In AD we trust... (Nuggets/Hornets recap)

80529_nuggets_hornets_basketball_medium_mediumNuggets assistant coach Adrian Dantley is doing a fine job steering the team's ship in George Karl's absence.

Star-divide

When it was announced that George Karl would miss several road games in his battle with throat and neck cancer, yours truly questioned whether or not assistant coach Adrian Dantley was up to the task of filling in for the Nuggets head coach.  While I seriously doubt AD will ever win over 970 NBA games as Karl has, AD's 4-1 record (3-0 this season after tonight's win at New Orleans) as the Nuggets head man in Karl's absence is admirable and deserving of our praise.

Sans having a lineup including Malik Allen, Joey Graham and Anthony Carter on the floor together for about two minutes tonight, AD is doing a lot of things well.  Notably, he's keeping the Nuggets loose during a tough stretch of the season and the players are responding with smile filled victories.  At the end of the day, basketball is just a game and those who play it should be having fun while doing so.  And if that means a few behind the back passes, spectacular dunks, trash talking and so forth - all of which we saw tonight - then so be it.

Feeding off AD's loose atmosphere the most appears to be Nuggets superstar small forward Carmelo Anthony, who again tonight reminded us that in a close game, the team with the best player often wins.  And no one was better than Melo tonight.  Not only did he have 12 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter, but he tied his season high with 12 rebounds (four offensive).  When Melo finds that extra gear in the fourth quarter, the Nuggets become lethal closers as the Hornets - who put up a good fight until the final three or so minutes - found out tonight.

Also contributing to the cause in the rebounding department were Johan Petro, Nene and Chris Andersen - all three of whom are taking on additional responsibilities with Kenyon Martin being out and are delivering handsomely.  By out-rebounding the Hornets 49 to 36 in this game, the Nuggets were able to prevent their recent playoff foes from getting easy second chance baskets and turned the Hornets into the bad jump shot shooting team that they are.

Congratulations to AD and the other Nuggets assistants for keeping the ship afloat while Karl deals with ongoing cancer treatments.  We continue to wish Karl and his family the best and, thankfully, in the meantime the Nuggets appear to be in good hands with the coaching staff that Karl has been grooming.

Non-Stiff of the Night

Carmelo Anthony: As noted above, Melo carried the Nuggets to the promised land thanks to 12 fourth quarter points and 12 rebounds.  If the Nuggets continue to rack up wins, Melo may vault himself back into the MVP conversation.

Stiff of the Night

Morris Peterson: It's tempting to put J.R. Smith and his 1-12 shooting night here but at least J.R. contributed to the game in other areas, including four assists and two steals.  And thus, the Stiff of the Night goes to Morris Peterson.  I almost forgot that "Mo-Pete" was still on the Hornets and with good reason because he had yet another forgettable game tonight.  0-6 from the floor and four fouls in 32-and-a-half starter's minutes.

Melo buys a house in L.A

Heard this on the radio wonder if it’s true? Not only is this a concern for the nuggets future but it pisses me off he wants to live in laker land? Or maybe he wants to be a laker/clipper come free agency time? Anyboby else know this new revelation?

by tknuckle on Mar 13, 2010 12:00 AM MST via mobile reply actions

Eliminate him wanting to be a Clipper

Only person in the world who has ever wanted to be a Clipper was Baron Davis, but I don’t think people should read too much into this. L.A., sadly is a huge place for all types of celebs to live, including sports stars.

I’m just agreeing with other people that this isn’t that big a deal.

But if I made the money that Melo makes, I’d probably like to have a place in So. Cal. Why not?

Not to mention

the weather advantage. Melo grew up in West Baltimore with crummy weather. Played college ball in upstate NY, also crummy weather. Finally he’s playing pro ball in Denver-it may snow, rain, sleet, hail, hit 101 degrees, or get hit by a tornado-Colorado. Just saying, maybe he wants to enjoy a temperate climate, as opposed to tempermental.

Speaking of West Baltimore

I’m hooked on HBO’s The Wire and can’t help but think of Melo every time they mention somebody snitchin… Crazy good series. How long was Melo there and how much exposure did he really have to streetlife since he went to a prestigious high school basketball academy, I wonder? Just curious. His sucker punch and run on Mardy Collins in the brawl was pretty weak after all.

this is where melo trains in the off season. he is also getting married to lala v. sounds like he is making a major financial commitment to his family and profession. if the mother of your child is named lala la sounds logical to me.

Don't underestimate

The LaLa factor. This has Lala written all over it. It was his company that put out the documentary on Tyson last year, and there’s another on Roberto Clemente in the works. I have a feeling this purchase is related to putting him closer to the plethora of post production facilities in LA/Hollywood.

Melo played great tonight

Really the first game in a while where I could see his smoothness in full effect. He wasn’t really the “raging bull” we have come to have know on offense (though he was on defese), mainly hitting silky j’s as his primary was to get buckets. I was really impressed by his rebounding. I never knew he could be that tenacious on the glass. Reminded me of his ’Cuse days a bit. AD is doing a great job too. The guys all seem to like playing for him, as they all seem very happy the past few games.

I like the extended rotations with AD at the helm.

This gives the starters a little more rest going into the second half. So long as AC, Graham, and Tacos can keep the game close, there’s no reason not to use a 10 man rotation in the 2nd quarter IMO.

Interesting game...

I had obligations, so I DVRed the game at halftime. I was nervous about the Nuggets since it was so close for so long. But I was never that nervous. Denver survived a bad game from AC and JR Smith because Melo had a good game. Not great. But solid. He made shots when it mattered and picked up some slack on the boards with K-Mart’s absence. I’m real happy with Melo after tonight.

Also: I am again impressed by Petro, who logged a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes. Not bad at all. I feel vindicated advocating for a deep rotation all season with this talent wasting on the bench. Though, to be honest, it was Malik Allen coming off the bench instead of Petro. See. I can admit when I am wrong.

Big game tomorrow. The Nuggets have a chance to break over .500 on the road and play decent basketball on the second night of a back-to-back.

Peace,
FA

the guard play was very weak from all the players

cb1 scoring is expected with all the shots he took. he had 5 turn overs and played poor defense on collison. thorton hit 4 of his first 5 3 point shot attempts and pretty much had his way with both smith and afflalo. petro’s major weakness on defense was exposed in the third quarter. west scored 14 points in the quarter getting 6 points in a row during one stretch. petro defended well inside in the 1st quarter. once west started scoring from the outside in the second half he was hard to stop. decent guard play from denver the game could have been a blow out.

I agree the guard play was not up to par tonight

However this is an anomaly. The nuggets have the best guard rotation in the league, so one off night is acceptable, especially when you get that W. And I just want to give a shout out to the Milwaukee Bucks for taking care of business last night against dem Morman boys.

Petro was ok..

but I wish he did not get worked as much as he did against West, granted West has been his toughest assignment all season long, but there was times when he did not come up on his man, possibly waiting for help from the blindside but he kept allowing West to stroke that 15-20 foot jumper and working his way to the basket, However he did well enough on the boards and seems to be getting better at blocking his man out. He is doing his part on offense, namely tip-ins and that little 10 foot jump shot he can hit, so hopefully he can progress and not become a liability on both ends of the floor but I hope he can develop his own game so we can rest the other big men more often.

by CloudBurst on Mar 13, 2010 3:17 AM MST reply actions

Are you serious?

I thought Petro played GREAT defense. With the exception of two or three plays where he was sucked down for help defense, he bodied up on West all night long and made him take tough, contested jumpers. Really, how many easy layups did West have? I rest my case.

by NuggBuckets on Mar 13, 2010 8:20 AM MST up reply actions

west went 12-20 for 30 points

I don’t know about great defense. Petro often lost him and gave him wide-open 15 footers, which he will hit every time. still a very nice game though, and west is an unusual assignment.

petro will never be able to stay with dirk, amar’e and channing frye on the perimeter. there are not a whole lot of secrets in the nba. the few that do exist do not last for very long. petro is similar to andersen last season. the lack of playing time works in petro’s favor right now. once there is some video for teams to look at they will know his weaknesses and exploit them.

He's no KMart

but he’s no Tacos either.

When Lawson and KMart are healthy, it will be hard to justify an 8 man rotation if the Nugs are playing flat.

by margabelle on Mar 13, 2010 9:25 AM MST up reply actions

I'm sorry but I disagree

West is a capable outside shooter. That 10-15 footer is what made him an All Star, and he took what he was given.

Now that he’s getting real minutes, Johan is no longer playing to use his 6 fouls. His tendency has been to be too aggressive and pick up quick and silly fouls. Instead he has been moving his feet well, staying between the ball and the rim and boxing out. He’s contesting but not reaching. Besides, I’d rather see him beaten on a 15 footer than be driven on and posterized.

I think he has earned more than a few minutes of garbage time every 3 or 4 games. Adding his enegry for 8-10 minutes a game would allow KMart, Nene and Birdman to stay fresher and play harder, which is what we’re going to need in the playoffs.

by My3Cents on Mar 13, 2010 9:35 AM MST up reply actions

i'm not sure about that...

it seems that AD lets the nuggets run wild and doesn’t have quite as steady a hand as george does. yes, the nuggets have had wins under AD but were they as disciplined as they should be at this point of the season? idk. i think jr had something to say about that too…

By JR at the end of the half. (The one directly after the play where he was out of position on offense leading to Chauncey throwing one into the crowd). Big BBall IQ on that guy. Nice dunk against the TWolves with no one around him, though. Can totally see him holding the Larry O’Brien.

While I won't defend JR being out of position on the offense...

I liked the idea of him jumping out to take a charge. The problem was that he either went one step too far or just arrived at his spot a moment too late (or both). Either way it should have been ball out of bounds and not 3 shots.

Dear Andrew...

I preferred this site when you werent such a Karl lover. Finally we are seeing a deep bench. You criticise a lineup with AC Allen and Graham? At least they all play different positions and are giving guys some much needed rest. Petro gets minutes now.. many of us have been asking for this all year. Karl and his lawyer were nice to you. Fine. But dont ignore the fact that the rotations make much more sense sans Karl.

by gonugs on Mar 13, 2010 6:04 AM MST reply actions

lineup

that lineup with A.C., Allen, and Graham, also had J.R. and Birdman I believe. The criticism is deserved when you field a lineup with only one player that the defense has to worry about. In that lineup they freely double J.R. off of A.C. and A.C. wasn’t good enough to do anything about it. AC was good the last two games, but dreadful last night. He had more TO’s than the box score shows because of things like his overthrown outlet pass that Melo tried to save, so he got the TO. There is no excuse from either Karl or Dantley to run out such an offensively deficient lineup.

I do agree that the coaches deserve criticism for not using the bench more this season. While it’s clear that Petro, Allen, and Graham are not superstars, when they have played non garbage time minutes, they have performed capably. At least one of them should be the the regular rotation for 5 to 10 minutes every game.

I see positives only from this game

This is a championship caliber win:
- J.R. went 1-12 and we won, if we can continue to win with J.R. shooting like crap, we’re
- Petro’s 10 and 10… he’s long, he makes conscious effort to box out nearly every time, he will help us big time… IF KARL PLAYS HIM. Now the good thing about Karl missing 2 more games is Petro has a chance to keep padding his stats, I hope hope hope Karl will use him legitimately in his rotation for rest of season and playoffs… loving the length and “real center” body he gives us. This is what we’d been lacking and been wanting to trade for, apparently that guy was in GK’s dog house, chewing bone.
- We play with focus and seriousness of a championship team
- Bird continues to give us everything he got, especially in rebounding department… he plays so hard that I worry at times he wouldn’t have nothing left come playoffs time

When Ty comes back, we’ll be real tough… when KMart comes back even at 75-80% and doing just 75-80% of what he did in the season, we’ll be great.

The only complaints I have:
- Lakers won
- We lost focus at times, I hope Melo can stop bitching to refs and letting his man run and get easy baskets… this is costly in playoffs… we also need to consistently put away teams when we’re up by 4 pts, extend it to 8 and then double digit, etc… instead of letting them tie it, and even take a lead. We did it in the fourth quarter :)

by SnakefromHell on Mar 13, 2010 7:03 AM MST reply actions

Petro, two left feet, another benefit of deep bench

I agree with the previous comments re Petro and the deeper bench rotation. Again….regarding Andrew’s “two left feet” comment. I think Petro shows excellent quickness for a seven footer. The “Proprietors” should have listened to us stiffs earlier and been pushing for more Petro time and a deeper rotation. Also…..one point about the deeper bench that has not been discussed. It helps team morale. Karl’s dog house philosophy….. burying guys on the pine for weeks on end does not lend itself to a positive attitude players 1-12. TEAM!

by passtheball on Mar 13, 2010 8:33 AM MST reply actions

This is a good statement

However come playoff time, I don’t really want to see AC in the game for half of a crucial 4th quarter.

by wangstu13 on Mar 13, 2010 8:58 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed re AC

Although…he’s been doing some good things out there and has come in handy with Lawson’s injury. I’m just saying….If I had been Balkman or Petro end of February, I would have been ticked off and hanging my head. There were times when both of them might have helped in some of our losses to sub 500 teams. Balkman did not see the floor for 30 some games in a row? That’s baloney. I give the bench cred for seemingly keeping a good attitude while doing some serious splinter picking that at times made no sense.

by passtheball on Mar 13, 2010 9:08 AM MST reply actions

While I do like Balkman, and wish he would get it together, I think it’s common knowledge that he doesn’t get playing time because he doesn’t put in the work. He’s lazy, doesn’t practice hard, and doesn’t really try to improve. Until he turns that around, I see no reason for him to get playing time.

by aLuffabo on Mar 13, 2010 9:38 AM MST up reply actions

In Karl's defense re 8 man rotation

Balkman wasn’t the only scrub who played like an idiot in garbage time. In blowouts, our end of the bench always “disrespected” the game (to coin a Karl phrase) and did not do anything to give Karl confidence in them. Leads would go from 30 to 20 when we played scrubs.

by margabelle on Mar 13, 2010 9:39 AM MST reply actions

That's actually true

But Petro usually tries hard. Our scrubs are a lot better now that Yakhouba Diawara isn’t lacking it up for us. And yes, I know that it was like two years ago. But still.

I hate the Lakers, and I don't think we're going to catch them in the standings

But, I could be wrong. Even though the Nuggets are surprisingly looking alright without K-Mart, we still need him. I just hope we can finish the season on a strong note and take back what belongs to us (2nd seed).

Fair point, but...

Is Petro lazy? Doesn’t practice hard? Doesn’t try to improve? I doubt it…looks like a hard worker to me. And While it is “common knowledge” regarding Balkman. Do we really know the whole story? Let’s be real, the Nugs and Karl control the message out. Please share some Petro or Balkman quotes or interviews. Was Balkman lazy last year when he played? If so, why did the FO sign him?

When coach calls a timeout

Watch Balkman. He’s off in lala land, staring up at the light riggings. He shows no interest in what’s going on. You have to give respect before you get it.

Concerning the loose attitude

the Nugs were far too loose those first 3 quarters. You want them to have fun but damn that sloppy un-focused play will not due against better teams. The 4th on other hand was the Nugs saying “fuck this we are gonna start playing like we can and get this W”.

Wow.

This is longest thread I’ve seen in a while without a Laker Troll. Was there an Earthquake in LA last night or something?

by All Day Jay on Mar 13, 2010 11:25 AM MST reply actions

Terrible passing

I think last night might have been some of the worst passing I’ve seen, and from guys who are normally good passers, too. We pulled it together late to win, but how many easy steals did they get off us? It seemed like every other possession and it was leading to a high percentage of their offense. If it weren’t for easy hoops off of steals and long rebounds (we missed an absurd amount of threes, as well), that game was a blow out. It was like everyone was a bad quarterback constantly forcing passes into double coverage.

Damn I smell a rat

The Nuggets can’t think they are going to switch on the juice in the second qtr

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
