Nate's Top 8: Basketball Movies

I got into a bit of a quote marathon today using the movie A Few Good Men, it made me want to run home and watch it. The only problem ... I don't own it. So, I decided to hop on Netflix and see what old school movie could replace it. Once I got to thinking about older movies, I started thinking about basketball movies and what my favorites are ... the following are my Top 8 favorite basketball movies.

Star-divide

Quick note: Can we get a good movie about an NBA team or NBA player please!?!?

For any of you that haven't seen many of my movie references, you need to know that I typically like pretty awful movies. Well, it's not that I just like awful movies ... it's more so that I've seen a lot of movies and for some reason I can easily remember them and think of how they may apply to the junk I tend to type.

The best part of lists like the following one is that they are obviously totally subjective, can be argued, made fun of, and laughed at. And with that, let's get to it ...

I chose just eight movies because I'd like to be able to add one or two as time goes on and I'll continue to hope that somebody will tackle the story of an NBA player in a unique way.

8.) Basketball Diaries - 1995

The basis: Basketball serves as a backdrop to the lives of a group of high school friends who experiment with drugs and alcohol until their lives spiral out of control. Main character Jim Carroll loses it all and through the help of a friend finally kicks drugs, but his once promising basketball dreams are long gone.

Reason I like it: The one guy who stayed the course, Neutron, goes on to have an All-American career, while his friends all screwed their lives up. You can't turn down a movie that has a good life saving turnaround (Carroll). I remember my sister watching this movie and thinking I was cool seeing it as a 14 year-old.

7.) Love & Basketball - 2000

The basis: Hey a romantic drama centering around basketball ... blah for most, but I like this crap. We get to follow sports movie star Omar Epps and his childhood girlfriend through their up-and-down careers balancing basketball and life.

Reason I like it: Games of the heart boys and girls, the fun you can have when the heart strings are pulled. Epps won me over early in his career with The Program so I'll follow him into any movie (Juice and Higher Learning). Plus this was one of the rare basketball movies that shows a little pro-ball in it as well.

6.) Semi-Pro - 2008

The basis: Funny man Will Ferrell aka Jackie Moon attempts to get his ABA team into the NBA merger that is looming. Stunts, antics, and some hilarity ensue.

Reason I like it: I didn't see it until I bought it and I HATED IT. I caught it on cable a couple times recently and now I'm upset I no longer own the thing. Movie cracked me up even though Ferrell is forced to carry most of it. Perhaps after reading the ABA book Loose Balls I was able to appreciate the movie more or maybe, like any Ferrell movie, it just gets better with each viewing.

5.) Sunset Park - 1996

The basis: Inner city team faces an uphill climb on their way to a successful season.

Reason I like it: After this one many more were made like it (think Coach Carter). There is a little Hoosiers in Sunset Park, but I recognize this kind of basketball much more as the movie is waaaaay more modern. The classic up-and-down theme is played out well in this little known flick.

4.) Above the Rim - 1994

The basis: Talented high-schooler let's his game get to his head and falls into the wrong crowd ... can he save himself and his career before it's too late?

Reason I like it: Tupac Shakur does what he does best ... plays the role of a ruthless gangster (like an older version of his character Bishop from Juice) and attempts to corrupt a kid for his own benefit. The basketball in the film towards the end is fairly unrealistic, but still pretty good as predictably the good guys go on a roll.

3.) He Got Game - 1998

The basis: Every college in America wants Jesus Shuttlesworth and everyone around him is in his ear. Ray Allen aka Jesus must figure out all the bullshit and do what is best for him. (Sounds familiar eh Melo?) Probably a pretty decent look at what highly sought after high school kids must go through.

Reason I like it: It was funny seeing Ray Allen try to act, I love Rosario Dawson, and Denzel Washington plays a good beat-down father figure who is too late to the party. Tons of cameos and an ending that will leave you scratching your head. It's also been fun referring to Allen as Jesus these past 12 years ... man I can't believe this movie is so old!

2.) White Men Can't Jump - 1992

The basis: Streetball hustlers running the courts in California try to figure out the ultimate hustle as one guy plays to move his family into a nice place and the other guy is just a screw up ... both share a love for the game.

Reason I like it: The movie holds up from a story standpoint, but the fashion is pretty bad. Also, I'm not sure how Billy Hoyle plays in his oversized Reebox Pumps. My favorite line comes after Hoyle does a good amount of trash talking at a two-on-two tournament from a player he'll face in the finals, "Tell Aunt Bee if she don't have my bean pies I'm gonna kick her ass." This gets me rolling every time ... who says that? The ultimate part in the end is Billy unknowingly choosing basketball over his girlfriend Gloria as Gloria, like many women in sports flicks, doesn't understand her man's love of the game. How can you not like a movie where a couple guys team up to follow their hoop dreams?

1.) Blue Chips - 1994

The basis: Coach Pete Bell has always been known for being honest and running a clean program as the world around him continues to become corrupted by the greed of winning. Bell, after enduring a tough losing season, has a shot to get back on top with some new recruits, but they wont come cheap (will he sell his soul?).

Reason I like it: When I was younger I was thrilled to see Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and Shaquille O'Neal in a movie, but after watching it tonight I realize again that Nick Nolte carries the show. Nolte is basically a Bobby Knight clone, but for some reason I like his performance and feel that I can relate to his struggle about wanting to win. Ultimately Nolte experiences the price of winning in the "new world" and it disgusts him, he's now a dinosaur and his kind are extinct.

That's my list, I left a few major players off, but that's why it's my list. Feel free to share yours ...

No it was a movie about how Common made the Nets, even though he is

a 6’2" R&B singer/rapper/existentialist. That’s how bad the Nets really are.

I love Omar Epps, but primarily from ‘The Wood’ , Love and BBall was good though. I really can’t follow him to House…kinda sad really, it’s not his bag baby! I agree about semi-pro at first blush it sucked but I watched it recently and was ROFL at the bear fighting scene. Plus the Nuggets win..they beat the Tropics to the NBA

Why would being a documentary exclude it from this list?

Not trying to nitpick – It’s your list and you can do as you please – but just because something is a documentary doesn’t mean it’s not a movie. Hoop Dreams is both. It was released in theaters & nominated for Oscars – it doesn’t get much more “movie” than that.

Now if you’d said Nate’s Top 8 Fictional Movies, you’d be solid. Just my two cents.

by CraftyB on Sep 2, 2010 2:59 PM MDT up reply actions

I like where your head is at here and if I did include it then it would be #1 for sure. I’ve just always thought of movies and documentaries as different I guess … even if they get nominated for the same awards. I’m a weird guy … I like applesauce on pizza. Chew on that one …

keeping us sane again Nate

but…..no Hoosiers? Funny thing, while Dennis Hoppers performance as the alcoholic assistant basketball coach was great….and he was nominated for an Oscar for it….he was basically nominated for this movie when the Academy REALLY wanted to nominate him for Blue Velvet. They decided the Lynch movie was too esoteric and weird to be nominated for an award.

It happens

I love Hoosiers, but I know how something can be built up to the point that it can’t help but disappoint when you finally see what all the fuss is about.

Frankly, compared to baseball & football (or even hockey, for that matter), there aren’t many great (or even good) basketball flicks. I think part of the problem is that, unlike the aforementioned sports, the action in basketball is extremely difficult to fake with actors who aren’t gifted athletically, and if the basketball looks fake, everything else falls apart.

by CraftyB on Sep 2, 2010 3:02 PM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Dated?

Hoosiers came out in 1986, and took place in 1954 (I thnik). It was a period piece. I can see White Men Can’t Jump and Blue Chips as being dated, but come on, Hoosiers? That’s like saying “By the time I saw Titanic I just felt like that time of my life had passed.” But if you got to miss Titanic you should consider yourself lucky. That movie sucked.

by MattressKing on Sep 3, 2010 11:33 AM MDT up reply actions

Good call there … so ya 1986 will have to be too dated for me! hahahaha!

Um, I saw Titanic in the theatres ….TWICE! HAHAHA! Had to go with my mom and sisters over a holiday (family time) and then I took a girl out for a date and she picked that one. Since I had already seen it I spent most of the movie trying to figure out how to hold her hand … I was 15 years old and awkward!

I’ll accept that you don’t love Hoosiers, even if I don’t understand it, and while Glory Road isn’t original in any way, it’s nearly as bad as you say. but I’m curious about Hoop Dreams. If you include it, where does it rank for you? For me, it’s got to be the best of all-time.

And you want the truth? YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH! And it’s that Blue Chips sucked. A 38% tomatometer rating doesn’t lie.

Feinstein agrees with you about Blue Chips. I loved that movie and still like it! I watched it as I wrote this article.

Hoop Dreams gets #1 if it’s included. Just a great film and really the first thing I really remember seeing like it. I actually didn’t know it was a documentary until I watched it … thought it was going to be a real film. I hate watching previews and try to avoid them at all costs. Memorable basketball movies

Hoop Dreams – When this movie got snubbed for a best picture nomination at the Academy Awards 15 yeas ago, it was a travesty of epic proportions. Even David Letterman who hosted the awards brought it up on numerous occasions throughout the ceremony

Celtic Pride – Dan Akroyd and Damon Wayans, need I say more?

Hoosiers – Great story and timeless classic.

Glory Road – Don Haskins was one of the great coaches in college basketball history.

I could have

been an extra in that movie but I didn’t and I don’t remember why. Must have had something to do with not wanting to spend the time on it. Former Bronco Bobby Anderson was in that one too.

Sappy love story, yeah, but even worse was Anette O’Toole was nothing to get excited about.

"Woohoo Denver, Yeah... All right Denver justify my love!" ...Homer Simpson
"Denver isn't considered a frontier maam, not these days"... Josh Randall (Steve McQueen) in an episode of Wanted Dead or Alive set in 1871, filmed in 1958.

I got that on my Netflix que too

According to Kareem, best basketball player he ever saw. Dude was 6 ft and could swipe a quarter off the top of a backboard. That’s the one with Don Cheadle isn’t it?

why does nate hate the state of indiana?

hoop dreams is my personal favorite because i know people in the movie. st. joseph assistant basketball coach dennis doyle went to school with my older brother. he had 3 younger brothers and we were always fighting it out in pick up games over the years. my 1st cousin’s son chris reid is in the movie. he played for st. joseph’s along with william gates. he is shown in the part where the players are running winds sprints. coach pingatore is yelling at the players afterwards. pingatore yells to my cousin, “WHY SHOULD YOU BE ON THE TEAM REID” i think it was because his father lived in westchester, illinois and paid full tuition. chris reid turned out to be a great human being and graduated from illinois wesleyan. same school as jack sikma. there was a follow up read to hoop dreams. william gates’ brother and authur agee’s father were both killed as a result of gang violence. william gates has a christian ministry. dennis doyle retired and coach pingatore was still coaching basketball at st. joe’s.

He Got Game to me is #1, but I havn't seen Hoop Dreams

Hoosiers is stupid overrated in terms of sports movies to me. It’s too cliche and Gene Hackman is annoying (too much of a hard-ass, yet good-guy at the same time roll, as he seems to play in all his movies). That kiss with the teacher is my nominee for worst on screen kiss of all time. I still think it’s alright but He Got Game is 10 times better imo.

you obviously havent seen The French Connection

or Unforgiven….Hackman is BRILLIANT in both movies

"If there's a new way....I'll be the first in line. But it better work this time...." Peace Sells....but Who's Buying

Proving that you can be gay and not like Madonna, and rock out to Metal. .

Yes I have

And no he’s not brilliant in my opinion because he’s a typecast. That’s like saying R. Lee Emery was brilliant in Full Metal Jacket as the drill sergeant. And for the record I think both those movies are overrated too. Unforgiven is just anther western and The French Connection was all hype (especially about the chase down scene) and didn’t deliver for me.

Hackman rocks

Yeah, he tends to play the same guy over & over, but no more than most movie stars. French Connection, Hoosiers and Unforgiven are straight-up classic, and he’s fun as hell in Crimson Tide and The Quick & the Dead too.

what was the deal with the white guy in Blue Chips? You’ve got Penny Hardaway and Shaq and then what was his name, Matt Novar? Who!?!

by NugNugz on Sep 3, 2010 9:09 AM MDT reply actions

I googled him because I was curious as well … didn’t seem to turn up anything on him. I think he may have actually injured his knee while filming and did actually go run his dad’s farm! haha

Forget Paris

Billy Crystal as an NBA ref. Perfect title, as it was not a good movie, but worth mentioning here. And only here. Now let us never speak of it again.

Love and Basketball? Seriously?

I saw that movie about a month ago for the first time. The first thing I thought to myself when I saw this was, ‘why was this such a popular movie?’ I nearly threw up in my mouth! This movie was a inevitable cure for insomnia if I ever saw one. The love story was unbelievable and weak, especially after Omar Epps dumps her at USC. The ending was the worst. They play a game of basketball and if the girl wins she gets Omar Epps? Come on! I saw that ending coming 10 seconds after they got together in High School. This movie looked like it was put together by a basketball coach who spent the previous two weeks reading romance novels and happened to be friends with Tyra Banks.

The characters weren’t very likable or believable. The dialogue put me to sleep. Omar Epps is a talented actor, I like his work on ‘House,’ but if you have a crappy script and a lackluster director, even good acting can’t bail you out.

Very interesting to see what people think about movies.

casting call

what if they made a movie about the denver nuggets? which actors would play the members of the team. james gandolofini as coach karl. sinbad would play kmart. tyler perry would be melo. jalee white as jr smith. there is one actor that could play 3 different characters. tim grgurich, stan kroenke and the head trainer could all be played by ned flanders of the simpsons. our strength and conditioning coach steve hess could be played by mighty mouse. carrot top could play chris andersen.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
