A high scoring boat race... (Nuggets/Warriors recap)
In my game preview, I predicted that the Nuggets would run amok with the Warriors for 48 minutes and score in the 130-point range. I was off by three.
Give the Warriors credit, they got the Nuggets to do exactly what they wanted: play an up-tempo, sporadic, shoot-first basketball game. Unfortunately for the boys from the Bay Area, the Nuggets are a hell of a lot better at playing Warriors basketball than the Warriors are and thus won handily 127-112.
What could have been an exciting game turned into a boat race as the Nuggets took an early first-half lead and barely broke a sweat for the remainder of the night. After the Nuggets blew the game open in the first half, the closest the Warriors got was 106-100 with 8:38 remaining in the game, at which point Nuggets interim head coach Adrian Dantley remembered that he has Carmelo Anthony on his team, inserted Melo into the lineup and the Nuggets really never looked back.
Of course, it helps when Chauncey Billups can't miss a shot. Continuing his best-season-ever as a professional basketball player, the all-business Billups erupted for 37 points, just two shy of his career high that he posted on the Lakers earlier this month. And it was an eruption indeed as Billups missed just six of his 19 field goal attempts, including a stellar six-of-eight shooting night from behind the three-point arc.
As is typical when you play the Warriors and the possession count goes ways up, many Nuggets were big time contributors tonight. In fact, the box score reads like the Nuggets got into the Hot Tub Time Machine (and yes, I can't wait to see that movie) and they ended up playing the Warriors in the 1980s: in addition to Billups' 37 points, Melo had 27, J.R. Smith had 25 points, eight (not a typo) rebounds and four steals, and Nene and Chris "Birdman" Andersen yanked down 21 combined rebounds. And on the other side of the ledger, three Warriors had at least 20 points, including Stephen Curry's exceptional 30 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds and two steals outing.
But even though the box score looks somewhat glamorous, I found this game to be a bore. When the highlight of the game is Warriors head coach Don Nelson telling TNT's Craig Sager: "It's not that I don't play rookies. I just don't like to play bad rookies" in reference to Curry getting ample PT this season, you know the game is a snoozer.
Congratulations to Dantley for improving his interim coaching record to 2-1. If he keeps this up, he just might find a spot for himself in The Denver Nuggets Interim Head Coach Hall of Fame alongside the likes of Scott Brooks, Mike Evans, Michael Cooper, Dick Motta and Gene Littles.
Non-Stiff of the Game
-Chauncey Billups: For all the reasons mentioned above. Billups set the tone immediately after tipoff against the young, undersized Warriors guards. Dantley curiously mentioned to Sager during his first quarter interview that Nuggets head coach George Karl doesn't like the bigger Billups to post up small guards, but that Dantley was going to do it anyway (and it worked!). Additionally, is it fair to suggest that Billups should be a top four MVP candidate this season behind only LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard?
Stiff(s) of the Game
-Andris Biedrins and Devean George: Watching this game, I kicked myself all night for not having Biedrins and his 13% (also not a typo) free throw shooting percentage on my pre-game Warriors Stiff List. Biedrins has become such an awful free throw shooter that he shoots field goals too quickly hoping not to get fouled and sent to the line. And George with his 1-for-6 shooting and five fouls played like...well...Devean George.

Great game.
Fun game to watch,,The only sour note was the injury to K-mart..any word on what it is nd how serous it is?
i was at the game
and there were a couple of observations…
— at the very beginning of the game, after tip off and while the ball was in play, the nuggets bench players were all standing and huddled in the corner seemingly in prayer…for coach perhaps? that was inspiring to see.
—during pre-game warmups, AC was practicing a behind the rim arc shot…he arced the ball so high that it landed on top of the clock above the rim and stayed up there. he felt stupid.
—kmart had to be helped off the court. looked like he hurt his knee…i hope it wasn’t anything serious
—stephen curry is REALLY good
fun game, glad we got the easy win.
the AC thing was funny!
anyways we’re 1 win better than last year lets win some more for coach!
correction
GS got within 2 in the 3rd, and missed an open 3 for the lead

this game reminds me of the advice i got during the last visit to my doctor
TURN YOUR HEAD AND COUGH! the best way to sum up the game is to look at the scoring by quarters. nuggets allowed gsw 35 points in the 2nd and 31 points in the 3rd quarters. the only thing missing was a red, white and blue basketball.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
super ugly
but still a win… keep it up nuggs, ugly or not
5280 or fight!!!!!

We need Z more then ever
K-Mart and Bird can’t get healthy! Bird was limping bad, but he couldn’t leave because K-Mart was already out. This sucks!!
Nuggets are now 2-0 in games in which I'm sick
Or maybe it’s 3-0. I didn’t feel like watching this game because my head was hurting pretty bad so I went to sleep at 8. Always nice to wake up and see that the Nuggs have won

that's the feeling I get almost every time
I dont stay up till 3 am to watch a Nuggets game (live in spain), and yes, it is a good feeling, but I prefer going to bed with the W

Nice Write up!
Hot Tub Time Machine! haha, I would watch it…but I’m not hyped up to see it.
Stephen Curry was amazing! Love that kid.
Billups? Top 4 MVP candidate? I agree!
Biedrins. My goodness gracious everything freethrow related to him is horrendous. LOL@the line about him shooting field goals quicker to avoid being fouled…hahaha
JR Smith
He took about 3 or 4 bad shots in a quick period and I was like “What the hell JR?!”
THEN he stroked that 3, stole the inbounds pass and stroked another 3! Beautiful.
Post all star break JR rocks every year..
I want all those who suggested trading JR to post the following…Ï was wrong..Im terribly sorry!! I wont do it again..¨ Thank you…

Did anyone see TNT's comparison of Biedrins'...
FT attempt to Barkley’s golf shot. Hilarious. Usually the TNT ‘humor’ is beyond lame, but that was funny.
Our bigs are getting f*cked up
Sure hope they can play Sunday, let alone today.
I’m surprised Nene is healthy.
Butt-ugly kind of win
I was up until 3 a.m. watching the game DVR’d from the TNT feed. A couple of observations: Adrian Dantley seemed like he stuck with coach Karl’s rotations.
The Nuggets letting the bad team back in the game should not have surprised anyone who follows this team. But even when it was just a two-point lead, I felt confident that Denver was going to win. Keep in mind, it could have been my buddy sending me a text at 10:45 saying “Fuck ya! Go Nuggets!”, so I was sort of clued in.
The turning point was JR hitting those two quick threes. Moments before the Warriors cut it to two points, then JR turns it into a 10-point game. Good job, JR.
Melo shot the ball pretty good. He kept it simple on his drives to the basket, meaning he got some layups to go in even when he didn’t get the whistle. But Billups was amazing yet again.
Instead of fast forwarding through halftime, I listened to Kenny Smith and Sir Charles talk about the Nuggets and how despite being so good against good teams, the Nuggets’ lack of focus against scrubs is the reason why they and others who cover the NBA have a hard time taking the Nuggets seriously. I agree with that. I didn’t agree when they suggested that Denver would have a difficult time getting past Oklahoma, Phoenix or Portland in the first round.
I don’t think Kenyon’s knee injury is serious, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it stiffens up overnight and he sits out against the Pistons tonight. Hope he is healthy for Sunday.
Last thing: Ty Lawson seems to be turning the ball over too much when he is pressured with a double team. The rest of the team needs to recognize these circumstances and help they rookie point guard out by going toward the ball when this happens.

halftime
I also watched most of the half-time. I liked their ideas about running practices differently to give the team a sense of urgency around the lower tier teams. I really liked their suggestion about yanking players in game when they aren’t playing the right way. I would love to see Karl (I don’t think Dantley can do it) call a timeout during a rough stretch and say: Okay, next guy who heaves up a terrible forced contested three is on the bench, I want everybody driving the lane, and then follow through by actually yanking people. He occasionally will take out J.R. but other than that, everyone always gets there minutes regardless of how they are playing.

This just in
S. Curry is very good.
C. Billups is better…for now.
If they could ever team Curry with a legit big and A. Randolph, the Warriors would be very tough….assuming, of course, no D. Nelson.
The move Curry put on Bird was sick.
A Snoozer? Yes.
And while I don’t want to be Mr. Negative – allowing 16 offensive rebounds to one of the weakest, most undersized front courts in the NBA is unacceptable. I don’t care if it’s Cleveland, Washington, LA or Minnesota…..Box Out!
Was it just me?
I only watched a little of the game — when my daughter was up the votes were tied at 1-1-1 for figure skating, basketball, and “something with bad guys and fighting” (my daughter is AWESOME), and it was 1-1 for figure skating and basketball when she went to bed. My wife won both ballots on the cumulative age tiebreaker.
But from what I did see, Chauncey was being very, very aggressive offensively — sort of like he had decided that he had enough of losing to scrub teams, and he wasn’t going to let that happen any more.

I liked Billups' effort as well.
I also liked the Nuggets bombing away and making a season high 16 three-pointers. I never think a game is a snoozer when my team is on fire, but the thrill of a close game wasn’t there at the end. Although Morrow’s three-point attempt to give the Warriors the lead was the turning point in the game.
He makes that shot I don’t know what happens … he missed and Melo hit a jumper and shortly after J.R. Smith hit that three … stole the inbounds pass around mid-court and buried another three! That was awesome! And that was the BALLGAME!
