Golden Nuggets: Say it ain't so ... Warkentien a Knick

In 2009 Mark Warkentien was named the NBA's Executive of the Year. After the 2009-10 season the Nuggets decided not to extend Wark's contract and let him walk ... right to the New York Knicks. Melo and Wark have been rumored to have a good relationship and the move by New York is a smart one as they continue to court Melo from afar.

Star-divide

Knicks to hire Warkentien as consultant - Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports
A smart move by the Knicks to bring Warkentien into the fold in New York. It's looking like he'll be a consultant for now, and plans for a bigger role in the future.

Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets set for NJ - Mike Mazzeo, ESPN New York
Melo has his sights set on a win against the Nets, and he doesn't know how he'll be received by the crowd.

Carmelo Anthony talks about Brooklyn, the nixed pursuit and the meeting that never happened - Stefan Bondy, NY Daily News.com
A Q&A with the Nuggets star about all the drama surrounding him and his team.

Marc Gasol: "I don't really think about free agency" - Marc Narducci - HoopsHype.com
The younger Gasol brother talks about how he's adjusting to the NBA game and his future in the NBA and with the Memphis Grizzlies.

My proposal for a new and improved NBA - Mark Boyle, Pacers.com
Check out how Boyle thinks the NBA should re-mold the league. Some pretty radical ideas as he proposes only a 16-team league that doesn't include the Nuggets and Lakers.

From the vault:

Denver's Mark Warkentien named NBA Executive of the Year - Official Release, NBA.com, May 3, 2009
Notable feats from Wark mentioned in the article: re-signing Melo, Nene and J.R. Smith, inking free agent Chris Andersen and acquiring Renaldo Balkman.

I just hope it doesn’t cause another paroxsym of Melodrama. It really is all too much. But after last night’s atrocious “performance”, I’m more inclined than ever to just cash him in for the best we can squeeze outta da Knicks.

"acquiring Renaldo Balkman"

Funny to see this listed as a “feat” for Wark as part of his exec of the year criteria back in ’09.

Well Balkman is good

It is just that Karl doesn’t want to play him, that is why his talent is rotting away on the bench. I think Balkman is better than Williams at certain points in the game, but Karl would rather habe an ego trip than win.
Also forgot to mention that Wark drafted Lawson, a very shrewd move. I miss Wark a lot, I thought the guy did a lot of things correctly and Kroenke should have given him more time to get a legit big man.

That article came out before the draft, I believe.

Sweet pun, SD

Who knows what Melo is thinking, but it seemed to me that NJ was offering more TLC than MSG ever could. I hope this is over PDQ.

OK I’ll stop now.

Wark should’ve never been let go and it’s gonna come up and bite Denver in the ass.

Missing Wark

Wow, would it have been nice to have Wark through the Melo Drama. Nuggets missed him through this chaotic period — Wark would have been a steady captain at the wheel. This basically nails the foregone conclusion that Melo will be a Knick. He now has a front office guy he is comfortable with and who can manage Melo’s ego. It’s done guys, and the Nuggs need to decide if they are going to get something from the Knicks(Chandler, Fields, Curry and Randolph) for Melo, JR and Balkman, or get scraps on a rental. Or ride, the season out and hope that the CBA will force Melo to resign (Franchise player tag?).

Somehow I think none of this would have happened had Wark stayed on.

i highly doubt

that the nugs will give the KNicks JR smith. even if we decide not to resign him and trade him somewhere, i just dont see the Nugs FO gift wrapping the Knicks with another amazing (if highly troubled) talent when they are already paying 15 cents on the dollar for Melo.

by nsink on Jan 31, 2011 1:38 PM MST up reply actions

By The Way

Kroenke blew it by not resigning Wark. Granted, the Balkman and Bird signings look a bit suspect, but the man knew his stuff, could have managed the media onslaught better, and had respect around the the League. This is probably the worst time to have a weak FO— star wants to leave, new CBA on horizon, attendance suffering, expiring contracts. Kroenke made a mistake in not resigning Wark, IMO.

The Wark deal is not a huge thing in Melodrama

The big news here is that the Knicks actually hired someone who is competent which is strange for the Knicks.
At least now we know that if Wark is in charge the rumors will be at a min and the deal will happen when you least expect it to happen.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Jan 31, 2011 12:48 PM MST via mobile reply actions

agreed. Hiring Wark has nothing to do with the Melodrama

Melo wanted to go to NY before Wark was let go and will continue to want to play at MSG if Wark was hired or not. It means absolutely nothing when it comes to where Melo lands.

Excellent Simmons article that should scare you about Billups

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/110128&sportCat=nba

Lots of stats and statistics showing that most NBA players crash and burn somewhere between 900 and 1200 career games. A.I. 914 games, crashed season 13. Pippen, 1145 games, crashed season 12. Gary Payton, 1335 games, crashed season 13. J. Kidd, 1231 games, crashed season 14. Billups 13 seasons, 945 games and counting.

Also gives a few current possible exceptions to the rule, though Billups isn’t listed among them. Pretty scary though, Billups is basically on borrowed time to turn into A.I. of two seasons ago or Kidd of the last few seasons.

Why

Are Ray Allen, Steve Nash, and Grant Hill having close to career years then??

by JR15 on Jan 31, 2011 1:26 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

Billups has never had to rely on his athleticism so I think he wont be on the A.I. path and probably a bit more on the Kidd path. Billups, not the fastest guy around, finds creative ways to get to the foul line and has a steady jumper and three-ball … his defense may slip a bit with faster guards (Westbrook, Collison, Holiday), but he has done a nice job using his strength against smaller guards.

I’m not as worried about the tale end of Billups’ career as I am to what may happen to Lawson if he loses his speed over time as Lawson relies heavily on his quickness and leaping ability to be effective.

I agree Kidd is most appropriate

and Kidd fell off quite a lot in his 14th season. Or 1/2 a billups season from now. And there have been signs of it coming from Billups already.

On Lawson, who even knows if he speed and quickness can be ramped up to starters minutes? It’s one thing to be the fastest guy on the court for 24 minutes. What happens when he is needed for 38 minutes? Also, will he turn into Boykins on defense when faced with 30+ minutes of defense against starting PG’s instead of taking on primarily reserves? I love his upside, but his size scares me.

He is kinda short at 5-11, but he's a pretty strong dude

you can’t compare him to Boykins simply because he’s 200lbs of muscle…. boykins is more like 135

by JBnuggs on Jan 31, 2011 2:22 PM MST up reply actions

Lawson is still REALLY young

he’s got at least 6-8 years before we see any sort of decline in his athleticism

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
