Rockets vs. Nuggets recap: Balance wins the day...

It took a while, but a burst of energy in the fourth quarter and a balanced attack by our Nuggets ensured that the Rockets would remain win-less against plus-.500 teams on the road.

Star-divide

Carmelo Anthony is officially back to his old self.  He took an inefficient 25 shots to get 33 points.  Got himself to the free throw line an impressive seven times for 14 attempts.  Pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out five assists.  And his "boy who cries wolf" routine was back in full gear.  If I didn't know Melo better, I'd have thought he tore up his knee, hyper-extended his elbow and got his eyes poked out all in one game tonight.

But alas, Melo - our "Non-Stiff of the Night" to be sure - was the driving force behind a very balanced Nuggets attack.  It's rare when all five starters on an NBA team find themselves in double-digit scoring by game's end, but that's exactly what happened tonight in the Nuggets solid but somewhat concerning 113-106 victory of a road weary Rockets team.  I say somewhat concerning because you'd think the well-rested Nuggets would have pounced on this Rockets team early and often given that the Rockets had to fly in from the Pacific Coast.

The Nuggets did pounce - eventually - but it didn't happen until midway through the fourth quarter thanks to a rally sparked by high-energy reserves Ty Lawson (who else?) and Gary Forbes.  Further proof that the Nuggets have a deep roster to be reckoned with, if you-know-who would just commit to sticking around for a few more seasons.

Frankly, I'm feeling very conflicted with each Nuggets victory (tonight being their fourth straight en route to a respectable 20-13 record on the season).  On the one hand, I love watching our guys play hard, play right and play together.  And that includes Melo.  If ever there was a complete team effort to date this season, tonight's win over Houston was it.

On the other hand, I feel like I'm being teased into getting emotionally invested with a team that ultimately won't look as it does today.  So while I'd love to have visions of a Western Conference Finals appearance dancing in my head when I go to sleep later, such a notion is nothing short of a mirage.

With the way the Nuggets are playing, with or without #15, I believe they'll make the playoffs.  But doing any damage once they get there is unlikely without Carmelo Anthony on board.  So should I enjoy the run while it lasts, or be furious with our star for eventually ruining a would-be great season?  The internal conflict of the Nuggets fan continues.

The View From the Not-So-Cheap-Seats...

...Carmelo Anthony seemingly had it going offensively from the get-go, and I was shocked to see that he missed 15 of his 25 shot attempts when looking at the box score at game's end.  It just didn't feel like he missed that many shots watching the game live.  Regardless, it was good to see Melo regain his shooting touch after a horrendous shooting night against the Kings on Saturday.

...it's always good seeing former Nuggets Elston Turner and T.R. Dunn, now assistant coaches for Rockets head coach Rick Adelman.  But as if we needed another example that the Nuggets are clueless when it comes to in-game presentation, there was no acknowledgment whatsoever of Dunn's (arguably the greatest defensive Nugget ever) return to Denver.  If I were in charge of the in-game presentation, during an early timeout I'd have shown a T.R. Dunn retrospective on the big screen and saluted Dunn for the fans to cheer him.  I'm convinced that whomever runs the Nuggets in-game operations is clueless about Nuggets history.

...Luis Scola is a stud, but seems to have picked up his countryman Manu Ginobili's penchant for acting.  It was hilarious watching Nene barely touch Scola's face near game's end, prompting Scola to recoil violently backward and draw a foul.  It happened right in front of Nuggets head coach George Karl, who knew the call was so preposterous that he could only sit down in shocked protest.

...finally acknowledging some basketball history, the Nuggets trotted out Harlem Globetrotters legend Curly Neal between the first and second quarters.  As further proof that many Nuggets fans are knowledgeable about basketball and therefore deserve more basketball-related entertainment when a Pepsi Center, the crowd gave Neal a huge standing ovation.  The Globetrotters will be playing throughout Colorado beginning on the 7th, playing at Pepsi Center on the 9th.

...Kenyon Martin had a fine outing, but was laboring quite a bit on his surgically repaired left knee.  I wouldn't be surprised if K-Mart sits for the Nuggets game against the Clippers on Wednesday.

...Chris Andersen can't stop anyone and was scored on relentlessly throughout the game.

...interestingly, many of the ads alongside the scorer's table had Chinese lettering, meaning that this game must have been televised in China (the Rockets remain quite popular in China thanks to Yao Ming).

...I love watching Gary Forbes and J.R. Smith play well side-by-side with each other.  I can't help but think of a few months ago when J.R. was in the doghouse and Karl explained it by saying that there weren't enough minutes for both of them.

...the Nuggets dished out 20 assists and are now 4-1 when they have 20 or more assists.

...until he stops assuming foul calls and whining incessantly, Melo will never get any respect from the referees.

NON-STIFF OF THE NIGHT

-Carmelo Anthony: With regard to his many in-game injuries, Melo gave an acting performance worthy of an Oscar...or maybe an Emmy...ok, a Tony.  But despite that, Melo played a great game and it's good to see him back in form.

STIFF OF THE NIGHT

-Kevin Martin: The "other" K-Mart shot an awful 3-15 from the field and had three turnovers, too.  It's never good when your starting two-guard has as many turnovers and field goal completions.

PARTING SHOT

Barely beating the Rockets at home when they're on a back-to-back is nothing to brag about.  But at 20-13, the Nuggets are on the march in the right direction.

Good win tonight. Everybody had a good game. It was very nice to see our original Nuggets back in action. But how bittersweet it is cause we all know this team wont be together for too long. I Know theres still a chance Melo could stay and I wish he does but we all know how little chance that is. It sucks but thats the way the cookie crumbles.

I felt that this game would have been a loss

If we weren’t intact. I mean the rockets hit a bunch of jumpshots, most teams whiff badly when they play in Denver on a b2b.
The way Houston played, they should have won, because I thought they were getting lucky and some help from the refs in the 2nd and early 4th quarter.
Somehow, we pulled out the W. Is it me or when Carmelo drives and get blocked, he gets fouled every other time.
I look at replays and he is getting pummeled by Jordan Hill or Battier each time, but the refs tend to swallow their whistle, and Melo’s FG % suffers for it. I appreciate that Melo goes to the rim instead of bailing out the defense taking jumpshots.

Time to see how we do on the road. I think we can take these next two, this team has transformed with KMart and Bird. Bird may suck on D, but he grabs a bunch of boards and brings an energy that inspires the other guys to play harder.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

Grabbing the defensive rebound

Prevents the other team from getting an offensive rebound.

And I’ve witnessed our team getting abused for offensive rebounds/putbacks/second-chance points often enough that I can appreciate any player than can rebound, even if he sucks on D.

Gosh Andy you're such a Melo hater

Melo did in fact have a good game tonight. He still needs to improve his quickness off the dribble, because I can’t tell you how many times, yet again, he got swatted going to the rim. I don’t mind people getting swatted, but when it’s happening 5,6 times a game, you need to try a different approach. Nevertheless, his aggressiveness can be deadly, and very useful come time to assert our self as the more dominant team. (Take that people who jumped my ass last post-game thread!)

I couldn’t agree more about the internal conflict of the contemporary Nuggets fan. It would make for an interesting piece to delve more into that topic. What I think is being widely under-examined, or discussed, at this point in time is the fact that Melo just turned 26 this past May. The extension we’re offering him is only three years, and would leave him the opportunity to leave as a free agent after just turning 30. Is 30 really too late to continue your quest for a title if you haven’t won one yet? Last I checked 30 is about the age Kobe won a couple of titles, and same goes with Paul Pierce, KG, Duncan, Ray Allen, etc. Point being, I really don’t think it’s too much to ask for Melo to stick around for another 3 years. Our window to compete out West will still be open for another year or two with the current squad, and that’s not even considering possible free agent acquisitions that could help us get younger and better. Melo’s been here for 7 years now and as I recall, we haven’t missed the playoffs in that time. Why would he think, with the roster at hand, that we’re going to suddenly start losing? Please Melo, as much shit as I give you, I still understand how important you are to our success. Just give us one more chance, and if we still haven’t impressed you enough, the you can be free to leave. But right now I, and a lot of other Stiffs out here feel you’ve got some unfinished business, and it would only be right if you gave it one more try to take us to the promise land.

Realistically, I know the chances are not good that Melo stays. But it’s breaking my heart to see such a talented squad be torn apart like this. I mean, age, injuries, contracts, that kind of stuff happens, but having your star player force his way out of town after leading the franchise to it’s most successful stint in history is tough to swallow, especially considering the team is better than it ever has been under his stint. I’ve said many times that I don’t think we can win the title, and I still strongly believe that right now, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that we’re good enough to compete with nearly everyone out West at the moment and that the Knicks are no closer to winning one that we are. The fact remains that with every win this season, Melo’s excuse to leave town looks more and more spurious than anything. We’ll see how this all ends up, but I have a feeling the more forward we go, the more real and exacerbated our “dilemma” will get.

LOL, I agree with the need for a warning.

But let’s address this paragraph by paragraph:

1. It’s not his quickness off the dribble that needs adjusting if he’s getting blocked at the rim. Melo still has the most deadly first step in the league, and I would argue that he was blowing by his man all night tonight. The problem, I think, is his vertical explosiveness. Remember when he first came into the league? He’d get to the rim and rise up and try to dunk it every time! A big part of me is happy he doesn’t do that any more, considering the risk of injury, but he’s getting almost NO lift around the rim. He really has no “above the rim game” any more, and I think that’s part of the reason why he’s getting bullied at the rim. Maybe if he tries to release the ball earlier/quicker? I think at least getting above the rim, even if it’s just a lay-up, would help IMMENSELY.

2. I think it depends on how Melo ages. Look at the extension that Nowitzki got at 32! But I agree, 30 isn’t TOO late, but it’s not like we’re asking the world of Melo. I could understand a little if that were his reason for leaving, but it’s not like he’d accept a shorter extension. .

I agree about his above the rim game. To me it seem that his hops tend to disappear time to time. It is very weird. He also seems to be heavier then last year so that could be a factor.

Ya

The above the rim thing is true. I guess that’s probably what it is. I have said for a long time that Melo’s got to work on his plyometrics in the off-season because he’s slowly regressed when it comes to his athleticism. He’s still a top-notch athlete no doubt about it, but for a guy with his type of repertoire, quickness, leaping ability, and explosiveness would make him completely unstoppable. Instead, he likes to rely on his j, and physical play down low. I mean, when does he ever dunk it with authority. Idk, just seems like although he’s still a premier offensive threat, his arsenal has become a bit redundant and stale. If he could do what Kobe does in the off-season and always work on a different aspect of his game, whew, damn, he’d be nasty.

Melo has never had Dwade, Lebron, freakish athleticsm

Its the reason his game is gonna be the same even when he gets older which is good. He has never really relied on his athleticism to score points. He usually relies on his first step, jumper and his post game.

Melo is a Paul Pierce type player who relies more on skill. So even when Melo hits 30 his game should not decline much. I would rather Melo be playing like Paul Pierce late in his career than Tmac, Vince.

You want to talk about balanced attack?

According to ESPN’s stats, the Nuggets have SEVEN players scoring in double figures so far this year.

SEVEN.

ESPN’s stat page doesn’t keep track of stats before the 2001-2002 season, but NO Nuggets team from there until now has had that many players average in double figures. (Technically, the 2006-2007 team had 7, but that was the year we traded a bunch of players for Iverson mid-way through the season, so it doesn’t actually count)

SEVEN.

Even our WCF year in 2008-2009, we only FIVE. (Six if you count Iverson’s 3 games, which I don’t).

SEVEN.

And you know what’s also amazing? K-Mart, a 13.8 PPG scorer for his career who averaged double figures in PPG in every season but one (and that was 9.5 PPG, very close), has only played FIVE games for us and is only averaging SIX PPG.

Gone are the years of Melo averaging nearly 30 PPG and the rest of the team fighting for scraps. Even Chauncey’s scoring is down from near 20 PPG the last two years to just 16 PPG this season, and the rest of the team has answered by stepping up their scoring.

Melo and Chauncey are averaging a combined:
- 7.7 PPG less
- 4 MPG less
- 5.5 FGA less
than last season.

And you know what that’s resulting in? The SAME EXACT team PPG as last year, 106.5 PPG. That figure is also HIGHER than our WCF year (although the same could be said for last years disaster of a season/postseason, but there were other factors).

Take from these stats what you will, but I’d argue this could be the most balanced offensive output we’ve seen from our Nuggets in nearly a decade.

Nice research

I’d say rather than just a decade, maybe ever? I mean really, when has a Nuggets team ever been this talented? We’ve been to the WCFs twice in our history and we know this team is more talented than the recent one. I guess that just leaves the 85 (?) team, and I’m not that old so I don’t know. One thing is for sure, this team is as talented a Nuggets team as there has been.

That team had Alex English, Fat Lever, Dan Issel, TR Dunn, Calvin Natt and a whole bunch of great role players. I’d say this team is more deep…but that’s an impressive starting five.

You sure?

I always thought they had only made it twice: once in 09 and once in 85. The merger I know was the 76/77 season, so that means they would have made it the second year. I bet I just always heard that 09 was the first time they’d made the confrence finals in however many years, I just probably assumed it was the only other time given the history of our franchise.

lol

Nugs went 33-8 at home that season… and 15-26 on the road.

The more things stay the same, the more they stay the same.

We'd have beat the Lakers in '85 if Kareem

didn’t throw a cheap shot atomic elbow on Alex English when English was securing a rebound, resulting in English breaking his forearm.

I lost all respect for Kareem on that day, and I yell f you at the screen when the Roger Murdoch scene comes on in Airplane.

Denver first.

Kind of. I mean, I still respect Kareem but that’s the exact same reason why my grandpa lost respect for him. Funny you mentioned that.

I remember crying when Kareem did that to English

Alex was my favorite Nuggets player (still is) and that killed the Nuggets chances. The Lakers were quite lucky that season because the Nuggets were running them out of the gym.,

I'm sure you can find a pic on google of a 7 year old in an 80's haircut

that should serve as a good approximation. lol

I think KMart will hit double figures once his minutes go up

That gives us 8 players averaging double figures.

Bird, Balkman, and Forbes can also go off for double digit scoring on a given night. This team is dangerous offensively. We still need to see if we can be a top 15 defensive team. Then I say we are good to go.

good stuff

pretty clear this team is significantly better than the WCF team. we got lucky with the playoff matchups that year, but if we could get home court I could see another run like that. Let’s just hope Melo sticks it out for this season anyway.

There was one game

long ago in which after the game a reporter pointed out to the head coach “All ten of your players that played tonight scored in double figures.” To which Moe replied: “That’s not legal is it?”.

Michael Jordan was a huge actor, usually going down near the end of the first half and into the lockerroom for an early start to the break and coming back in the second half just like nothing happened. Can you say “psyche”?

Also need to give props to Nene

For actually being a force in the 4th quarter and not performing a disappearing act.
Nene gets criticized a lot for being soft, but I thought he played tough today.
I didn’t get the impression that KMart hurt his knee or was laboring. I saw him play some good D in the 4th and he came up with some nice slams as well.
I do think Kmart will rest for that Sacto game, but hopefully Balkman can play in that game.

I agree, I thought Nene was the difference

Scola had no answer for him in the 4th, and he was actually getting the ball and looking to score. It was unbelievable that they were actually repeating a play that was working. He also had a nice steal, that pretty palm spike to K-Mart on the fast break, and some timely rebounds. Nuggs need to run plays to Nene in the 4th – they can’t let him disappear.

play Gary Forbes

by Calvin Gnat on Jan 4, 2011 7:31 AM MST up reply actions

Forbes' athleticism surprises me.

Several times he made a play I thought would end badly. He did get only 5 min though. Not sure how the minutes work though with AAA, Chauncey, Ty JR and Forbes all looking deserving. It looks like right now Forbes is playing backup to Melo.

Let's Go For The NBA Finals

LA is a mess, SA is old, Dallas is hurt. This is the perfect year for a healthy, deep Nuggets team to make the NBA finals. Let’s go for it!!

by ACEIII on Jan 4, 2011 8:02 AM MST via mobile reply actions

Ya

then we lose in the first round again because someone goes down with an injury, and Melo abruptly leaves shortly after. We need him to resign before we start thinking about making deep runs in the playoffs again.

first game ive missed this year...

So, you mean to tell me that Nene actually got the ball in the 4th quarter? It’s a Christmas miracle!

My wife forgot to Tivo the game, but it sounds like we played well and I love that we have a bench that can absorb a 1-8 JR shooting night and still make a difference.

This type of balance, to me, means we can still compete when/if Melo leaves and attract some FO’s in the offseason to rebuild.

by REAPtheThird on Jan 4, 2011 8:33 AM MST via mobile reply actions

Yes he did.

Nene was pretty strong on defense in the 4th. After the game i was listening to 950am and the quote from nene was classic.

“Of course the glory for this win goes to my lord and savior jesus christ. Louis Scola does not have the size and athleticism as me but he does have basketball wisdom.”

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
