Redick, Anderson make Denver disappear (Nuggets/Magic recap)
Coaching in the NBA can look simple at times, especially when you have the right pieces, just ask Phil Jackson. For Adrian Dantley things have become anything but simple.
As the playoffs draw near the thing you want most from your team is for them to start getting on a roll. It's sort of tricky because you don't want your team to peak too soon, but you also don't want things surrounding your team to look bleak either ... and that's sort of how things are looking for Denver right now.
Earlier this season when the Nuggets were smoking the best teams in the NBA and losing to the occasional door-mat, things looked as we wanted them to. Coming off a trip to the Western Conference Finals a lot of people assumed the Nuggets were going to get right back there this season. Most veteran players will tell you the toughest part of playing with younger players and losing the ultimate game is that the young guys just don't realize how difficult it is to get back to say the NBA Finals or even the Conference Finals.
As this season went along it looked like the Nuggets, with the additions of Arron Afflalo and Ty Lawson, were headed right back for a deep post-season run. BUT ... shit happens. Shit like Andrew Bynum falling on Ty Lawson's shoulder and keeping the talented rookie on the sidelines for an extended stretch ... that keeps continuing because of either injury or Dantley's trust in Anthony Carter. Shit like Kenyon Martin's battered knee ligaments giving out on him once again ... causing him to miss the rest of the regular season and perhaps the playoffs too.
Our fairytale season has suddenly turned into a nightmare and the Orlando Magic helped keep that nightmare alive this evening. The Nuggets, after losing today 103-97 in Orlando, now limp into Dallas tomorrow night for their biggest regular season match-up to date ... winner assuming control of the second seed out West thanks to a regular season tie-breaker affair.
The problem today in Orlando ... J.J. Redick and Ryan Anderson. After Vince Carter went down in the first two minutes of the game with an ankle injury, Redick stepped in and played the next 46 minutes without taking a break. The former Duke guard shot his way to 23 points on 8-15 shooting on the same day his alma-mater made a return to the Final Four for the first time since 2004.
Not to be outdone, Redick's teammate Anderson went for 19 points on 7-8 shooting, but he did the bulk of his dirty work from beyond the arc going 4-5 from deep where he was rarely covered. It continues to amaze me that the Nuggets continue to lose track of three-point specialists and give dead-eye shooters exactly what they need ... room to freaking shoot. Anderson burned the Nuggets again and again, yet still was allowed to take aim.
Denver and Orlando traded baskets for much of the first half and it wasn't until the third quarter that one team began to separate itself from the other. It was the Nuggets who came out of the locker room on fire and took a quick 59-52 lead in the opening minutes of the second half. Denver even stretched their lead to 10 points before a quick scoring Orlando team battled back and quickly erased that lead. Entering the fourth quarter it was still anyone's game tied at 77-77, but the Nuggets went into "me" mode and the offense shut down.
With three-minutes left in the game and the score 95-90 in favor of Orlando, the Magic finished the game with an 8-7 basket trading and boring ending. The Nuggets continue to have just an overall lack of pizazz ... the team just doesn't seem to have that aura of special around it right now. K-Mart and Lawson definitely completed this Nuggets team and without them the team isn't an elite one. We saw all season how missing a key cog spelled trouble for the Nuggets and now with two cogs out I just don't see this team being able to hold on to the second seed.
The good news ... Denver doesn't need the second seed to make it back to the Western Conference Finals, but they will need to take a page out of Stella's book and somehow get their groove back. As excited as I am to see the bench get opened up a little bit, it's also not a good thing to have to depend on guys who are playing on one-year contracts.
I keep pinching myself and hoping that I'll wake up from this Nuggets nightmare ...
Without George Karl, Kenyon Martin and Ty Lawson the Nuggets will struggle over these next nine games as they have for the past week or so. Adrian Dantley is finding out first hand what it's like to try to overcome the wear-and-tear of an NBA season and he's struggling to put the right pieces on the floor.
Additional nuggets:
- Malik Allen turned in a season high 10 points in 18 minutes ... all his buckets coming in the first half.
- Billups continues to log heavy minutes playing 35 today as Lawson continues to collect time on the bench.
- The Nuggets were just 8-11 from the foul line today. 11 attempts?!?!

Disappointing loss, because of our effort at the end of the third/beginning of the fourth, but also because the refs were terrible in this game.

not a bad game from denver, too bad we couldnt get the W. bird had a very bad game tonight.
Why the fuck
is AC still seeing so many minutes? The 2nd unit has absolutley no energy anymore. Dantley looks like a deer in headlights. Oh, and why the hell was Graham in the game during the last 3 minutes? FUCK! 5th seed, here we come.
i was kind of disappointed that denver gave up so early
17 seconds left, 6 point deficit and we have so many shooters….

I know,
at least foul them, and maybe they miss a free throw or two. Shit, implement hack-a-howard strategy.
4th loss in 5 games
That’s not really motivation-enhancing…

Is Ty doing something poorly in practice and that's why he's not playing
or is he still injured ?

or does the coach just simply not know what he's doing?
could be either one….but he’s off the injured list and i haven’t heard any bad things about his practice habits (apart from being late that one time before the season even started)

Maybe it's been AD that's had the AC man crush this whole time.
Everyone said that it was GK, but from what I’ve seen, when GK was well and coaching Ty played and when AD coaches AC plays. I think we can now start to to blame AD for having AC inbound the passes in the WCF last year. What too soon?!

WTF is up with Dantley??
I mean he beleives Carter wins a game for us against Toronto which may be true, but all I remember about AC in the 4th quarter was that he turned the ball over.
I feel like Lawson with one arm is still better than AC. Ughh soo frustrating when the coach is not in sync with the fans and it seems more and more he is not sync with the players as well.

Sorry for the confusion
I meant to say AC turned the ball over in the 4th against Orlando and didn’t do much to help us. I hope Dantley gets his head on straight if he wants the Nuggets to win. We can’t afford to have Lawson waste away on the bench when all Carter will do in the playoffs is throw away an inbounds pass.

Well...........
I guess the only good news is that the Nuggets clinched a playoff berth today, hopefully getting that 2 spot……..kick the shit out of Dallas
Unacceptable final 17 seconds...
Great recap by Nate as always.
As one of the readers above pointed out, Dantley pulling out the white flag with 17 seconds left while the Magic had just a six-point lead is beyond unacceptable. Courtesy of Rodney Rogers and Robert Pack, Nuggets fans – above any and all other NBA fans – know damn well that anything can happen within the last few seconds of an NBA game. So why not give the team a last-ditch chance to win, regardless of how slim that chance may be? This will befuddle me to no end if the Nuggets fall short of a two-seed in the Western Conference.

You think he actually knew that?
he doesn’t even know who Ty Lawson is and he is sitting right there! I also agree Andrew, especially after watching so much cbb this whole year(fightin’ Bulldogs!) where teams foul even down as much as 10 with 30 secs left(although that is a bit annoying). The Nugs wanted to get to their private plane as quickly as possible.

its a shame we lost
Petro wasn’t playing horribly against Howard,
we didn’t calls that should have been whistled,
that left the team feeling frustrated. I don’t think I’ve
seen Billups that pissed on a no call all season.
its a shame we can’ t take a deep breath and say
to ourselves, “ok we need to change our style and play
a different way before we get Kenyon back etc etc.”

Everyone can agree
If Ty Lawson starts playing again, we’ll have a better chance of finishing the season strong.
wait a minute..
Wasn’t it just yesterday that people were advocating that AD sit the starters or rest them for significant minutes to keep them fresh for Dallas tomorrow? And now he doesn’t know what he is doing?
Fact is, tomorrow night is of far bigger importance than tonight game was. This is not excusing the poor play I witnessed tonight, but ask yourself this: do you want a shorthanded Nuggets squad, down 6, to go into an overtime game the night before a tiebreaker game at Dallas?
I didn’t think so. That said…GO NUGGETS!
Swats.
You don't get it do you BS?
the fact is that you stay out of the loss column at all cost.
The Nuggets don’t have the opportunity to look into the crystal ball and pick and choose their games.
That opportunity was thwarted when they lost to those sub.500 teams.
For all those who couldn’t see the big picture and said it’s just one game look at those losses now.
Same goes for saving players for future games when trying to get the home court advantage.
did you see the starters resting? I didn't
by InboundingLobPass on Mar 28, 2010 9:52 PM MDT up reply actions
That's what I'm talking about
Melo played forty one minutes
Starters did not rest beefy
And the bench rotation is seriously flawed. If not for a chain of good luck on Canada we would be on a 5 game losing streak. Something has to change.

something needed to change
weeks ago. unfortunately we only have 8 games (6 against playoff teams) to get our ish together.
we have 26 losses, tied with Utah and Phoenix. and only 2 less losses than OKC and San Antonio.

No, I understand that...
What I’m saying is that people were floating the idea that AD rest the starters for tomorrow’s game at Dallas. Then when he doesn’t and they almost pull one out, he’s criticized for not getting them up enough to win. I mean it’s a no win situation if you were looking at this as a loss anyway.
I agree that right now the team is really hurting. There’s no interior defense, the rotations are off (save for a few great stretches early in the 3rd) and they are not getting the same fouls they were earlier in the season. Part of it is Lawson, part of it is KMart, part of it is Karl, part of it is Dantley. I don’t know what the solution is but I know they will get back on track.
Swats.

Dude that doesn't mean you give him a pass
If you coach in the NBA and have respect for the game, you should never throw a game unless you are Gregg Popovich. Yes, the Nuggets would have probably lost if they fouled at the end and fought a 6pt deficit, or they could have lost in OT. It doesn’t mean you don’t try because there is a tough game tomorrow, that’s fucking pathetic. It’s never okay to give up.
I didn’t expect the Nuggets to win, but I expected to see AD fight with everyone else, find out what’s working and make the necessary changes to get out of this funk. Waving the white flag in crunch time is unacceptable and he deserves to be called a coward for that. AC has gone scoreless the past 2 games. Petro once again was denied 4th quarter minutes and Malik Allen continues to see big minutes down the stretch. The starters continue to be ridden into the ground. Do you really think we can win in Dallas on back to back with this rotation? Honestly, if you really do then let me know why so I can try to convince myself.

no
We should trade Bird for S. Ibaka. But that’ll never happen.
Just saw an interview with Griner
she sounded like a guy(her voice) and she can ball with the guys I bet.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
The Nuggets didn't lose because of poor reffing
but it sure didn’t help them. How Afflalo didn’t get an and-1 when he was fouled low by Nelson and clobbered up top by Howard is beyond me. At one point one of the Magic (probably Barnes) made a swipe at Melo’s shot and hit him in the head. No call. And the one right before Chauncey took the tech where Nelson grabbed his wrist?
That is either the biggest show of incompetence I’ve seen in a basketball game or else the league decided that Nuggets shouldn’t win this game. And I’m not one for conspiracies.
Yeah...it was pretty ridiculous.
I mean 11 freethrows? Really? Especially when we were attacking the basket most of the night and 6 or 7 of those came in the last half of the 4th quarter.
I live in FL so I was watching the Magic broadcast on Sunshine and the Magic announcers were dumbfounded as well. They kept saying how alot of the times Melo was driving that dwight howard gets called for those fouls alot of the time and they are usually called. Melo was taking it strong to the goal say 5 of his shots a foul was called. Then he goes 11-20 from the field and not 11-25. 10 extra freethrows and he’s good for 8 of those then you are looking at a 34 point 8 rebound game on 11-20 shooting.
by GottaLoveMelo on Mar 29, 2010 9:28 AM MDT up reply actions
It sicks to lose
But this is a loss I expected probably more then any this season. The Nuggets are playing poorly, they’re in the middle of a road trip, they’ve got Dallas on the brain, they never seem to win in Florida…too many factors for the negative side. What sucks is that this road trip is now a disappointment, a win tomorrow salvages it from being a total bust but since the Nuggets we’re not able to win more games then they lost on this trip it has to be considered not up to snuff.
Tomorrow is a true test of Denver’s character. They are in a slump, they are on a back to back, they are on the road and they are playing their most important game of the season. Will they rise to the challenge and overcome, or will they concede and fold? Here’s hoping its the former.
Why live life on the edge, when you can jump off?
Keys to next game
It starts with Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups. They are our most prolific and inefficient scorers. They shoot 19 out of 45 shots tonight and combine for 7 assists. Make some more fucking shots or create more for your teammates. I’m tired of hearing excuses about how bad we have it with Karl and Kenyon out. What we are getting out of these guys is just not good enough right now. Shut the fuck up about how hard it is and play like a good team, and get a god damn win.
Give the L
Not that I even expected the Nuggets to win this game, but the Nuggs have resorted to their old selves, in making All-Stars out of bench or role players (Redick and Anderson). For the Melo era, that’s been an annoyance of mine. Where’s the D lately (especially Bird)? Nowhere to be found, since the 2nd half of the Hornets home game, sans the 4th quarter in Toronto.
I also have to wonder what type of communication Karl has with Dantley these days. I’ve never gone through cancer, chemo, or radiation, but Karl has to do something to instill confidence in Dantley. The lack of focus and deer-in-the-headlights truly shows in AD’s coaching and choice of lineups, tempo, etc. It appears as though these assistants haven’t watched the Nuggets’ successful games throughout the first 60 games of the year. Or have the Nuggs already tuned AD out? I’d like to see Chauncey take over the lead of “player coaching” during the last 8 games of the year, but is he too stretched by minutes?
I’m hopeful for a miracle in Big D, similar to last year’s playoff Game 3. However, we don’t have KMart to hassle and shutdown Dirk (like last year’s regular season). It’s going to be a tough one for us to eek out. Pray for a couple of Jazz “oops” losses, because if we don’t win tomorrow night and run the table at home for the remainder, it’s the 4 seed or worse for the Nuggets. With Phoenix streaking of late (and our last game of the year in Sun City), it could be a 5 seed. It hurts to think that we might not have home court for even one series!?!
AD SUCKS!!!!
How do you not get kicked out of this game as the head coach? Dude is scared and clueless. When was the last time Melo went to the line 4 times? Dantley is a deer in headlights and needs to go. Bring in Bzdelik for the rest of the season. He may at least hav e the common sense to play Lawson over ice cold Billups and Smith
He should have gotten himself ejected. At the very least it fires everyone up and it’s not like AD was doing much else anyway, no more than a figurehead with GK out.

Too bad Dantley was too scared to say anything
The Magic were helped by a laissez-faire approach by the zebras as well, as Denver attempted only 11 free throws despite contact on several drives. Both Anthony and Chauncey Billups picked up technicals protesting the calls, with an increasingly frustrated Anthony rung up for screaming “call that [stuff]” after getting bumped late in the first half. – John Hollinger
Whoa, Hollinger got something right!
I think we should mic up Dantley just to see how many times a game does he talk. I’ll put the over/under at 4.5

Wow Melo didn't score any points in the 4th quarter
All those people getting mad at him for passing the ball can’t be mad now.
When the shots aren’t falling is when you have to rely on your big money star player. If you want to have him as your star then let him do his shit. I do not understand sometimes how the team can just forget about him. Yes he took way too many shots to get his points, but it is not like anyone else was doing anything either.
Also AD’s rotations were not normal. Why rest the starters until 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter? Why is Melo starting the 4th quarter when he usually rests for about 3 minutes and comes out a little before the end of the 3rd. If we really are a rotation set minute team why mess with that? If we had let the bench take the start of the 4th and played starters from about 9 minutes left and on we might have been able to finish the game stronger.
In any case it seems to be the same thing that is losing us games. We get a nice lead on an opponent by taking the ball to the hoop, passing, slashing, off the ball movement, and pressure defense. Then we start being lazy going one-on-one on offense and too often “helping” on defense without actually helping and leaving your guy open for a wide open three, last night especially.
The second guys are totally gassed so why not try playing Ty? At the very least he can push the tempo, pass the ball, drive and create contact, and have pressure defense just by staying in front of his guy.
The big thing is realizing that all of these things can be fixed and fixing them fast. We have eight games, six against playoff contenders, to tune up for the playoffs. Hopefully we use this time to realize what got us so far last year was passing the ball, taking the ball to the hoop, and by having a great pressure defense.

looking at the boxscore
Denver actually played pretty well. they shot 52% from the field and outrebounded Orlando (Orlando did have 1 more offensive rebound than Denver). they went through a cold spell at the middle/end of the 3rd after going up 10 and couldnt recover. during that stretch, the passing wasnt too bad but we were missing a lot of open jumpers. Turnovers, blocks and steals were all pretty even.
Orlando had 22 FT (2 were Ts, both misses) attempts to Denver’s 11 (1 was an illegal D). Both teams shot the ball ~80 times, but Orlando shot 29 3s, Denver shot 16.
How the Hell
is Melo supposed to score with AC on the court? Hello Double team.
I wish there was a way to show Melo’s offensive efficiency when AC is on the court vs off. I am sick and fucking tired of listening to the AC vs. Lawson battle. If there was actually a way to prove how bad Melo gets fucked every time AC is on the court, He would no longer be in the NBA.
I would much rather see Lawson ( a guy that actually has an existent shooting percentage) make a couple rookie mistakes than hear Hastings and Hanzlick blow AC during the game about how much heart he has. AC sucks….There are NO NBA teams that would actually play him; other than our dumbass’. AC sucks….every NBA team knows it which is why it is SO EASY for them to double team Melo. The ONLY way we can actually win when AC is on the court, is if JR or Chauncy is hot.
ANDREW – PLEASE PULL OUT SOME STATS AND PUT THIS GODDAM AC THING TO BED!
I hear you Dude
He has a couple of games where he did well and the AC for MVP bandwagon gets started. No one seems to care that he can’t shoot and his defense is overrated. He runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. And like you said when he’s on the floor the opposing team just ignore his ass an double either Chauncey, Melo or JR.
AC has never in his Denver career had a twenty point game. However the Rok has several already and can push the ball just as well as AC.
There’s no reason that Lawson and Petro are treated like players who can’t contribute.
Good Effort, But We Needed a Win
I thought the Nuggs played well, overall, but still disappointing because we needed a win. All those early season losses to crummy teams will now hurt because the tough games on the road against good teams like Orlando and Dallas become must wins. As Denver continues to fade, Portland, Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix and OKC are all stepping it up a notch.
by ACEIII on Mar 29, 2010 11:39 AM MDT via mobile reply actions
To be honest
The reason we are stinking and still 3rd is because the rest of the west is not that great. Even OKC SAS DAL POR UTH PHX lose to sub 500 teams and are inconsistent. We are lucky to be in a seemingly strong, but free of elite teams Western conference this year

Missing Ty and Kmart
It goes without saying that Denver is a different team without Ty pushing it fast up the floor and Kmart defending and exploding to the rim. With those two out and Bird playing with one wing, the Nuggs look quite a bit slower and less athletic, which has been their trademark the last few years. Where di all of the running and gunning go?
