Wade, Billups named NBA Players of the Week - NBA.com
A big thanks to Denver Stiffs reader SDcat09 for alerting us to this yesterday. A job well done by Chauncey Billups and a well deserved award for both he and Dwayne Wade.

Mapping the NBA's Top Scorers: Carmelo Anthony's Points are Worth Less than Kevin Martin's - Tom Ziller, SB Nation
In an interesting analysis, Tom Ziller comes to the conclusion that Carmelo Anthony's points are inefficient and worth less than Kevin Martin's (Thanks for the heads up Nate).

Anthony scores 33 to lead Nuggets to 113-106 home victory over the Rockets - Benjamin Hochman, Denver Post
Game recap from Benjamin Hochman at the Post for those who can't get enough recap.

After the Buzzer: Cracks showing in Kings' foundation - Marc J. Spears, Yahoo Sports
Buried in former Denver Post Nuggets beat writer Marc J. Spears weekend column is a little tidbit that Michael Jordan sent feelers out to Carmelo Anthony through his company (Melo endorses the Jordan brand) to see if he wouldn't mind playing for the Charlotte Bobcats. One question ... how is this not tampering?

Knicks' Danilo Gallinari to Miss 2-3 weeks - New York Times
Of some interest to Nuggets fans, would-be tradee Danilo Gallinari sprains his knee against the Indiana Pacers and will miss 2-3 weeks.

Monta Ellis Trying to Break Warriors All Star Drought - Chris Tomasson, Fanhouse
Our buddy Chris Tomasson from Fanhouse talks about Monta Ellis' quest to be the first Golden State Warrior since Latrell Sprewell in 1997 (!) to make the NBA all star game. He will need to be a coaches pick to get there.

Have a great morning everyone. Go Nuggets!!

great article on Melo efficiency

Melo is a tremondous talent with some inefficiencies.

He has those I’m gonna take over this game moments and, more often than not, he doesn’t.

Here’s to Nene getting 15-20 shots a night

by REAPtheThird on Jan 4, 2011 8:58 AM MST via mobile reply actions

Whoever wrote that article needs to watch games

Like last night, you would have seen the difference between Melo and Kevin Martin or Melo and a Rudy Gay or Danny Granger. Melo can be inefficient but he can still give you 10+ rebounds some decent passing and clutch shots

Sometimes I hate advanced statistics

by devv83 on Jan 4, 2011 10:04 AM MST up reply actions

I think the point is...

I can assure you his presence shows up more than advanced stats, but, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t accurate. Example, Nene is one of the most efficient players in the league but doesn’t really get (or demand) touches. Could be a character issue, but Melo takes away shots from more efficient players. All this proves is that the Nuggets could be better if Melo was getting 6-8 assists per night routinely.

What I’m not saying is that we are a better team with someone like Martin instead of Melo. Melo commands a presence and attention greater than Martin. Teams have to orient and focus on Melo and you can’t stat-e-size that, ya know?

by REAPtheThird on Jan 4, 2011 1:11 PM MST up reply actions

The graph is skewed

to emphasize the difference, making it appear bigger than it should. Also the estimated true shooting percentage for Melo is bad because he shoots better than 75% from the free throw line. It also doesn’t take into account the fact that Melo leads the league in being fouled at the basket with no call being made. This puts his shooting percentage way lower than it should be. Melo figures he’d get those calls if he were in a Knickerbocker uniform.

On the tampering issue with Jordan....

I wonder if Melo feels a little pressure since Jordan is, in essence, his off the court shoe boss? Seems pretty sketchy to me.

I guess if he starts to lose money from his Jordan endorsement

It is definitely sketchy and should be looked further into. If his endorsements stay the same or get better than I think it’s all good.

I don't think he feels any pressure

Its not like if Jordan dropped him no one else would give him a shoe deal

Hello Stiffs

I have been reading this blog for ages but finally decided to comment.

About the Michael Jordan thing: I don’t think anything will come of it. Jordan was accused of tampering in 2007. For what I can’t remember now. Recently five NBA teams accused the miami heat and lebron james for tampering and nothing came of that. Even mark cuban was accused of tampering and that went away too. Maybe they did it but it doesnt matter because its not basketball. its the politics that occur outside of what happens on the floor. That’s what I have been thinking when I see this blog recently. Lots of emotion but pretty much all of it is stuff that cannot be controlled by us internet people. All we can do is watch the games.

anyway, good blog and maybe ill comment some more later.

I think it has more to do with a chance of winning the WS as much if not more than loyalty.

CarGo signed because Tulo signed. Tulo signed because he was dubbed the next face of the franchise the day he was drafted. Jorge signed because he’s had the most success here of anywhere and likes the team.

This team is going to win. That’s why they are all staying. Just like the GenR guys(that and they were in the teams control)

Here's David Aldridge doing some "reporting"

The confusing thing about this article, as it pertains to Melo, is Aldridge mentions this so casually and doesn’t even claim sources told him Melo said that. Weird

is aldridge a prostate doctor now? If anything i would like to have some leaking, i dont know what the guy (melo) is gonna do.

if this guy calls this late breaking news he missed out stating that turoglu had a triple double last night. orlando made a good trade for him.

by Over-and-back on Jan 4, 2011 10:32 AM MST up reply actions

That most interesting part of this article is this:

Aldridge also reports that ‘Melo wants to be a part of "a combo of superstars like Miami put together to play alongside for the next few years." As currently constituted, the Nets would not meet that description and team insiders fear if they gave Denver everything it wants, the Nets wouldn’t have the assets they would to attract other superstar players.

If this is true then this just tells us more that Melo does not want to go to NJ.

Why can't Hochman and Dempsey be like Tomasson?

The 2 former guys always add their speculation into the mix, while Tomasson does straight reporting. Is it hard to just report the facts and leave to opinions to fans like us?
Lopez is on the other end of the spectrum where he fluffs up the Nuggets, and as a homer, I support him.
However, he is just as bad as Hochman and Dempsey but on the other end. At least Tomasson reports like a good reporter should do. He doesn’t make speculations like Melo is getting traded before the season like so many of those idiots said before. Isn’t it slander to say something that isn’t true? How do these guys gets away with it?

Right on JR15

Chris Tomasson is by leaps and bounds one of the best NBA reporters out there. I was worried when the Rocky folded that he’d be out of a job, but he’s gone on to good things at Fanhouse. Tomasson doesn’t report anything until he checks the crap out of it and has either extremely reliable sources or has back up.

There’s too many Chris Sheridan’s out there….we need more Chris Tomassons.

Agree

But it is kind of a shame that the ESPN writers, reading their tea leaves – actually foretold some of the drama and turned out to be mostly right about how it unfolded. Not saying their reporting is all that great, but it gives some credence to them after they got it out first and Melo did indeed want out.

It's because opinion is so tied into their jobs

Think of how hard it would be to report things 24/7 that are so open to being debated. Yes, the best reporters are those that do NOT give their opinions, but in this day and age, it just seems like that’s changed. Everyone reports, and at the same time everyone gives their opinions. It’s just how journalism has evolved with the recent surge of the interactive media world. The more shit like Twitter keeps getting invented, the more outlets there are, it’s eventually going to be impossible for people to just report without having to give their opinions. I respect the ones that don’t though. They are the true reporters, in a world of pseudo ones.

d'oh, link doesn't go to the comment

We’re losing (shock)- quick trade him NOW! Please save us ’Melo….

Short-sited WHINERS. I can’t wait to trade up to a 40 win, 1st round exit team with Melo, while this kid works his craft and has us throwing $100m at him in 7 years. The irony of the "win now" mentality is awesome, player development IS the work. We’re just another team trying to buy our way out of having do the work. Whatever. Happens all the time. What doesn’t happen all the time, is having the opportunity to develop such a great talent. Most teams don’t get that shot. Teams like the Spurs and Lakers have had the LUXERY to develop talent from within. Teams like the Celtics have had to buy their way in. Hell, maybe King should ask Denver for some advice…

I for one will be buying a Favors jersey- wherever he ends up.

“Nobody in the league can guard you one-on-one,” Johnson bellowed from the sideline. “It’s an insult to you if they try.”

Good article

I’m a Favors fan, but even I know this article is highly suspect, incredibly broad generalization of favors right now. They are comparing per minute stats of him to 3 of the best big men ever. Howard and KG were starters who played a lot more minutes and had important roles on their teams from day one. They developed quicker thanks to that experience, and their stats are skewed by having played many more minutes to reach their averages. Favors, while he projects out to be very good, is very often a non factor during the minutes he plays. The point is valid but it’s something to think about. Stats will mean more when Favors earns a meaningful role

Two things sound certain

Are that Melo does not want to play in Jersey and does not want to play in Charlotte.
I still think that keepIng him is the best course of action even if he leaves.
A good test of whether this team is a contender or pretender comes when we have a stretch of games this month when we play good teams. If we can beat SAS, Miami, LAL, and OKC. I say we keep Melo.
If we win a ship or make the finals and Melo still wants to leave, then he is the turkey but I don’t care at that point. If he wins and still wants to leave then it obviously isn’t about winning it all.
As Lando Calrissian said in return of the Jedi “We won’t get another chance at this.” I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t want to wait another quarter of a century before we become relevant again.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

if you don't want to wait to become relevant again then

How can you possibly be alright with letting him walk @ the end of this season and get nothing in return????
This sounds like the sure fire path to stagnation as, sans Melo, we’ll be good enough to stay out of the draft lottery and bad enough to suck donkey balls for years to come.

by InboundingLobPass on Jan 4, 2011 5:23 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

Ok, now is the time when we all wake up from our fantasy

We’re not winning the title this year, I really hate to break it to the Stiff community. Do we have a great team? Yes. Can we make a deep playoff run? If things go our way, sure. But are we going to win the NBA title this year? If you said “yes,” then please proceed to your nearest hospital and go directly to the E.R., because you need your head checked.

The bottom line is that, we’re not going to win the NBA title, and we’re not even close to being good enough. Are you saying that after losing in the first round for 6 of the last 7 years we’re suddenly going to trounce the toughest Western Conference there might have ever been, dismantle the two time defending NBA Champions and then proceed to take down the Miami Heat or Boston Celtics in a 7 game series without home-court? Paaaaleaze. Let’s all take a deep breath in for a second and let this thing we call “reality” come to us.

We’re not going to win the NBA title this year, and even making it back to the WCFs is going to be twice as hard as it was last time we made it. Trading Melo is the most logical, and beneficial thing we can do for this franchise. We’ll get some picks, young assets, and try to build for the future. Without that catalyst to get ahead, we’re screwed and going to look very similar to the Sac-Town Queens within a few years. No thank you.

(Please excuse me if there was any offensive hyperbole in the above paragraph.)

GK was asked about Bird’s need to jump so damn much and he yells to Bird “how many pump fakes did you fall for last night(he said take but meant was fooled by).” to which Bird yells"have to defend the 3 ball, no 3’s" and Karl responds with “at least you have an excuse” and then a sarcastic chuckle. But seriously Bird needs to stay on his feet more.

Interesting in 2011 we could only have 4 players on our roster!

Ty
Billups (Maybe)
Al Chucking-ton
And Bird.

Which means we could realistically start fresh. Re-build around Ty,Favors and the Draft picks we get from NJ . Re-sign AAA and maybe JR. Of course this only works if Melo agrees to go to NJ. Which seems unlikely but you never know.

You are a moron.

Melo’s priority is signing the extension, as he’s stated. If we don’t trade him, he has to stay with us to sign it. Or hea has to accept whatever trade we give him in order to sign him. How do you not see the upper hand here?

by love4nuggets on Jan 4, 2011 8:58 PM MST up reply actions

Malaka, if melo's priority is signing an extension it would have happened with the nuggets..malaka.

so the priority is not “signing an extension.” Its “signing an extension with his preferred team.” The question is who is the preferred team. My great ancestor Socrates once said. “Most things in life are what they appeared to be.” So if he was going to sign an extension with the nets then he would have been traded already in light of the plethora of draft picks nets have and how absolutely desperate they are, begging like homeless gypsies in cold weather.

Been reading around a lot about this year's draft

And from everything I’ve read it looks really deep. I think picks have got to be a top priority when we trade Melo. I mean, if there’s an article that came out today saying Melo has no intention of signing in Denver and wants a super-team similar to Miami, what are we really waiting for again? To me, we should get as many picks as we can and then target moving up if we have to.

I’d love that. But unfortunately he’s shown no desire to remain in Denver and if it was up to him clearly he’s rathr establish his superteam in N.Y. more than anyplace. There’s a differenece between actually wanting to stay somewhere and just get better, and wanting to be somewhere else. If Melo wanted a superteam here he would have had no problem signing the extension by now.

How is it not clear that Melo wants out though?

I think that’s more than clear at this point in time.

I said no one knows what the Nuggets are up to.

I know, but I was just saying in regards to SD asking why Melo doesn't want a superpower here

I said that the front office would have likely been working on it by now, or we would have at least heard something. No, we don’t know exactly what the front office is up to right now, but we have a pretty descent idea: continue to wait on Melo, and in the mean time entertain offers.

Well...If I were a Nuggets front office exec I'd be covering all my bases

just in case. You’d think they would have sent out some feelers to see who’s available just for contingencies.

How awsome would it be if we pulled some Pau Gasol type deal. Not likely but you never know.

Well, you can choose to believe them, or not

But when an overwhelming amount of “sources” are saying he’s not interested in re-signing here, I have a hard time labeling that just a bunch of bull.

"explicit interest," bs

The only thing he’s said explicitly is “Wherever I end up, the first thing that’s going to happen is signing that extension.”

Recycling stories again, heard it all before

maybe it’s true, but it has no more meaning right now then it did before.

Yeah

But the more reports that come out, the more the chances of Melo leaving just increase. It still doesn’t change the fact that we should demand picks over anything in return for Melo. At least, that’s my opinion given the strong draft class this year littered with foreign talent whom scouts are very impressed with, and Ujiri’s background. I don’t want us to turn into the Toronto VelociRaptors but if this class has some real strong foreign talent I’d love for Ujiri to capitalize.

If Melo refused the Nets, and no other team gave us better offers for a rental, then yeah I'd take that.

It looks like more and more NJ is out of the question. Still I believe we can get a better offer from someone. Then what the Knicks have to offer.

Well, we're not just gonna take nothing in return

Gallo and Fields arn’t exactly what I would be hoping for, but they’re pretty descent young guys on rookie contracts, which is always good. If we could get some picks along with it, I would consider it a pretty nice deal.

Good thing is with Gallinari

He’s got a QO, so we can make him a restricted free agent if we want, and as far as I can tell, that’s likely what we’ll do considering he’d be making 5.5 mil in the final year of his contract, which for his services seems like a good deal. He’s still only 22 and has tons of room for improvement, but if you ask me he’s got a bright future.

As for Fields, he’s only making half a mil this year, and .75 next. If he impresses us, there’s a very good chance we’ll try to extend him. If we can then resing AAA and maybe JR, we’d be set for a really long time on guards.

NOW UR TALKING..and dont forget a. randolph..listen the guy plays the same

position as STAT. Thats why hes benchwarming. His averages in 2 years. 18 minutes a game 8.3 points 5.6 rebounds 1.2 blocks. 44 percent FG(sounds like favors). However unlike favors has range to 15-20 feet. 6’11 225, 21 years old? R u sure ud rather have him turn into a pick?

by melototheknicksbecausenets on Jan 4, 2011 11:25 PM MST up reply actions

I don't know, it's a tough call

I love Randolph’s potential (who doesn’t’?) but if he was as good as advertised why can’t he even crack the rotation in NY? I have a hard time thinking he’s going to fit in here with Karl, who can’t stand knuckleheads, if he can’t even do it in N.Y. I guess it would depend on what team the Knicks get the pick from and how it was protected, but I’m not thrilled with Randolph at the moment. If he came our way, I’d be optimistic, and at the price if he ever evolves into a great player we’ll have him for cheap.

It's generally accepted

That’s the deal we get done if Melo starts forcing his way out, or the NJ situation falls apart (he refuses to sign, or they give up and walk away). Although I think it could be expanded to include more salary going out from the Nuggets and more players going to New York (from here or elsewhere). The first round pick (not necessarily from Randolph, but probably) is pretty important. But to answer your question, yes I would do that deal in teh scenario I described

Birdman always had great blocking instincts

He took a lot of people by surprise that year and teams are more aware of him now. Plus, I dunno. He seems to have lost that natural ability. He doesn’t have the same ups yeah I get that – bit his timing is now way off and he almost always jumps way early fro blocks and rebounds. Just hope he gets some of that mojo back cause we need him

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
