Game 69 Preview & Thread: Hornets at Nuggets (7:30pm MST)

New Orleans Hornets at Denver Nuggets, Mar 18, 2010 7:30 PM MDT

80542_nuggets_hornets_basketball_medium_mediumWhen the Hornets play at Denver on Thursday night they'll be playing the second of a back-to-back, their fourth game in five nights and will be flying in from the Pacific Time Zone.  Can you say "Nuggets blowout"?!

Star-divide

Didn't I just preview these guys?  Oh, right, I did.  When I covered the Hornets game last Friday night, I pointed out how rookie point guard Darren Collison has been an exceptionally bright spot in an otherwise dark season in New Orleans.  But in spite of their numerous injuries, a major coaching change and the need to work in some young players, the Hornets are clinging admirably to an almost-.500 record, currently sitting at 33-36.

As of the writing of this preview, I have no idea if the Hornets will beat the Golden State Warriors at Oakland tonight.  What I do know for certain, however, is that the Nuggets are going to destroy them at Pepsi Center tomorrow night and the game will be over within minutes of the second half.

I don't have the numbers handy, but the Nuggets are virtually unstoppable when a team comes into Denver from the Pacific Time Zone on the second of a back-to-back.  Making matters worse for the Hornets, they'll be playing their fourth game in five nights (all on the road).  As I've ranted against all season, games like this shouldn't even be scheduled because, ultimately, it's the ticket-paying fans like you and me who get screwed with an awful performance.  And I guarantee that the Hornets performance at Denver Thursday will be god awful.  In fact, if the Nuggets don't win this game by at least 15 points, I'll be beyond shocked.

As a note to the readers, due to a confluence of circumstances neither Nate nor myself can cover the next two Nuggets games (and no, we won't be partying somewhere on spring break, although it's fair to say that I'll be somewhere that has a sports book in it).  So in our stead we're going to have two guest game recappers and I'm thrilled to announce that they'll be GoldenNugget for the Hornets game on Thursday and Beefy Swats for the Bucks game on Saturday.  Both GoldenNugget and Beefy Swats will post their game recaps as FanPosts soon after the games are over, and I'll do my best to publish their recaps to the home page so Denver Stiffs readers can comment on them.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS (AGAIN)...

Hornets Stiffs

-Emeka Okafor: When I snagged Okafor in the middle of my fantasy basketball draft I was convinced I had a steal on my hands.  Amazingly, Okafor played pretty damn well with Chris Paul but has been completely lost with Collison at the helm of the offense.  So lost, in fact, that Okafor airballed two consecutive free throws against the Thunder recently.

-James Posey: Remember when this former Nugget was an integral piece to the championship puzzle in Miami and Boston?  Now Posey is just another example of why guaranteed contracts ruin the NBA.  Averaging a career-low 5.1 ppg on a career-low 35.3% shooting from the field, the now 33 year old Posey is due $6.9 million...two seasons from now!

-Peja Stojakovic: Due a mere $15.3 million next season, the soon-to-be 33 year Peja is averaging near career lows in all categories and will be out for a few games with a lower abdominal strain.  Because, you know, what's an NBA season without Peja getting hurt?

Hornets Non-Stiffs

-Darren Collison: Many are ranking Collison as the NBA's second best rookie (I'll take Stephen Curry over Collison any day of the week, but still love what Collison is doing).  The question facing the Hornets, however, is what to do with Collison when CP3 returns?

-Marcus Thornton: When you're the first second round pick to score at least 37 points in a game as a rookie since Sherman Douglas did it in 1990, you've got game.

-David West:  On a team being forgotten by most who follow the NBA, West is quietly having yet another solid season.  His scoring and and rebounding is down a tad, but his field goal percentage is up and he's had a slew of monster games recently.  Notably a 40/10 game to lead the Hornets to victory over the Magic a few weeks ago.

no surprises

it will be interesting to see if coach karl will try the coach dantley idea of trying to double team the rookie guards for nawlins. it did not seem to work and may have actually disrupted denver’s normal defensive rotations. there is a great opportunity to get the bench loads of playing time. hope lawson comes back soon. it looks like cb1 is starting to hit the wall.

So per Lawson's twitter he had an MRI today

I hope it was a good one to make sure that everything was on track and that he will be back soon.

I can see us playing the hornets close again through the first half and hopefully turning it on in the second half and showing them who the better team is. Unfortunately we do not have much of a bench to give our key players a rest if this happens!

Hopefully the nuggets do not rely on a good second half/4th quarter again because I think through the last couple of weeks of the season they are going to do that to save energy. If this works against the worse teams, aka wizards, that is fine but do not expect it to work against marginally good teams, aka rockets/hornets, or good teams, aka Orlando/Dallas. Can’t wait for this to be the second win of our next 10+ game winning streak.

Looking at the standings

Every playoff team is 7-3 or better in the last ten games.

Non-playoff teams are just going through the motions unless they somehow are in the game in the second half and having fun.

I agree

Graham can carry the load…..plus they have two full days off before they start the next road trip. I think that would give Bird a full week off

In A.D. We Trust

Chauncey was on The Fan yesterday afternoon, and he was saying how much he respected AD’s coaching style. He said something along the lines of ’He’s a winner, and when he tells you something, you know he knows what he’s talking about because he’s been there."

If the Floor General is on board, you know he’s telling the others to respect AD.

by Joelsopinion on Mar 18, 2010 3:03 PM MDT up reply actions

I think if Dantley is "coaching" tonight then Karl needs to stay away from the bench

It may be a bit confusing for players to have Karl there in person and not coach. Just an opinion though. They may handle that sort of thing fine.

I had Murray State

Both of those teams were terribly seeded, as was most of the tournament. What a hatchet job by the committee.

Duke loses to A&M

That bracket is actually completely wide open. I think about seven teams could win it, including St Mary’s. I personally had Baylor, but my bracket is starting to come unhinged.

I know

I was really bummed to see UTEP and Butler playing each other (I thought they were about a 7 and 4 respectively). I waffled on the pick a 100 times and allowed myself to get talked into UTEP. And I had the winner beating Murray State regardless, so I’m already down three 16 teams after Georgetown and Richmond flopped.

We have more to look forward to than Weber, but

after watching a ton of Big Sky games I’m convinced that, if healthy, we were the best team in the conference. Losing Devin Beitzel hurt and we just weren’t sharp for most of the Montana game. Then again, Weber blew a 20+ point lead, so that’s pretty brutal.

Well, an utterly disgusting second half,

but still an easy win. Right now it’s all about the W. I’ll take it.

No

Neither is Morales. I hope Betancourt will be back soon.

Tracy said Betancourt will definitely not be the closer.

Street needs to get healthy. I gotta go with Frankie Mo or Belisle over Corpas. Rumor has it we might go find Beimel

Damn, just take Morales

I know he can be a bit crazy with his pitching, but I’d rather have that over Corpas or freaking Beimel.

I think they will raise their level

Milwaukee isn’t one of those powerful non-playoff teams the Nugs can’t handle.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
