Game 60 Preview & Thread: Nuggets at Suns (7pm MST)

Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns, Mar 1, 2010 7:00 PM MST

Afflalo_mediumHere is what you don't want to have happen ... lose a close, hard-fought game one afternoon and the next night have to play a fast-paced, high-scoring team. Well, the Nuggets will be doing exactly that in a few hours in Phoenix to play the Suns.

Star-divide

Update, I'm an idiot and the game is in Phoenix!

The particulars ...

Records:
Denver:
39-20 (24-5 at home, 14-15 on the road)
Phoenix:
37-24 (22-7 at home, 15-17 on the road)
Denver current streak: Lost 1. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games.
Phoenix current streak: Lost 1. They are 7-3 in their last 10 games.
Injuries:
Denver: Renaldo Balkman
(mid-back strain) is out and his status is listed as day-to-day. Ty Lawson (left shoulder) is doubtful according to the Denver Post. (Credit Beefyswats)
Phoenix: Leandro Barbosa (right wrist) is out.

Opposition's Take: Bright Side of the Sun

So many thoughts running through my head ... let's see if I can make any sense here.

The best way to slow down a fast-paced Suns team? Make them play a close game in San Antonio the day before. The Suns had been riding a 5-game win streak until they left Texas. The Spurs pulled out a 113-110 win over the surging Suns in dramatic fashion.

With nothing but the rim between Richardson and a game-tying basket with 41.8 seconds left, he blew a one-handed dunk on a breakaway as the rest of the Phoenix Suns watched in disbelief, while the San Antonio Spurs savored their good luck in a 113-110 win on Sunday."I don't like to miss dunks, especially in crunch time like that, but it's one of those things that happens," Richardson said. "You can't do anything about it."

A very tough and embarrassing play for Richardson, but it happens to the best of players.

Phoenix has been very similar to the Nuggets this season in regards to their home and away records. The Suns are notoriously good at home and have been this season, but on the road the team is vulnerable, Nugget fans can sympathize.

I think we all know what the Suns want to do ... make the game a controlled, but extended fast-break (led by the best in the business for that style of play with Steve Nash). Phoenix also continues to be like a college team (not a knock) by hitting momentum crushing and lead pushing three-pointers. Amare Stoudemire does most of heavy lifting in the paint and the unorthodox bench scorer, Channing Frye, loves to bury shots from beyond the arc (4.9 attempts per game). I call Frye "unorthodox" because he's a center, but has a sweet stroke.

The last time these teams squared off Phoenix came to Denver and gave the Nuggets a good old fashioned butt kicking. The Suns won the game 109-97 and had six players score in double-figures. I was at this particular contest and the energy the brought was ... well ... they Nuggets forgot to bring any energy. Over the course of an 82-game season you definitely see some stink-bomb games and that contest was definitely one of them.

It'll be interesting to see how the Nuggets rotations work tonight with Lawson expected to sit out. How much burn will Anthony Carter get and what impact can he have on the game? I'm also curious to see if there is any Hollywood hangover from the L.A. loss yesterday and how Melo will respond to what had to be a frustrating day for him. It has got to be a breath of fresh air not to have Ron Artest hounding you, but don't expect Melo to find much breathing room against a suffocating Suns defense. A Suns defense? Yes, Jared Dudley and the constant double-teams could pose a problem for Denver's leading scorer.

We've seen plenty of bounce-back games from Denver this season and we could really use one more tonight.

Lets hope Carter gets about 5 min total of burn. LOL

no excuses

this will be another game cb1 has a huge advantage. nash in his prime was never a decent defender. he still has game on the offensive end but truly shows his age on defense. billups needs to dominate inside and force nash to use energy. taking jump shots makes things easy for him. melo has triple double talent and needs to get in the habit of using it BEFORE the playoffs start. melo passes and rebounds the scoring will take care of itself. it will be important to get the ball inside to kmart and nene early and often to start the game. the key to the game will be execution in the half court offense. making the extra pass will result in easy baskets. phoenix as a team does not have a 24 second attention span on defense. getting into a shoot out with the suns is a huge mistake. melo complaining to the refs will result in fast breaks and open shots on the perimeter for phoenix.

Damn Back to Back games

I hate these type of games. Both teams played yesterday, so I’m sure we as fans will be in for a snooze. All of the starters are gassed and will go out and put up less than stellar preformances. Thanks Stern. Instead of a high octane scoring event, which is both of these teams identities, we get the chopped and screwed version of good basketball.

Nate maybe you have these numbers, but how many of the Nuggets back to backs are against playoff contenders on the 2nd night? I swear it seems, at least to me, that we always have the Suns, Mavs, Blazers, or Boom Boys on the 2nd night. While we usually face the Jazz, Dubs, or (insert scrappy nothing to lose team name here) on the 1st night.

I hope the NBA is locked out, if for no other reason then to reformat the schedule. An added bonus will be Stern’s termination as teh NBA’s head honcho.

Anyways, GO NUGGETS!!!!

back to back not an issue this time

both teams played afternoon games. phoenix does not adjust their time for day light savings time and standard time. this means they are on the same time as the west coast and changing time zones is not an issue. the teams are not getting to the hotel at 3 or 4 o’cock in the morning. they both had a full nights sleep and should be good to go.

I'm not making excuses

I expect the Nuggets to wins every time they take the court. You’d have to agree that both teams are probably tired, and will play like it. It’s like watching the last pick-up game of the night at a Rec center. I’m sayong we as fans are being screwed by the B2B games. We shouldn’t have to pay full ticket price for these games, because we don’t get the best product as a result of the B2B.

The Nuggs do need this win, in the event of a matched record at the end of the regular season. We have the tie breaker over all of the other contenders to date and we need this to keep the 2nd seed home court advantage.

does anyone remember the game last season when the cavs played in phx and the suns were fighting for the last playoff spot and j-rich also had a breakaway dunk in crunch time and tried to pull a 360 and lebron came up from behind to block the shot (granted, lebron hit him on the arm and no foul was called).
so this wasnt the first time this has happened to the former “slam dunk champion”.
just sayin…

Melo's selfish play is becoming a team problem

He absolutely has to make a conscious effort to facilitate team basketball on the offensive end. It’s weird how Melo gets more selfish the worse he plays.

by margabelle on Mar 1, 2010 5:39 PM MST reply actions

I get what you're saying

I really do. But Melo is not a point guard! Never has been, never will be. He’s not some crazy LeBron-style position hybrid either. He is a true small forward and a SCORER. That’s his role, and that’s what we pay him for.

This is not to say he shouldn’t look for the open man when the double team comes or play smart basketball. He should, and more often than not he does. But ya gotta let go of this crazy expectation that he be Steve Nash. It’s Chauncey and Ty’s job to run the offense and facilitate, not Melo’s.

by CraftyB on Mar 1, 2010 6:24 PM MST up reply actions

melo has same issue that mike jordan did with the bulls

mj was a shooting guard not a point guard. both were scorers. both needed to trust their teammates. the sooner melo passes the ball the sooner he can get it back. melo should dominate rebounding at both ends of the court at the small forward position. he found a new way to score this season from the free throw line. he can score off of the offensive glass too. because he gets double and triple teamed somebody has to be open. many people criticize the rest of the nuggets for standing around and not cutting to the basket when melo has the ball. melo can give up the ball and cut to the basket too. he is scoring the hard way. passing and moving without the ball will get melo more points with less shots.

pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow

by nohoops4u on Mar 1, 2010 6:38 PM MST up reply actions

I think both sides of the argument have some merit

1. Melo’s game/role is “selfish.” He’s not going to get 6+ APG. Generally when he gets the ball, he is going to try to score, and clearly that is by Karl’s design as well as Melo’s nature. And his ability to excel in this role is one of the reasons we are good.

2. That said, if he doesn’t have something on a given play , he’s being doubled and/or (like yesterday) he’s not feeling it, he absolutely should look to create more offense for teammates. This isn’t all on him though, it seems to me that it its rare that any of the rest of the guys move at all once he gets the ball in one of his spots. Its not like there are cutters flying by that he’s ignoring. Its hard to create good looks for others when those others aren’t open or even attempting to get open.

by Teekalong on Mar 1, 2010 6:39 PM MST up reply actions

They are like us

Play great at home and can usually sustain enough scoring runs long enough to win. Play like that and it will come down to whoever makes more quick shots. Nugs finally played a good defensive game yesterday and must continue that effort. 20+ assists is a given for the Suns we must try to get close

Yeah, but look at it this way – if he’d followed the typical player trajectory, we’d have gotten his best years when before the team was a real contender and he’d be trending downward right around now. Instead, we’re getting his best when we’re actually in a position to capitalize.

by passtheball on Mar 1, 2010 8:09 PM MST reply actions

At some point, we're gonna have to put a few "message" fouls into opponents

Think KMart putting Dirk into the front row in last year’s playoffs. Teams are just straight up mauling our guys – at some point we need to hit back. Not literally (duh), but a couple enforcer-type fouls a game (Graham seems ideally suited) that straight lay the other teams stars out, just to let em know that if you’re gonna tackle our guys going to the whole, we will reciprocate.

They were feeding him at the beginning of the game and he was dominating them. Then all of sudden we decide to shoot jump shots. The suns do not have an answer for Nene. I do not know what GK sees in Malik Allen

He does not give us anything that Petro does not. I would rather give the PT to a player that can still develop. Not to a player that is already at his peak

OK seriously?!

I left to do some work right when AC was brought in in the 2nd period 37-31 Nuggets. WTF happened?

If the offensive strategy is to let Allen jack up 17 footers

Amare and Nash can stay on the bench

Here's my idea

Play JR at the point and tell him to pass the ball every time he gets it unless there’s no defender looking at him. Put Bulldozer and Sleepyhead Balkman on there because it can’t be any worse than it is now. Put Nene in because who the hell cares and Nene has played semi-decently. Lastly, put Petro at center. Just as an FU towards Melo’s selfishness, Chauncey and KMart’s suckiness, and Afflalo’s brickery. If we lose, we were going to anyway. If we win, then HOORAH

GK is a big reason we lost this game

the rotation he put in the 2Q was freaking horrible. I have no idea why he does not play Joey Graham. Every time Graham plays he has proven he can contribute a lot more then Malik allen and AC. Shit Johan Petro played better in the one game he had minutes then Allen and AC have all year. GK needs to bench some Allen and AC for good and give more playing time to Petro and Graham

Thanks

You guys were missing Lawson and birdman so it was tough since they are the Nuggets best players off the bench. Good luck in the playoffs. I think u guys match up the best with the Lakers who have only one good player off the bench. So as long u keep their starters in check, which is harder said than done, you guys have a good chance against them in the playoffs. Lawson is the X-factor in the playoffs for the Nuggets since they can’t guard quick PGs.

“Sometimes it gets frustrating when we don’t make certain adjustments that we’ve got to make.” I think that is what kills the nuggets the most. Other teams make adjustments and we usually don’t always follow and make adjustments of our own.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
