Nuggets add Fernandez & Brewer for future 2nd rounder
According to Marc Stein of ESPN (great insider for the Mavericks), the Nuggets have agreed to send a future second round draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer. The Nuggets had previously flirted with Brewer during the Carmelo Anthony trade, but instead added Kosta Koufos from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Fernandez is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He is set to make $2.1 million this season and has a $3.1 million qualifying offer for the 2012-13 season.
Brewer on the other hand is locked up through the 2012-13 season. He's set to make just over $3 million this season and $3.2 million next season.
Fernandez is a 6'6'' shooting guard who has averaged 9.1 points per game throughout his career. In his three NBA seasons however, he has seen his PPG drop from his rookie season of 10.4 ppg to 8.6 ppg last season with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Fernandez has a tricky attitude as his role with the Blazers was never a steady one. He averaged just 24.1 minutes per game during his career in Portland and was often involved in rumors being unhappy with his role with the team. Fernandez is a star in his homeland of Spain and has enjoyed a fine international career. He's just 26 years-old and will turn 27 years-old in April. He's probably best remembered by Nuggets fans for the time when Chris Andersen tattooed "Spalding" to his face and for his memorable duels with J.R. Smith. Swish and Fernandez didn't seem to have a lot of love for one another and a few times looked like they could come to blows on the court.
Brewer on the other hand is a 6'9'' shooting guard or small forward with a wiry frame and a knack for playing tough defense who has averaged 8.0 points per game. He was a part of a couple great Florida Gator teams that won back-to-back championships. He hasn't quite found the success he was supposed to have in the NBA, as he bounced around in obscurity in Minnesota. During his 13 game run with the Mavs last season, he did show signs of his defense prowess and a knack for knocking down the long ball. Not a great shooter or scorer, Brewer his very athletic and really needs a breakout 5th season. Just 25 years-old (26 in March) there is still room for improvement.
Hopefully both players will find a role with the Nuggets. I can't see George Karl having a long string with Fernandez and he probably will get a pretty good inside scoop on him from his friend and former player Nate McMillan, who coached Rudy in Portland. Brewer's ability to play multiple positions should go a long way in him seeing some time on the floor ahead of rookie Jordan Hamilton, but it could be a good battle in practice.

Good trade..
I think this is a solid move. Adds depth. If Nene and AAA get signed the Nuggets should be be ready to roll.
Forbes and JR replaced by Rudy and Brewer.. uh toss up.. Nuggets still have a lot of cap space to make up..

Putting this together with the draft day trade:
The Nuggets traded Felton and a future second rounder for Miller, Rudy, Brewer, and a 1st round pick that became Hamilton. That’s a good trade.
The Mavs traded Rudy, Brewer, and a 1st round pick for a future second. Not so good.

Good trade for this year
Filling up salary slots with talent and giving us a viable bench just like that. Not thrilled that this will certainly bury Hamilton in GK’s 11th man role, but that probably would have happened anyway.
Hamilton's probably our backup 3, no?

In a perfect world, yes
in GK’s “no rookie” world with a kid that is a pure gunner that will very seriously need to work on developing defense and team game??? I think Carroll and probably AAA getting minutes there behind Gallo, along with these new cats.
I would love to see Ham getting 15-20 per game, my guess is that he’s lucky to take off the warmups except in back/back/back games.
If we are going to get value out of Rudy, he has to start. Off the bench he will have an attitude problem.
That means no Afflalo
Because if we get Afflalo back (AND WE BETTER), Rudy is coming off the bench.

We are not overpaying for AAA. If he’ll take 4-5 m a year, he can come back. As much as I like him, he just isn’t worth more than that. Rudy is great AAA insurance. If AAA comes back, then we’ve got him, we don’t need Rudy. If he doesn’t Rudy will get to start and will have a much better attitude and, hopefully, production.
Not a bad idea to start Rudy if we don't keep AAA or Nene
We could have Ty, AAA, Rudy, Gallo, Mozgov or Ty, Rudy, Gallo, Nene, Mozgov. Or something else. Who knows.

I think we can assume with some confidence
that if Nene is not here, Harrington is a starter. He may be anyway.
I actually don't hate that.
I think a healthy Fat Al with starter minutes could be a good source of points (for both teams).

Not Sure how many games we will win...
But I am really excited to watch this group compete. Other than Miller and Al, every player is pretty young, and it will be fun to watch them develop. Most all of them have some potential to improve… and if they all did, we could really have a deep TEAM…
Whether it is “better” or not… I hate the “few Stars and scrub filler” nba strategy. I love the team method… which is what we will have this year.
How does Gallo feel about starting at the 4 instead of 3?
by NotWorriedAboutNuggets on Dec 13, 2011 4:41 PM MST via mobile reply actions
I don't see this move moving Gallo to the 4 at all. Don't think the Nuggets will go that route.
Rudy cannot start at the 3, he’s too thin/short. Brewer can play a little 3, but he’s better suited at the two as well.

by NotWorriedAboutNuggets on Dec 13, 2011 4:44 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
I even floated that around when I talked about wanting to see the Nuggets chase Thaddeus Young. But Denver doesn’t have anyone capable of starting at the 3 in place of Gallo so it makes no sense to go with small ball. Especially when the Nuggets have Harrington, Faried, Andersen and Koufos on the roster that can get some burn at the 4 spot.

The Mavs valued
BOTH players combined to be worth a future 2nd round pick. Does that ring anyones bells? If these guys had value of any kind they could have asked for Faried or Ham for both of them or something to that nature but a 2nd round pick for those two combined? That is what the previous Champions see them as. Apparently Denver is much further away from contenton that i thought.

Brewer is obviously a scrub
but at least a scrub that’s worthy of a low bench spot. Fernandez is in this deal because he/his agent wanted to get him out of Dallas after they added Vince and Odom and pushed him down the depth chart.

We could have had Odom
had we offered anything of value. Kupchak said there was no trade interest at the time. So yeah, sort of just like Odom: two emotional players demanding trades, and getting their wish.
We could have afforded it, no?
Nene/AAA would get bird-rights protections? I think that it would not have been an issue.
I'm not suggesting we should have grabbed Odom
just saying we could have if we wanted to, because LAL got no offers of value. Frankly I would have applauded an Odom deal assuming Nene comes back. Without Nene, we should be in rebuild.
Brewer makes a great backup
sure, he can’t shoot for beans, but he is a really good defensive player, and his size at the point guard position gives the other team trouble more often than not. I just wouldn’t want to see him starting.
Atheist for Tebow!
I sincerely hope
he’s never playing point for us.
You remember incorrectly.
Very incorrectly. Brewer is a poor ball handler for a two guard, much less a point. He NEVER played the point in MN.
He is, however, a very, very disruptive defensive player that Karl will like.
so the Nuggets
are banking on holding their opponents to under 60 every night? Cuz at this point that is what is going to take to win.

That's too simplistic
I’m sure the Lakers didn’t value Odom as low as what they got in return, but they have a plan(well they may not but they believe they do). Dallas is focused on a major haul next offseason and an incredible team the year after.

they have a master plan
and im sure will end up with Dwight Howard and able to sign some free agent we all aren’t discussing next year. The Nuggets move shows nothing of that. It shows Massai has madea very poor attempt in trying to replace JR and Wilson. If he thinks Rudy will serve as a respectable 6th man which all indications look like that is what’s going to happen this team will finish in the lottery. Also Brewer just means one of our rooks is going to the DLeagu most likely Hamilton in which im sure he’ll turn into the next Demar Johnson and sign in Toronto in 3 years just like every other wing player we draft and send to the D league.

You are valuing every move at the same level if importance and that's a flaw
the Mavs and Nuggets are at different positions at this time, while Dallas can look for an all star overhaul next year the Nugs can’t. JR and Chandler being idiots and locking themselves in China is in no way Masai’s fault and he needs to build around it. And the rookies will still be here if they earn it. The Nuggets didn’t even give anything up to gain some depth, this isn’t a huge deal and probably not one to panic about. I believe you are expecting something huge and are upset because this isn’t it but you are reacting as if it is a very important deal and there is no need to IMO.

no i am not expecting
anything huge by any means… trust me. I honetsly just cannot stand Rudy Fernandez and never have since he’s been in the league so i have a bit of a bias there and Brewer just flat out sucks. I just don’t understand Ujiri’s game plan here. What this team is in obvious dire need of right now is scoring and instead he adds another defensive wing in Brewer and a very poor option for 6th man. I just think he could have dont a little better on that front.

thats why what we gave them is not too steep.
A second rounder for some offense and defense off the bench. I’ll take that anyday
Dallas is also clearing room for next season. They should have about $20M-$25M in cap space.
Cuban values Deron and Dwight over these two for sure.

Definitely Dwight as Dallas in on of the teams he's said he'd resign with.
D-Will is more speculative. I betting he’s OK in Brooklyn, wants the five years.
You're over-simplifiying
You also have to consider “known quantities” vs. a hypothetical 2nd rounder who may be great or may suck wind at the end of a bench.
This is clearly a good trade for the Nuggs, and it works out for Dallas, too, since they’re trying to free up cap space for 2012.
I know
these two will serve as a 6th man and a tacos player thus stunting our rookies growth and giving us absolutely no legit scoring off the bench at all. It makes a team that was as deep or deeper than any team last year look like the JV version of it.

People in Portland love him
According to the Mavs blog, they would rather have him over Vince (low bar).
Thre has to be a reason.
I agree about disliking Rudy.
He has a bad history for Nuggets fans. He’s a flopper and he’s got that irrational confidence like J.R. Smith … plus he played for one of our rivals.
Rudy hasn’t been a consistent player and he has shown he’ll talk if he’s unhappy, to the media. He will get some minutes in Denver and the chance like you say to be the bench scorer, but will that make him happy? I can’t see Denver re-signing AAA and not giving him 30+ minutes per game. Plus we have Karl talking about Miller/Lawson in crunch time … that would mean our crunchtime lineup is:
PG: Lawson
SG: Miller (will dominate ball)
SF: Afflalo, he’s clutch
PF: Gallo, loves big moments
C: Mozgov (the rebounder)
That lineup scares me.

Whta I like about Rudy
is that he is a 36% 3 point shooter, can drive to the lane, is a hustle defender, hits his free throws at 85%, but his overall FG% is what I don’t like at just under 40%, give me AAA at the starting SG position any day.

Shoots free throws like the PPF
That I agreed to never mention.
We're really talking about either of these guys starting?
Why?! Why would you move Gallo to the 4 to play Brewer or Fernandez when we can start Faried and Hamilton instead and get them valuable PT? (assuming AAA doesn’t come back to start at 2).
These guys should just be considered live bodies with maybe a little potential, but in no means should we be centering our rotation around giving these guys a lot of PT.

AAA is definitely coming back
I have a feeling he has told other suitors to hold off because he will be a Denver Nugget. I just don’t understand why we are taking so long to sign him.
He also represented the Nuggets in the lockout and is pretty keen on signing here and taking a bigger role.
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
if we get AAA back
I think Rudy picks up most of the slack from J.R, I agree that we shouldn’t start him at all though. AAA was shooting around 50% from the field last year and was shooting like.. what ? 44% from 3 point land? He is superior to Rudy in my opinion, except int hat Rudy can create his own shots better.

will be starting. rudy will only if we don’t sign aaa which i think of course we will.

we should overpay him a little
the deal is…we still must get back AAA, and still have hope for Nene.. though I’d be cool if we picked up Mr. Kardashian. This season it will be nice to have a young, deep bench. We could have a full 2nd squad of viable players
we still easily have enough to match AAA's offer
unless they pay 11-16 mil for him, in which case.. he is all yours.

Look
Rudy is a 85% free throw shooter while J.R Smith is 74% , his shot selection at three point lnd is much better, his defense is solid playing for one of the best defenses for the past 4 years and he and J.R Smith are even in terms of 3 point percentage. I gree J.R Smith is more athletic but give me a case that J.R is better and maybe you might sway my opinion.
So far, I’m really excited about this move.
Atheist for Tebow!
JR Smith has the abillity
to change the outcome of an NBA game, Rudy does not. JR is a much more dominant offensive force and has many more tools than Fernandez. JR can run the point occassionally and is a fairly good passer, Fernandez could not. JR never flops, Rudy does.

For less than $6 mill combined this year and cost only 1 fufure 2nd round pick? If Nene and AAA don’t get resigned they still have cap room and flexibility to make more moves.

okay fine but look at it this way
so the Nuggets roster is now at 12. Seeing as they will cut Carrol and probably send Hamilton to the D League that leaves the roster at 10. WIth those two bench players the Nuggets now have 30 mil tied into next season. That means they need to spend anoth 19 mil just to get to the floor. If Nene leaves guess who gets that mony, just so we can reach the floor? Dalembert.

Kupchak wants to keep Bynum & Gasol but still pull a “big” deal. Unless he trades the Magic statue I’m not sure how.
Woj had a very interesting article about the Lakers (weekend)
Now that the son is running things (Bill?) Bynam was his find so he’s VERY reluctant to part with him.
I live in Minnesota
and got to see Brewer on a regular basis for the better part of two years.
Here’s what I can say about him:
The positives:
Absolutely fantastic wing defender. He will crush the spirit of the man he is guarding. Stays in front of the ball, long arms, athletic as all get out.
Underrated passer – he does not play PG (someone above said he does). But he does have nice vision when he penetrates and dish. He also runs the Pick and Roll fairly effectively
Great teammate – no bitching to the coaches, no cancer in the locker room.
Decent shot from the corner
Great finisher on the break
Negatives
Unless he is finishing on the break or occasionally shooting from the corner, you do not want this guy shooting.
My girlfriend and I call him “Good Ol’ Chicken Legs” for a reason. Dude could stand to put on some weight.
he sounds perfect for the nuggs so long as he doesn't shoot. thanks for the passer info.

oh I'd love to have him in addition to Brewer!
play Smith at the 4, Brewer at the 3, and AAA at the 2 for periods of time and seriously no one is scoring against the Nuggets (unfortunately no one is scoring FOR us either)
Brewer has a decent 3pt
at least from the corner
yeah he's money on corner 3
what i meant by that is Smith has a tendency to just hoist 3s even though everyone and their mother knows he needs to stop shooting them. Brewer, thankfully, is not like that.
perfect candidate for Steve Hess to work with
Get him bigger and stronger legs, may help his shooting in the long run.

Guys, I'm upset
We traded a second round pick for two serviceable bench players, used a soon-to-be expiring trade exception to do it, and don’t have to sign our scrub practice players to fill out a squad. The worst thing about it is, is these two bench players don’t cost much, and their contracts aren’t that long.
I AM LIVID!!!!!
DenverStiffs > MileHighReport
guess we sent a 2016 2nd rounder
for Rudy and Corey. its a pick we got from Memphis back in 09 when we sent them steven hunter and our first rounder.

The Nuggets still want to sign Chandler when he returns to the United States, most likely in March, but fending off the competition to keep Nene was always Denver’s No. 1 offseason priority.
roster
ty/ Dre/ Stone
Afflalo/Fernandez/hamilton
Gallo/chandler/Brewer
Nene/Bird/faried
Mozgoc/Koufos
poor rooks
That looks good
If we tell Mozgov to just go out there and get rebounds, that will take a load off of Nene’s game.

You got to wonder if Karl will start Andre over Ty
but overall, the roster looks like…
Ty/Andre/Brewer
AAA/Rudy/Hamilton/Brewer
Gallo/Harrington?/Brewer
Nene/Bird/Faried
Moz/Kouf/Bird
That starting lineup is good, Gallo will need to create shots, Lawson and Nene should be working on their pick and rolls, Moz needs to get those putbacks in. AAA just needs to hit his 3’s which he always does.
The bench should be interesting, if Harrington is healthy and can play like he did early last season, then he and Rudy can provide a good offensive threat, with Miller alley-ooping to Kouf, Bird and Faried. We have some strong defensive players in Brewer, AAA and Rudy. This should be a solid team.

Seeing the Nets get snubbed over and over again is starting to become a bit pleasing

they are always making fun of our Gm
they keep calling him a used cars salesman, I was just standing up for him, I’m tired of the Nets fans ridiculing us. They do it a lot more than you think.
Atheist for Tebow!
But they are irrational and hilarious all by their own, no need to poke

well I think I riled up a few funny comments
They are hilarious though, I didn’t mean any offense when I posted there. I just told them to keep sucking.

And general manager Masai Ujiri said Tuesday night that progress had been made toward re-signing restricted free agent guard Arron Afflalo. "Today was a good day for the Nuggets," Ujiri said.

Hamilton Gone, Rudy Next
Word on the street is that Hamilton was sent to DAL in the trade and Rudy is looking for a buyout. That leaves us with Brewer. FAIL.

Everything's coming up roses!
Nene back to anchor the team. To play at power forward alongside tall Center and tall small forward.
Rudy and Corey are also tall, young, athletic. So what if neither has star quality/ability?
They have specific abilities, could fill in when our better players go out and we got them for nuthin! What more could you ask for.
Now if we could only get AAA and we are ready to go to WAR!!!
Thank You Nene.
At a time when people leave for more $. You stayed. Hope that put a statue of in in front of the Pepsi Center for being a lifelong Nugget.
I got the feeling most of you guys didn't like him much before...
Because he is kind of soft.
