Can we just play good teams from now on?... (Nuggets/Mavericks recap)

CaptWhen the highlight of the game is John Elway throwing a tight spiral pass to the Nuggets mascot Rocky, you know you've got a blowout on your hands.

Star-divide

Beat the Lakers?  Check.  Spurs?  Check.  Cavaliers?  Check.  Trail Blazers?  Check.  Jazz?  Check.  Magic?  Check.   Hawks?  Check.  Rockets?  Check.  Suns?  Check.

Mavericks?  At last, check.

After being embarrassed at home by a loss to the Mavericks in late December, the Nuggets responded and then some by walloping the boys from Dallas by an astounding 36 points tonight.  I know the Mavericks played late at Golden State last night...but a 36-point loss?  And they're considered by many to be a top-four team in the Western Conference?  Really?!!

What's remarkable about the Nuggets victories against the Lakers, Jazz, Cavaliers, Spurs, Hawks and now Mavericks - all presumed to be among the NBA's "elite" teams - is that the Nuggets have done so minus at least one key player per game.  Tonight's absent player was the suddenly invaluable Kenyon Martin, who sat with tendonitis in his left knee.  But just like no Melo, no problem against the Lakers, Cavaliers and Spurs this was no K-Mart, no problem against the Mavericks.

The View from the Not-So-Cheap-Seats...

...as mentioned above, the highlight of the game was Rocky's continued antics with Denver Broncos legend - and known deity - John Elway.  Elway sat courtside and next to the basket on the Mavericks side of the floor.  Early in the game, Rocky bowed and prayed at Elway's feet a number of times and Elway was clearly embarrassed.  But by the time the fourth quarter rolled around and Elway was loosened up thanks to a few cocktails, Elway was a great sport, signed a football that Rocky dug up and threw Rocky two tight spirals down the length of the floor.  The first pass landed at Rocky's feet, but the second was a clean catch followed by a standing ovation from the crowd.  Kudos to Elway and Rocky for bringing some entertainment to a mostly non-entertaining game.

...Nuggets head coach George Karl's lineup of two centers (Chris Andersen and Johan Petro) combined with three guards (J.R. Smith, Arron Afflalo and Ty Lawson) for a long stretch in the first half was my favorite part of the game.  Karl was basically saying: "Screw it, we're killing these guys tonight so I might as well experiment with something new in the lab."

...it was good to see Carmelo Anthony back, but you could tell he's still not 100% on that bad ankle.  He was hesitant to drive to the hole (hence the zero free throw attempts) but had no problem on his jump shots, evident by his 50% shooting performance.  On NBATV's postgame "NBA Game Time", Chris Webber suggested that Melo continue to sit.  I disagree.  Melo needs to get himself back into game shape and besides, as Melo said in the postgame interview, he's running out of suits to wear!

...Chauncey Billups may have had his most efficient game of the season.  16 points on 6-of-8 shooting (3-of-5 from three-point range), six assists and three steals in just 28 minutes of playing time.

...speaking of efficient games, how about Nene's 8-of-9 shooting game to go with eight rebounds.  And it felt like all of Nene's production came early in the first quarter.

...J.R. Smith's confidence is clearly back which should make 29 NBA teams very nervous right now.

...during an early fourth quarter free throw attempt by one of his teammates (I don't remember who), Chris "Birdman" Andersen was getting "cawed" at incessantly by a few drunk fans behind the basket.  Birdman being Birdman, he couldn't help himself and acknowledged the fans and it got them even more riled up and louder.  A few possessions later when Birdman was at the line, they went at it again and Birdman couldn't keep a straight face as he clanked his free throw off the rim.

...Johan Petro's sneak attack block on Dirk Nowitzki was the non-Elway highlight of the game.  The crowd went nuts when Dirk thought he had Birdman beat, only to have his sideline jumper swatted away by the big Frenchman.

...even though it was a blowout and most fans left halfway through the fourth quarter, Elway stayed until the very end.

Non-Stiff of the Night

-Chris Andersen:  The Birdman had a fabulous game tonight.  Beyond the solid numbers (14 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and a block) his energy was as high as we've seen all season and he wasn't being baited into jumping on head fakes.  Wherever the ball went, Birdman seemed to be nearby.  Clearly, it's all about the new hairdo which must stay for the remainder of the season.

Stiff of the Night

-The Mavericks Energy: I know I sound like a broken record, but back-to-back games matter and tonight's blowout Nuggets win was further proof of this.  Similar to the Lakers body language when they got blown out at Denver on the second of a back-to-back in November, the Mavericks clearly had no interest in playing basketball tonight from the opening tip onward.  Great for the Nuggets in the win column, bad for the fans who got cheated out of their money hoping to witness a competitive game.

First!

I know, b2b and all, but still. Seems like a bit of a statement game to me!

Quite frankly, if it were up to me, I’d just throw in the towel.

Drubbing Dallas

I was hesitant to go to this game because I had fresh memories of being drubbed by Phoenix. I wasn’t expecting Anthony, Billups, Afflalo and Nene to all play. And I wasn’t expecting Martin to sit. Even with Dallas playing last night, I certainly wasn’t expecting a Denver blowout.

I only get the seats that you can pick up for $10 of so six minutes into the first quarter. And by the time I got to my seats in the second quarter the game was over. Blah.

The highlight, though, was clearly the continued good play of the bench. Malik Allen has a nice jump shot and Petro is a lot more athletic than I remember. He still has those bad hands.

The injuries to Denver stars have helped this team, I think, by giving the bench some meaningful playing time and confidence. If Denver can stay healthy and fresh, there is no reason they won’t be able to roll into the playoff winning about 56 games.

Go Nuggets.

I actually thought Petro showed some good hands for a change

(and what a welcome change, if he can keep it up!) I recall a bad pass he caught one handed on the left block, plus the late exchange between him an JR where bad passes by each were overcome by good catches by each. Remember the French Tickler is fairly young, and as younger players tend to do sometimes, he often spazzes out when he gets his limited playing time, making him seem worse than he may actually be. Last night, given some signifigant playing time, he actually looked relaxed and confident. Dude runs the floor like few other bigs, and plays with enthusiasm.

I still say that Petro can be developed, or the Nugs could mine the D-league for a backup big (Dwayne Jones?!?), in order to bolster our chances against the Lakeshow in a series.

Also, Balkman must have really pissed GK off to not see any time in such a blowout. What gives, GK?

by Ski Bum on Feb 10, 2010 8:39 AM MST up reply actions

Petro

While his decent game last night isn’t going to be enough to alleviate my worried about his hands, I definitely agree that Petro could benefit from more playing time. Not a lot. He has a real good stroke for a seven-footer and athleticism to boot.

With the trade deadline coming up, I would much rather see him be developed than a deal be made that disrupts the chemistry of this rolling Nuggets squad.

View from the not so cheap seat that was free courtesy of a friend

Where should I start? This game was in the bag early so I’ve decided to focus on other things…

1. People watching….I’ve never seen so many tall white kids wearing shorts in FEBRUARY! For the love of god guys….put some long pants on. I understand you are proud of your stick-like legs but you’re going to catch a cold (says the 31 year old “kid”)

2. Champ Bailey and Dre Bly were there too. Felt like a festive atmosphere but it took awhile for the crowd to get going.

3. Melo took it easy tonight. He looked like his ankle was still sore (take THAT nay sayers) but I liked how he was efficient and dished out some nice assists.

4. Looked for Andrew….but was stopped by some middle aged woman who thought I looked like one of her nephews. She was clearly drunk….yikes

5. Blue Moon was 7 bucks….are you kidding me?

denver was criticized for not making major moves in the off season

san antonio, dallas and the lakers all made major upgrades to their rosters and denver did nothing. i will never call joey graham’s take down of ron ron in the paint not a major move. artest got the mid level exception and graham signs for a partially guaranteed 1 year deal for 800 thousand. all three of these teams are still trying to make major upgrades before the trade deadline. denver is in a great place right now. the best is yet to come. a league minimum 13 player roster, injuries and 4 players that were not with the team a year ago. if this is as good as it gets, it is pretty damn good. the team can still improve in several ways.

One of the better wins this season, by far

What a game, yet again. It’s like these wins just keep piling up. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself but these are the types of wins that championship caliber teams rack up on a nightly basis, and we seem to be fitting this mold.

Some things I noticed…

I find it to be no coincidence that the night we absolutely play with tons of energy and blow out a great team is the same night George decides to expand his rotation. All of our bench players played wonderful and their production begged for them to see more time in the future, especially Petro. I have always said that if you show confidence in your players they in turn will gain confidence and play better than they really should, as is the case with Petro tonight. When you put this type of player in during garbage time you are showing no confidence in them, and thus, often times you bring out the worse part of their game out instead of the best. But when you insert them into a heated game in which they must produce, they often times rise to the occasion and do just that. Petro, and Allen are not bad players regardless of all the crap I hear about them on this blog. They get this notion due to their lack of playing time, not their actual capabilities. Tonight proved that when trusted, they can contribute to the success of this team. I’m not saying that we should see a 10 man rotation every night, but I have no reason to believe that it would hinder our success, especially after tonight.

Why can’t Nene play like he did tonight for 82 games out of the season? I just don’t understand it. What I saw out there was a bonafide All-Star. His post moves were tenacious, his dunks emphatic, his finishes conclusive. And the funny thing about all this, was that he seemed to do it with ease, like he has been doing it for years. Nene is capable of doing some great things in this league. I just hope he figures out his own potential and realizes that he can get his and still contribute positively to the success of this team

JR is finally back. I don’t know what happened to him at the beginning of the season but he’s officially stepped it up. This is the player we have all come to love. The guy who we have heard numerous times has as much potential as anybody in the game. He is playing smarter, more sound and is taking calculated shots. If he continues this type of play, all I have to say is watch out Kobe Bryant.

Good game

I think JR got in trouble and Chauncey got to him, and it also appears that George and JR now speak, which has to be a positive thing, right? Anyway, good for JR. When he plays well, the Nuggets are a very, very tough team.

Nice efficient game. Dallas is soft.

Best case scenario

In my opinion the Nuggets were rewarded for maintaining a high level of play in Melo’s absence. The supporting cast has stepped up to the point where someone will answer the call. The Nuggets had trouble winning like that earlier in the year and guys are contributing now in a way that forces GK’s hand to to extending the rotation. Kenyon rested, Afflalo and Chauncey were leaned on for 1 and a half quarters before it became an exhibition game. Melo didn’t have to do too much thanks to the efficient level of play we have been at. Proud of this team right now and the way they are fighting regardless of circumstance. Also – Don’t mess with the Johan. PETRO SMASH

Couldn’t agree more. When guys go down with injuries, its a chance for other players to step up. Guys like Johan, Malik and Joey showed, with time, they can get better and help the team win.
I hope Karl can trust these guys to play a few minutes when everyone is back healthy.
Don’t think the Nuggets need to make a trade before the deadline. Besides, they really have nobody to give up to get anybody decent.
Overall, good win for the Nuggets. Great to see Melo and Chauncey on the court together.

Since I Love the Broncos

and always have and always will, perhaps I should love the Nuggets more than the Mavericks and Jazz. I guess this requires some explanation as to why I don’t so here goes. As a life-long Utahn, I was naturally drawn to the Jazz for the same reason I was drawn to the Broncos. They were the best option and aired on television in the SLC market every game night of the NBA season. Of course, the Broncos were an easy passion because I loved those orange uniforms and John Elway always made the boring Sundays for a young Mormon boy like me when I watched them on KUTV-Channel 2 out of Salt Lake City. The Broncos were a natural fit. As for the Mavs, I always loved the old M cowboy hat logo and the fact that Brad Davis shared my name and was a really good player. As I served my mission in Texas, the only people that didn’t treat me like crap (true story regrettably) were Mavs fans so my attachment to the team only grew. However, perhaps I should begin cheering for the Nuggets if my Mavs put up such a crummy performance against a team that will represent the West in the NBA Finals. If the Nuggets rep the West, you can bet I’ll cheer for the Nuggies with comparable passion that I show on autumn Sundays for the orange and blue. As for the Mavs, come on show me something. Give me a reason to remain loyal. Again, the Broncos are the only team I’ll immutably cheer for, even the Jazz have vexed me from time to time.

I couldnt agree more..

I grew up in western New York. The first sport I really started watching was Football. And although there are several teams to choose from in NY, I was drawn to denver. I was enthralled by John Elway and his larger than life stature, and his ability more so than almost any other NFL player ever to say “i got this” and take his team to victory. So when i started getting involved in other sports, denver teams had a inside shot already. And so I fell inlove with the high scoring, not much defense, eclectic collective known as the nuggets. From Mount Mutumbo, to my favorite OCD athelete Rauf (first nuggets jersey i ever owned) to the Phonz, and RR, to name a few. And just like the broncos, i have kept the faith with them though the good and the bad (though the broncos sure are testing me at this time). I am proud to be a nuggets fan, and broncos fan, and avs fan. As for baseball, i played it, like watching it live, but just cant muster enough energy to like any team, but sure why not go rockies.. lol. And as a side note I got to spend 3 days in denver a few years back, and it is a perfect fit for the teams. One of the few cities I would choose to live in. Lets go nuggs! in the name of the father, the son, and the holy Elway.

Can Johan do it again?

Knee tendinitis is a nagging injury. K-mart’s likely been playing with it for awhile. Given it’s K-marts knees my guess is Nuggets brass decided to let Kenyon rest the knee for a solid two weeks and he won’t play tomorrow against SA (again, just guessing here). If so Johan has earned a second night of extended time. If he can repeat his performance against the likes of Tim Duncan then I think George will have to consider giving him some pt regularly.

How can this team transition from being a give Melo the ball team...

while everyone stands around?

Personally, I have gotten used to watching the non-Melo Nuggets who are moving around, passing, and looking for the open man.

I think the Nuggets have a tremendous opportunity here. They should depend on Melo less for 30 a game and depend on Melo more to facilitate assists to the other damn talented members of this team. If this happens, when Melo hits his shots, it will hurt the opposition.

I know what I am trying to say. I am not really sure I am saying it well. I think we need Melo’s 30 less and the team more – as a general rule.

by spokenwar on Feb 10, 2010 7:37 AM MST reply actions

exactly right

I’d like to see Melo’s shots in the 12 – 15 range, usually. That being said JR is also going for several tough shots per game that he has been making recently but probably won’t in the playoffs so I’d like to see those slow down, (except for end of shot clock situations.)

by NugzD on Feb 10, 2010 7:51 AM MST up reply actions

Melo's 30 will come to him

I agree we don’t need it every night, but it’s a damn good insurance policy to have. If the Nugget coaches can figure out a happy median of Melo’s direct production and his affect on other’s production the team will become officially untouchable.

by Joelsopinion on Feb 10, 2010 8:59 AM MST up reply actions

I thought he played great last night.

He had 3 assists in the first 12 minutes (and would have had 3 more were it not for fouls). I like when he’s looking for his teammates because it really opens the floor up for everyone, including himself.

by NuggBuckets on Feb 10, 2010 9:02 AM MST up reply actions

But wouldn't the Nuggs be a much better team with less Melo?

“Nene inbounds the ball to Carmelo Anthony. Melo brings the ball down the left side of court. The other 4 players go to the right side. The other players stand around. Melo shoots, he…”

by spokenwar on Feb 10, 2010 9:22 AM MST up reply actions

Not less Melo, just a

different type of production from Melo. It’s not his fault 4 other players stand around. He’s more than capable of passing to a cutter, or Nene in the post. The other players have to figure out how to maximize their time on the court with Melo, i.e. more slashing in and out of passing lanes, more post up from the Bigs, more offensive put backs and rebounds.
Make no mistake he is our offensive workhorse. He’s the reason we fans endured that horrible 17 win season. I want to see Melo play, all out, every night. I agree we could stand to see less 38 shot attempts per game from Melo. But if the other players were using Melo’s other offensive talents to the full, he wouldn’t jack up 38 shots a game.

by Joelsopinion on Feb 10, 2010 9:42 AM MST up reply actions

I’m sick of people faulting Melo for the fact that the team sometimes doesn’t cut to the hole a lot. I don’t if you guys watched the drubbing by OKC when Denver recently played them, but Melo didn’t play and the Nuggets were pretty good at not passing and standing around that game.

To no one inparticular: Stop. Blaming. Melo.

I am not blaming Melo...

I guess I am questioning the culture of the team – OR the NEW culture of the team. In the last 8 games a new culture has developed. My point is ball teams can grow; change; and become better. I think this is a better team. Would AA have had the opportunity to show us the 3 if Melo had been on the floor?

SO – how do you integrate the new with the old to beat the damn Lakers and win the championship? I see an opportunity here, but things have to change.

by spokenwar on Feb 10, 2010 11:22 AM MST up reply actions

One more thing...

This is a team with so many damn weapons it ain’t even funny. If you are an opposing coaching staff, where do you start? BUT these weapons need the ball. Nene doesn’t get 21 without the ball.

by spokenwar on Feb 10, 2010 11:27 AM MST up reply actions

I hear ya man

I think it’s all mental. When Melo was out the other guys all remembered that at one point they were the best player on a team and they all reverted to playing like it. If they can all bring their individual swagger to any given game WATCHOUT!

Like you said we have tonsof weapons. And as pointed out last night, if you double team Melo then AA, JR,CB will kill you from the arc. Or Nene, K-Mart, Bird, Graham, and even Allen and Petro will make you pay inside. And like Jon Rambo, one can never have enough guns.

by Joelsopinion on Feb 10, 2010 11:52 AM MST up reply actions

same deal as mike jordan

he had to learn to trust his teammates. jordan was most effective when he got other players involved in the offense first. it becomes a matter of pick your poison. melo forces the other team to commit one and or two players to defend him. that is the reason for the losses to phoenix and ok city. melo needs to do his part by not waiting and moving the ball. when he hesitates it gives the defense a chance to rotate.

Lawson is just great to have on the floor.

His drives are so cool and yeah when he finishes with a basket ( and as usual no foul call ) I love the expression he has.

Un lettre a Johan

Johan, Je suis tres desoler. Tu n’est pas un STIFF…pas vraiment. Tu a montre a tous, especiallment moi meme, que tu peut contribuer effectivment si tu a l’opportunitie a fair ca. Continuer le bon travaille et effort.

Johan played very well tonight given his minutes. I didn’t see him miss a pass or drop a rebound either. I really hope that that is what we can expect from here on out from the French Tickler. He was only credited with 5 boards though. I counted at least six. Dude could have had a double if he had hustled a bit more down the stretch. But then again we were up by 30+ points.

Every active Nugget scored! AC shot 50%! Johan had a meaningful block! I still think the Broncos should sign Joey as a tight end, or line backer. I really hope Karl keeps an expanded rotation for a few stretches of the season, and not just garbage time. Something is clicking in that Nugget locker room, and I likey.

by Joelsopinion on Feb 10, 2010 8:55 AM MST reply actions

The best part about Elway at the game.

He signed the football for Rocky, then completed the (2nd) pass. But the BEST part, was that then Rocky chucked that autographed football into the stands. Too bad Rocky couldn’t have thrown it up to my seats in the nosebleed….

For the$$$

They were decent seats huh?

by JR2 on Feb 10, 2010 1:20 PM MST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, I had thanked you on the game-thread article, but you must have missed it.

So thanks again for the tickets. Honestly I don’t think there is a “bad” seat in Pepsi Center. I’ve sat from 8 rows away from the floor to the upperdeck-corner-way-in-the-back seats and have enjoyed all of them. The best part about those seats JR2, is that I was able to put my feet up on the railing in front.
For $55 (40 for the tickets, 10 for parking, 5 for popcorn) my wife and I had a great night out! Plus I won a #15 t-shirt for my wife at the Altitute wheel!

did anyone catch Johan's post game interview?

dude was so happy, i was happy for him. he said that for some reason, he wasnt nervous tonight and just played. asked how it felt to have the crowd give him an ovation..“im not gonna lie to you, it felt good.”

hopefully the next time he gets PT (against the spurs?) hes not nervous again and it continues to build his confidence.

great win, lets get 1 more and then get some rest.

For those of us not at the game . . .

to see the Rocky and Elway show, seeing Petro play extended minutes was the highlight of the game. His game still has rough edges, but I’d never seen him play so fluidly before. And there is no doubt that this guy can get up and down the court. Hopefully his game will continue to develop.

by JTR on Feb 10, 2010 11:30 AM MST up reply actions

he had a lot to be happy about...

first of all, he defended without committing a shitload of fouls (2 in 22 minutes). second he seemed controlled (calm) and it showed when he scored. i would like to know if this was because he had been working hard at practice readying himself for an opportunity to play.

Anyone catch 'Melo yell at AA?

Last night Melo and Arron were both jumping for a defensive reboud and I heard Melo yell, “I got it” and after he had it secured he yelled at AA, “Get the Fuck out the way!”. Is this just normal game intensity or indicative of Mel’s frustration and/or jealousy toward AA?

by congressparkligers on Feb 10, 2010 12:02 PM MST reply actions

I'd chalk that up to game intensity.

by 808inDenver on Feb 10, 2010 5:42 PM MST up reply actions

Hard to say

But the bottom line is dudes are way to concerned with their numbers these days. It’s pathetic how they won’t fight opposing team’s players for meaningful boards under the hoop yet they will knock the shit out of their own teammates for garbage boards.

"Jive turkey is a little over the line my man!"

by GoldenNugget on Feb 10, 2010 4:55 PM MST up reply actions

the point has been made that

it is not a coincidence that Melo’s lowest scoring average of his career (last season) coincided with the great run to the Western Conference Finals. I think Melo averaged somewhere between 22-24ppg (too lazy to look it up). but don’t forget that in the playoffs, didn’t Melo have like 6 or 7 straight games of 30+ points. We don’t need Melo to lower his scoring average. We just need him to be more efficient. And if Melo tries to beat another double team, I might strangle somebody. We don’t have Dahntay anymore; no one on the floor is an offensive liability. Even birdman has shown that he can be trusted (albeit, slightly) to take an OPEN 8-10 foot jump shot. I’d rather have bird/kenyon taking that shot than have Melo shoot an against-the-grain kobe-esque baseline fadeaway.

by jb22 on Feb 10, 2010 12:38 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

Eight games has made for a different team...

Will Melo run down the court while the other players stand around waiting for him to shoot, or will the Nuggets grow-change-work into something new?

by spokenwar on Feb 10, 2010 3:58 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly

It’s not that Melo shouldn’t take as many shots as he does, he just needs to be efficient.

"Jive turkey is a little over the line my man!"

by GoldenNugget on Feb 10, 2010 4:57 PM MST up reply actions

Trade Bait?

As I watched Petro, Allen, and Graham run around out there, even with Kmart out and a hurting Melo/CB1, I couldn’t help but wonder if they were being trotted out so that their trade values might increase? It’s hard for opposing teams to get a feel for a guy unless they see him in action and getting real playing time vs. garbage minutes . Petro’s solid game last night probably helped out his trade value, which is a good thing if the Nugs hope to make a trade before the deadline. Houston did the same thing with T-Mac earlier this season before he was banished. Maybe the Front Office had something to do with the rotations last night?

Good win for the Nugs last night.

by AlexRides on Feb 10, 2010 1:23 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

Great point Alex.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough if the increased minutes were for the benefit of the Nuggets or the benefit of another NBA team … as we all know the package of Petro, Graham and Allen make up Denver’s best cheap trade idea.

Denver Stiffs.com: Defending the sovereignty of Nuggets Nation.

by Nate Timmons on Feb 10, 2010 1:26 PM MST up reply actions

Same thought I had

When Melo was out for what some of us thought was too long. Was Graham being showcased? I think last night was more of a science experiment than anything else. The Mavs mailed it in, still Petro being inserted THAT early I thought Nene was hurtin’ or something.

by Joelsopinion on Feb 10, 2010 1:38 PM MST up reply actions

Good point

It was weird how Petro, Allen and Grahm hardly ever play then all of a sudden when the trade deadline approaches they get 20 minutes a piece.

"Jive turkey is a little over the line my man!"

I felt vindicated after that game

After all I did write the “Unleash The French Tickler” fanpost in January and I’m glad to see Petro did not embarrass me. I really hope he gets some extended minutes Thursday against the Spurs

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
