Golden Nuggets: More games to be cancelled, Lawson unhappy

The New York Daily News is reporting that the NBA plans to cancel two more weeks of games and that announcement could come as soon as today (Oct. 25th). We'll take a look after the jump as to what that means for Nuggets Nation. And thanks to reader Nugzin2040 (hope that's not a championship prediction) for the links to Ty Lawson's mess in Lithuania and Kenneth Faried continuing to look good in exhibition games - click here.

Here is a snippet from ESPN about the latest news on cancellations:

According to the Daily News' source, this latest cancellation would total at least 102 games and run through Nov. 28.

The source told the Daily News that the NBA will announce the latest cancellation of games on Tuesday.

Tuesday, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN's Chris Broussard that representatives for the NBA owners and players talked Monday. The sources did not say whether the parties met in person or spoke over the telephone, but said the discussions were lengthy and related to collective bargaining.

What a bummer right? So, that will be over 200 regular season games cancelled as a whole. Great job by David Stern there right? As Jeff Morton pointed out in his interview with Johnny Ballgame last week, this has marked the third lockout by owners under Stern's watch since he took over as commissioner for Larry O'Brien in 1984. That's three lockouts in 27 years, a nice big black-eye for The Commish.

For Nuggets fans, this means an addition seven games will be chopped, for now. Let's take a look at the total games cancelled thus far for Nuggets fans:

First batch of cancelled games (5 games):

Nov. 3rd @ Portland: Always a tough game for the Nuggs, but typically an exciting game.

Nov. 5th vs. Golden State: An exciting young team with a couple high scorers in Monta Ellis and sweet shooting Stephen Curry.

Nov. 7th vs. Cavaliers: The chance for Nuggets fans to see first overall pick Kyrie Irving live at Pepsi Center are gonzo.

Nov. 9th vs. Portland: An early would-be re-match with the Blazers is gone and Raymond Felton's return to Denver is delayed.

Nov. 11th @ L.A. Lakers: Always a fun game in LaLa Land ... as Kobe Bryant gets older, Denver fans have less chances to boo him.

Latest batch of games that could be cancelled as soon as today (7 games):

Nov. 16th vs. New York Knicks: Melo's return to Denver would now have to take place in the NBA Finals ... (always the optimist?)

Nov. 18th @ Oklahoma City: The first chance for Denver to get a little revenge for their 2010 playoff exit is gone and also an important division game.

Nov. 19th vs. Washington: Your chance to see exciting second year player John Wall at the Pepsi Center isn't going to happen.

Nov. 21st @ L.A. Clippers: Another exciting young team with playoff aspirations that features Eric Bledsoe, Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan, and Slam-Dunk champ Blake Griffin ... would have been a good one.

Nov. 22nd vs. Chicago: Derrick Rose's only trip to the Pepsi Center is now gone.

Nov. 25th vs. Dallas: The reigning NBA Champs first visit to Denver is now just a dream.

Nov. 27th vs. New Orleans: Chris Paul and Company wont be playing at the Pepsi Center on this night.

The new season opener:

Nov. 29th vs. Indiana Pacers - let's see if this actually happens.

Instead of an 82 game season for the Nuggets ... they now have 70 games on the schedule. I'm not sure what the rest of the league looks like for those dates, but I'm sure there would have to be some additional cancellations or additions to get a set number of contests for all teams.

Stay tuned ...

I remember reading something about

if 2 weeks are canceled, the Nuggets lose the fewest amount of games (tied with 1 other team) out of the entire NBA. Thought it was interesting.

Indeed, Denver lost 5 games in the first two weeks, I think most teams lost between 6-8 games. So it’ll be interesting to see if they get a season going, just how they’ll make it all play out. Billy Hunter was on with Bill Simmons yesterday talking lockout and was pretty optimistic that there would still be a season, starting in late November or December … can’t recall which.

No, that isn't how a shortened season will play out. Actually...

if the lockout is lifted, the NBA will build a new schedule from scratch, not simply wipe out the first several weeks of the season (according to the NY Times). Those divisional games against Portland and the big money makers, such as the return of Melo to the Pepsi Center, would almost definitely be rescheduled this season.

Great to see a nugget beating up on a Jazz(ian?)

what’s the single form of Jazz. Only wish I could see it in person or on tv, not a highlight from someone’s camcorder off the internet.

I think Ty was more upset when I tweeted at him

That I ate 2 Chipotle burritos in 17 minutes today.

Is it possible for teams to play a different number of total games this season

just based on keeping the old schedule, or would they make adjustments?

by TyLawesome on Oct 25, 2011 11:21 PM MDT reply actions

I’m not sure what they’d do, probably likely they keep the same schedule and try to figure out where to fit in games that have already been cancelled. Or cut out more games to make it like a 70 game season for all teams or 60, 50 …

about Ty...

I was able to see Ty’s match yesterday, in the Euroleague (Europe’s top teams are battling it out for supremacy) against some Spanish team, Unicaja Malaga. The only players that you may know are ex-Nugget Sonny Weems and for the Spaniards, Jorge Garbajosa.
I was eager to see Ty dominate, but boy, was I wrong. He was extremely passive on offense, didn’t take too many shots, didn’t have an assist all game long, but was quite extraordinary on the glass, totaling 9 rebounds. He had 7 points, 9 rebounds and 3 turnovers, but more importantly, he looked really passive out there. By contrast, Sonny Weems had 21 points and 8 rebounds, but he was more confident than Ty.
Ty also had a bad moment in the clutch, when he had 2 free throws to put his team up by 3 with a few seconds to go..but missed one and the other team pulled even on the next possession, thus sending the game into overtime.
I don’t know what to say about Ty, he is becoming my favorite Nugget and I may be a little to harsh on him, because my expectations were really high (considering the competition he was up against), but I think that he is not enjoying playing here. Also, I forgot to say that on D he absolutely got smoked, Malaga playing the pick and roll when he was on the floor.

You have to wonder what guys like Lawson are thinking when they are playing these games. Is he not wanting to be too aggressive because of the system and new teammates (he deferred a lot in his first and second season’s with the Nuggets, expecially when Billups was on the floor with him).

Or is he not being aggressive because he wants to avoid injury and isn’t giving his best effort? He’s on his rookie contract in the NBA and should be getting a nice payday in a few seasons, so why risk too much knowing you have a bucket of gold waiting for you over here? I don’t know … I could be totally wrong.

Thank you for this. I watched Ty’s opening game in against Kiralinko’s Moscow team. (They love that guy over there) Ty didn’t look great but I chalked it up to it being his first game. But after reading that it sounds similar to the previous game. It could be this whole Twitter Fiasco on the day of the game/not having Chipotle of course. I expected him to slice through the defense like he did against NBA guys reguarly. I hope Ty finds his confidence because we all know what he can do when he is aggressive.

He's probably just going at half speed

So he can hit the NBA at full speed.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
