Game 68 Preview & Thread: Wizards at Nuggets (7pm MST)

Washington Wizards at Denver Nuggets, Mar 16, 2010 7:00 PM MDT

60143_wizards_basketball_medium_mediumIf it weren't for the woeful New Jersey Nets, the Wizards would be neck-and-neck with Indiana for "worst team in the East" honors.  I couldn't think of a better opponent for the Nuggets to get back into the win column.

Star-divide

Watching the fourth quarter of the Nuggets game against the Rockets last night, I was convinced that this preview would be another one of my "the Nuggets are quietly the hottest team in the NBA right now" pieces and that the Nuggets would be looking for their eighth straight win when Washington came to town.

Unfortunately, in spite of a spirited effort (especially by Carmelo Anthony) against the Rockets, the Nuggets ultimately lost by a mere two points and we'll have to settle for rooting for a team that's won six of their last seven games.  But hey, things could be much worse...we could be the Washington Wizards, inarguably the NBA's biggest disappointment of the 2009-10 season.

Prior to the season kicking off, the Wizards were selected by many (including yours truly) to finish fourth in the Eastern Conference...which is like finishing ninth in the Western Conference.  The thinking was a team stacked with talented players like Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, Mike Miller, Randy Foye and Andray Blatche coached by the usually solid Flip Saunders, the Wiz would rebound from a disastrous 2008-09 campaign and contend in the East.

Little did we know that the players would tune Saunders out almost instantaneously, the Wizards longtime owner Abe Pollin would pass away, a few charter plane ride card games would go absurdly awry, Wizards teammates - including the team's star, Arenas - would pull guns on each other in the locker room and three of the team's best four players would be traded for expiring contracts.  Rarely in NBA history has a team gone from being an up-and-comer to a complete rehabilitation job so quickly.

I happened to be in Washington and attend a Wizards game at the Verizon Center just days after the Arenas story broke.  Granted, they were playing the equally woeful Pistons that night, but the arena was half full (or is it half empty?), the players were listless and the entire atmosphere had a "we're just going through the motions" feel to it, from the players to the fans in the upper rafters.  It's an understatement to say this, but the Wizards are in disarray and this should be to the Nuggets advantage...regardless of how genuinely exhausted the Nuggets must be right now.

SCOUTING THE WIZARDS

Wizards Stiffs

-Gilbert Arenas: Arenas has been one of my favorite NBA players that doesn't wear a Nugget uniform since I saw him score 35 second half points against us as a member of the Golden State Warriors during the 2002-03 season.  That following offseason, the Nuggets took a shot at Arenas but the Wizards paid more, so we settled on Andre Miller.  Unfortunately, Agent Zero has been nothing short of an absolute zero for several seasons in a row now due to an assortment of injuries and exceptionally bad judgment.  Oh, and he's owed $22.3 million...four seasons from now.

-Josh Howard: Longtime readers of this blog know how much I loathe Howard, a perennial Nuggets pest when he played small forward for the Mavericks.  But after ruining his Mavericks career thanks to a shitty attitude and questionable off court habits, Howard was banished to the Wizards, talked trash about the Mavs on his way out the door and subsequently tore his ACL and is done for the season.  Howard's contract has a "team option" of $11.8 million that kicks in next season, and somehow I suspect the Wizards won't be anteing up.

-The rest of the team not named Andray Blatche.

Wizards Non-Stiffs

-Andray Blatche: If there's been one benefit to the departure of stalwarts like Jamison, Haywood and Butler it's that Blatche has been able to develop into the players Wizards fans were hoping for.  Blatche routinely goes for 25-plus points and 10-plus rebounds, but he's also a bit of a turnover machine.

-Abe Pollin: If you want to learn a bit about recently deceased Wizards owner Abe Pollin, read this.

A must win?

You betcha’. With only 15 games left on the schedule this 3 game home stand needs to be a clean sweep. Especially with 2 back-to-backs on our next 5 game roadie. I had hoped to avoid the year end push for the 2 spot, but here it is and we’re banged up and bloodied. We really need strong bench play this week in order to get the starters some rest. Step it up in the first half and we’ll get just that.

And welcome back Earl Boykins. Sorry we won’t get to see you go head-to-head with Ty Lawson. That would be a treat for undersized gym rats everywhere!

+1, the rest of this week is definitely must-win

Man, it would’ve been great if the Nuggets could’ve held on last night. But I’m deciding not to complain about finishing 3-1 on a 4 game road trip with no K-Mart, and with no GK because he was home getting a feeding tube put in.

If the Nuggets can have themselves at 48-22 going into that evil road trip next week, that’s still very good. Take care of business, and they can be no worse than tied for the 2 seed before they set out.

Melo needs to show he learned his lessons

from the defense Thornton played against him last game. That was Melo’s worst game of the season IMO.

by margabelle on Mar 16, 2010 11:24 AM MDT reply actions

What game were you guys watching

45 points and 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 TO. Okay, so the assists could have been higher, but he was over 50% from the field, and they almost never lose when he’s over 50%. Melo was Fantastic last night.

by CancerSucks on Mar 16, 2010 2:08 PM MDT up reply actions

The last Wiz game

Last night Melo was awesome.

Remember how Melo hogged the ball in the 4th while the team collapsed around him against the Wizards? Thornton owned him, and Melo needed to (and has) play team ball since.

by margabelle on Mar 16, 2010 2:11 PM MDT up reply actions

Oh

Got confused. He’s on a hot streak, so hopefully they are grumpy about losing last night and crush the wizards, the way Boston crushed in their game last night.

Thorton is a solid player

and always plays well against the nuggets. why the clips got rid of him i don’t know

Andrew

Have you guys given up on recaps? Just wondering

On a side note. While Arenas is a comeplete boob, he is ‘serving’ his time and shouldn’t be a stiff just cause of his off ocurt tactics, I thought this blog was about basketball? Next thing I know you will be writing about the latest buzz on Lidsay Lohan (she wants to sue e-trade)

Recaps should be up for those who didn’t catch the game or missed part of it. I’m sure some of the readers would be down to post a makeshift version if they Andrew and Nate can’t make it

even though we will immediately rip your opinion to shreds

we still like to read the recaps :)

If the Nugs don’t get the 2nd seed, they may be able to look back at the last 2 minutes of last night’s game as a reason why. Totally went away from any type of team game, on both ends of the floor, and decided to stand around and watch to see if Melo could win the game by himself. Will this team ever really “get it?”

I completely disagree with you

I did not see a stand around and watch melo game. Here’s a step by step view of what went down. A lot of these points I disagree with though.

http://nbaplaybook.com/2010/03/16/mental-mistakes-doom-the-nuggets/#more-1070

1. Start off with melo tapping the ball away then letting Ariza get off a 3. Not that bad of defense by melo in my opinion. Good clutch shot by Ariza. (he’s done that before against the nuggs)

2a. Good idea but poor execution on the pass from melo out to AAA. He had to catch it low and it affected his shot. (still seems like team basketball to me.)
2b Appeared to be a foul on JR for the rebound. That article blames melo for the poor transition D. Not the case. Melo was on Battier posted up in the corner waiting to nail the corner 3. Billups was playing weakside and did not slide over early enough to stop Scola. Also he made a stupid weakass foul giving him a 3 pt play. Bad play by Chauncey.

3. Melo passes the ball to Nene in good position (yes he passed it AGAIN). Nene gets a decent look over Scola, layup unfortunately rolls off the rim. Nuggets still down by 1 with 32 seconds left

4. Down 1 32 seconds, DO NOT NEED TO FOUL HERE. Chauncey stupidly picks up his 6th foul. JR again going for a steal rather than getting back on D

5. That link cleverly doesn’t include Melo barreling to the basket and getting a dunk (should have been and 1)

6. AC gives up the last shot to brooks. Didn’t think it was that bad of defense, more like a good shot by brooks. Would have rather seen AAA on brooks.

7. More inbound problems. ugly looking play melo pushes off and still isn’t open. let’s off a contested 3 that airballs. game over.

I don’t see how people can blame the last 2 minutes on anybody but maybe billups possibly JR. This was not a stand around and watch melo game. Melo played team basketball and did what he needed to do to put the team in a position to win. Yes he scored a lot, but in the last 2 min, he drove and dished twice, granted one was a marginal pass. Mental mistakes and again FREAKING INBOUNDING cost us. Give the rockets credit for hitting shots they needed to hit.

Also, all this could have been avoided if we had played any sort of defense in the first half.

nuggets did not deserve to win

denver played bad defense for 3 of 4 quarters of the game. houston had 16 points off of the fast break IN THE FIRST HALF. nuggets had 99 field goal attempts to houston’s 79. coach dantley said after the game it was transition defense that cost denver the game. louis CEMENT SHOES scola came up with a loose ball laying on his back under the nuggets basket. he got up from the floor and chugged 94 feet to put in an uncontested lay up. TOTALLY PATHETIC. transition and perimeter defense has been a problem with denver all season. the suns know how to exploit this weakness better than any team. nuggets are in big trouble if they play phoenix in the playoffs. houston showed the entire nba how to beat denver.

pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow

by nohoops4u on Mar 16, 2010 6:54 PM MDT up reply actions

The way I see it

Nuggets took too many long jumpers down the stretch, culminating in the Afflalo 3 pointer (a bad pass, a bad shot, leading to bad transition D and a bad 3pt play surrendering the lead). Granted, those are the shots that got us back in the game and built a lead, but Melo and Billups continued to take them when the Nuggets could have slowed the game down, executed the offense and preserved the lead with D. The Nuggets completely lost their poise down the stretch and showed no leadership on the court. Houston played harder and exploited the Nuggets weaknesses to perfection

Can we even call it a collapse?

The Nuggets only held the lead briefly, and were battling back from a terrible 1st half. If anything I’d say it was a failed come back, a la Britney Spears. ZING!

by Joelsopinion on Mar 16, 2010 3:28 PM MDT up reply actions

as disappointing as last night's game was

was anyone else as happy as i was that nene was getting the ball in the 4TH QUARTER?!?!?!

that has never happened before. Never. That key play where AD drew up a play for Nene was awesome. I don’t care that it didn’t go in. It was a good look. Nene is so underused on this team that it is sad.

*side note regarding Nene
Everyone is always complaining “dunk the ball Nene!”
Just because his hand is in the VICINITY of the basket doesn’t mean that he is able to dunk it. He’s not Dwight Howard. He can’t just jump straight up and over a guy and dunk on him. A lot of the time, his post moves have his momentum moving away from the rim, especially on those spin-finger roll combos that he does. It is actually really hard to dunk in that situation.

and its not like Nene never dunks the ball. Whenever he cuts into the paint and takes a pass he throws it down furiously.

Question for you guys

the general consensus here is that Lawson is better on D than AC.

this makes sense because Ty can stay in front of his guy, and AC sometimes lags behind, but watching AC fill in these past few games, it really can’t be said enough how great AC has been down in the post. This is just as important on this team that switches on every screen (even on the screens that don’t require switching).

what do you guys think

I actually have always thought AC was a solid defender

but he played too idiotically on offense to get playing time, now that he’s playing solid on O he is no longer a liability on the court.

Proud member of Thuggetz nation.

by Phil H. on Mar 16, 2010 9:27 PM MDT up reply actions

you bring up AC's offense

he is terrible on shooting, and Lawson started out shooting red hot, but before his injury he was just hesitant to shoot at all. TY is a better player than AC, no question. But Ty in the games immediately before his injury, and AC in these games seem to be pretty even

by jb22 on Mar 16, 2010 9:30 PM MDT up reply actions

AC passes better than TY though

yes TY is better but if AC keeps playing like this he can’t but help the team.

When I read the caption on the atdhe.net feed about the Nuggets scoring 100 and fans getting free tacos, I made the joke about the sexy Denise taking my order. It produced propitious feedback from my illustrious Denver Stiffs colleagues but it has accursed the Nuggets’ potent offense. Sorry.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
