Game 65 Preview & Thread: Nuggets at Hornets (6pm MST)

Denver Nuggets at New Orleans Hornets, Mar 12, 2010 6:00 PM MST

73756_hornets_rockets_basketball_medium_mediumThe wheels came off the Hornets season a long time ago.  But if it weren't for rookie point guard Darren Collison, they wouldn't even be close to playing .500 basketball.

Star-divide

When I attended NBA Summer League in Las Vegas last summer I specifically wanted to see how the young point guards sized up.  You could tell right away that the Bucks' Brandon Jennings was NBA-ready.  Even though he was only 6'1" he had abnormally long arms and big hands - almost an Allen Iverson body type but with a few more inches of height.  Same went for the Thunder's James Harden and the Kings' Tyreke Evans, who looked like men among boys out there.

Speaking of boys, I was shocked at how small Stephen Curry, Ty Lawson and Darren Collison were versus their competition.  Maybe I'm saying this because I'm almost 6'6" myself and am rarely impressed by anyone's height (except for the time I was in an elevator with Zydrunas Ilgauskas), but back in July I couldn't foresee how great these guys would be given how small they were.  Curry at least had a silky smooth jump shot and exceptional quickness.  Lawson had the quickness, the ball sense and the bulk to stand up to bigger competitors.  But Collison?

Collison didn't seem to have much going for him from my perspective at the time.  Listed at 6'0", he might be 5'10" on a good day and he weighs a mere 160 pounds.  Furthermore, Collison had one of the worst jump shots technique-wise that I've seen in a while.  It's a poor man's Reggie Miller-type shot, almost a two-handed push shot.  I quickly saw why this kid - in spite of being a bona fide winner at UCLA - slipped to the 21st overall selection.

And yet here we are in mid-March, and - until recently losing seven of 10 games - Collison has been carrying an injury-ravaged Hornets team to within arms' length of a playoff berth.  Not only has Collison made 10 NBA GMs look like morons (not hard to do) for passing on him, but he's been getting Rookie of the Year consideration alongside Evans and Curry.  The clear winner is and should be Evans, who has been doing it all season long.  But Collison's play since future Hall of Famer Chris Paul went out in late January (likely) for the season with knee surgery has been nothing short of sensational considering he's an undersized rookie.

In the 19 games that Collison has started at point guard in CP3's absence, the rook is averaging 20.1 ppg, 9.8 apg, 1.7 spg and is shooting 48.3% from the field.  Those aren't typical numbers for the 21st overall selection in the draft, folks.  And during this stretch, Collison has had games with 18, 14 and 20 (20!) assists.  The only downside to Collison's game right now is that he's very turnover prone, to the tune of 4.5 per game since filling in for Paul.  But he gets a pass because all rookie point guards give the ball away at an alarming rate.

Unfortunately for Collison and Hornets fans everywhere, the team is still recovering in the wake of Byron Scott's poor coaching and subsequent firing, and Paul's injuries.  Scott should have been canned the day after the Nuggets beat them by 58 points at New Orleans in a playoff game last spring.  That's right, the day after.  But by allowing Scott to come back while doing nothing to upgrade the bench sans drafting Collison and stealing fellow rookie Marcus Thornton (who's been an absolute gift, more on him shortly) from Miami, the Hornets were in disarray before the season began.  But as I like to say to my girlfriend after an argument, we are where we are and we have to move forward.  And while the Hornets present won't include a playoff berth, the Hornets future - thanks to Collison and Thornton - actually looks pretty bright.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS...

Hornets Stiffs

-Emeka Okafor: When I snagged Okafor in the middle of my fantasy basketball draft I was convinced I had a steal on my hands.  Amazingly, Okafor played pretty damn well with Chris Paul but has been completely lost with Collison at the helm of the offense.  So lost, in fact, that Okafor airballed two consecutive free throws against the Thunder the other night.

-James Posey: Remember when this former Nugget was an integral piece to the championship puzzle in Miami and Boston?  Now Posey is just another example of why guaranteed contracts ruin the NBA.  Averaging a career-low 5.1 ppg on a career-low 35.3% shooting from the field, the now 33 year old Posey is due $6.9 million...two seasons from now!

-Peja Stojakovic: Due a mere $15.3 million next season, the soon-to-be 33 year Peja is averaging near career lows in all categories and will be out for a few games with a lower abdominal strain.  Because, you know, what's an NBA season without Peja getting hurt?

Hornets Non-Stiffs

-Darren Collison: For all the reasons noted above.  The question facing the Hornets, however, is what to do with Collison when CP3 returns?

-Marcus Thornton: When you're the first second round pick to score at least 37 points in a game since Sherman Douglas did it in 1990, you've got game.  Hornets interim head coach Jeff Bower has done a great job working Thornton into the lineup.  In eight of his last nine games, Thornton has put up scoring nights of 37, 25, 18, 21, 30, 24, 18 and 28.  I think the Hornets have found their shooting guard for the future.

-David West:  On a team being forgotten by most who follow the NBA, West is quietly having yet another solid season.  His scoring and and rebounding is down a tad, but his field goal percentage is up and he's had a slew of monster games recently.  Notably a 40/10 game to lead the Hornets to victory over the Magic a few weeks ago.

I'll never forget the 58 pt. playoff win...

… unfortunately, I do not think the Hornets organization will either, maybe giving them enough extra motivation to win (like our last road game there when Paul took over in the 4th).

I'm going to miss this game tonight

But I’m still expecting a win tonight. J.R. Smith and Andersen should have those chips on their shoulders still.

defense

The Warriors visited the Hornets earlier this week and I ended up watching some of the Bay Area telecast. Holy smokes, what a ridiculous game. The Hornets just barely managed a 135-131 win — no overtime! That was the score after 48 minutes. One of the Warriors, I think it was Morrow, was 6-for-6 on 3’s.

I would like to think that if the Nuggets can just play better defense than the Warriors, they should be able to win tonight.

A win here will get the Nuggets to .500 on the road

of the top 5 teams in the west, Denver is the only team with a sub .500 record on the road.

Tonight’s game will be a golden opportunity to rectify that. And tomorrow’s game another solid chance to become not just an average team on the road, but a winning team, which is something Denver needs to be come the playoffs.

They definitely

need to get their act together on the road in order to make another serious run in the playoffs.

Andrew, how do you manage to constantly put yourself in situations to meet all these famous people?

Almost every other blog entry you drop a name of a different celebrity. You ran into this guy here, stood in the elevator with this celeb there, did shots with Charles Barkley over there.
Maybe I don’t travel enough but why does this kinda stuff never happen to me?
Just curious. :)

As for the game, GO NUGGETS!

I was in Vegas last year during Summer League just by coincidence. I stayed at the Palms (owned by Kings owners – the Maloof brothers). You couldn’t walk 10 feet there without running into some NBA celebrity.

about half a block from the Thomas and Mack, and there were NBA players in all my fav local restaurants during summer league.

I wouldn't call...

…attending summer league games in Vegas (that ANYONE can go to) or happening to be in an elevator with the Big Z in Boston six or so years ago “meeting famous people”. And as far as the Barkley story goes, I worked as a PR assistant and tape logger for Turner Sports when I was in college in Atlanta. So when the NBA All-Star Game came to Denver, I was able to reunite with my old friends from Turner Sports at all their sponsored events, which Barkley was at. Barkley wouldn’t in a million years remember doing a shot with me…

Summer league games

I never thought anyone would come up with a reason I would want to go back to Vegas, but the summer league is tempting. I went once for work, so the trip was free, and it still wasn’t worth the money. Wow, something at Vegas that sounds genuine, enjoyable, and not ridiculously overpriced. Who’da thunk it?

by CancerSucks on Mar 12, 2010 4:40 PM MST up reply actions

meeting famous people is NOT the issue

it is arguing with your girlfriend. it is a huge mistake on your part that you do not allow your grandma in wisconsin to find you a nice jewish girl. right now you could be married with children, living in kenosha, working a regular job and going to temple once a week. but noooo! you have to criss cross the country, watching basketball, doing shots with people who will never remember you AND SPENDING WAAAAY TOO MUCH TIME ON THE INTERNET! get a life.

aaron gray

was traded by chicago to nawlins. he will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. if he plays this could be an audition for next season with the nuggets. cb1 again has a huge advantage inside at the point guard position. the challenge inside along the front line is another step up in terms of talent. melo needs to focus on rebounding. transition, perimeter defense and defending the pick and roll will determine how well denver is really doing without kmart.

Doubt it

He’s only played in, what, 20 games this season? Sounds like a garbage timer. Hopefully the Nuggets can put NOR away early enough that the end-of-the-bench players get some PT, but I wouldn’t count on it seeing as it is a road game.

Posey is out with the flu, as is Peja and CP3

So they have just 8 players in the rotation tonight. THe Nuggets SHOULD be able to exploit that to their advantage.

We need to stop shooting 3's in the second half

How we are even in this game is amazing given the TO’s and 3-pt shooting. This is the perfect game to get back to .500 on the road, gain a game ]on LA, and create space between us and Utah. They only have 8 players! Win this game now!

Sad thing is...

…this is the first of a 4-in-5, and at this rate they’ll burn out the starters for all three of the remaining games…maybe you should pull it in and try to regroup for Memphis and points later, rather than guaranteeing a 1-3 stretch at best?

Nope

This game is their’s if they play tough D down the stretch. The west is way too close to let up in any game.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
