Game 52 Preview & Thread: Mavericks at Nuggets (7pm MST)
Dallas Mavericks at Denver Nuggets, Feb 9, 2010 7:00 PM MST
It's too bad the NBA All-Star break doesn't take place a week or two earlier, because the banged up Nuggets are sorely in need of some rest and recuperation right now.
Remember the good old days when the Super Bowl was played on the last weekend of January rather than the first weekend of February? This is important because the NBA All-Star break - not wanting to conflict with the Super Bowl - seems to be taking place later and later each year. The halfway mark of an NBA season is after 41 games played, and yet the Nuggets will have played 53 games before the All-Star break this season. Not only is this late break unfortunate for banged up teams like the Nuggets, but it hurts the All-Star Game itself as a number of participants might not be able to play, including the Nuggets own Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups.
Among the NBA's elite teams, are any as battered and bruised as our Nuggets right now? Starters Melo, Billups and Arron Afflalo all have bad ankles and will be game-time decisions against the Mavericks on Tuesday night. Starting center Nene, also a game-time decision, supposedly can't run thanks to an injured foot. And J.R. Smith "tweeted" today that his sore shoulder might need to be X-ray'd. When the previously oft-injured Kenyon Martin is your only guaranteed starter on a nightly basis, you know something is wrong.
Does this mean the Nuggets will trot out a lineup of Ty Lawson at point guard, Anthony Carter at shooting guard, Joey Graham at small forward, K-Mart at power forward and Chris Andersen at center against one of the Western Conference's better teams? In fact, knowing how Nuggets head coach George Karl doesn't like to disrupt the rhythm of his "rotation," I suspect Johan Petro will start if Nene can't play, meaning the Birdman will fill in off the bench alongside Malik Allen. I'm also assuming that even if the Nuggets only go with eight players against the Mavericks, Renaldo Balkman will still get DNP-CD'd for the 30th consecutive game. But maybe - just maybe - the Nuggets health situation is so dire that Karl will let Balkman out of the doghouse, albeit briefly.
While a lineup of Lawson, Carter, Graham, K-Mart and Andersen probably wouldn't beat any NBA team (ok, they could take the Nets...no problem), they certainly aren't beating the fourth-seeded Dallas Mavericks, in spite of that team's recent struggles and the fact that they'll be playing the second of a back-to-back. (On a side note, when did it become mandatory for all Nuggets home opponents to be playing the second of a back-to-back?) The Mavericks, once such a hot team that it was presumed that their coach - Rick Carlisle - would coach the All-Stars in his hometown, have cooled off considerably since beating the Nuggets at Pepsi Center on December 27th. From that point forward, the Mavericks have basically been playing .500 ball, losing 10 times in 19 tries, including embarrassing losses to the Timberwolves, injury-depleted Trail Blazers and 76ers (hey, kind of like the Nuggets!...sorry, I had to).
But without knowing which Nugget players will actually dress on Tuesday night it's hard to forecast how they'll fair against a deep and talented, if suddenly underachieving, Dallas Mavericks team. That said, we can still scout the opposition...
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS
Mavericks Stiffs
-Josh Howard: Even though he hasn't turned 30 yet, Howard has been on the decline for two consecutive seasons. Once an All-Star caliber player, Howard is shooting a career low 39.3% from the field to go along with a career low 3.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. The Mavericks have been able to weather Howard's poor production thanks to the addition of Shawn Marion, but Howard - whose contract is a team option for next season - may have played himself out of a Mavericks jersey.
-Erick Dampier: Dampier and his $10.1 million salary (which goes up to $13.1 million next season) is an easy target for anyone's Stiff List. In fact, you can trace much of the Mavericks struggles straight to Dampier who has only grabbed double-digit rebounds three times since the Mavericks bested the Nuggets back in December.
-Tim Thomas: A colossal waste of a roster spot, Thomas isn't doing much better than Balkman in the DNP-CD category. Give Thomas credit, though; he's milked a decent outside jump shot combined with a lazy (understatement) work ethic into a 13-year NBA career that's paid him over $90 million. The NBA: Where the Guaranteed Contract Ruins Everything.
Mavericks Non-Stiffs
-Dirk Nowitzki: Nowitzki is such a supremely great player that he's taken for granted. Starting in all but two games this season, Nowitzki has scored less than 20 points just nine times, and one of those games he was pulled early due to injury. Those of us who saw Nowitzki close up in the playoffs last season know exactly how dangerous Dirk is...as long as he doesn't have cougars trying to extort him on the side.
-Jason Kidd: I've always labeled Kidd as "The Poor Man's Fat Lever" but you have to hand it to the guy; at almost 37 years old his production remains on par with his last three seasons. Kidd is currently dishing out more than nine assists, pulling down over five rebounds and stealing the ball almost twice per game. At this point in his career, he's just padding his Hall of Fame resume.
-Shawn Marion: Marion has looked flabby and out of shape all season long, and yet he's been instrumental to the Mavericks surprising success this season. Marion remains a generalist - he'll score a few points, grab a few rebounds, dish out a few assists, play stingy defense and throw in a block and steal per game for good measure. When we last saw Marion he frustrated Melo into an atrocious 5-of-19 shooting night and even fouled out after being pestered by Marion all night. Maybe the Mavericks aren't the team Melo should come back against, after all...

I have a gut feeling that both Melo and Chauncey will play…

I read
Melo and CB are both probable. Birdman is officially off the injury report, AA is hurtin and could be out and Nene is day to day. If I had to guess I’d say Melo and CB are playing and Nene and AA sit. IDK about JR though.

I think....JR would probably play
he didn’t look too bad in the Utah game….and he supposedly injured himself against the lakers.

JR's shoulder can't be that serious
I have separated my AC joint which is an injury that doesn’t even require surgery, and I couldn’t mome my arm, let alone shoot a basketball. AC separation is pretty common in shoulders, but I’m tellin you… it was more painful than my torn PCL, Meniscus, MCL- 4 concussion, 26 total stiches and 3 cracked ribs.
In short… I bet JR only has a sprain which he should play in the Dallas and SA games and be able to fully recover over break… I hope haha!

Travel Ice Hockey for 5 years my man. My separated AC joint was from being checked by a guy that out weighed me by about 80 pounds in thto the boards. The MCL, PCL and Meniscus were all one injury… Just took a step awkward on the ice and bent it the wrong way with all my weight and tore all that shit. Cracked ribs was from a shot (I was a Ryan Smyth type player… always pissin the goalie off in front of the net), All 4 concussions were just from hits… and my 26 stitches came from my lip twice ( I have a GK scar except mines on the right side) and my chin three times as well as in my mouth when I screwed up my gums from a fght in Canada. Hockey is brutal man… And I still get shit from football players that their sport is rougher hahaha

Wow!
Basketball only left me with a bad ankle and knee (both right), chipped tooth, and occasional back spasms. I guess i can’t complain anymore…No wait I had a gun pulled on me too in a pick up game at Silverman Park in Montbello, no wounds from that one however.

Jeez!
Sounds like you whitnessed a Ron Artest accident haha. I did deveope chronic back pain from hockey as well. I separated both hips in my final season on my Varsity hockey team in high school. It made my hips and hammies 10 times tighter than before and lead to chronic back pain. It ain’t fun but I don’t regret one minute on the ice. I got to seesome cool places.. Chicago, Dallas, Rochester NY, Buffalo NY, Ontario, Toronto, San Jose and Boston.

Yea
Closest thing I have had to that is a drunk Canadian dad in a game we played against this team from Ontario. The rink we played at sold bottled beer and he got pissed cuz one of our players hit his kid so he threw his bottle at our kid on the ice. Not as bad as having a gun pulled on you by crips though. Did they lose money or just lose in general?

They were drunk
so of course every shot looks like it went in to them. No money exchanged hands because I don’t believe in gambling with unreasonable people who have guns. it’s a shame that kids couldn’t enjoy the Parks and Recreation system to the full. I’m sure that guy is either in jail or sitting on his mom’s front steps with a 40oz.

I think Bird should start
If Nene isn’t playing. Why would you start a player who almost never plays over a guy who’s starting to heat up? Knowing Karl though…..
Bird is better off the bench
Besides he is still playing banged up himself. Let the frenchman get his stone hands dirty.
Cougar?
I don’t know what picture you were lookin at Andrew, that chick was not a cougar. More like an old, tattered, wreck of a lioness, or something. I’m with jpage though, Melo and Chauncey will def play.
What's the latest on that story anyways?
Wasn’t she pregnant with Dirk’s baby? Was she still prosecuted and in jail, or is she out? Should TMZ be on the blogroll?
This is purely speculation - or perhaps just poor memory
but I thought that she was preggos with dirk’s baby when she went to jail. Then in jail they found out that she wasn’t really pregnant at all and was just playing Dirk.
Either way, that chick was a dirtbag.
Wow the Spurs are junk, losing to the Lakers who didn't have Kobe
and people thought they were going to be number 2 in the West…idiot espn analyists. But Kobe sitting this one out but not our game sure shows who the Lakers really believe is their biggest threat(and rightfully so). Looking forward to the game tomorrow(or today now), hopefully Melo is a go and we put the Mavs another game back. Oh the Mavs played at GS tonight as well and everyone says the West to Mountain time zone back to back is the toughest, kick their ass!
March 14, 2010: The great one returns!
After watching the Laker game...
… I thought the Lakers would benefit from sitting Kobe so they learned to play without him. I bet the Lakers will be tougher after the all-star break.
i wonder what kind of dunk ac throws down this game?

Renaldo Balkman...
I totally forgot to mention this, but Balkman didn’t make the trip to L.A. or to Utah with the team because of back spasms. There was some Twitter conversation back-and-forth between Balkman and J.R. Smith talking about Balkman’s sore back.
Balkman is now on the official injury report and is listed as OUT for tonight’s game with the back spasms.
You can see the whole laundry list of injuries here.
Even Kenyon Martin is listed with left knee tendinitis.

CBS Sports reporting the Nuggs and Knicks looking at Camby:
Team executives differ widely in their assessment Marcus Camby’s availability, with some convinced Camby’s gone and others equally convinced he’s going nowhere. The truth is somewhere in between. A person familiar with the Clippers’ internal discussions said the team would move Camby and his $7.65 million contract only in a deal that would yield a significant player who could help them next season – or the cap space to sign one. The Clips are a small deal away from clearing the $15-$16 million necessary to sign a max player. If they can’t improve their 2010-11 position dramatically, Camby stays. Two of Camby’s former teams, the Nuggets and Knicks, are intrigued by the possibility of bringing him back for an encore.

It is when the Nuggets don’t play defense while their center gets the Defensive Man of the Year accolade. We have tried this Nuggets Nation. Didn’t work then.
Ain’t gonna work now.
wat?
I cannot imagine that Camby would even remotely consider a return to the Nuggs. I mean we did rather unceremoniously kick the guy to the curb.

Unless if the Yankees secretly signed him to a 8 yr, 70 million dollar contract to warm the bench and/or ballboy.

Balkman, Melo, J.R.
As I have seen from some of the rest of the commenters, Balkman is out with back spasms, melo has vowed to play, and J.R. says he doesn’t hurt that bad and should be out there. Afflalo is a warrior too and says despite his bad sprain he is giving it a go. The only Nugget I feel should rest and probably will is Nene. He has played every game this season and deserves a rest heading into the break. It also sounds like his foot injury could be troublesome if not addressed.

GK wouldn’t possibly start Malik Allen against Dirk… right? As much as I’d like to see Graham and Melo start I’m guessing Allen is the guy. Ugh, this is almost worse than not having Melo.
Allen will let Nowitzki score 200

left knee tenderitis is the same as birdman had earlier this season. It in itself isn’t too bad, but it is a chronic, re-occuring injury that gets worse and worse over time if proper rest is not achieved.

Between that move of JR's...
…and Melo’s jab-step jumper, we’ve got two players with un-guardable shots.
Speed demon at it again!

He's definitely showing some skill out there

It should be Dallas is on a back to back
Nuggets should step on their throats now and get them totally discouraged

nugs are unbeatable when they play like this
This 5
Should be the starting 5 when we are sans kmart

yeah i agree
the nugs shooting is really hot tonight. reminds me of the 2nd half of the lakers game.

LOL that was Dre Bly with Champ courtside.

Hello MHR homie!
I thought that was Dre… unfortunately he’s one of my least favorite Broncos from the recent past haha.
Ah Dre got a bad
rap in denver. He is not as bad as most of you people think. He looked bad because our oline could never get any pressure which gave the QBs forever to throw. I do not care who you are you can not cover someone for that long
by gnarlybroncodude on Feb 9, 2010 8:19 PM MST up reply actions
It wasn't all on him
But he always seemed to give up the backbreaker. And that stunt he pulled with the Niners against the Falcons was beyond the pale…

and has, he seems to get what’s good enough to win, sure would be great if he plays like that every game but we still win when he gets 14 and 7.

good to see Melo with 4 assists.
i was curious to see how well he’d integrate back into the offense upon his return.
Petro played good so far tonight
His Defense was impressive. He does not need to come in and score. If he can come in and play 10-15 minutes and play quality D we may not need another big

March 14, 2010: The great one returns!
I like reading the other game threads. Ours is always “preaching to the choir” type stuff for me. I hopped over there and saw “MELO IS A BITCH” and replied “Classy” and got blasted (rightfully.) I’m probably not built for this sort of stuff…
Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.
We have 27 rebounds at half

Just got home, there’s nothing like seeing the Nuggets with a 26-pt lead at halftime…

OK now can we please beat the garbage Spurs Thursday
and head into the break with a nice little 2 game streak and a 36-17 record.

I wonder
Where the change suddenly came from? It’s like he’s a changed player. The Bird we all knew he was capable of.
Maybe his wife got tired of it and threw his stuff in the garbage.
It's crazy. Maybe his knees feel better?

it has definitely become an 8 1/2 man rotation
Joey Graham has proved that. He can come in when the Nuggs are up by like 12-15 points ish, where its too close to put in Doomsday, but you don’t want Melo tiring himself out
i kind of like seeing AC come in when we're way up in the 4th.
he’s all rec league and that’s what those blow-out quarters look like to me.
yea thats good to see.
nene will need to be a major factor in the playoffs. he has a habit of disappearing against excellent competition so hopefully he keeps his confidence high
Awesome win
(even if it was cheapened ever so slightly by the whole back-to-back flying-to-Denver thing)
On Petro:
He still has a looong way to go, but we all know that. This was a great confidence boost for the guy, hopefully it will translate into future success. If Petro can put in 5ish minutes in blowouts and continue to play solid basketball, he might crack a spot in the rotation.
Petro joining the rotation is perhaps the best possible thing that can happen outside a major trade…not only does he rest Nene/Bird/KMart, but he also gets in-game training that can help him become a contributor for years to come.
But I’m getting way ahead of myself. For now, let’s see Petro put up another 10/5 night or two.
Not only did every Nugget that played score
but everybody that played also got at least 1 rebound. That’s well rounded basketball
Petro deserves more playing time
He needs to play against teams with no quality bigs so he can refine his game and build some confidence in a real game. I would like to see him against SA for like 10-15 minutes. He had his best game as a nugget by far tonight. Showed some good touch on the ball around the basket and shoots good FT for a 7 footer. Not saying he should start but he needs more time. If he can play like this on a nightly basis we do not need to trade for anyone
by gnarlybroncodude on Feb 9, 2010 9:30 PM MST reply actions
not to rain on his parade
but you can clearly see that Petro needs to become nastier down low. I wouldn’t put him in there against a guy like, oh i don’t know Joakim Noah.
I totally agree with that
towards the end of the game he was around the 3 point line way to much. I know they were trying to roll him to the basket but I would like to see him with his back to the basket because he showed a good turn around jump hook tonight. He is not a finished product but he has improved by leaps and bounds since he came to denver
by gnarlybroncodude on Feb 9, 2010 9:33 PM MST up reply actions
Petro is like a box of chocolates
You never know what you’re going to get unless you play him
It seemed to me like Nene was setting some good screens for Billups tonight
Anybody else notice this? They seem to be getting pretty dialed in.
Impressive night when
you score 127 points and win by 36 and your leading scorer is only at 21 points. We also collected 47 Rebounds and 28 Assist. A very good all around game
by gnarlybroncodude on Feb 9, 2010 9:34 PM MST reply actions
One more point the
Defense was stellar tonight. Most teams that come in on back to backs at least keep up with us in the first half and then fade in the second. The D tonight shut them down from the start

Trolling
I agree with one of the Mav’s posters that this game was a “scheduling loss.” Makes you wonder why the league can’t schedule HUGE games like this where both teams are on a B2B or on some sort of level playing field. I suspect that it is more difficult than it seems. But I digress…
There is a photo-shopped picture of JR on the Mav’s game thread that is absolutely ridiculous verging on KKK propaganda. (It’s a Tupac photo with JR’s head pasted on) The “chop his head off” bit is shocking in – at least – how nobody admonishes it. Which leads me to a simple question: Why the Hell is it SO taboo to troll and blast these dumb motherfuckers for their hillbilly BS? I don’t fancy myself the “Blog Police” or anything but it also doesn’t sit well with me letting some of the shit pass that most of us just ignore. Do I “troll” at my own peril or do we pick a fight with other blogs over crap like this?

Thank you
JR is probably a dickhead (like most everybody here, there and everywhere believes) but my gut tells me he’s a decent, focused young man who doesn’t deserve this sort of thing. I think of my boys when I think of young men like JR and Melo and I just don’t think they can be defended enough in terms of things like this. Bash their game all you want. THAT is fair game. Otherwise, step carefully as we are all just trying to do our jobs and separate when that damn 5pm whistle blows…

I don't see any reason to troll
I totally agree that opposing teams’ posters can be complete idiots, but think of it this way: you wouldn’t want another team’s fans coming over here and acting up, especially if it was after a loss as ugly as tonight’s and they were taking it pretty hard.
I saw the photoshopped JR pic…classless. But then again, it’s their blog and they can do what they want with it, everyone has different standards.
Alternatively, for something really obnoxious or offensive, you can always flag and hope the mods on that blog aren’t as stupid
by Uh on Feb 9, 2010 10:13 PM MST up reply actions
I joined the blog to flag the picture
accidently rec’ced it, then unrec’ced it after I noticed my mistake, saw the other commenters talking about how funny that picture was, realized that flagging that photo was a lost cause and got the hell out of Dodge.
I’m afraid that Thuggets has become the new N word.
Maybe we can get Nate or Andrew to email their mods?
I think that the mods would respect them more than us “trolls” trying to let them know about it and the view that others have about their blog.

The Mavs bloggers are trying to cover up their own insecurities
by calling the Nugs thuggets all the time and doing stuff like that. When in reality they are the one’s acting like complete goons and thugs, pretty sad afair over there. Happy the stiffs doesn’t stoop to that low.

kmart talked about
how they come by his house in the off season. he has a house in texas where he is from. consider the source. mark cuban runs his big mouth at kmart’s mother. the dallas fans go off on the families of the nuggets players. desperate people do and say desperate things. once dirk retires dallas will no longer have a team. can you say SEATTLE MAVERICKS?
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
