Game 59 Preview & Thread: Nuggets at Lakers (1:30pm MST)

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers, Feb 28, 2010 1:30 PM MST

64051_nuggets_lakers_basketball_medium_mediumThe Nuggets couldn't possibly beat the Lakers for the third straight time on Sunday, could they?

Star-divide

LOS ANGELES - Oh, how times have changed for Denver Nuggets basketball.

I remember when the Nuggets faced the Seattle Supersonics in Game 5 of the 1994 playoffs first round, making their first non-cable national TV appearance in something like five years, NBC didn't even have the Nuggets current logo available to place outside the Nuggets locker room for the interview coverage.

16 years later, when the Nuggets play the Los Angeles Lakers today they'll be appearing in their 16th nationally televised game and their third on ABC.  The Nuggets, rightfully so, have become a national TV draw...especially against the Lakers...akin to the Sacramento Kings teams of about seven years ago.

Not that I have to tell Nuggets fans this, but Nuggets/Lakers games have become great theater.  After losing eight straight to David Stern's preferred franchise from 2006 through 2008, the Nuggets got the monkey off their backs with a confident, albeit sloppy, 90-79 victory at Pepsi Center exactly one year and a day ago.  Lakers head coach Phil Jackson called it a "garbage game", and from that point forward the Nuggets stopped playing with fear against Kobe Bryant and his entourage.  Including last season's hard fought Western Conference Finals (sans an embarrassing Game 6 for Denver), the Nuggets are 4-5 against the Lakers since last February.  And this season, we've seen the Nuggets completely dismantle a tired and weary Lakers team playing the second of a back-to-back without Pau Gasol and, more recently, the Nuggets - sans Carmelo Anthony - stunned the Lakers (and the entire NBA) with a 126-113 victory at Staples Center.

For the first time in ages, it seems as though the Nuggets relish playing the Lakers rather than run away from them.  And it hasn't gone unnoticed by the Lakers faithful.  Talking to several Lakers fan friends of mine here in Los Angeles this week, they collectively agree that the team to fear is the Nuggets because of that "no fear" factor.  Not the Mavericks, not the Jazz and certainly not the Spurs or the Thunder.  The Nuggets.  Just as they rightly feared those Kings squads from almost a decade ago.

And yet the national media is still assuming a Lakers NBA Finals appearance, hence why Melo feels as though the Nuggets are disrespected (and I think all of us in Nuggets Nation agree this is a good thing).  During the telecast of the Lakers/Mavericks game the other night, ESPN's Mark Jackson said that the Nuggets regular season victories over the Lakers will mean nothing if they are to meet again in the playoffs.  I disagree.  It may not mean much to the Lakers who continue to project (and perhaps have earned) an arrogance in assuming that a red carpet is laid out for them to make a third straight NBA Finals appearance.  But for the Nuggets, the more they can consistently perform strongly against the West's best team and continue to feel disrespected, the better.

Taking my point a step further, I actually think the Lakers have something to prove against the Nuggets for once, even if these are just regular season games.  Going down 0-3 in the season series to your primary conference rival is never a good thing, even Phil "Garbage Game" Jackson might agree with that.

On a side note, I imagine many of you - like me - will be doing a lot of "flipping" tomorrow between the Nuggets/Lakers game and the USA/Canada gold medal hockey game.  Maybe we'll be lucky enough to have the US shoot out to an early 6-0 lead against the Canadians like they did against the Finns?  That's about as likely as another Nuggets blowout victory over the Lakers.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS...

Lakers Stiffs

-Ron Artest: Of the many times I've been on the wrong side of an issue this season, at the top of the list has to be my offseason assertion that adding Artest would be a good thing for the Lakers.  Artest has been awful.  He's slow, can't jump, can't shoot, hasn't figured out the triangle offense and routinely gets smoked on the defensive end of the floor, his supposed specialty.

-Derek Fisher: Even though Fisher's performance has declined over a few seasons now, the Lakers could always count on Fisher to make a big shot here and there (as we saw during the last NBA Finals when Fisher made the signature shot of the series in Game 4).  No more.  Not only does Fisher miss shots early in games, but he misses them in the middle of games and late in games and can't play a lick of defense either.

-Sasha Vujacic: Vujacic has missed the last three games with a sprained right shoulder and will likely miss Sunday's game against the Nuggets, too.  But you can't have a Lakers Stiff List without including Vujacic, the league's biggest whiner/flopper.

Lakers Non-Stiffs

-Kobe Bryant: We might hate his guts in Colorado, but you have to respect his game.  Fighting through an assortment of injuries all season long, Kobe has - as ESPN's Ric Bucher recently noted - changed his game into an "old man at the Y type game" and yet he remains as dominant as ever.

-Pau Gasol: Gasol is probably the best big man in the Western Conference right now, but I finally discovered his Achilles' heel: late game free throw shooting.  While Gasol shoots a very respectable 81.3% from the free throw line, he has missed countless clutch free throws for several seasons now.  The Nuggets shouldn't be bashful about sending Gasol to the line in late game situations.

-Lamar Odom: Despite averaging a career low 10.3 ppg and me not being able to understand a word he says in that awful new Taco Bell commercial with Charles Barkley, when Odom steps up his game the Lakers are almost unbeatable, as we unfortunately witnessed in the 2009 WCF.

All I have to say is this is a must win, and SS&R has a good preview as well

Haha

This game is definitely NOT a must-win. Obviously every victory over the Lakers is sweet, and if we hope to get home-court in the western conference, beating the Lake Show will go a long ways towards that goal. However, the impact this game has on whether the Nuggets win or lose the NBA championship (or even their psyche towards the Lakers) is so incredibly marginal that it is asinine to call tomorrow a must-win game.

I’m not sure that Vujacic is a bigger flopper than Ginobili, but it might just be because I hate the Spurs more. Speaking of the Spurs…remember Pop sitting out his starters in a game that ultimately gave us the tiebreaker for last season? Here’s to hoping that Phil’s arrogance bites him in the ass as well come playoff time! Go Nuggets!

We need Kenyon

They’re going to come out swinging, I don’t buy for a second those national TV losses aren’t fresh in their minds. The simple fact is that if Malik Allen is in the starting lineup the game is over and we can all get pumped for some hockey. Melo will want to make a statement and his play since the Boston game suggest there will be little to no passing tomorrow. We must be physical on defense the whole game (give Joey minutes) and play disciplined half-court offense when the transition game is not going. It’s almost imperative for Nene to do something, I really will never understand how he allows himself to be such a scrub the past 2 games when we are injured and playing against soft big men. Kenyon and Joey are consistently bringing swagger and physical D to the team concept. Kenyon gets hurt the past 2 games and Nene hides in a corner. Our backcourt will hurt them, Chauncey could win it for us again but I really think Kenyon is the reason we have hit them so hard whenever we’ve played this year. Look if Malik starts this will not even be a game. PLAY JOEY

We need Kenyon on Gasol

Gasol is soft and can be shoved around. Nene just needs to stand up to Bynum for just a few possessions before Bynum starts getting in foul trouble.

Petro and Graham

So without Kenyon, do you think we can slide over Melo to the 4 and play Graham for a speedy lineup. Joey has been playing good and I don’t think Gasol can handle him or Melo, and our lack of defense on Gasol would essentially just take the ball out of the other Laker’s hands, which seems to bug them.

How about Petro? His 5-5 game in 22 minutes against Dallas had me thinking Grgurich had worked some magic on him. I like Malik Allen, but think he is more effective as a towel waver.

Phil Jackson better not lose this one because his team — RonRon, burritOdom, Princess Pau, and old man Fisher — seem to be cracking.

Of course we’ll probably win then get blown out by Phoenix in the back-to-back. The NBA was determined to stick it to the Nuggets with the scheduling.

by el Carg on Feb 27, 2010 10:51 PM MST reply actions

Without K-Mart

We can expect to see a lot of the three guard lineup. CB1, JR, Afflalo and Lawsome. I know everyone hate the three guard lineup but it may not be soo bad against the Lakers. Fisher can’t stay with Lawson, Shannon Brown gets “bored” when gaurding Chauncey and then Chauncey rains 3’s on him and Kobe often goes for steals leaving JR open for easy jumpers. But I somewhat expect that Afflalo will get into some type of foul trouble either early 1st with 2 or early 3rd with 4 or both as he’s the primary defender on Kobe.. If that’s the case I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Melo matched up on Kobe after the performance he gave against LaPout.

I only get to see the national broadcasts

so I tend to concede to the opinion of the “locals”. Granted almost all of the Nuggets national TV games have been against good teams this year, I was fortunate enough to watch the GS game the other night. So I got some insight about this lack of mental focus that the media paints of the Nuggets. While watching, I can’t remember specifics but the Dubs were on a run and cut the lead to single digits after a Tolliver or Morrow 3. That’s when I thought that maybe everyone knows what they’re talking about. But the next trip down Billups passed the ball into Nene in the post and Nene passed the ball back out to CB1, and I thought to myself that the Nuggets never make the extra pass and I expected that Melo would take the 3 from the top of the key as he was “open” but JR was in the corner waiting as the D rotated. Well to my disbelief Melo made the extra pass and JR sank the corner three.
Granted this example is just one possession in one game of many that the Nuggs have played. But through my Blue and Gold colored glasses it’s a glimpse of the mental focus that K-Mart said they needed to “lock in on” in order to close out the season. So hopefully we’ll see less of the ME-lo and JR self and more ball movement adding up to more team assists and more easy baskets.

Beat Those Lakers!

As a Cavs fan, I absolutely despise the Fakers and Kobe Cryant. In all honesty, I’m more afraid of playing the Nuggets in the Finals than the Fakers (Of course, if we do make it to the finals. I don’t want to be too presumptuous). You guys already beat us twice, and made us look bad in the process. Oh well, at least we put up a better fight against you than the Fakers!

I wish you the best of luck against the L.A. If, god forbid, the Cavs don’t win it all this year, I can at least take comfort in the fact that the Fakers and Kobe Cryant don’t win it.

Hope you guys win tomorrow!

melo needs to rebound

whether kmart plays or not. getting his teammates involved in the offense to start the game will be critical. look for the LAL to get off to a fast start and bury denver early. cb1 needs to take fischer inside on the offensive end. wishful thinking and jump shots will not get it done. kobe and the lakers cannot score when they are on defense. denver will win in a hard fought close game or the lakers will blow the nuggets out early.

Candyman

He’s a point forward at this point in his career, which I guess is his excuse for not being able to put the ball in the bucket. His assist average is OK, but that’s because he handles the ball at the top of the key a lot. Ever since he got hooked on weed he got his extension, he hasn’t done exactly as well as before.

Who scheduled this and the hockey match at the same time?

I’m going to have to DVR the basketball game. Which will help me speed through thos annoying commercials, I guess.

The Nuggets can win this if they:
• Take command of the boards
• Take smart shots with the basketball
• Get the Lakers bigs in foul trouble and disrupt Jackson’s rotation. To do this,
• Take the ball to the hole!

That said, to answer Andrew’s question, no, I don’t think Denver is going to beat the Lakers three straight times. But…. It sure would be nice.

But they suck even when Stern is bending the rules in their favor, so the L@kers are his second option.

“Dont get me wrong kobe is great but not when he play me”

Hmmm… So, do you suppose Kobe will go for 40 or 50 today? Or, the opposite, will Kobe turn into KoME to prove the tweet wrong, and he scores 34 pts on 13-35 shooting and the Nugs win?

whatever the media might say about the lakers getting to the finals easily or etc.

we at SSR still believe the road to the finals goes through denver…however i dont think the lakers are thinking they will automatically get to another finals, they know that the nuggets are a serious contender after that western conference finals series, if not for the steals by ariza, it could have been a much different outcome.

Anyone know for sure if Kenyon is scratched today?

Would really like to see him out there on the floor, but I think Denver might be saving him for the game vs. OKC if he’s not feeling 100%. I don’t necessarily disagree with that, but Kenyon has been very important in our wins over LA this year.

Wow, from the Denver Post

You can look at the Nuggets through different lenses … but the fact is this: When Denver’s four horsemen are all in the starting lineup (Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Kenyon Martin and Nene), the Nuggets are an astounding 27-6. That’s an .818 winning percentage.

If that was Denver’s overall winning percentage, that would be best in the NBA. Right now, Denver is 37-19 overall with a .661 winning percentage, which is fourth-best in the league, trailing Cleveland (43-14, .754), the Los Angeles Lakers (42-14, .750) and Orlando (38-19, .667).

Yes, injuries are part of the game, and the fact is, the Lakers have won at times without Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant.

But that 27-6 by Denver is pretty jaw-dropping.

We’re 39-19 at the moment … which is good enough for 3rd overall, just ahead of the Magic (39-20)

Anytime we score around 30 on O and hold the opposition below 25 I count that as a good quarter for us…especially against the lakers.

Now we just need to come out with the same intensity throughout the second quarter.

WHATEVER YOU DO

DO NOT START FORCEFEEDING CHAUNCEY.

I can see it happening already, they start keying in on Chauncey, both the Lakers and us…and he gets smothered and tries to throw up shots.

Spread it out between Chauncey and J.R. Both have to play EXTREMELY smart and get hot.

Losing Ty is bigger than it looks. It really made us slow down considerably… when he’s in the game, he made the Lakers defend us. Unless Billups shoots like he did in game #2, we’re going to struggle if we slow it down against the Lakers when their defense is set… it’s tough to beat.

Losing Ty took away two things from us: speed and ball movement. It seems when the ball stuck to Melo or Billups hands, there’s not enough ball movement. With Ty, he always pushes and moves the ball… players like AA with hot hand benefit from ball movement.

Losing Ty, Melo not playing focused (overdribbling and not moving the ball), Billups not hot and AC playing, are the right ingredients to lose a game.

by SnakefromHell on Feb 28, 2010 4:18 PM MST reply actions

I am not a Nuggets fan, but that was a terrible job of officiating.

I am a Clippers fan, and a NBA fan. The refs allowed Artest to play the most physical defense I have ever seen. Artest was all over Carmelo today. I watched every second of the game and Artest should have been fouled out by the end of the first half. Melo was only trying to get position on the elbow when he got his 6th foul. On the other hand, Kobe is allowed to push, elbow and pull his defenders and they seem to get the fouls. It just doesn’t make any sense. The refs were very inconsistent on the way they called this game.

In a game like that, the Nuggets should have shot 40+ free throws

Melo only shot 8 free throws. It seemed to em that eh was fouled almost every time he touched the ball. How Artest managed to only get called for 3 fouls is beyond me!

jr smith

single handedly lost the game for you guys. every time the nuggets were in a critical juncture, for whatever reason he got the ball and just chucked. i haven’t seen such chuckery since…oh wait, the Bulls just got a taste of this last night from our own chucker, janerro pargo.

hopefully karl goes off on JR after this game and tells him to play within the flow of the offense next time. his box score shows 3-12, but it was worse than just 3-12 because of the timing of his poor shots (at which point in the game he took them).

i haven’t gotten a chance to watch too much nugs this year, so i’m not sure if he is your designated spot up shooter. but it sure didn’t seem like the offense was designed for mr. smith to be the one taking the big shots at critical points. billups should have continued what he was doing (instead of passing it off to smith).

Every player has a bad night once in a while

Heck, Kobe was 3-17, lmao. Kobe has also missed more than 20 shots in two games this year. That is bad shooting!

HVYDRT007-"EJ's value is diminishing Game By Game"

by NBAFAN8 on Feb 28, 2010 4:24 PM MST up reply actions

yeah but

it was the timing that really stunned me about jr’s shots. like at points where the nuggets were losing their lead or lost it completely and needed to attack or draw a foul or get something going, their only offense consisted of JR just jacking up 3s. really?

"4 inches, baby!" --ripped off from Kush

by anorexorcist on Feb 28, 2010 4:26 PM MST up reply actions

You have to keep shooting if you are J.R.

He is a volume shooter. He can score 40 points on one night, and then go 3-12 like he did today. He is very important for this team. The Nuggets as a team just didn’t shoot the ball well, but that had a lot to do with the very physical play by the Lakers.

by NBAFAN8 on Feb 28, 2010 4:23 PM MST up reply actions

Btw, I didn't really notice

Until now…but is it just me, or does it seem like Ty gets injured quite a bit? I don’t want to say injury prone, but for a guy that’s as young as he is…

I know he plays extremely physical and when he’s charging around the way he is, he’s bound to get hurt, but if you look at some of the other guys of his size and play style, I get the feeling he shouldn’t be getting hurt this much.

Thank god it’s only minor injuries so far though.

by Agaliarept on Feb 28, 2010 4:21 PM MST reply actions

We'll need Lawson tomorrow hope he can go

Melo was constantly trying to take over in the second half, Nuggets stopped working the ball inside and CB/JR didn’t make shots. Chauncey was trying to get the ball to the bigs and turning it over but Melo was giving it up on his own. If we played a little bit smarter in the second half we got it. Melo has to own up for this one, GK went with him most all of the second half and he lost his head.

This was just one game today. Artest was allowed to play very physical and it through Melo off his game. Now I will say this. If the refs alow Artest to play like this during the playoffs, every team is going to have problems. This is basketball, not rugby!

by runningdonut on Feb 28, 2010 4:44 PM MST reply actions

okay we lost a game.. everyone take a deep breath, now release......

What did you all expect to win every game remaining? Loses happen. Yes this was ugly, but i think everyone shares a part. melos turnovers were inexcuseable, but so were the rest of the teams too. And Everyone shot badly, no one escapes there. Nene didnt get enough touches in the second half, but how much is that design, and how much is that sometimes Nene goes into the locker room at halftime and never comes out. melo had a bad game, but even superstars do, thats when the other team mates have to step up. And no one really did for denver. So we lost, we learn from it, we grow from it, and we get ready for phoenix tommorrow. There is still alot of regular season left to play, and we will see the lakers in the playoffs, and we might lose a game or 2 there too, unless you honestly think we will sweep them. Lets go nuggs, shake it off.

2 other things. I love AAA. What a great defender, and a good scorer too. Plays hard and straight up with intensity, gotta love it.

Yes artest is a good defender, thats why the lakers got him. But if you think this game was fairly officiated, or even well officiated, your drinking the same koolaid the refs get from David Stern. i wont say anything more on the refs beyond that, otherwise i might get worked up and have to go break stuff.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
