Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Point of no return?

I've been catching up and plowing through the first four seasons of How I Met Your Mother and Carmelo Anthony's press conference reminded of the episode "Something Blue" where Marshall and Lily get married. Melo's presser didn't remind me of the TV wedding, but rather the side story in that episode ... Ted and Robin breaking up and keeping it to themselves for the benefit of their friends big day. From the looks of things, I'd say Melo and the Nuggets have broken up.

Star-divide

1.) Florida State beating Oklahoma on Sept. 11th (FSU lost 47-17).
2.) The parking lot at my friend's apartment being a guest lot (Car was towed).
3.) Kit-Kat being a fantastic choice as a Dairy Queen Blizzard (It was disgusting).
4.) Shonn Greene having a breakout season as the running back for the New York Jets (Not looking promising).

The above is a short list of things that I have been wrong about ... some fairly recently (the football game), some extending into the future (Greene), and some in my past (the towing and horrible ice cream). It's important to note these things because I could be wrong about Melo and the Nuggets. I could be reading into a three and a half minute video as something more then it is (I doubt any players really enjoy Media Day too much).

But with all the rumors and blah blah blah, it looked like Melo might not even make it past the weekend as a Denver Nugget, and now we are supposed to believe that everything is hunky-dory down at Pepsi Center? You might be selling it Melo, but I am not buying it.

Whether you've seen the show or not ... the television reference I made to How I Met Your Mother is important to me for a couple of reasons. The first, can you begin to imagine having to attend your best friends wedding while pretending to be the boyfriend/girlfriend of your recent ex? The second, it appears to me that is exactly what Melo is doing now. Sure, he showed up and he didn't make a big deal about however the hell close he was to being traded this weekend ... that was the professional thing to do. But how long can this charade last? I hope not all season.

If you haven't already watched Melo's press conference, please do so now! Here, I'll even give you the link again.

Did you watch it? I hope so, because I want to go over some key quotes and what I read through the lines ...

1.) Paraphrased question: Melo was asked how long he expects to be in a Denver Nuggets uniform.

Melo's answer after he takes a quick look at his uniform, "I'm here today. Whatever the future holds ... it holds."

What I think: It would be nice if players were allowed to say what was on their mind, but since they really can't do that (since everyone picks apart what they say ... me included) they give us canned phrased responses. But the kicker here is that Melo truly holds the cards. If he wants to be a Nugget, he can be a Nugget for a long time and would only need to say that to the media and he could likely get whatever contract he wants from Denver. I wish he could tell us what he wants, but we do not get the privilege of being a fly on the wall where that conversation takes place.

2.) Melo elaborates a bit on his future by saying he wont get into what he and Masai Ujiri discussed, but he does say the following ...

Melo, "It was a good conversation, actually it was a great conversation." And adds, "I'm here today, practice starts tomorrow. We go from there."

What I think: I think if they had a great conversation then perhaps they talked about something other than basketball. I'm sure talking about how they were in discussions over the weekend to send him out of town wasn't really the best of topics ... well maybe for Melo it was. All kidding aside, again I would have loved to have been in the room during their talk. I'd love to hear what Ujiri thinks the future holds with the Nuggets and how they want Melo to be a part of that and what will be done to keep him happy if he stays.

3.) Melo talks about his summer ...

Melo, "It's been a long summer for me. With all the speculation and rumors and the good things I've had going on. So, I'm just excited to get back on the court tomorrow."

What I think: Again, Melo could have come out at any point in time and put the speculation and rumors to bed by inking the extension with the Nuggets. But again, he needs to see that the team is committed to building a contender so he has to let the speculation and rumor mill buzz because he needs to put pressure on the Nuggets to do right by him and his career. Melo is a star and can carry a team to a certain extent, but the organization needs to show they are committed as well. Kenyon Martin's contract is sitting around with the end in sight, same with Chauncey Billups, J.R. Smith, and George Karl. If I were in Melo's shoes I'd be a bit worried about what kind of future the Nuggets are planning as well. Are the Kroenke Boys going to do all they can to bring Denver a championship?

4.) Melo is asked why he wants to be traded.

Melo, "I never said I wanted to be traded. I never said that. I never once said that."

Melo is then asked why all the trade rumors then.

Melo, "You gotta ask the front office that."

Melo is then asked if he's saying he doesn't want to be traded.

Melo, small smile and leans back in his chair in sort of a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't situation, "I never once said anything about trade talk."

What I think: Part of the business that we may never know about unless somebody writes a tell-all book. What came first ... the chicken or the egg? You want some cake ... and you want to eat it too?

Melo said mostly the right things in his press conference, but he didn't really say anything that put him on one side of the fence or the other either. There has to be some awkward feelings about this summer and maybe before that. The listening to trade offers from the past weekend seemed pretty awkward as well. How close were the Nuggets to making a deal? Did Melo know how close they were? Who held up the trade ... was it Melo not agreeing to an extension ... was it the Nuggets getting cold feet about the players in the deal ... was it the Nuggets hoping Melo showing up in Denver today would help change his mind?

We still don't have any answers. Melo said he's 100% committed to the Nuggets right now ... well he actually said, "I gotta be committed 100%."

I have a funny feeling that Melo and the Nuggets have broken up, but they just can't tell anybody yet. But I've been wrong before ...

NAte I think you should check out the recent FanHouse article regarding Melo

My point is, (and you alluded to this) Melo is afraid to commit to a team with such an uncertain future. Would u want to be a top 5 player and risk playing your prime on a team without a plan for the future…

I think all Melo needs to re-sign is to be given a sign by the FO that they will commit to winning (like how NO got Ariza and did a few other trades)

trust me, this has been way over blown by the media and I can honestly say… I still think Carmelo ends up staying… he just doesn’t want close all his options when he knows this deal will always be there

But he clearly said

no extension with Denver until seasons end. That is a huge huge risk for the Nuggets to take. I personally think those whole thing was a sham by both Melo and the Nuggets. They say what people want to hear and we’re still stuck in the same position as before.

Unfortunately Melo is not top 5

Lebron, Wade, Durant, Paul, Howard agreed on by just about everyone as better. Melo comes in the second conversation, Gasol, Kobe, Rose, Deron Williams, and Bosh with several others who might leapfrog them with a good year. If Melo has a good year with shooting percentage, is motivated and plays a little D he can be considered top 10.

As such I just want the Nuggets to get as much as possible for him but not try and overplay their cards before some other teams realize (NJ) that he isn’t worth mortgaging the future for.

I hope Josh K is smart enough to realize that.

Reality

I think you are talking fantasy not reality, cause Kobe is number 1 or number 2 and i hate the guy, but hes that good.

by nsink on Oct 1, 2010 9:47 AM MDT up reply actions

top 5???

He’s not even top 10. He does not make anyone on this team better. He needs leadership from other area’s.

However, you are right in going to another team. He has it much better here. If new management can pull of getting a big man at the trade deadline, perhaps the 2 will fall back in love again.

Any extended losing streak, and the playoffs not likely at the trading deadline, and he is off to NY.

Finally, someone in the MSM gets it.

He warrants special treatment, but he hasn’t produced commensurate results.

That sticks out.

I can't blame him

If my company had as many questions as the Nuggets do, and they wanted me to commit the next quarter of my career in my prime years to them, I wouldn’t rush into a decision, either. He’s got all year, and hopefully he’ll decide Denver is the place he wants to stay…but maybe he’s just not sure. I can’t get mad at him for that. I still think there’s a good possibility he re-signs, but I won’t be shocked either way.

lol everybody seems pissed off in the photos ive seen!

Not a good sign. Ill bet the talk went like this, “Listen guys I would only be ok with a trade to NY now,”
“Well Melo they don’t have the pieces to trade with…”
“Well then ill go after this season is up.”

I think you're guess is about the closest to reality.

I also think Melo will be a Knick before this whole thing is over. Maybe that won’t be until next year, but he will be a Knick.

screw him and the knicks

i hope the FO NEVER backs down to his demand and trades him to the knicks. he (along with lala and wes the douche) wants their god damn cake and eat it as well. he wants the knicks along with that extension? tough. you’re only going to get it with way less money. i know it’ll mean nothing to them money-wise, but their egos need a serious wack. let them lose money, and then let the knicks get humiliated by miami and orlando.

by YaSrsly on Sep 27, 2010 10:15 PM MDT up reply actions

well it better be some damned good talent. and it can’t come from the knicks either, because they have neither real talent, nor do they have picks for that matter.

by YaSrsly on Sep 27, 2010 10:25 PM MDT up reply actions

if there are teams with great young talent out there, then i doubt they would want to give that up to get gallo, randolph and curry, because that’s more than likely who’d they end up getting in a 3-way deal, and their young talent is more likely to be far superior to that of gallo and randolph.

besides, i like the idea of essentially telling wes wesley to fuck off. and yes, i realize i’m starting to sound like adrian wojnarowski.

FINALLY!!

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5622392

I don’t know how it took so long, or why it wasn’t commented on earlier, but finally a news source has pointed out that Kroenke would not take on $10M in additional payroll to take back AK. It was so obvious to several of us who have been beating that drum since Friday, but 4 days later a reporter finally pointed it out. Its simple math, use it before you go reporting to the world that a trade is almost done.

AK is not coming to Denver, that deal was never real or close to being signed off on.

by nugs4life on Sep 28, 2010 7:34 AM MDT up reply actions

I must point out a couple things

This press conference was going to be uncomfortable. When it’s played out in front of us, we act like this is THE sign Melo isn’t staying. Come on, we all knew this was going to happen. Did we expect Melo to sit up there and cheer like he’s a 13 year old cheerleader? Everyone here would have cried “HES FAKING IT!” if that happened.

I would love it if everyone would calm down. Melo’s situation is far more complicated than a contract extension and a trade. We need to let this play out because there are many twists and turns to come.

Meanwhile….it’s time to play some effing basketball!

I didn't expect a 13 year-old cheerleader

But this was like watching one of the pod-people from Invasion of the Body Snatchers – emotionless & completely disengaged. I hope Melo’s not planning on a post-basketball acting career w/LaLa, because if this peformance was any indication, he doesn’t have the chops.

by CraftyB on Sep 28, 2010 10:13 AM MDT up reply actions

Great take, great points

I think you nailed this article. Something that I thought about while watching this uncomfortable press conference was the fact that Melo said that he would wait until after the season to figure out his future. I think everyone in the room including Melo know that isn’t true. The Nuggets have already stated a few times that they refuse to be LeBroned and will trade Melo before that happens. Melo knows this as well, which I think eludes to the real problems that are at work here. Melo either will sign the extension, sign the extension and be traded, or just be traded, but one thing that will most certainly NOT happen, is the Nuggets waiting until after the season to talk about Melo’s future. So looking at it from that point, somethings going give here in the next few months. Personally, I hope that our FO can pull down a trade a la the Lakers a few years back that gets Melo to commit to the team, but we will have to see if they can get it done. If not, then we all know what is gonna happen. Adios senior Melo….

Melo wiil not finish year in Denver.

If you guys actually think that Melo is staying in Denver, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. He is coming to the East and there is nothing anyone can do about it. His wife told him where she wants to live and thats that. I dont care what tweets or articles you read in ESPN or on Yahoo. End of story.

Now as your team goes, you guys HAVE to trade him before the season ends or else you are going to be just ike Cleveland, losing Lebron.

So instead of fooling yourselves and thinking maybe he will sign the extension and stay in Denver, shout to your so-called mgt. and tell them to trade him before its too late. He is going to the Nets or the Knicks so get the most you can for him.

Where are you going? What are you going to sell Melo on if Amare blows out his legs again? Same for CP3. Is Melo still going to go to a team who cant stay healthy and can’t compete with Miami, Orlando, Boston, Chicago? If he is going to go to a team full of injuries, he is already on one. Keep thinking he will go to NY though. Just like everybody in NY knew Lebron was going there too.

Looks like my original idea of trading Melo before Christmas is still alive.

Everyone just needs to sit tight for the first 6 weeks of the season.

There will be plenty of offers at that point, with all the FA signings available to be traded.

My last proposal was a modification of Andrew’s proposal:
Just substitute the Nets 2013 1st round pick for Terrence Williams:

Favors+Harris + THREE 1st round picks for Melo+Lawson.

If Lawson was so good, then why did he play only 19 MPG last season and only 5+ assist per 40 minutes? Lawson is a great backup, but unproven as a future premiere NBA starter. Harris will probably be a top 8 NBA starter again and for the next 5 years. Nets and King badly want to keep Harris, but had no other options but to include him. It is Prokhorov, not Avery or King who want Melo badly.

by jerry25 on Sep 28, 2010 7:15 AM MDT reply actions

Strike while the iron is hot

I’m speculating but Melo may not be so warm to joining the nets when more trade possibilities open up after Dec 15th. I think he goes to NJ if we hammer out a deal before the season for Favors and picks.

Harris doesn’t have to be part of the deal for us. Hence the search for a third and fourth team to complete a deal

Harris or Troy Murphy HAVE to be part of deal before Dec. 15.

There is no other way to move enough salary, even if Kris Humphries (3.2 million) and Jarvis Hayes (2.7 million) were included.

And if Nets trade Murphy’s expiring $12 million contract with Favors, then Nets would have a huge gap at PF once again, unless a decent PF was returned as part of the deal.

And don’t forget, if Favors looks better than expected, at start of season, Nuggets will be on hands and knees begging for Favors after Dec. 15. You will have to take Outlaw, who by Dec. 15 will be a proven SF starter.

And in that scenario Melo would be MORE likely to want to join Nets, with Lopez, Harris, Murphy and TWill as teammates.
That is a nice starting 5.

bad breakup

Great article Nate.

To add on. Why do so many Denver fans have ex-girlfriend syndrome. When you dated a girl she was everything, and when you broke up she wasn’t **** (ie Melo, Cutler and Marshall). As soon as Melo thinks about another team the bashing begins. The down grading begins. Let’s enjoy the past. Melo is talented. He put Denver back on the map. The team has fell short of its goals, but that burden doesn’t fall completely on Carmelo’s shoulders.
Let’s not blame a guy for keeping his options open. Denver has so many questions to be answered. Forget about trading for a big man. We haven’t addressed that in years. The biggest question to me is, who is our COACH next year? Listening to George talk, I bet he would commit to a 3 year extension. Great coach’s are hard to find. Let’s keep ours. Denver, get some type of stability.
Plus, we are kind of lucky to know he has thoughts of leaving. If he kept his mouth shut and played through the season and left, we would get nothing. Seems like the front office heard whispers, put the extension on the table to test his true feelings, and now we hold it over him that he hasn’t signed.
Let’s not hurry and look for that rebound girl (AK47). May keep you busy for a while but is not good long term. Let’s be patient and see if we can work this out.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Is this really Bret Bearup’s team now?

Bearup appeared the same time as WRex and became the hide behind the curtain member of the 3-headed FO that so confused the rest of the NBA with their misdirection… with a little Karl thrown in for good measure when they needed a 4-headed set.

WRex is gone, Bearup is still doing a Stan by staying behind the scenes and not engaging with the public and the misdirection continues

It’s all throwing mud against a wall and seeing what sticks, but what is being thrown is consistent and this little tidbit from one of the chief mud-slingers tells an interesting tale:

“That goes a long way in explaining Denver’s hesitancy regarding the trade. Several league sources told Broussard that Bret Bearup, a longtime consultant to Kroenke and his son Josh, has wanted to trade Anthony for quite some time, but the money aspect of this deal has kept even him from signing off on the move.”

This is why

Melo wants to leave. Ujiri is front office in title only, he’s more like the team spokesperson. Who knows what decision making power Josh acutally has – he’s probably calling daddy every 5 mintes. Karl is the only one who has proven he knows anything about basketball, where does his opinion come in? Bearup is indeed “the man behind the curtain,” but without an official title, what is he exactly? My guess is that Stan K. and Bearup are still running this organization, but that all communication goes through Ujiri….what a freakin’ mess! The last front office with Rex and Wark was a laughingstock in the NBA, and now they have figured out a way to make it worse! If I was Melo, I would go to a 12 win team with solid leadership and direction in a second! Just imagine if the leadership at the company you worked for was this disorganized…you’d be sending out resumes like crazy!

by haustyle on Sep 28, 2010 10:53 AM MDT up reply actions

If that is Melo's reasoning then why would he go to NYK?

I think you make a valid point haustyle, but the owner of the Knicks is the most disorganized owner of them all. There is a reason the Yankees denied ownership to James Dolan. Even with a manager like Donnie Welsh, Dolan still wants to bring in Isiah Thomas to be a consulatant for the team.
However, I do think NJ has a lot more stability than NYK, and if Melo cares about FO stability so much then he should go to NJ over NYK.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

James Dolan is so far up his own ass, it’s unbelievable. As a musician, I know about wanting to get paid, but I would bitchslap myself for backing up that no talent ass clown. He’s the rich kid who was never told ‘no’. His poor taste and delusions of grandeur are indicative of greater issues with his decision making abilities.

I agree completely

I heard about his “band” a while back, that’s when I actually started pitying him (as much as you can for a guy that rich anyways). He just seems like an outcast rich kid who wants to be cool but is too much of an idiot to do so. As if the whole Isiah Thomas incident(s) wasn’t enough proof. The only reason people even associate with him is because of his wallet.

the last FO was far from a laughingstock

considering Wark won exec of the year in 2008. But you are correct that it is now.

okay, talk me off the ledge here

My first impulse is to get really pissed off about that. Are the Nuggets going to find any better deal, long-term, than this currently proposed 4-team trade? Kroenke doesn’t want to spend an extra $9.6M for just this one season , so he’s going to nix the deal?

Shouldn’t he just bite the bullet on that $9.6M for this one season, and then the Nuggets will be in a great position for the next couple of years? It seems to me like no better deal than this is going to come along. Would the Kroenkes really be happier to save that money this season and then have Melo walk as a free agent next summer and get nothing in return and be in horrible shape?

Somebody tell me that I’m failing to consider some important point or another. Right at the moment it feels like the same thing as selling that 2nd round pick last year that should’ve brought DeJuan Blair to the Nuggets. I.e., the Kroenkes are saying “If the Nuggets’ lot is to be improved, it’s not going to be because we spent any money.”

*sigh*

Nothing else to say that hasn’t already been said.

So I’ll just express the general sentiment around here.

I don't think melo knows what he wants

Except not extend with Denver. Nets set a deadline for tomorrow. If melo wanted to be a Net he would already be there though. Doesn’t look like we will see a resolution anytime soon.

I'll bet Melo wants the Knicks... period. And the Nugs FO is delusional

Wouldn't it be nice

If Melo signed the extension and everyone could move on with optimism.

If only life (and the NBA) were that simple.

F**k LT!

That dude might have single handedly ruined my fantasy season. I put tons of stock into Greene only for LT to come along and suddenly find the freakin fountain of youth! Come on Greene, see if you can find that little speck of Tanya Harding that’s hiding out in each of us.

Great read by the way Nate, love the analogy.

Just a ploy to keep their team from unraveling

They can’t go through too much of training camp hanging their players out in the wind. This deal pretty much fell apart because of the money problem taking on AK47. Bearup and Stan kroenke said no even if all GMs agreed to it.

If Melo stands in the way of a trade by not signing an extension --

agreeing to play for who we want to trade him to so that he can play with the Knicks, I think Melo should play 48 minutes every game at Center. No reason to kiss his ass anymore.

And, I am resigning my position on the QPU. I’d like to be mature about Melo and his right to do what’s best him and his family, but Denver first. Anyone who doesn’t want to be here for max money can “just because” can kiss my ass.

Denver first.

Not personal

You guys take things way too personal. I hope you guys get all the talent in the world for Carmelo. I just stressed the obvious that he is not going to be a nugget past this year and it would be extremely foolish not to trade him to a team he wants to go to instead of getting squat when he is A free agent.

Unlike you guys, I know my owner is an idiot and makes the worst decisions in the league. Let’s see how smart your front office is when they lose your beat player for nothing at the end of the year. That’s smart.

Go Knicks

by rod thorn on Sep 28, 2010 4:20 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

don't take us too personal

We’re all pretty jaded to the whole thing over here, and your less-than-groundbreaking analysis is not going to be received with much more than a sarcastic golf clap at this point, it seems.

I don’t think anybody is very high on our FO right now, but knowing that the Knicks owner is an idiot is not exactly going to win you much cred either.

Right now it’s like walking into a funeral and being like “you guys should have amputated that lung before the cancer killed that guy. Real smart! jeez, you guys are so sensitive. Well, at least I KNOW the cancer in my lungs is going to kill me, unlike that guy… GO KNICKS!”

the analogy isn’t perfect, but you get the idea.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
