Game 70 Preview & Thread: Bucks at Nuggets (7pm MST)
Milwaukee Bucks at Denver Nuggets, Mar 20, 2010 7:00 PM MDT
Nate and I are out of commission this weekend, but I'll try to sneak a preview in at some point today. In the meantime, please leave your thoughts and comments here on tonight's upcoming Nuggets/Bucks game...likely to be another Nuggets walkover given that the Bucks played a double OT game at Sacramento last night.

JR can hit more
Brandon Jennings is so overrated. He reminds me of a crappier version of AI

But he just seems to hog the ball too much
AI would also get 6-7 assists per game, but he was far from a good passer.

If I remember that play correctly...
The Nuggets lost the ball out-of-bounds.

Nene on Bogut will be VERY interesting
Bogut is the second best center in the league. He can score well, rebound well, isn’t a shabby passer, and plays with a lot of effort. I personally believe that it’s him and Salmons, not Jennings, that are the reason why Milwaukee is on fire. Our key is to control Salmons and Bogut while keeping an eye on Luke Ridnour and Ersan Ilyasova. Carlos Delfino is putting up decent point-forward stats there, but I’m sure that Melo can keep him to his 10 ppg average. I actually didnt’ know that Delfino was such a good passer.

salmons is good
i’m an AI fan first and foremost, and I watched those god awful 76ers teams and I always thought that Salmons was a good player. Everyone saw how well he played in that epic Bulls vs. Celtics series in the playoffs last year. When Salmons is on, he is really, really hard to stop.
This would be a good game to get Lawson back
We could use his speed on Jennings.
Bogut is good, but Nene, as much as I complain about his being too soft and unselfish, never ceases to amaze me by playing solid defense against elite centers. Petro will have some problems on Bogut, however. I expect him to get in early foul trouble and Nene to have to do some of the work.
Salmons will be an easy cover for Afflalo. I expect Melo to have a big night and the game to be closer than we might otherwise expect with the late arrival of the Bucks. It is no joke to include them in the conversation of the league’s hottest teams right now. The way they are playing, they could beat Boston or even Atlanta in the first round.
With Milwaukee and Charlotte playing smart basketball, you have to admit that the east got a little bit more interesting this year. Still no match for the west.
I’m actually looking forward to this game. I think I’ll try to go. Why not?

salmons
last season he was playing forward. bulls this season tried to have him play shooting guard and he struggled with 3 point shooting. bucks have him back at forward. coach scott skiles demands a disciplined approach to the game. defense, rebounding and executing the half court offense. denver gets off to a bad start or has a bad second half like they did last game the bucks will not allow them a chance to come back. the key is to limit the bucks to one shot on offense.

Skiles....grade A jerk who's act wears thin on players in two years
….people like hard asses to “straighten up” teams but unless your name is Bill Parcells you aint winning a championship with them. I remember the Bulls had a good thing going but Skiles abusive coaching wore out the team. Now we have a shell of a team being coached by Vinny Del Negro

injured players
I can only assume that when a player gets hurt, if he can, he continues to train the other parts of his body that aren’t injured right? ie. Ty hurts his shoulder but he keeps lifting lower body and running for cardio. I can’t imagine Hess would have it any other way. Almost makes you think Ty would come back faster and stronger than before???

"I believe that basketball, when a certain level of unselfish team play is realized, can serve as a kind of metaphor for ultimate cooperation. It is a sport where success, as symbolized by the championship, requires that the dictates of the community prevail over selfish personal impulses. An exceptional player is simply one point on a five-pointed star. Statistics—such as points, rebounds, or assists per game—can never explain the remarkable interaction that takes place on a successful pro team."

There are a TON of weak/weird fouls being called right now.
Of course, they’re keeping the Nugs in the game, so I won’t complain too much.

What a pathetic effort… I’m about as optimistic as it gets in sports fans, but this was a must win… playing a fairly poor team on a back-to-back at home… just plain weak.
Game lost
fittingly Melo being a selfish shit hole finishes our chances
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
How fitting that the Nuggets' last chance at winning this game
Ends with Melo missing a layup and not getting a call
how can we miss so many damn layups!
we finger roll too much and do too many falling off kilter type shots
by ColoradoAggie11 on Mar 20, 2010 9:33 PM MDT reply actions
I would have played Graham in the 4th . . .
. . . not that it would have mattered with Melo not passing in the last five minutes.
And Chauncy missing so many lay-ups.
OK time to draw a PLAY that makes sense..
instead of inbounding the ball to whoever is closest and letting him jack up an off balance three pointer
ZERO tacos on the entire home stand
it’s a good measuring point of how piss awful it was, maybe going on the road is actually a good thing.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
i don't get why everyone is complaining about melo
i didn’t see the whole game, only the 4th. He was taking it to the hole and barely missed a couple layups. why is everyone tearing him apart for that? it’s better than settling for jumpshots and contested 3’s.

Sorry Melo froze out his teammates
Nobody else touched the ball in the last 5 minutes. It’s hard going 1 on 5. If Graham played instead of Melo we would have won
by runningdonut on Mar 20, 2010 9:38 PM MDT up reply actions
I totally disagree with this assessment
How can Melo freeze everybody else out. He’s not the point guard. We ask Melo to score in crunch time. That’s his role. If he’s drawing the defense, it’s on the other guys to move without the ball. Our offense was so stagnant, and if anything, Chauncey was the one who froze them out. I’m not blaming Chauncey, but I’m not going to blame Melo, either. This was a group effort. The thin that I’m most frustrated with is our insane strategy to switch every half-decent screen on defense. We get killed by it every time. What’s worse is that there are teams we don’t do it for because we’re afraid of mismatches (like the Lakers), and our defense is active and effective. For some reason, though, we’ve been doing a lot of switching, and tonight it killed us.

Guys, we have to look on the bright side
Maybe this game will be the wake up call.

They've put up a good fight, but they desperately need Kenyon for a playoff run
Not to mention TyLaw. THey need his spark off the bench.
I am just sick to my stomache
That was the most frustrating and ugly game I have ever watched. I can’t believe I made it all the way through that uninspired performance
by Cargo5 on Mar 20, 2010 9:39 PM MDT via mobile reply actions
I know this isn't going to be a popular statement after tonoight's game (I'm pissed too):
But they still have their best record through 70 games in the history of the team . . . and that’s without many key players for long stretches of games thorughout the season (Chauncy, Kenyon, Melo, TyLaw).
THAT BEING SAID, THIS WAS A VERY SAD DISPLAY OF BASKETBALL . . . PASS THE BALL!
I'm really glad that they have their best record through 70 games
Unfortunately, it means nothing.
by Uh on Mar 20, 2010 9:42 PM MDT up reply actions
It means they're STILL second place in the west and have a chance to keep it that way.
Of course, they’ll need to play better than tonight.
by blooming rock on Mar 20, 2010 9:43 PM MDT up reply actions

Because to be honest, they should be so many games better right now.

I agree, we should be even with the Lakers right now.
I’m not trying to defend some of the awful losses, just trying to look on the bright side.
by blooming rock on Mar 20, 2010 9:45 PM MDT up reply actions
unfortunately other teams are playing really well too
I just think if we played hard every game we could have a much better handle on 2nd seed and actually contend with the Lakers for first

We’d be challenging the Cavs.

So where does this go in worst loss of year column?
definite top 5 in my mind.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
No Bucks are a top 5 playoff team in the east
that is not saying much but that is compared to the twolves/kings/any sub-500 team
by ColoradoAggie11 on Mar 20, 2010 9:41 PM MDT up reply actions
Well in normal circumstances I would agree
yet when a team is coming off of a 2 OT game the night before on the west coast and then you go out with an effort like the Nugs did it’s like losing to Sacto all over again.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
No you can't say that
It’s too misleading. The East has 4 legit playoff teams. To group the Bucks with those 4 because of record is like saying the Nets are in the top 30 teams in the NBA.
by Uh on Mar 20, 2010 9:43 PM MDT up reply actions
yes but they are much better than any of the bottom of the west sub-500 teams we have lost to
Or say the 76’s, wiz, detroit, bobcats…
by ColoradoAggie11 on Mar 20, 2010 9:47 PM MDT up reply actions
The last couple of games we have played horribly
We have played only one quarter per game it seems like. This game was the first quarter. We really need Kenyon and Ty back. We need to stop missing layups (seems to have been a trend lately). We need to pass more and drive to the hoop off the passes. AD needed to realize that graham was his best/hardest working player in the game and gone to him in the 4th instead of JR and AAA.
Overall depressing because we all know that the Nuggets are a much better team than how they have been playing.
by ColoradoAggie11 on Mar 20, 2010 9:41 PM MDT reply actions
Check out these stats:
Melo: 10-27 shooting
Chauncy: 5-17 shooting
JR: 5-15 shooting
Nobody else took more than 7 shots (Nene: 3-7)
And: Birdman missed three dunks!
Melo was 10-29
He was embarrassed by John Salmons
by runningdonut on Mar 20, 2010 9:45 PM MDT up reply actions
Not a huge AC fan, but why didn't he play more?
He’s been a big spark for them the past handful of games.
by blooming rock on Mar 20, 2010 9:47 PM MDT up reply actions
He even helped lead to the steal that birdman missed one of his dunks on
and with Melo’s steal I think?

Luckily seeing GK never can fire up the team
unlike tonight! No shot against AD but people who blame bad losses on GK’s lack of passion won’t say the same about AD tonight. I’ll continue to blame the players for the most part.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
They totally overlooked the Bucks tonight.
Don’t know if it was a coaching/prep thing or player thing . . . but it was very apparent
by blooming rock on Mar 20, 2010 9:51 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah scouting continually seems to be a problem
I’m not sure why though
by Uh on Mar 20, 2010 9:53 PM MDT up reply actions
you have to think they do not watch video or read the reports
They continually allow some teams to do what they are good at while not attacking the weak defensive spots
by ColoradoAggie11 on Mar 20, 2010 9:54 PM MDT up reply actions
Seems like they have been coming from behind a lot lately.
Again, not sure if that’s a coaching/scouting thing or players getting ready thing, but it’s got to stop or their in trouble.
by blooming rock on Mar 20, 2010 9:56 PM MDT up reply actions
Gotta get a 3-2 roadie
I assume we will beat Orlando, Boston and Dallas because they are big named power teams and then lose to New York and Toronto because why show up for those guys?
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
I think it will be 3-2
but with loses in Orlando and Toronto. I think Melo will get up for NY and Chauncey will for Boston. I think Dallas is too important to not show up for. Also I think they will get a boost from having Ty back. Hopefully Ty and AC take minutes from Billups because when he is missing layups you know he is tired.

Swept by Milwaukee
coaching is always up for debate but the players didn’t act like they wanted to win tonight.
you can all point to melo and blame him
but he’s had selfish spurts all year wrong. He was playing with a busted left hand, and even though it didn’t work out, he still took it to the hole late. Great effort.
No, this game is on Chauncey’s shoulders.
Chauncey was on PTI last year on 5 good minutes, and he said that George Karl gives him a lot of freedom, and he tries not to abuse that freedom.
Well, recently, he has been abusing that very freedom. Who has had more TO’s, forced plays, and poor shot selection recently: JR or Chauncey?
From about halfway through the game, the unit i wanted on the court was AC, JR, Joey, Bird, and Nene
I blame Melo and Chauncey and Bird
tonight I hated them for the game but still love em seeing they’re Nugs and we wouldn’t be here w/o them.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
I think he's afraid to hit that broken finger
Bird had a 50/50 game in my opinion. He was rebounding and blocking shots. However, three missed dunks is a mystery to me.
J.R. horrible shots.
I love Melo, but this was not his best effort.
Frustrating after the way he came out and grabbed 18 rebounds last game.
Dude could do whatever he wanted if he put his mind to it . . . unfortunately, sometimes he doesn’t seem to want to work . . . get’s lazy and tries to win by outscoring the other team.

96% of the 4.8 mil in espn's bracket challenge had Kansas in the sweet 16
great night to be a K-state fan in OKC though, first could root against Kansas as they lost and then for their team as they won.

Yeah, that f-ed a bunch of brackets . . . somehow I took maryland to beat them in the next round, so I might be looking good if the Terps come to play tomorrow.
Took WV overall . . . thought they might not even get past Kentucky.

Kentucky made a statement
my new favorites to win the tourny but they are inconsistent at times(ahem…Nugs sound familiar?). Rooting for the mid-major thought.
Proud member of Thuggetz nation.
Chauncey scored 29 pts on 5 made shots
That’s incredible and he made all 17 free throws.
I really don’t think it’s up for debate though. This one is on Melo.
re pass the ball
Do the Nuggets have a motion offense in place that they can call when stagnant one on one sets in? In situations like last night the coaches need to get a passing game/motion offense going and sit players that insist on playing one on one.
The ENTIRE team blew this game
You can’t pin it on Melo entirely. You can’t pin it on Chauncey. If anything, let’s pin it on the NCAA Tourney since Melo and Chauncey and Ty admitted to not getting the rest required from watching all the games
If anything Melo played harder than anyone else, with a sprained wrist. Nene played fairly well. But it seemed there was no energy whatsoever and they didn’t have their collective head in the game. Also, some of this might need to be on Adrian Dantley for not seeing the team was not prepared mentally for this game.
