in the past two weeks have linked Bulls, Lakers, and Nets. Hyperactive NY media has the Nets going after every free agent. Bulls got Hamilton. Maybe Arron wants to go to the Lakers to start (do they have a starting shooting guard?). Maybe the Pacers want to reprise their overpayment of Dahnte.

I think you guys are missing the fact that.....

AAA will be perfect on the Clippers. They need a 2, he is an LA kid, they have cap space, and him and Chauncey are boys from their Detroit days. The reason Afflalo has not signed yet is because CB is pushing LAC GM Neil Olshey, and Sterling to take a long hard look at him, as I am also sure he is in Arron’s ear telling him to come home and be a part of something special. (CP3, AAA, Caron, BG and DeAndre is a squad) The guy would be solidify that team. I hope the Nugs don’t lose him. He brings so many things to the table. It would be a huge loss!! I too am a fan of Rudy, but he can fill JR’s role of giving them that offensive spark off the bench. I don’t think you want him to be your starting two just yet because of his liability on the defensive end.

And, Denver’s size on the front line will spell trouble for other teams. Agree that Chandler and Kmart were Great defenders, and will be missed, but this is a young talented team that Denver should be excited about.

We should be excited about this team, but

it’s ridiculous to say that Nene is “one of the best post defenders in the league.” He blocks one shot and has never averaged 8 rebounds per game. There were so many instances during that OKC series when I was screaming at Nene through the T.V. to at least TRY to play defense, put your hands up, do SOMETHING!

by Elias Van Son on Dec 15, 2011 9:20 AM MST up reply actions

Being a good defender doesn’t always have to mean you get a lot of blocks and rebounds. Being a good defender could mean something like holding Dwight Howard to 5 points in a game, etc. Nene did pretty good defensive wise, and you have to remember that he plays out of his position.

Brewer

Corey Brewer didn’t pan out as a seventh pick, yet he does have some upside as a defender and intelligent role player. I liked NugNugz’s assessment of Brewer in yesterday’s thread on the Dallas trade:

Absolutely fantastic wing defender. He will crush the spirit of the man he is guarding. Stays in front of the ball, long arms, athletic as all get out. Underrated passer – he does not play PG (someone above said he does). But he does have nice vision when he penetrates and dish[es].

Maybe Brewer is the guy who takes long turns frustrating the Durants of the league. He can have a go at defending both shooting guards and small forwards. I’m glad we got him, especially since he came cheap.

No. More. Stickyball.

by Elias Van Son on Dec 15, 2011 9:26 AM MST up reply actions

We need AAA badly

If we start AAA alongside Ty, with Moz, Nene & Gallo leading front court, we are big, fast, talented.

With no AAA, and with Karls lunacy in starting Miller, we become much shorter, much slower, much older. And, if we start Miller, we lose an off the bench point guard.

Neither AAA, Gallo, Nene, Ty or Moz are big stars but they have to be teamed together for max impact. If we knock one out and substitute with a weak link, we take a big step back. You know, a chain is only as strong….

Nuggets can compete with the Thunder if, 1) post trade was not a mirage, 2) our good players impact each other synergistically.

Finally, I cant resist. If the Lakers were screwed by the non-deal, well if you’ve been doing all the screwin’ for 40 years, it’s OK if you’re asked to turn around and lean over for a change, ya know what I’m saying?

most important thing I take from it is that with Rudy, we still have a little off the bench pop

Look, I know that NBAers have to have some ego and some confidence but JR was too polarizing, though talented and Ray played the game with one eye on his stats and his perceived value.

If Rudy gets miffed, we could just ignore him. If Miller gets obnoxious, well he’s kind of old anyway.

Hey people we beat Memphis without Melo and all those trade assets/ they were hot and it was the same Memphis team that scared OKC.
We already own Dallas. SA is on the downfall, they may be ok but I think they are too old for this 66 game season.
Lakers are seriously worse than the Nuggets. The new Nuggets already beat them when they had Odom and Jackson. This team has Mike Brown who does not know how to coach an offense and Gasol is done in LA.

Agreed

OKC is better than us, but not to the point where we will be completely outclassed (I hope). Spurs? psh. Memphis did well and I think they will be a force. LAC should be a pretty good team and I can see them landing the 4th seed. The Lakers? Who knows, but if they don’t get Dwight, I think they will crumble. To me, Dallas is the only wild card in the bunch. I have no idea what to expect from them.

As for us, I am putting us at either the 3, 4, or 5th seed for the playoffs.

After the trade

we danced thru the West, and the East, North and South, for that matter.

We lost to OKC because half of our team was injured. If we have 2 – 3 guys injured for 1st round, I expect a loss again.

As for the West, it is wide open. There is one very stable team and that is OKC. The other teams, including Denver, have lots of question marks. But, judging from how we played after the trade, in the regular season, didnt we look a bit more set than everyone else including the Mavs.

A little premature

You are counting a single game against Memphis to say The Nugs have a better team.
And that was the first game without either teams starting SF.
The nuggets seem pumped at home, while the Grizzlies seem to have no fire in them.

I though Memphis was going to drop out of the playoffs, because the lost gay. It seem they recovered and started to play great ball.

The Nuggets are not the same Nuggets as last year, they are missing 3 of those players, and also you seem to give too much imoprtance to a single win the previous year during the regular season.

K-mart was the best big man defender the NUgs had, and he is gone. Playing against any of those teams you mention he contained tehir biggest threat, now he won’t be available.

I'm always supporting JR wherever he goes

No way he can play in Denver with the way Karl wastes his talent away.
I don’t think the clip joint should be where he joins.
He should try the Bulls, because he is better than Rip and that team could beat Miami

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

Oops didn't know about CP3

Well I guess JR could reunite with Paul, and it would work well. I still think they need a better coach than Vinny del Negro

I like JR too

he is as explosive as anyone in the NBA but lets face it, he is immature and he does take a lot of work- he’s a long day.

But, given a good situation, I think he could really be a great asset and if he’s hot, I’d just as soon have to face Durant.

Obviously

We’re a better team with AAA than without him. That’s without question.

However, I think I agree with this article (well, the title at least) in that AAA isn’t the player that makes or breaks us. Without AAA though, or options come down to this:

1. Sign or trade for an SG we can start.
2. Throw J-Ham straight into it and start him.
3. 2-PG lineup with Andre.
4. Start Rudy.

Another possible option might be go big with Brewer but I’d say that’s the least possible option. It sure shakes things up not having AAA come back, but it’s better that it gets done now if it’s going to happen.

I haven't mentioned it yet

But I’m a big fan of the Rudy Fernandez signing.

I really like that guy. Still think we need AAA. I’ve been saying, even with Afflalo back, Denver would need some help on the wing.

Let’s get this done.

No disrespect to Andrew, as I agree the Nuggets are fine without Afflalo, but I don’t want Denver to be fine, I want them to contend for a championship. And having a lockdown defender with a monster work ethic and someone who can score 20 ppg in the flow of the game and hit clutch shots is pretty effing important in taking that step.

But man, after watching Nene’s press conference, I really believe him. Add in the fact that he probably could have gotten more money out of the Nuggets and its pretty amazing. Even if J.R. is “crazy” (I actually think he could be bipolar) it’s still a nasty habit that makes GK look petty. Maybe he’d be better served to just not say always what he thinks. I think it doesn’t really engender good will towards other players that might think of coming here.

He can say whatever he wants. If what says now deters players from wanting to play for him then it’s their loss. Karl is very well respected around the league and his speaking honestly from the heart, pulling no punches, won’t change that. As my Dad always says, “honesty is the best policy”

I disagree

I think people are driven nuts by the media, as Fly is, but especially the national media. I know that’s what drove me nuts when he was in Florida. I think the religious aspect is overblown, many NFL players are just as religious but Tebow gets more press for it(and does a lot of good with it). I’m atheist and have never felt like he was pressing his religious views on me, even his anti-abortion ad in the SB was quite tame. I am still annoyed by the national media myself, or at least when it was week 7 and a Broncos-Dolphins crapfest was the second highlight of SportsCenter, behind the WS.

i don't disagree, but where the fringe comes in

is that his followers DO puch their agenda despite the fact many of them couldn’t care less about football, just champion his christianity, and on the other side, equally disinterested athiests start literally hating the man and his followers because of the loud and large fringe element.

i’m personally agnostic and a huge tebow fan, but because i see so much potential in him as a football player. i just wish that was where the majority of the conversation on him was.

is he is one of the top 10 perimeter defenders in the NBA, that is his bread and butter, I saw a few games from him last year.. he makes it tough for penetrating guards.

I see general agreement - sign AAA

Yes, Andrew, we’ll be good w/o him, too. But he contributes efficiently at both ends and in the locker room so I think we need him – even at 8 million.

One bone to pick: some stiffs seem to think Hamilton is a SG, but he really looks like a SF to me. He’s not quick enough to cover AAA (for instance) much less Monte Ellis or Kobe. Should be able to put up some points after a stint in the D League, though.

Other bone to pick: why has the NBA League Pass greatly increased in price this year for a shorter season? Gimme a break !

Go Nuggets!

George Karl likes to run, and I think that will fit Rudy’s personality as a player. If the Nuggets re-sign Afflalo, Rudy may end up as 6th man, soI hope he is OK with that.

I appreciate some more back story on Rudy

Always liked his style before. Not that I know he was held back somewhat, I can’t wait to have him as a contributor to the Nuggets. I imagine him an Miller coming off the benching being an absolutely killer backcourt.

by Monkfish on Dec 15, 2011 7:09 AM MST up reply actions

Thanks amimart

That was a very informative post on Rudy

I will say that the little I’ve seen of Rudy, I have not been really impressed because there seem to be long patches of inconsistency.

But I’ve also noted really good skills and good physical ability if you discount strength.

I’m happy with this pick up and with Brewer because they deepen our bench. Also, I get a sense that they both have potential that may not be realized but that we should take a gamble on.

I bet that at some point in this season, we will need both Brewer and Rudy to step up because, 1) AAA may not sign with us (shudder the thought!), 2)injuries, slumps

Look at how deep the Mavericks had to go. Look at how the Heat’s lack of depth hurt them when one of their stars gagged. Depth, like height, speed and strength are good in the NBA and Rudy and Brewer give us depth

Nuggets offered a guaranteed contract to james white

strange italian article http://www.sportando.net/eng/italy/serie-a/33379/denver_nuggets_offered_a_guaranteed_contract_to_james_white.html

Denver Nuggets asked to Scavolini Siviglia Pesaro James White. The SF, best scorer in Serie A last season with Sassari, won’t move from Pesaro because his contract doesn’t have buyout or escape.
His agent, Marco Damiani, confirmed to La Gazzetta dello Sport the proposal: “Nuggets were interested in James. The offered him an important role, the main SF of the lineip. White will stay with Pesaro”.
Sports director of Pesaro confirmed as well the proposal: “James had an important offer from Nuggets. A guaranteed one. But his contract doesn’t have buyout. We won’t shop him”

Article kind of sounds like bullshit. But apparently this guy was briefly a nugget and couldn’t beat out Joey Graham for a roster spot.

Are we going to have to do 3 point goggles for Rudy?

I prefer the I’ve got five on it vs. 3 pt goggles.
This team looks like it has a Spurs blueprint of defense and character guys. Aka a lot of white guys too(good news is these aren’t Anerican white guys but Euros who actually are good) and I do consider Tony Parker to be white just cuz he is from France lol.
But I miss my Thuggets already. I loved when the nuggets were crazy and they were hated by many, now they look serious and want to win a ship. I can get behind that too though.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

I'm sure if we get a ship

we would all be over the Thugget era!

Nuggets intrasquad scrimmage tomorrow is FREE!

Doors open at 5:00 pm, game is at 6:00 pm. Seating is first come, first serve.

Could be fun!

Not sure.

If the game is free, I presume they will not ding you for parking.

I plan to go and bring my son. Should be fun.

by Pusherman on Dec 15, 2011 12:34 PM MST up reply actions

I knew I was asking too much

I’m gonna try to make it. Should be fun. Hopefully it’s more than a few minutes of scrimmage outside of a shootaround.

Just cut the sucker off

Most of us could go without a stupid pinkie.

Also: is that why Marion has the NBA’s ugliest shot? Even Beidrin’s free throws are prettier than his motion. Mind, Shaun’s shot seem to find home at a decent clip.

Still, I have nothing but contempt for him and his ugly shot and stupid pinkie.

My league pass is only $99 and I won’t be billed until February. By then I’ll be feeling no pain.

I benefit from being a Suns market subscriber. I just pick the skinny package that allows me to pick any 5 teams.

I feel like Sammy D should sign with the Celtics

He will be useless in Houston, and can at least help the dinosaurs over there.
They are thinking about starting KG at the 5.
I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised with Nene’s production at his true spot, while KG’s numbers should drop steeply and it’s not just because of his age.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
