Say it ain't so, Stan...

E-stanley-kroenke_mediumWhen the news broke Wednesday afternoon that a deal was imminent for Nuggets owner Stanley Kroenke to buy the St. Louis Rams - and thereby be required to jettison the Nuggets thanks to the NFL's stupid cross-ownership rules - the Nuggets "summer of distraction" just got a lot more worrisome.

Star-divide

And here I thought Carmelo Anthony's televised marriage to LaLa Vasquez would be the Nuggets biggest summer distraction.

Kroenke's full acquisition of the Rams (which, it should be noted, is not official yet) has been in the works and in the news for months.  But ever since the rumors started circulating, it's been assumed - or, perhaps better worded, hoped - that Kroenke would figure out a way to finagle a deal with the NFL to circumvent their archaic cross-ownership provision.  This could be done by having his son Josh or his wife Ann assume ownership of the Nuggets, the optimists thought.

Today's news pointed things in a surprisingly different direction, however.  According to The Denver Business Journal's Daniel Kaplan, Kroenke will take over ownership of the Rams and will be given a "grace period" to sell the Nuggets and Avalanche, but not Pepsi Center or the Altitude Network (which, as pointed out by Denver Stiffs reader "Bob in Boulder" makes no sense to a future buyer).

My take?  As a fan of a small market team, whenever I hear the word "sell" I automatically get concerned.  Denver in particular is the smallest city in America to have teams in all four of the premier professional sports - NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL - which often results in the Nuggets and Avalanche trading off bleeding money for whomever owns them (lately it's been the Avalanche that are a greater financial drain on the collective sports enterprise, but in years past it was our Nuggets who couldn't put asses in the seats).  Simply put, under the current economic structure of professional sports it's tough for a market of Denver's size to support two winter teams, but by no means is it impossible.

Regardless of what we're hearing today, it's too early to push the panic button.  There are a number of scenarios still in play that could result in Kroenke transferring...errr, selling...ownership in the Nuggets and Avalanche to a family member.  And if that scenario isn't viable, Denver remains an attractive enough sports market for a new owner to want to keep both franchises here (Denver multi-billionaire Phil Anschutz, anyone?).  Not only is Denver a great sports city, but Pepsi Center is a relatively new facility, the Nuggets have had fairly good attendance recently and the Avalanche are on the upswing.  Moreover, the collective bargaining system in the NBA is due to change in 2011, making NBA ownership - in theory - more favorable for the owners getting killed financially under the current structure.

All that said, I don't want to see Kroenke sell the Nuggets as he's been a good owner.   I'm admittedly overly scarred by the disastrous era of Peter Bynoe, Bertram Lee, Robert Wussler and Comsat that preceded Kroenke's ownership, but by any reasonable and objective measure Kroenke's stewardship has been solid.   Even with Kroenke's recent insistence on frugality, the Nuggets have been one of the more stable organizations since his arrival in 2000.  The team has made seven straight playoff appearances, including three straight 50-win seasons, and almost made it to the NBA Finals in 2009.  And while we may gripe about the Nuggets fold-like-deck-chairs 2010 playoff performance, this team will likely make an eighth straight playoff appearance in 2011, thus remaining relevant for the longest stretch in franchise history since the latter 1980s.

I had a few brief encounters with Kroenke after games this past season.  I'm not sure he knows exactly who I am beyond being just another season ticket holder who occasionally says hello.  But each time I've said hello to this titan of pro sports ownership he's been kind and gracious, just as he is with all the fans that approach him pre- and post-game.  I wouldn't pretend to know Stan, but I can say for certain that he's a hoops junkie and wants the Nuggets to be a winning franchise on his watch.

I just hope Kroenke loves hoops enough - and Denver hoops in particular - to do whatever it takes to keep the Nuggets in the Mile High City.  Stay tuned...

stan saved pro basketball for denver colorado

it is up to the fans to keep the team here. there are all kinds of crazy things that could happen. the owners of the celtics and clippers switched teams many years ago. the sonics moved to ok city. phil anschutz owns the staples center where the lakers and clippers play. my pick has always been stan’s sister in law nancy fancy and her husband bill laurie. they were trying to buy the team before stan. they refused to sign an agreement with the city of denver to keep the team local for the next 25 years.

Before Stan, the Nuggets were an absolute mess

Seriously, like Andrew once said in one of his articles before DS moved to SBNation, one of the owners right before him couldn’t even locate where we played, because he didn’t care.

If Nancy and Bill refuse to sign an agreement to keep Nugget basketball in Denver then to hell with them. We need an owner who, come hell or high water, won’t move this franchise.

???? What?

What universe did that come from?
Stan was not part of the Mutombo years. He bought the Nugs, Avs & Pepsi Center (that was already built before Stan). The bad years were a deliberate salary dump to re-build & they ultimately got Melo et al.
The Nugs, Avs & Pepsi Center were owned by a single entity who sold it to Stan.

The Sonics were a single entity, the owner wanted the city to build a new arena, just like the city did for the Mariners & Seahawks. The city would not, the owner sold the team & the new owner moved the Sonics to OKC.

Leaving Denver???

Granted having an ownership change is another distraction this summer, but I would say the chances of the Nuggets leaving Denver are slim to none. The Nuggs have a great arena, solid attendance, lots of TV appearances, a popular player in Melo, and a current owner who owns the arena and network where the games are played. Kroenke is too smart a businessman not to ensure that whoever owns the team keeps them playing in his arena and his network. My guess is that son Josh assumes ownership of the team..

denver sold out 22 of 41 home dates

that is not solid attendance by any measure. the bulls sold out all home dates AFTER JORDAN LEFT for 10 years. stan could make more money moving the team to st. louis. he could get rid of all the high price players, put a crappy team out on the floor, sell out all the home games and make money. stan never made money on the nuggets. there is tremendous overhead with any nba team. he could make a profit with lacrosse and roller derby. nuggets have been a money pit and a financial black hole.

scottrade center - home of the nhl blues

was opened in 1994 and seats 19,000+ for hockey. it is located in downtown st. louis. basketball can hold 22,000. the city of st. louis has had hockey since 1967. the chairman of the blues is dave checketts. he was the former cheif executive of madison square garden, which owns the rangers and knicks. back in the 1970’s the owners of the celtics and clippers switched teams. st. louis had the nfl cardinals. they located to arizona. people thought the nfl rams locating to st. louis was crazy talk too. walter payton of the bears tried to get an expansion franchise but it was awarded to jacksonville instead. baseball, football and basketball are way more popular than hockey. hockey has been there for over 40 years. atlanta hawks were in st. louis before moving. i can see a scenario of the nuggets moving to st. louis and stan swapping the avs for the blues. HOW IS THAT FOR CRAZY TALK!

bill and nancy laurie once owned the st. louis blues

dave checketts is mormon. he went to the university of utah and graduated from brigham young university. at the age of 28 he became the president and general manager of the utah jazz.. if he is going to run a hockey team he would prefer to do it in his home state’s back yard. checketts wrote a book called THE MORMON WAY OF DOING BUSINESS. i will spell it out for a naive dumb ass punk like you that does not know how the world of big business works. the walton sisters and their husbands take the nuggets to st. louis. they trade hockey teams with the mormon. larry miller the owner of the jazz died a year ago. the name of checketts company is called sports capital partners worldwide. they own the salt lake pro soccer team. what you have left is a mormon business coalition that has the rocky mountain region all to it self for hockey and basketball. these are business people and the bottom line is making money.

by nohoops4u on Jun 3, 2010 3:26 PM MDT up reply actions

That scenario is simply conjecture based

In the interest of business, it would be more profitable to keep the hockey team with a more solid fanbase (the blues) then to trade it for the 4th most popular professional team in a city, especially when the fanbase knows you’re the reason they just lost their basketball team. It’s an interesting thought, building one rocky mountain professional sports empire, but selling the Blues for the Avs doesn’t make a whole lot of business sense, even travel costs will be roughly the same (not that they matter to sports owners anyways)

Let's try to put some realism in the Chicken Little Argument

So far the only argument I’ve seen is trying to play the “Sonics” card. Entirely different situation. The Nugs have a profitable arena they play in. A new owner can’t play the “I need a new arena card”…. errrr sorry that argument was resolved & built….BS (before Stan)

Plus, the believe it when you see it… Stan, like him or hate him, is not selling the team.

Interesting

Isn’t Kroenke just saying he’s more concerned about football than the Nuggets by buying the Rams knowing the whole deal with the cross-ownership thing? That’s kind of what I draw out of it. If that’s the case then I would love to have a new owner who’s willing to spend to win a title (ie: the Nets new owner Mikhail Prokhorov). Of course that’s not guaranteed, but it’s a nice bright spot to consider through all this.

There's a reason there's no NBA ball in St. Louis

It doesn’t sell there.

Any NBA team at risk of going to St. Louis would not be the Nugs it would be whatever team not connected to the hip with a NHL franchise. (MLB, NFL, NHL already in St. Louis) A stand alone NBA team… or an expansion team would be placed there.

Considering of course, Stan could get ownership of the St. Louis Blues… or are the Ave at risk of moving there too?

Stan's Master Plan... redux

It’s all part of Stan’s master plan He wants to be the uber-owner, NBA, NHL, NFL, European Soccer, Pepsi Center, Altitude TV, it’s all one package, so he’ll do and try anything to make it all work. Selling NBA & NHL in order to become a majority NFL owner in St. Louis is not part of his plan.

The Mrs. Stan or Son of Stan becoming Nug/Avs owner is a complete sham and everyone knows it. The only question is whether the NFL powers that be can pretend it’s a legit transfer long enough without giggling until the ink dries.

Buyer beware alert. When Stan is successful, his ownership style will not change; meaning financial profit over team success… even at the cost of a title. If you’re good with that then that’s cool. But that’ll also has a trickle down effect in player acquisitions & FA signings for all teams. There’s a reason why quality FA role players who care about winning a title (Michael Finley is a recent example) go to other teams rather then the Nugs… it’s because the word is out that this franchise will not do what it takes to win a title. So unless a FA is on a money grab they have no reason to consider the Nugs.

My bottom line is I respect honesty a whole lot more than propaganda. The garbage the coach & FO have been shoveling has been lame for a few years. If the team, owner on down simply admitted what they’re strategy was rather than pretending the fans are gullible, I would respect them for that.

Like it, hate it, buy it, sell it… that’s Stanley’s world. The teams will be managed financially sound but no guarantee on success or entertainment… you know kind of like buying a ticket to go watch Microsoft

Making a request, can we give the Nugs to Mrs Stan rather the Son of Stan? If you ever wondered why the Nugs made the draft night trade for Linus Kleiza??? It’s because him & Son of Stan were college roommates. I really don’t want Son of Stan to bring back Kleiza in a huge contract extension…. Cool, we get it he’s your bud, light a candle and visit him in Greece & enjoy the beaches when you go visit him!!!

The plan according to the NY Timesis

for Kroenke to give a majority share of the Nugs/Avs to his wife or son, then complete 60% purchase of Rams owns 40% already. This would technically get around the NFL’s cross-ownership rules and was used successfully in the past to walk-the-line on this rule

My name is the One...

If this is the case....

Why is everyone panicking?

It’s OK, people. I think the chances of the team moving are close to nil. And I think the lack of a big man is a far greater concern than any ownership issues right now. Granted, not knowing who controls the purse strings will make it slightly more difficult to get someone in, but I don’t think it is that big an issue.

Because what Kroenke wants to do is against all the ownership rules

So there’s a lot of posturing and pissing contests going on until someone blinks (ewww, pissing and blinking together… bad image)

Kroenke is betting on the NFL owners blinking first.

For Yogi’s sake this truly is one of those “it ain’t over til it’s over” thangs!!!

I keep saying this….Stan doesn’t want to give up the Nuggets. I get the feeling, however, he may consider giving up the Avs

Thats just a hunch though

there is more to it then that

what has happened already- nfl will allow stan to buy the majority of the rams BEFORE he sells the hockey and basketball teams. the nfl would NOT allow his wife to own the nuggets AND allow stan to buy the majority of the rams. STAN has an agreement in place with the city of denver HE would not move the team for 25 years. stan transfers ownership the new owner would not have that legal obligation.

C'mon Mr Rain Cloud

I’m sure the Nuggets and Avs aren’t going anywhere. Besides the sound of the St. Louis Nuggets sounds horrible. I mean who will their mascott be Archie the Arch? That’s dumb…just dumb enough to work. We’re screwed.

the devil is in the details

right now KSE is trying to sell season tickets. no way will they tip their hand to any future plans. stan’s wife is a billionaire in her own right. there are huge tax consequences with changing ownership of any pro sports team. buying the team is one thing. josh kroenke does not have the money to buy the team on his own. stan GIVES him the team the IRS will have something to say about it. stan’s agreement is with denver. stan owns the building but not the land that the pepsi center sits on. the hoosier dome was built in 1984 and demolished in 2007. life span was 24 years. pepsi center was completed in 1999. it is about half way through it’s practical usefulness. you can bet there are plans on the drawing board for another future use.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
