Game 66 Preview & Thread: Nuggets at Grizzlies (6pm MST)

Denver Nuggets at Memphis Grizzlies, Mar 13, 2010 6:00 PM MST

Bird_green_medium It's too bad the Nuggets wont be playing at home on St. Patty's Day, or at all on March 17th, because we'd maybe get to see some more green uniforms. Well, the Nuggets are playing this evening in Memphis, the Saturday before St. Patty's, or as it's commonly known ... the party day. Enjoy your green beer and car-bombs* and hopefully a big Nuggets road win.

Star-divide

The particulars ...

Records:
Denver:
44-21 (28-5 at home, 16-16 on the road)
Memphis:
35-31 (20-14 at home, 15-17 on the road)
Denver current streak: Won 5. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games.
Memphis current streak: Won 3. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games.
Injuries:
Denver:
Ty Lawson (left shoulder contusion) and Kenyon Martin (left knee tendinitis) are both out tonight. Renaldo Balkman (mid-back strain) did not make the road trip with the team and may have had surgery on his back ... looking to confirm.
Memphis: Ronnie Brewer (partially torn right hamstring) is listed as day-to-day. Steven Hunter (sore left knee) is out.

Opposition's Take: Straight Outta Vancouver

Andrew often likes to remark about fights not being fair when one team is coming off a back-to-back, he has even gone as far as saying perhaps fans should get a "refund" for having to pay for such lopsided contests. Well, what would he have to say about tonight's game where both teams are coming in off a back-to-back?

Well, Andrew has been working with Denver Stiffs reader Chris Chan on an upcoming back-to-backs piece for SB Nation and shared this statistic with me:

During the 2009-10 NBA season, when both teams are coming in for the second of a back-to-back game, the home team wins 57.3% of the time.

So, if you want to take the statistical approach, the Nuggets only have a 42.7% chance of winning tonight's game. Count me among those glad that this game wont be determined on paper, but rather with sheer will and hopefully good passing and shooting for Denver.

The Grizzlies played at home last night against the New York Knicks and won the game 119-112. The Grizzlies sit just outside the playoff race in the dreaded #9 slot, right behind the Portland Trail Blazers. Can the Grizzlies catch the Blazers and make their first post-season season appearance sans Pau Gasol? They'll need to catch fire the rest of the way and that means stealing some wins at home against good teams ... teams like the Denver Nuggets.

The only catch for Memphis? The Nuggets can't afford to drop any games down the stretch as they are trying to keep pace with the red-hot Dallas Mavericks for the #2 seed. So, while each team might be a little tired after playing last night, neither can afford to play the back-to-back excuse card.

Memphis is one of the few teams that I haven't got to see play much this season. Zach Randolph's play has been lauded quite a bit this season, as well as Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol. O.J. Mayo has flown a little bit under the radar for the Grizzlies with his newfound team play, but he's still averaging 17.5 points and 3.1 assists for the Grizz.

Memphis has a pretty potent starting five, but the team doesn't really have much of a bench and as we've seen in Denver ... the bench can make all the difference. When your bench rotation features Marcus Williams, Sam Young, DeMarre Carroll, Darrell Arthur, Hamed Haddadi and rookie NBA-DL call up Hasheem Thabeet (poking a little fun at the #2 overall pick) it's easy to see why your starters average 36.5 minutes per game (with Mike Conley averaging the least minutes at 31.5 and Zach Randolph logging the most at 39.7 mpg). In comparison the Nuggets starting five average 33.4 minutes per game and we all know Denver used a very tight 8-man rotation until K-Mart's recent injury.

So if Memphis misses out on the playoffs this season it could very well be because of their lack of depth. Add a few pieces in the offseason and the Grizzlies could be a very dangerous team.

Danger would be a good word to describe this game as noted above, neither team can afford to drop many games the rest of the way. So, even though both teams are coming off a back-to-back, I expect this game to be a dogfight. Hopefully the Luck of the Irish will be with the Nuggets ... even if it's a little early and I'll cheers my car-bomb to that!

* - If for some odd reason you are not sure what a car-bomb is ... I don't know what to tell you. Please don't drink if you are under the age of 21 and a U.S. resident.

oops

You should probably change the score of last nights Grizzlies game to a win, 119-112…I was waiting for a joke of some sort and realized you probably wrote most of this column before the game was over…hehe.

This should be an exciting game, for me at least, Carmelo is my favorite player I the league (outside of all the Grizzlies of course) and this will be my first time seeing him play in person. Go Grizz and Good Luck

I'm happy Memphis is back-to-backing as well

It will make things fair and give the Nuggets no excuse for playing flat. While the Griz are playing at home, they had to travel farther than the Nuggets.

If the Nuggets don’t win easy against a non-playoff team, I’m going to be grumpy. Denver has to use this to get over .500 on the road. There is no reason for Denver not to go 4-0 on this road trip.

Man, it is beautiful outside. Gotta like that.

Another thing...

Denver’s next back to back is immediately after this one. After taking Sunday off, the Nuggets finish the road trip with a stop in Houston and come home to face that Wizards on Tuesday. Denver will playing playing it’s fourth game in five days. Poor Nuggs.

The good news? Washington will be playing their fifth game in six days. And playing at altitude. It will once again be a match-up of exhausted teams, with the Nuggets clearly being favored here.

There is no reason this team shouldn’t continue to win despite this grueling part of the schedule. Should. Could. But, knowing these Nuggs, they could content themselves to play uninspired .500 ball. Take your pick.

These back to back games

Should really show us how much the Nuggets want that Title. It’s unfair that they have two back to back games in the week, but it is what it is. They can’t afford to lose any of these games, but if they lose one, I won’t be too upset… unless they lose to the Wizards at home.

by Mini Hulk on Mar 13, 2010 1:09 PM MST reply actions

The back to back statistic is meaningless to us unless you compare to it to the home winning percentage of two teams when neither is on a back-to-back.

another step up for the front line

last time denver played at memphis randolph went off for more than 30 points and 20 rebounds. the big men will be tested on the perimeter with zach’s 3 point shooting range. this will be another game cb1 has a clear advantage at the point in terms of height, strength and experience. the ok city game denver had only three 3 point shot attempts in the first half. chauncey decides to be stupid and lazy taking too many outside jump shots o.j. mayo and rudy gay will make denver pay with transition scoring. rebounding, executing the half court offense and more rebounding will be keys to winning this game. poor guard play with turnovers and too many jump shots like last game will result in denver getting blown out.

Yeah...

There were a couple of games where Denver won on the road the second night of a back to back. I was thinking Marga was asking strictly about back-to-back road games. Those games the first night was at Denver, so it is a slightly different scenario. I was unclear. Sorry.

This should be a close game

I expect it to come down to the final 2 minutes, both teams are tired, and I think that the keys to winning will be having our bench outperform the much weaker Memphis bench, because I have a feeling the Nuggets starts save for maybe Petro will be tired.

It could be like that Atlanta game at the beginning of the season, where we fall behind early, but tell ourselves that we’ll dig ourselves out later. However, we got down by over 20 at the half, and there was NO EFFORT INVOLVED.

It’s about time the defensive intensity rose a level or two. The refs have been nothing short of awful tonight. I count at least a half a dozen plays that contributed to Grizzly points. That’s 12, so naturally the Nugs would be up by 21.

you have to wonder

if this road warrior version of the nugs we’ve seen the last few days has to do with AD demanding good effort every night. GK always seemed to enable crappy road performances-remember his “great success” quote about going .500 away.

by Rainbow skyline on Mar 13, 2010 8:32 PM MST reply actions

that quote came at the start of the season

denver’s first roard trip of the years was 6 games that had 3 back to back games. that quote has been taken out of context ever since. remember smith was suspended, ac was starting and denver had 4 new players on a 13 player roster.

This game shows why we don't want replacement refs.

I mean, this game might have been called at least somewhat properly had they been the regular full-time refs…

WE NEED TIM DONAGHY REFFING OUR GAMES!

But in all seriousness, the replacements showed themselves to be even worse than the much-older regulars in the preseason. However, all they need is seasoning in the DLeague.

The seasoning is so that when they get to the NBA they can properly carry out the demands of Stern

Behold the all-mighty Stern button!

Now, I doubt that Stern really uses such a thing, but speculating is fun, right?

I was trying to make the point that even though these were regular refs

that it was a pathetic effort. How many extra possessions did Memphis get in that first half? There were three back-to-back-to-back ball out-of-bounds calls to the Grizz that should have gone to the Nuggs (two weren’t even close). Throw in the “clear path” foul that wasn’t and the Grizz had 4 extra possessions in about 2 minutes of play.
Then there were the non-calls and the make-up calls for both teams…
At one point Afflalo had taken about 5 steps with the ball and there was no travelling call, he passes to Nene, who hands the ball right back and the whistle blows for travelling on Afflalo. It was obvious that the ref was calling it from 10 seconds earlier…
And seriously, how many travelling calls did they miss? There were 3 times where a player skid a foot (Bird twice, and Mayo), Afflalo had some steps, Gasol did a 360 shuffle…
And what about Gasol grabbing the rim with one hand while “dunking” with the other?

Seriously, this was BAD!!!

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
