Golden Nuggets: Roster uncertainty looms over Nuggets training camp...

Three days into the Denver Nuggets' truncated 2011 training camp, there's still no Nene Hilario, no Arron Afflalo and questions about what "Plan B" might be.

Star-divide

Our Denver Nuggets may be at the mercy of the NBA free agency trade winds, as our top two free agent priorities - Nene Hilario and Arron Afflalo - are second priorities for the other teams rumored to want their services.

In regards to Nene, the latest rumors had the New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets and Indiana Pacers seeking #31's services. But with the Pacers signing former New Orleans Hornet David West to a two-year, $20 million deal, you have to figure the Pacers are out of the Nene sweepstakes. The Rockets have cap room to sign Nene, as well, but they've made an offer to the Memphis Grizzlies' Marc Gasol (which will be matched by the Grizzlies), as well. And with the Nets in hot pursuit of Dwight Howard, anything between the Nets and Nene may have to wait until Howard's fate is determined.

Which makes one wonder: at what point does Nene start feeling "disrespected" by all these other franchises who are ostensibly making him a secondary priority, while the Nuggets have offered him a substantial five-year deal (a season longer than any other team can offer) that's just sitting on the table? Moreover, all of Nene's talk about playing for a contender hardly holds water when he's flirting with the Nets, Rockets and Pacers. (Granted, should the Nets get Howard to join Deron Williams and sign Nene, they'd be an instant contender in the Eastern Conference. But the Rockets and Pacers aren't contending for anything anytime soon.) In fact, the longer things take to shake out for Howard - who could still end up being a Los Angeles Laker - the better the chances might be that the Nuggets re-sign Nene.

As far as Afflalo's fate is concerned, we've heard nothing in days. Grantland's Bill Simmons claims it's going to take $50 million over just four years to re-sign Afflalo, a high price to pay for a guy who averages just over 12 points per game. But for whatever reason, Afflalo's name hasn't been mentioned in the latest free agent buzz and, at the end of the day, the Nuggets can match any Afflalo offer (as Afflalo is a restricted free agent). And why are the Pacers - as Simmons suggests - the best bet to overpay for Afflalo? Exactly how does overpaying Afflalo get the Pacers out of their perpetual state of mediocrity? It doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

None of this, of course, helps the Nuggets current situation of having to fill out a training camp roster. Over the weekend the Nuggets took a shot at signing Milwaukee Bucks restricted free agent forward Luc Mbah a Moute, only to have the Bucks match the offer. And NBA.com's David Aldridge is reporting that the Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers could be talking about sending Marreese Speights to Denver. That's hardly a "Plan B" to get excited about. I guess when Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri pledged on numerous radio shows last week that the Nuggets weren't "going to do anything crazy" in free agency, he wasn't kidding.

And nor should they.

Now is not the time to grossly overpay for solid starting players nor hamstring the Nuggets' future just to compete in a squirrely 66-game season. But that doesn't change the fact that the Nuggets' roster remains murky with a regular season tipoff just weeks away.

On to the links...

Houston Rockets offer Marc Gasol four-year, $55 million deal - Sam Amick - SI.com
In this article, Amick reports that the Nuggets have offered Nene a five-year, $60 million contract while the Nets have offered four years, $60 million. But could the Nets' offer be held up pending the fate of Dwight Howard?

Nuggets in Limbo

While the Clippers are about to have a very respectable “big three” of their own. Paul, Gordon and Blake will be fun to watch.

Question: Does the NBA really expect to be able to function in 12 days with so many disjointed teams.?

I think this favors the Thunder, who are one of the only teams coming back intact and ready to play.

That’s what I was thinking. Nene could tire of the Dwight Howard waiting game and come home.

Nuggets should look at Reggie Williams, who’s now unrestricted.

Chauncey is pretty pissed right now

He wants to clear waivers and have a choice on where to play…which I presume is Miami.

I do not think the Nuggets are on his list.

Fernandez from Dallas

I like the idea of getting Fernandez from Dallas (they are giving him away to clear cap space). He would be a great back-up SG if the Nuggets resign AAA. He can score off the bench. Brewer…not so much.

BUt, I still think he can shoot. Remember, he was not happy with the Blazers last year. Their rotations sucked. I think if he finds 25 minutes a game, he will start to shoot again. Regalrdess, he can score and the Nuggets are sorely lacking in that dept for a very low risk player.

Key word is the season hasn't started yet

If it started and we didn’t have a SG or PF then I would be mad too. Patience is key especially when there are tons of GMs out there who will throw max money at Sammy D. Wait out the stupidity so you can get AAA and Nene at lower values. As you can see no one is really courting AAA so I think we can name a reasonable price for him.

Dumb

It’s just such a stupid, outdated mentality. The Nuggets have nothing to lose this year, are short-handed and will need all the extra possessions they can get. If guys can help, then you play them. It’s not really comparable to the NFL where throwing your rookies into the fire does as much harm as it does good. Sitting your rookie players at the end of the bench stunts their development and doesn’t do anyone any good. Real game time is needed.

Alright bear with me (if you don't like profanity don't read below)

Was up til 6 AM for finals and workin on 2 hours of sleep since then so im not the happiest person in Fort Collins right now. Anyways, this shit has got to end. Massai needs to get assertive and get some guys signed. We have a game in 2 weeks and right now have a roster full of a bunch of 21 year old kids and 3 starter plus Fat Al just to keep the cafateria open. This is bull shit. Offer AAA what you think he is worth and ifhe doesn’t sign then wait and sign him when he signs with someone else. Ifhe remains a FA into the season then so be it, his loss. I would also tell Nene you got til midnight to take the Nuggets offer or its off the table and adios. Im tired of reading about Nene’s feelings getting hurt. Fuck that hes a grown ass 7 foot man in line to make a shit ton of money and has already recieved 60 mil from the Nuggets org. Time to man up and say Nene we have paid you a lot of money and are the only team with a standing offer. You got til midnight or we are going a different routue so we can establish a team. If you don;t accept adios. If Nene wants to chance it and lose leverage with the Nuggets pulling their offer then fine let the dumb ass do that. Watch NJ end up with Dwight and some other big contract in a deal not being able to afford Nene and then he has to settle fr a 8 mil per deal somewhere else because he let these “big market teams” play him like a flute and never realized him as a centerpiece on their team in the first place or else he’d already by signed by now. Its just getting fuckin old reading Denver’s names assoiciated with either players i don’t know or players who have been career-long mediocre NBA players that shouldn’t start on any roster. Im also tired about these players and their damn feelings getting hurt. get over it you get paid to play a fucking game, grow up. Im tired of this shit and just want answers to i can not worry about the Nuggets starting fattington at the 4 and Corey Higgons at the 2 on the 26th.

Ujiri is not procrastinating

He is waiting for Nene. Smart GMs don’t make snap moves they wait it out and look at all the possibilities available.
I think the Stone pickup was a good one (better than AC I would assume), signing Bhuah a Moute shows that he is trying to be patient and savy and not jump at signing people just for the sake of it a la Chris Wallace,Isiah Thomas, and Kiki.
I trust he knows what he is doing and I like the media is being kept out of the loop so we don’t hurt players feelings a la Lamar Odom.

I think they are being smart.

You don’t make moves just to make moves. (of course I think I’m spoiled enjoying years of playoffs afters years of junk). They are waiting for the smoke to settle before they go after crap. Thank god you don’t have a GM and Owner that get antsy. Otherwise we would be a perennial lottery team.

by Mancar on Dec 12, 2011 1:44 PM MST up reply actions

im not saying make moves to make moves

im saying speed up the process and start taking control over these players. If they want to fiddle fuck around with what other teams are doing fine, let them but i wouldn’t let other teams dictate what I am going to do that shows I have a weakness. If i am a player i want an aggressive GM going after me. And again I don’t wnat Massai to sign players just to sign players. I want him to figure out Nene rather its an ultimatum or not and figure AAA out. If they still don’t know at this point move on to fll out the roster to make it presentable and competative. If there are no PF or SG that really interest the Nuggets then sign the one you value most for 1 year and start over next year. They wouldn;t really have to do this with AAA but with the PF position, back up SG position and all around 6th man position there are about 3 or 4 holes this team needs to fill by 2 weeks. I would prefer sooner rather than later so they can all get some run with eachother before playing in games.

I agree with you

and would like a deal to get done. However we live in a time where everything other teams do dictate to how your team is shaped. I also would like them to get it done sooner seeing as how the season starts in…I don’t know 2 weeks!!! But this is also a time when teams get a “freebie” by amnestying players and are more easily engaged to trading players. Just cause we aren’t hearing it, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Paul trade is deadand do you know what is very, very weird

Last week, it was the “Hornets” involved in trades and making offers.

Now, in most articles, it is the “NBA” or “Stern” involved in trades and making (or killing) offers.

A league simply should not be in the business of negotiating against its teams. An incredible conflict of interest. The NBA is in such an odd (i.e. bad) place and is really not helping its brand right now. I expect the the NBA (read, Stern) to be at the top of the next stiff list.

by Pusherman on Dec 12, 2011 1:00 PM MST reply actions

Hornets are getting contracted

Thats the only possible explanation for keeping Chris Paul so they can be “fair.”
Does someone know how the Hornets players will be claimed after contraction? Is there anybody on that team we want? Maybe Carl Landry, but it seems we are getting loaded on bigs and need wing help (I am not a fan of Bellinelli, Reggie Williams is a way better fit).

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Dec 12, 2011 1:19 PM MST up reply actions

I highly highly doubt that.

I think Stern is trying to make a statement. Sit your butt for the rest of your contract. Then in the offseason pick between a pay day in NO, a team with cap that’s not in a big market, or go where ever you want but not get paid. That’s my opinion he’s saying you can have cake, but you won’t eat it.

Orlando could sign CP3 and then fip Jameer Nelson for Monte Ellis, someone Dwight has said he wanted in Orlando. GS would do it so they could moce Steph to the 2 and have a true PG running their team. Dwight is happy his team gets 2 players he wants. Chauncey is happy he gets to start for a contender and live in Orlando, a much nicer place IMO than Miami, and no one cares if Jameer or Monte are happy. If Melo were smart

I was thinking about this last night, but if Melo were smart he would have stayed in Denver and waited until this moment right now. Right now the Nuggets could ship Ty, Wilson Chandlers rights and multiple pics to NO for Cp3 and then sign and trade Nene plus picks to the Magic for Dwight. Then they could amnesty Fat Al and would be able to retain AAA. If the team still ended with Kenneth Faried even after they kept Melo the Nuggets roster would look like this:

Paul/Billups
AAA/Forbes
Melo/ who knows
Faried/who knows
Howard/ Birdman

Now that team right there is not only better than the trio of Melo, Amare and Chandler but could easily challenge the Lakers or the Heat. Stupid Melo.

Not Brown - 2008
From Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski to managing director Jerry Colangelo to NBA elders, the issue of James’ immaturity and downright disrespectfulness had become a consuming topic on the march to the Olympics. The course of history could’ve changed dramatically, because there was a real risk that James wouldn’t be brought to Beijing based on fears his monumental talents weren’t worth the daily grind of dealing with him.
After the NBA witnessed the behavior of James and his business manager Maverick Carter during the 2007 All-Star Weekend, the commissioner’s office sent word to USA Basketball the league wouldn’t force James on them for the Olympics. Before Team USA gathered for the 2007 Tournament of the Americas in Las Vegas, an unmistakable message had been delivered to James through Nike: Unless you change, we’re serious about leaving you home.

"Legacies were on the line," one league official said, "and they weren’t going to let LeBron [expletive] it up for everyone in China."

Since nothing is actually happening at the moment...

I’ll go ahead and open up this can of worms: what is everyone’s opinion on Carmelo Anthony now? It’s been like 6 months now since he left, do people still hold it against him? Or just remember the good 7 years he gave to this franchise?

I personally am over feeling bitter for him leaving. At the end of the day, when Melo arrived in Denver the nuggets were In a complete mess. He helped turn us around and set us up for years to come. I like to think of the good times rather then the last season he spent with us and the whole “Melodrama” thing. Does he not have the right to play else where? If a regular person was unhappy working in a particular office or company, don’t they have the right to leave? Melo tried his hardest the majority of the time and I for one will wish him good luck with the Knicks. Wishing him bad, or injury is just stupid.

I laughed at his misfortune.

I’m sorry but maybe I’m the only person around here who thought Melo dragging this city through the shit he did for 9 months and producing exactly zero.

In 9 years, Melo brought us Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov. That’s it. And that’s all I will remember him by.

I mean if you really look at it

Melo brought the Denver Nuggets, like I said above, Danilo Gallinari and Timofey Mozgov and nothing else. None of the other Knicks are still on the team. We don’t have a Finals win or appearance from Melo’s time here (while D-Wade has 2 and a ring, Lebron has 1 and none), and not even a conference championship.

To me, Melo might as well be a ghost in terms of his accomplishments here.

But at least he carried his team there. And I know it was in the weak Eastern Conference, but a Finals appearance is still an accomplishment.
Melo was never able to either totally dominate a series or make his teammates significantly better than they were on their own. That’s why we never went to the Finals.

can't devalue that Finals appearance by LeBron

Especially when our team has never been there…LeBron getting that team to the Finals was like Elway getting the Broncos to the Super Bowl in the 80’s. The Cavs really didn’t follow up getting the right pieces around LeBron until it was too late, kind of like what Orlando hasn’t done to get enough talent around D12 after their Finals appearance.

Never was a huge fan of the Gloved One, but it was more because I was in my Jazz/Blues phase which ended up being followed by my Country phase (of all things). But I came back around to him: still like to play his Bucharest Live video. Certainly his talent was off the charts.

So anyhow I had to check… when I found this video with near 40 million views, figured it must be good…. had never seen it. It is very good, glad I found it. So thnx.

Nuggets have been their own worst when it comes to keeping stars

They traded away Alex English, let Mutombo walk for nothing, traded McDyess away twice, didn’t follow up a WC Finals appearance and add any pieces that could have helped take the next step. Melo could have done more himself for sure but even if he did, not sure if it would have made the Nuggets any better than they have been.

I'm standing tall with Team Ujiri/Kronke

We’ve got essentially two potentially good players to build around and that’s it.

Given that Josh and Masai just took the helm, this is THE time to figure out how to make the Nuggets into a contender to some day win it all. This is not the same forlorn franchise of yesteryear…. we should point for the stars.

While the draft is still a crap shoot, this would be a good year to be shooting. While the cream seems to rise near the top of the draft, with these young kids, especially this year, many won’t blossom until after they’re into their NBA careers.

If we can keep Nene for a reasonable cost, great, otherwise let’s move on.

Chauncy thought...

So it will not happen bc LAC claimed him… but if they hadn’t, couldn’t he have signed for Miami for the absolute minimum… He would not care because NY pays his salary… Giving Miami a 10 mil plus player for 200k? It scared me how jacked up that would have been… Completely unfair.

Am I right that that could have happened?

I'd rather have Earl Clark

Asssuming he is making much less than $7 million.

Still, signing all these filler bigs is not a good sign that Nene will be coming back.

Also, who is going to shoot the ball…let’s go AAA, sign up.

Kwame Browns isn't worth 7 million Yen

While not counting on it, the Nets haven't ruled out the possibly

of getting both Howard and Nene. As for Howard….

Chris Broussard: There r only 4 teams Dwight Howard would sign longterm with – Orl, NJ, LAL, Dal – source says. Rules out a possible DRose-D12 duo in CHI

come on Jersey

only chance to get Nene back in blue.

Formerly KS and CS

Given the changing landscape and settling of time

One has to wonder what teams are still willing to pay? Nets could easily decide while they still like Nene maybe now at only 4yr. @ $50 million. Who knows?

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
