The Return of Balkman (Nuggets/Thunder recap)

79727_thunder_nuggets_basketball_medium_medium You’re probably thinking, "The return of Balkman? Seriously?" Yes, Renaldo Balkman saw his first action since Dec. 8th and when the last man off the bench enters the game, you know things must be going right for your team. Things went right indeed in Denver’s 119-90 laugher over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Star-divide

I’ve been watching a lot of HBO lately and this month they added a cheesy, but entertaining movie series to their ONDEMAND menu featuring Vin Diesel. In the latest installment Diesel or Dominic Toretto plays the role of the biggest badass and the best driver on the planet. In the opening scene Toretto must rescue his girlfriend Letty, who is hanging onto the back of a two-tanker semi that is trying to throw her from the speeding vehicle, on a mountainous road, while the driver is shooting at Toretto who is doing the bulk of his driving in reverse. NASCAR drivers don’t have shit on Toretto … the man’s movie was titled Fast and Furious and that’s just what the Nuggets were tonight.

Like Toretto with Letty, the Nuggets sort of rescued their fans tonight from having to slide further down a dangerous hill of losing three-straight games. But tonight’s contest was nowhere near as dramatic as the opening scene to the final installment of the Fast and Furious series.

Denver had it in their heads that they needed to share the ball and throughout the game the Nuggets were looking to set each other up en route to 30 assists (the Nuggets recorded 28 total in their previous two games). The main culprit who was dishing the ball more than a local cafeteria worker? Anthony Carter.

Without Ty Lawson I was worried about A.C.’s contributions … he put those worries to rest as he was diligently looking to set up his teammates. A.C. recorded 5 assists in the second quarter and even completed a slightly deflected alley-oop to the Birdman. Carter finished with 12 assists on the night (a team high) and played better than expected.

Staying in tune with surprising performances, Carmelo Anthony had himself a fine ballgame. We learned before the contest tonight that Melo used an I.V. to re-hydrate his body … it worked. Melo started the game off 2-2 from the field and scored 15 points in the opening quarter. Melo had 23 points at the half and finished with 30 points on 11-19 shooting in 32 minutes. Melo led the team in minutes played with 32 total … a great night to get the team some rest. Melo also went 7-8 from the foul line, after harping on his foul shooting on the Stiff List, it was good to see Melo return to form and hopefully fatigue was playing a bigger role than I thought.

Fatigue was something Denver didn’t have to worry about tonight. Chauncey Billups, who plays a little too much, was only needed for 27 minutes tonight. Denver’s bench guys saw extended minutes and could have probably even played more. A.C. led the way with 21 minutes, Malik Allen 12 minutes (Taco time for the whole fourth quarter!), Joey Graham 8 minutes, Johan Petro 7 minutes and The Crimestopper aka Renaldo Balkman 6 minutes. The deep bench contributed a combined 12 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists and 2 blocks.

During the final period I saw Steve Hess help Balkman up off his bed of towels on the baseline and he began to stretch him out a bit. I thought to myself, "Could it be … a Balkman sighting? Nooooo." Balkman plopped back down on the floor and I cursed under my breath. A few minutes later a timeout was called and I noticed Balkman getting helped up again and a couple guys picked up his bed of towels and the Crimestopper began to shed his warm-ups! The arena announcer introduced Balkman and welcomed him back and the crowd erupted for the hustling, dread-locked player. Renaldo made one reverse lay-up and then went 0-3 the rest of the way, with all three misses coming from beyond the arc … to the crowd’s urging and probably his coach’s displeasure.

I did notice Nuggets assistant Tim Grgurich pull Balkman aside after a timeout and have a one-on-one talk with him. Grgurich is a very good coach and very well respected and he seems to take a lot of the younger guys under his wing, Balkman is no different. Also, during the game I noticed Balkman had no real interest in the team huddle and was off chatting with assistant Adrian Dantley. But when he was in the game and a timeout was called, Balkman was right next to Karl listening for instructions. Just an observation.

This was a great game for the Nuggets as they just dominated the Thunder. During the first half Denver stretched their lead to 15 points, but at the half the Thunder had cut it down to just 9 points (61-52). In the third quarter the Nuggets just took off. Looking up at the score I realized that with 2:47 left in the third that the Thunder had only mustered 7 points.

Denver pushed the lead in the fourth quarter to 108-68 … a 40-point lead! The 29-point loss was the worst suffered by OK City this season as things were not O.K. for the Thunder tonight. Kevin Durant scored 16 points in the first half, but finished with just 19 points in 27 minutes on 5-14 shooting. Coach Karl said after the game, the plan was to crowd Durant to discourage him from driving the ball and to switch bigs onto him in pick-and-roll situations. The Nuggets really did a great job of making Durant a non-factor tonight.

Nene came out and made himself a major factor tonight. The big Brazilian was rewarded for running the court and had a couple nice run-out dunks to go alone with his aggressive play inside. This was the Nene we love, the guy who chooses to dunk the ball around the rim and the guy who leaves you wondering why the Nuggets don’t run the offense through him more. He finished the game with 20 points and 2 blocks … both blocks were of the intimidating style.

The Nuggets earned an intimidating win over a team that came in riding a 12-2 record in their past 14 games since beating the Nuggets on Jan. 29th. Tonight though, the Nuggets got their revenge from a 84-101 drubbing by the Thunder in Oklahoma City. Next mission for the Nuggets? Take care of business against the sub .500 Pacers this Friday ... just like Toretto would do, Fast and Furious style.

Views you can use:

  • The Nuggets are now 24-0 on the season when they score over 110 points.
  • Birdman filled up the stat line after returning from injury against the Suns. Bird tallied 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 blocks. His knee injury will be a nagging one all season, but his heart should never be questioned.
  • After surrendering 57 points to Durant, Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green in their last meeting the three combined for only 35 points tonight.
  • My buddy Mark has now attended three-game this season, the Nuggets are 3-0 in those games with a winning point differential of 24.6 points ... can we get this guy some tickets?!

Injury Update:

Arron Afflalo left the game in the first quarter after banging his left hand during a Kevin Durant three-point shot. It looked like Afflalo hit his hand on the ball or KD’s arm, when Afflalo returned his left hand was taped up pretty good and after the game he got X-rayed … good news: the X-ray was negative (according to Travis Heath). His status will be evaluated for Friday soon.

why do you guys call him that? im puzzled

Denver scores 100 pts in a game = Taco Bell gives discounted tacos in Denver area

Malik Allen has a knack for playing garbage time minutes and clinching the 100th point and giving Denver residents a chance for gut-busterrific tacos on the cheap.

Mercifully, Nate, your Fast & Furious reference was limited

Because, man, those are awful movies.

Anyway, a great game & recap, even if we were the beneficiaries of OKC’s Mile High back-to-back. But that doesn’t excuse all 29 points of that beautiful, beautiful thrashing.

Balkman

Frankly, I’m just thrilled to tears he got some minutes. I’m convinced his “back injury” was non-existant and that his showcasing his lack of 3pt shooting prowess was just showboating for his pal smitty. Its frustrating as a fan to see a young player like Renaldo fail for whatever reason, especially with the top notch coaches/trainers we’ve got. Is it lack of heart? Maybe but he hasn’t ever seemed nonplussed on the court. Perhaps like Karl has said its got to do with how he does in practice. But like Iverson has famously said, “are we just talking bout practice?” He’s hoping we get see more Naldo in the future…

Travis Heath tweeted that the fans that you saw in full Sonics gear at The Can needed to to just get over it.
I moved to the Seattle area in 2006 for work from Denver and in talking to a lot of former Sonics fans they will never get over the fact that the Sonics were stolen away from the city by OKC owner Clay Bennett and NBA commissioner David Stern.
I don’t think hardly any Nuggets fans that frequent this sight would simply get over it as Heath suggests if the Nuggets were to heaven forbid relocate. To a smaller market no less.
Watch the documentary at sonicsgate.org
I’m a nuggets fan through and through but as a fan of basketball that story is just unbelievable. It’s on par with Tim Donaghy IMO.

thank stan kroenke

stan’s sister in law and husband, nancy and bill laurie were trying to purchase the team first. they refused to sign an agreement to keep the team in denver for 25 years. that was the second attempt to sell the team that fell through. stan stepped up big time to buy the nugs, avs and pepsi center. he put millions of dollars into the teams and facility. can you say st. louis nuggets?

It’s also sad for Nuggets fans that the Sonics moved. When we retell the 1994 playoff stories it’ll have to be like this:

Nate, “We were playing the mighty Sonics…”
Nate’s Kid, “Wait, the Sonics? Who are they?”

doing things the easy way

nuggets had only three 3 point shot attempts in the first half. this is a great formula for a game plan. execute the half court offense in the first half and force the opponent to use up energy on defense. the third quarter speed up the game in an attempt to run away with it. have the bench players finish off the fourth quarter while the starters rest. a great team victory and every player score except joey graham.

Another fraudulent outcome...

I’m as happy as anyone to see the Nuggets win and do so confidently, but everyone here (plus Woody Paige) are overlooking the fact that this game – like the first time the Thunder came to Denver earlier this season – wasn’t a fair fight. The Thunder found themselves in a dog fight with the Kings at OKC the night before, came into Denver late and never had their legs. So once again, the ticket-paying fans like me and Margabelle didn’t get their money’s worth and frankly, should get a refund.

Really?

how many points does one have to win by to have the b2b excuse no longer be relevant? Leading by 40 in the 3rd has a little more to do with one team being fatigued. I hate when the Nugs use it as an excuse for the entire game and also when Nugs blow-out wins are discredited to an extent. And money back? That would have been a great game to attend for me, I don’t give a rats ass how the opposing team plays, all I want is a good Nugs performance and most importantly a W. If I were at a game in which I had no rooting interest than I’d like a close barn burner but being biased for the Nugs I would have been thrilled to see that game at the can, ass-kicking, fun and never in doubt game. Of course that’s just me.

by Phil H. on Mar 4, 2010 8:30 AM MST up reply actions

Yeah

I mean, I see Andrew’s point, BUT, the Nuggets gave the Suns a much better fight on Monday than the Thunder last night. And okay, so the Nugs game on Sunday was an afternoon game — but there have been lots of nights this year when the Nugs were on the 2nd of a b2b and put up a better fight than that.

I would agree that you can’t draw too many conclusions from this win, but it really was exactly what the Nuggets needed after those last couple of losses. Hopefully this gets them going in a good direction and they take care of business for the next couple of games against lousy teams.

by Artimus Mangilord on Mar 4, 2010 9:44 AM MST up reply actions

Not fraudulent, Andrew... but disappointing

Andrew, As a season ticket holder since ‘03, I used to love these games. Big blowout, no worries about the comeback, starters get rest, Nuggs win big, and maybe AI or K-Mart’s shoes thrown up into my section. However, I’ve grown tired of watching top tier teams (ok… maybe OKC’s not top tier yet, but similar to the Nuggs of ‘03-’04) come into Denver off a tough game the night before, and lay dead by the end of the 3rd quarter. Like Bill Simmons and you say, the NBA loves us season ticket holders. But screw the common fan who cherry picks 3-4 games a year to attend, shells out extra ticketshafter and horsebarn charges to buy tix, and then gets a half (27 minutes) out of the opposing teams’ star. And this is supposed to bring the common street fan back to the arena?

I brought a friend last night who watches every Nuggets game at home and hadn’t seen Durant live. He was impressed by KD in the first quarter, but KD sat for 5 minutes of the second and played some of the third. By the fourth, it was OKC’s 4 rookies for all of the quarter, effectively an exhibition game versus our third line of players. Disappointing, since I thought he was going to see a tough divisional game. The last time I’d seen a 40 point lead live was that Seattle game (ironic?) where we beat them 168-116 in March ’08.

I found this site when you had a petition to resign Birdman. I’m now on board with you for a petition to the NBA to stop and/or limit the back to back games. Yes, they are professionals and should be able to show up every night (even b2b’s) and play. However, the current culture of the NBA and the coaches is disturbing in its disregard to the situation, when examined from the fans’ perspective. Let me know when and if you start one. Thanks!

One and done

As I’m poor, I tend to get upper level seats from sellers on street corners. Since I went by myself yesterday, I got lower level seats for buying an oddball ticket. But since I showed up late and distractedly had a drink at Brooklyn’s before going in, the game was practically done by the time I found my way into a seat behind the Nuggets’ basket.

Oh well. Better than seeing Denver get blown out like against Phoenix a month ago.

Did the Nuggets play that good? Their passing numbers suggest so. But when you look at the shooting percentages, it is clear that OKC just didn’t have their legs after a back-to-back. Seeing Durant miss lay ups was not what I was expecting.

Also: while normally I like to stay at the game until the end, it would figure that I left early and missed Balkman play and chuck up three pointers. He missed them all, but were they decent looking shots?

I’m glad AC played good. I didn’t know his assist numbers were that high. I don’t think he played good in Phoenix and I was a little embarrassed to come around here as you might suspect.

Renaldo probably didn’t respect the game with his shots, but at that point the game was so out of hand I don’t think it mattered.

I believe his first two attempts hit the front of the rim, but his last one was an air-ball that sailed over the rim.

Durant

First, Fantastic game by everyone involved for the nuggets. Extra credit goes to A.C. and Birdman. The three guard lineup came in in the second quarter and actually extended the lead. I still wish Karl would end this rotation. Come back soon, Lawson.

How great was it that the highlight of watching this game was when Rocky stole Marlowes jacket. Marlowe was distracted for about 10 minutes, and at one point he ignored the game altogether and had his back to the court as he was yelling into the stands trying to get his jacket back. It was hilarious, but I did feel Marlowes pain.

As for Durant, I keep reading how this guy is soon to be the best player in the game. I know it’s only one game, but I just don’t see it. What do you guys think? To me, the top players, like Melo, are multidimensional. Melo can post up, score in traffic, hit the midrange jumper, create his own shot, and hit the three. Durant, at least last night, looked one dimensional. If you want to win HORSE with no one guarding, then he’s your man, but otherwise it looked like all he can do is hit open jumpers. That’s great, and obviously he scores a lot, but to me he’s a slightly better Rip Hamilton or Reggie Miller. All I saw him do was run off multiple screens or spot up for three. When you see a guy running off multiple screens it tells you 3 things. 1) He can shoot when open, 2) His teammates have to stop the offense and spend a lot of energy trying to get him open, and 3) He’s not good enough to creat his own shot so he has to rely on off the ball screens to get open. I’m sorry, but until I see more from Durant, he’s simply not in the conversation with the best players in the league.

by CancerSucks on Mar 4, 2010 8:29 AM MST reply actions

Durant is a scorer...

and he is “lanky”, so he can rebound. That’s about it. But the NBA and the media love scorers, so they elevate his game. In some ways, that is not so different from Melo. All Barkley had to say during the playoffs last year is that Melo was the best scorer in the league and everyone turned their head and said “oh, really, we better take another look at this kid.” Oh yea, he’s good. I think even Melo believes Barkley now….and it may even be true.

Stiff nomination: The “Rip” move. Defensive guy playing tough one on one D, with arms extended, offensive guy swings his arms low and up for a “shot”, intiating all contact. Foul called. Some how this has become a legit move and I’ve seen it used by Melo, Kobe, LePout and Durant. It is Reggie Miller kicking the legs out on the three weak and needs to go.

by Pusherman on Mar 4, 2010 8:39 AM MST up reply actions

The Fake and Rake

I like the fake and rake because billups uses it a lot. It’s a smart move, and the defender just needs to not leave his arm out there. Anybody who gets caught with it is simply not paying attention.

The move I hate is the one A.I. always did. Head fake to get the defender in the air, then jump into him and throw the ball at the basket. To me, the offensive player is unnecessarily jumping into the defender. Would love it if they changed that rule.

Did anyone see Kidd dribble into the coach the other day to get a technical foul?

by CancerSucks on Mar 4, 2010 9:05 AM MST up reply actions

I did...it was weak too.

I still hate the fake and rake…just because Chauncey does it, doesn’t make it right. LePout tried it against Melo during crunch time of the Cavs game…thankfully, the refs didn’t call it. Can you imagine if that great game was decided by such a weak play?

Personally, I think any time something is labeled a “veteran” move, it is automatically suspect. To me, this simply means that the player has learned how to take advantage of the system and the poor officiating. Half of these types of moves are just bad for the game, disrupt flow and if someone tried to pull them on the playground, they would probably get laughed, or smacked.

by Pusherman on Mar 4, 2010 9:11 AM MST up reply actions   1 recs

It's better than flopping

Which when done by Manu is considered a veteran move. It’s also more acceptable than the crab dribble that Lebron claims is somehow a legal way of traveling?!?

by Joelsopinion on Mar 4, 2010 10:04 AM MST up reply actions

AI's been rocking the crab for a long, long time.

…flopping, another example of a piss poor vet move. Ugh. We should make a list of Stiff vet moves.

1. Leg Kick on the three aka the Reggie;
2. Crab Dribble aka the AI (way before LePout);
3. The Flop aka the Manu;
4. The Fake and Rake aka the Rip Move aka The Durant (because that appears to be a staple of his scoring diet);
5. The Lay-Up with Flailing Arms and Scream (optional) aka The Melo (he loves it);

Good list

I’ve noticed that Chauncey uses the Reggie Leg Kick more as he’s gotten older. He killed Jason Terry last year in the playoffs with it, I think Game 3 in Dallas.

7. The Bruce Bowen ankle breaker on a jump shooter

8. The lunging 3 pointer to draw a foul- Nash, Kid, CP3
9. The elbow the opponent in the face- Kobe on Doug Christie style
10.The hear the whistle and cry until the call is made up on the other end- San Antonio Spurs
11. The Reggie Evans patented crotch grab and hoist on a rebound

Don't forget

The Kevin Martin. I don’t even know how to describe it because it can only be used if you have his terrible looking jump shot, but I think everyone knows what I’m talking about.

People used to pull the chair on Malone … Rodman used to get him from time to time. Love the chair pull … Kenyon, Nene and Bird have been doing it a lot this season!

I tried to make a fan post of bad and good vet moves

But my computer locked up. A waste if 30 minutes and some pretty witty stuff I must say….better luck next time.

FYI – Good Vet Moves:

1. The Jordan Fade Away
2. The Kareem Sky Hook
3. The Barkley Low Post Bump and Grind (for some reason I don’t hate this)
4. The Chauncey One Dunk Per Year (also known as the AC rattle it home).

…to name a few.

To be truthful, Melo's game isn't much better than Durant's

And since he is a lot younger than Melo, I’d much rather have him on a team than Melo. Not a dig on Melo, as he’s an incredible player. But Durant is right there too. His lankiness helps on defense, and he’s made very large improvements since his rookie season.

No muscle whatsoever for Durant

It limits his ability to bang in the middle.

by Joelsopinion on Mar 4, 2010 11:27 AM MST up reply actions

durant could no bench press 100 lbs.

when he first came into the nba. he is only 21 years old. add strength to his game and watch out.

Not based on last night

Durant didn’t show anywhere near the versatility in his game that Melo has. He only showed the ability to hit open shots created for him by others. I didn’t see any ability to create his own shot. Perhaps he has it, but he didn’t do it last night. He was one dimensional last night, Melo wasn’t.

Scott Hastings best line ever

Marlowe was lamenting the treatment of his jacket, how Rocky’s tail was going to ruin the drop in the back and mentioned that he paid a lot of money for that jacket.

What no mention of Rocky?

The cake in the face bit never fails in making me laugh at an obnoxiously lound level.

Nate the F&F reference doesn’t go unappreciated. I’m a fan of Vin Diesels career made of one line statements.

Here’s hoping that the Nuggets rattle off 7 straight wins to bolster our goal of at least the #2 seed. Here’s also hoping that the lakers and mavs lose 7 of the next 8 games, due to food poisoning.

I love a good cheesy action movie that allows you to guess the line before it's even said ...

Perhaps the best movie for this game: Death Race. That is just a terrible, yet awesome movie.

I do like the cake in the face routine and it took the poor workers about 15-20 minutes to actually get it all cleaned up. I didn’t even notice the Marlowe jacket steal, but I did DVR the game so I’ll have to watch for that. They did show on the jumbotron some guy tossing a jacket to Marlowe and I wondered what was going on.

What point in the game did this go down?

Nate....the Fast and Furious reference made my eyes bleed

god those are awful….awful movies. shudders

Here’s a “better” version featuring the guys from Rifftrax

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToRjVuFAxpY

I think the Nugz just concentrated on denying Durant the ball. It was particularly effective in the Second and third quarter.

And yes….the “precious fluids” seem to have helped Melo. He had more spring in his step…and he was passing quite well. I’d also like to say that Bird looked great as well. Maybe he got some of Melo’s IV? lol

Corey Brewer

he broke Jason Terry’s face last night, well his orbital bone and he now has to have surgery.

I'm not one to delight in anothers injury

…..but that’s a significant injury. Season altering potentially…

Oh…and btw….Dallas struggled against Minnesota….after the trade. Come on people. Lets not bestow the 2nd seed on them just yet. I realize the Nuggets lost very early in the season to the Wolves…but you shouldn’t be having games like that at this time of year. No excuses for the Mavs….no excuses for the Nuggets.

Just wondering? I thought the Wolves were going to beat them last night, but Flynn messed up at the end. :p

by Mini Hulk on Mar 4, 2010 1:05 PM MST up reply actions

jason kidd didnt play

even with the trade, they arent a very deep team and the first 7 players have been logging tons of minutes. the mavs remaining schedule is relatively easy, so i can see them hanging onto the #2 seed, but with their lack of bench i think we could take them out in the playoffs.

by 808inDenver on Mar 4, 2010 1:17 PM MST up reply actions

yes

but his was minor and didn’t require surgery and he still missed 3 games.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
